REFLECTION FROM THE GRAND PRESIDENT

Grand President Amy Valdez (Beta Iota)[email protected]

November brings to mind two special occasions, Founder’s Day

and the Thanksgiving holiday. On Founder’s Day, I like to read the passage from the history book describing that Friday evening in November 1883.

On Friday evening, November 2, 1883, a group of pharmacy students assembled at No. 73 State Street. Most of these students probably walked. Any commuters among these students would have ridden a horse, rather than a carriage. The meeting was probably held after an evening meal.

Darkness was settling over Ann Arbor on this late fall or early winter evening. Had snow flurries appeared yet? The men had settled into the routine of the new academic year and were beginning to explore how to maximize their professional growth. They chose to begin their weekend by forming a new association.

~ Phi Delta Chi: A Tradition of Leaders in Pharmacy

I am grateful that those students gathered at that time and became the first Brothers of our Fraternity. I would encourage each of my Brothers to reflect on those Brothers who came before us and how they have shaped history both within our fraternity and in the

profession of pharmacy.

Enjoy this Thanksgiving holiday, spending time with family and friends. Travel safely to your destinations and return safely home. I am thankful for having all of you as Brothers in our grand fraternity! The dedication of our Brothers is like none other, serving Phi Delta Chi, your schools, and your communities. Your Grand and Regional Officers have just returned from the Strategic Planning Retreat in Memphis, TN. We have worked hard to forge a plan for the upcoming 2 years. Stay tuned to the December e-communicator where the top 5 goals will be announced. Being at St. Jude and seeing all of the selflessness that is inherent there makes one truly thankful for each day. May you each live our motto, Alterum Alterius Auxilio Eget.

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” ~ John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Psi Wins Intramural Volleyball Championship

Congrats to the Psi Chapter for winning another championship (in addition to the Thurston Cup)! The Drake University newspaper, The Times-Delphic, recently ran the following statement about Psi Chapter:

Women’s Recreational League: Phi Delta Chi – Here’s another squad that never felt the loss of a match or even a single game. Whether the team was overqualified or simply came prepared every night, the intramurals program will forever remain non-judgmental. The professional fraternity continually seems to place great athletes in intramurals, and every league should be grateful for the challenge.Adapted from http://timesdelphic.com/2011/10/27/intramural-volleyball-champs-get-recognition

Alpha Tau Recognized for Campus Clean Up Effort

Alpha Tau Chapter was recently highlighted in The Daily Cougar, the newspaper of the University of Houston, for their campus clean up efforts. The article includes a great photograph of several Brothers in clean up action... you can check out here: http://thedailycougar.com/2011/11/01/pharmacy-fraternity-cleans-up-campus-litter/

The Maine Pharmacy Association held its 2011 Fall Convention in Bangor, Maine on September 10th and

11th, 2011. Two tracks of programming were offered – a clinical and state/national legislative review and a leadership development track. On the first day, the two tracks ran concurrently and then collapsed into the leadership track only on the second morning. The Pharmacy Leadership and

Education Institute provided 9 hours of continuing education designed to cultivate both seasoned and

emerging leaders of the MPA. Brother Bruce Jarvi, student pharmacist at Husson University, facilitated the match between the needs of the Maine Pharmacists Association and the leader development program offerings of PLEI.

Finding the Balance: Leadership Skills for the Aspiring and Seasoned Pharmacy Professional was a good programming fit the MPA meeting. The organization is experiencing a renewal in terms of membership and positivity energy largely influenced by the two new schools of pharmacy in the state. The MPA requested topics such as conflict management, leadership transition, developing leaders, maintaining membership and building an organization. These concepts were shaped into a program that encouraged thoughtful exploration of personal behavior and its effect on an organization or group and the evolution of a group as the individuals in the group grow and evolve.

Brothers Gary Keil and Nancy Alvarez, PLEI Board Members and Program Directors has the pleasure of working with an amalgam of people – student pharmacists, faculty members and deans of the two colleges of pharmacy and pharmacists in the community. True to form, they tinkered with the program as it unfolded so as to connect with each and every person in attendance.

Anecdotal feedback indicates that the program was successful in meeting its objectives. One person indicated that the program offered a different way to look at old topics. Another person was struck by the fact that he had not thought about the importance of understanding priorities as a means to manage them effectively. A third person felt it was the best experience because the energy of the participants was palpable. He indicated that “finally, someone got into my head and could see what I was really feeling”.

The trip back to the Philadelphia area was met with travel challenges for the facilitator pair but nothing could alter the personal satisfaction and joy derived from a weekend of fellowship with a terrific group of pharmacy folks.

Next up…PLEI travels to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy for a day program…stay tuned!

Delta SkyBonus Program

As part of my efforts to save Phi Delta Chi money I am always on the lookout for ways to partner with vendors. One of the newer companies we have joined forces with is Delta Airlines. Every

time you book travel, whether personal, business or fraternity related, Phi Delta Chi can earn reward travel points. When booking your next trip, simply enter our SKYBonus ID, US0000255, when making your reservation. Using

this code does NOT affect your rewards travel. If you have any questions, please give me a call.

Newly Elected Regional Correspondents

I am please to introduce to you the 2011-2012 Regional Correspondents!

The Regional Correspondents (RC) fill a vital role in the ongoing operation of the Fraternity. Their main role is to serve as the link between our local chapters, and our national office. Each month they communicate with the Worthy Correspondents in their respective regions in regards to the Achievement Award Program (AAP) as well as other Fraternity related issues. They are also heavily involved in planning our upcoming Regional Meetings so I highly encourage every Chapter to utilize their RC for any issues surrounding their respective Regional Meeting. You may also find your RC traveling around within their region to participate in Chapter and ChEQ visits throughout the fall, winter, and spring.

If you or your Chapter have any questions, suggestions, or concerns about anything Fraternity related please contact your RC! This years group of RC’s is a highly motivated, highly capable group and I encourage you to utilize their skills!
