Reduce Stress with YogaThe word yoga means to join, or

    unite. Methods include ocusing on

    respiration, physical movement, and

    consciousness.

The iRest military program, based on

the ancient practice o Yoga Nidra,

    is designed to systematically reduce

    physical, emotional, mental, and even

subconscious tension. It can be helpul

in the treatment o PTSD. Participants

    are taught to manage disturbing

moods and memories throughconscious choices rather than allow-

    ing unconscious reactions to answer

them. The simple techniques can also

be used in other aspects o daily lie,

letting the student o yoga eel more

    mentally and emotionally balanced

    when encountering dicult situations.

iRest may be particularly wellsuited or

service members and amilies because it:

    N Is a nonpharmaceutical, adjunctive

    program that complements any

current treatments they are using or

    healing.

N Develops mental ocus on the present

    moment which helps people avoid

revisiting traumatic lie events or wor-

    rying about possible uture ones.

N Emphasizes the practice oawareness o and acceptance o im-

mediate as well as past experiences,

and acceptance o lie as it is without

    excessive tension.

    N Quickly establishes a eeling o

success in learning a means o

    selregulation.

    N Is a seladministered program

ater just a ew hours o inperson

    instruction.

Research has shown that iRest Yoga

    Nidra eectively reduces these symp

    toms o PTSD:

Strengthening FamiliesCreating a New NormalNavy amilies selfessly make sacrices and endure

challenges as they serve alongside the service

member. An important indicator o overall orcereadiness is the well-being o its amilies. The New

Parent Support Home Visitation Program (NPSHVP)

provides supportive and caring services to Navy

amilies with new babies through the age o three

    using various intervention strategies.

In 2012, NPSHVP will integrate the Strengthening Families

ramework o the Center or the Study o Social Policy into its overall Healthy

Family Awareness Campaign. Five protective actors are the oundation o this ap-

proach. Research has shown that together, these actors buer risk, build on amily

strengths, and establish an environment that promotes optimal child and youth

    development.

Below are examples o how the ve protective actors can impact a amily:

N Parent Resiliency. Parents who are emotionally and psychologically healthy are

able to resolve conficts and handle unexpected lie challenges

N Social Connections. Parents who have supportive and trusting adult relation-

ships are able to receive spontaneous emotional support and advice that could

    improve their quality o lie

N Concrete Support in Times of Need. When amilies are in crisis, having their

needs met with accessible and tangible resources alleviates anxiety and stress.Research points to anxiety and stress to the leading precipitators o domestic

    violence incidents

N Knowledge of Early Child Development. Parents who have basic child

development education are more likely to set age appropriate expectations and

milestones or their child. Unrealistic expectations oten precipitate child abuse

    and neglect incidents.

N Social and Emotional Competency. Children who communicate their eelings

in an age-appropriate manner seemingly motivate parents to respond appropri-

ately to their needs, building healthy parent and child attachment.
