It goes without saying thatBarnsley Hospital’s biggest asset isits staff. But once in a while, it’sgood to remind ourselves just howvaluable every single member ofstaff is in the day-to-day runningof our hospital and the delivery ofconsistent, high quality patientcare.

Our annual HEART Awards do justthis and now in their third year, they area great celebration and recognition ofthe dedication and achievements ofboth our hard-working staff and, notforgetting, our volunteers.

This year’s winners are featured onpage 4 of this magazine and I urge youto take a look and see for yourself justhow wonderful our staff are in making a

difference to the care and treatment ofBarnsley patients. Ward 19 (care of theelderly) deserves special mention, scooping as it did three awards, butevery winner can be rightly proud – andtake a bow!

While the HEART Awards very muchput our staff centre stage, contrast thisto an army of behind-the-scenes staffwho are absolutely vital to thefunctioning of Barnsley Hospital, equally contributing to the delivery ofgreat customer service and patient care.

A raft of services, including portering, waste management and the linen roomare all part of our ‘estates and facilities’function which keeps the hospitalliterally ticking round-the-clock. Someof our behind-the-scenes staff arefeatured on page 8, giving you a real

insight into their roles and theircommitment to getting it right forpatients. They too are to becongratulated.

And staying with congratulations, well done to Louise Jones who won ourcompetition to find the ‘voice’ ofBarnsley Hospital – see page 7. Thecompetition proved a hit with theBarnsley community with no less than200 people voting for Louise, and whatan inspiration she is to us all.

So summer has arrived (if not theweather) and they say it’s a time forcelebration. And here at BarnsleyHospital, we’ve a lot to commemorate, not least our staff and volunteers whocontinue to shine for patients.

Darren Nunn started his career atBarnsley Hospital as a porter on ayouth training scheme, aged 16.Now 43, Darren is one of fourportering team leaders dedicatedto delivering a top quality servicefor Barnsley’s patients.

“Our work in portering is very muchbehind the scenes but we, like everyoneelse in the hospital, have a key role inproviding patient care,” says Darren.

“We’re constantly monitoring andmeasuring what we do to improve thequality of our service to patients. Theyare at the centre of everything we do.”

After ‘getting his foot in the door’ atBarnsley, Darren moved from porteringto transport, and then to the kitchensand X-ray before switching back toportering.

“I gained a good awareness of whatthe hospital was all about,” he says. “I’vepushed myself forward and got threeaccredited ILM certificated team leaderand first line management qualificationsand I’m very excited about being part ofthe ‘Together We Can Make It Better’scheme here at Barnsley.

“As staff, we’re very welcoming andaccommodating and that’s what makesit better for patients. I love being part ofthe team at Barnsley.”

Darren is one of a 90-strong armyworking in ‘Estates and Facilities’ atBarnsley Hospital – a department that isvital to the day-to-day functioning of thehospital.

Paul Bedford, 55, is portering managerand waste co-ordinator. He manages 28full time and six bank porters who‘move’ at least 120 patients a day ontrolleys and wheelchairs and in beds.

“We spend a lot of time making surethe portering service stays relevant totoday’s NHS,” explains Paul, who joinedBarnsley in 1989 as a porter. “So we’re allabout customer service and how best wecan meet the needs of our patients.”

Recent measures introduced to make

the portering service as efficient aspossible include a portering helpdeskand the use of mobile phones. Says Paul,“The traditional bleep system can befrustrating and slow things down. Themobile phone system means we canrespond much more quickly forpatients.”

You can imagine the amount of wasteproduced by a hospital and Paul’sdepartment has made great strides inBarnsley’s waste management, includingrecycling. His team collects 1.8 tons ofwaste a day from around the hospitalsite, and recycles 7 tons a week. “We’vereduced the amount we send to landfillby 50 per cent,” says Paul.

Electric ‘tugs’ are used to ferry thewaste to the hospital’s basement whereit is sorted. Paper andcardboard are sentfor recycling atlocal companies,“It’s income-generatingand we reduceour carbon

footprint at the same time,” says Paul. There’s also a green room for used

furniture which is recycled for use inother parts of the hospital, andwheelchairs are collected and cleanedby the portering team ready for the startof each day.

And there’s more. The porteringdepartment delivers 7,000 medical gascylinders a year to the hospital wards, and moves a staggering 66,000 items oflinen (dirty and clean) across the site – aweek!

Paul adds, “We’re always looking atour service through the users’ eyes andseeing where we can makeimprovements. We never rest on ourlaurels.”

Linen team deliverwithout failIn Barnsley’s linen room – it’s actually aseparate building on the hospital site – a hugetask is undertaken every day by a dedicatedteam of five part-time women.

They include Karen Wilson who joinedBarnsley in 1990 and worked in cleaningbefore taking up a post in the linen room threeyears ago.

