 Milford Central Academ November 2011  Delaware Communities In Schools Family Dinner was a Great Success  It has been said that the best  place for a family to communicate is around the dinner table. Our family extended to almost 60  people at our first CIS family dinner on October 25 th ! With several parents, siblings and CIS students in attendance, we discussed o ur program at Milford Central Academy and many of the initiatives and goals we will achieve throughout the 2011-2012 school year. Families walked away wit h some great informat ion as well as prizes, including Wal-Mart and Grottos Pizza gift certificates. Parents, we greatly appreciate your support as we endeavor to fulfill the five CIS Basics. This valuable family time was a great step in the right direction! Special thanks to Jen Koest er from the CIS Delaware State office for her help in planning and facilitating the family dinner! We believe that every child needs and deserves the Five Basics : 1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult 2. A safe place to learn and grow 3. A health start and healthy future 4.  JDG brings Dr. Patricia Goslee to

Address JDG and CIS Students

Dr. Patricia Goslee, Coordinator of Professional Development & School

Programs at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, addressed Commun

Schools and Jobs for Delaware Graduates (JDG) students. JDG Coordinator

Harmon invited Dr. Goslee to speak to our combined group of over 80 studen

Goslee encouraged students to achieve their fullest potential and reminded the

CIS is looking for Volunteers

 YOU can make a difference!

YOU specifically have something valuable to contribute to a CIS student at M

Central Academy! Paying it forward only takes a little bit of your time, but y

long-lasting and positive results. Our current needs include the following

opportunities:

• Lunch Buddies- Eat lunch once a week with a student. Sharing goodconversation with friends over a meal is something we all love. Lunch

in 30 minute segments. Which lunch schedule works best for you?

Lunch A- 10:45-11:15; Lunch B- 11:30-12:00; Lunch C- 12:15-12:45

• Homework Helper- Many students just need that one-on-one attentio

their “ah-ha moment.” Students could benefit from your help with

completing homework and/or class assignments, gaining confidence in

reading or math, and basic tutoring. Students can work with you one-

or in small groups. Homework helpers are primarily needed on Friday

9:00-9:30am (girl’s class) and 12:45-1:15pm (boy’s class). Other tim be discussed on an individual bases.

• Career Speakers- Come tell us your professional and personal journe

Many times success seems like a distant dream instead of an attainable

reality. Sharing your journey helps put things into perspective for our