Karen, 51, explains the team’s role, “Our jobis to make sure every ward and departmenthas the linen requirements they need each day– that’s 29 wards including areas like A&E, ITU,labour suite and day surgery as well as all theoutpatient clinics.”

The linen is everything you can think of, andmore: sheets, pillowcases, blankets, towels, duets, nightwear and patient gowns. Karenand her colleagues distribute up to 30,000clean linen items a week and a further 1,800-2,500 theatre/day surgery scrub suits.

As well as the ‘traditional’ bed linen there arealso bed curtains and specific linen itemsneeded by wards and departments, such asbreast-screening capes, X-ray gowns, duvetcovers and many more, adding an averagefurther 2,000 pieces for the team to sort andissue.

Karen and her colleagues work Monday toFriday to deliver a seven-day service, incorporating weekends and bank holidays. Toensure these needs are met the team record

and monitor all linen issues and usage, thereby ensuring that sufficient supplies of

linen are available to all ‘customers’ at alltimes. The majority of the clean linen isissued on a transfer trolley on anexchange basis: a full trolley is taken tothe area and exchanged for the part-used trolley which is returned to thelinen room ready to be re-filled thefollowing day.

“Our linen is washed in Sheffieldand comes back to us every morning– the heaviest items are on stillagesand the residue is bagged in linen skipbags, such as nightwear, gowns andpillowcases is bagged in linen skip

bags,” says Karen. “The items in the skip bagsare sorted and put onto the shelves. We collectwhat we need from each stillage or shelf foreach ward/department and then transfer thelinen to the trolleys ready for the porters todeliver to the relevant areas. However, there area few areas whose linen is still distributed vialinen skip bags which we then have to go outto unpack into the linen store rooms.”

The hospital’s bed curtains and specific linenitems are not laundered by Sheffield butwashed by the Keresforth Centre, and are alsoreceived on a daily basis. These items aresorted, counted and distributed to wards anddepartments as required.

Karen adds, “We’re a busy, hard-workingsmall team and what we do every day – thesorting, liaising with the wards and ourcolleagues – ensures that our role meets thecomfort and needs of our clients.”

Transforming Urgent CareTwo major schemes are underwayto improve unscheduled (urgent)care in the hospital which will seechanges in the emergencydepartment and acute medicalunit (AMU).

The purpose of the transformationis to ensure that the ever increasingnumber of patients coming throughthe emergency department receivethe best care for their needs and amore rapid assessment and treatment– not just in the emergencydepartment, but throughout thehospital.

Health professionals from thehospital across different specialtieshave worked together to agree thisnew way of working which will resultin a new 10 bed observation area inthe emergency department and asignificant expansion of the AMUfrom 22 beds to 45 beds.

Please bear with usIn order to complete all the

improvements to urgent care anumber of ward changes will have totake place to allow building work tostart – these will not impact onpatients but please bear with us if you

visit the hospital and find things havemoved around slightly.

The building works are due to startin September and will take severalmonths. We will be working extremelyhard to minimise the disruption topatients during this time andapologise in advance for anyinconvenience caused by buildingworks around the emergencydepartment and the third floor of ourmedical block (located near car parkA).

Look out for regular transformationupdates on signage around thehospital and on our website.

newsIN BRIEF

This year, the hospital is looking attransforming how it works – not just tomake savings but to meet the needs ofour patients against ever increasingdemand. We can only do this by totallytransforming how we work. As part ofthis programme, we asked our cleaningcontractors, Initial, to do the same. Inparticular, we asked how they might usetechnology and different ways ofworking to improve the service.

They responded with a comprehensiveplan which proposed different shiftpatterns, a new structure, new electricalequipment and cleaning technology. Thisincludes the use of ‘nano coating’ – a new

surface coating which repels bacteriaand reduces the need for steam cleaning.

Maintaining the cleanliness of thehospital is of monumental importance –Initial has assured us that their plans willhelp them to make savings whilecontinuing to provide the samestandards of quality, which means thatwe can continue to have such lowinfection rates and high independentlyassessed scores for our patientenvironment.

We will continue to stringentlymonitor the standards throughout thetransformation to ensure they remain ashigh as they currently are.

NHS Changes -The Health andSocial Care ActOn March 27 2012 after alistening exercise and somerevisions the Health and SocialCare Bill became law. The Healthand Social Care Act 2012 willpave the way for reorganizationto the way the NHS currentlyworks.

At the heart of the plans forrestructuring the health serviceis giving patients more choice, clinicians more control andorganisations greater freedomfrom central control and politicalinterference.

The government plans toachieve this by establishing apowerful sector regulator (thenew Monitor), hand to GPscontrol of much of the NHS’s£80 billion annual budget, abolish PCTS and SHAs and handover responsibility toindependent bodies including anewly constituted NHSCommissioning Board and PublicHealth England.
