On the Cover:Who knows what great gift our cover model is opening? Here’s hoping your kids have the same reaction this holiday season.

My 8-year-old daughter came home singing a Katy Perry song a few weeks ago. Where in the world had she heard that song? I asked, shocked. At school, of course, since there’s no way she was hearing that at home. (I fully admit to being a music snob—alternative rock only, for me, with rare exceptions that don’t include female pop stars.)

It’s the hint and preview of what’s to come: someday frighteningly soon, I will lose the fairly large amount of control I have over my kids’ lives. All the dreams I’ve been collecting for them, and it turns out they’ve been assembling their own all along, with the influence of others who don’t necessarily share our family’s values or habits.

I explained clearly to Madison that Katy Perry is not an acceptable role model, but it’s a fact she may someday reject, and she will ultimately have to make her own choices regarding music (at least when I’m not around) and everything else in life. Right now my husband’s and my job is to guide and discipline, while also preparing to accept whoever she chooses to become. Even if it’s a female pop star.

Share the shocking (non-profane) songs or phrases your kids have brought home from school on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/VancouverFamily.

DEAR DANA

D E A R D A N A

Dear Dana:It’s nearly Thanksgiving time again, and I’m not looking forward to “Uncle Bob’s” over-boozing at the family feast we host. Our kids are now reaching an age that they notice something’s amiss as “Uncle Bob” gets louder, and his speech slurs. My husband says to just ignore it, as we don’t have his brother over that often, and it’s not that big a deal. I don’t agree, but am just not sure what do to this year about . . . -- The Over Cooked Goose

Dear TOCG:Al-Anon offers a “How do you know if you are affected by someone’s drinking?“ quiz. Your letter checked off several “affected by the excessive drinking of someone close” indicators from the www.al-anon.alateen.org quiz. Another gauge is the “Is it alcoholism? 7 symptoms of addiction” (see sidebar).

Given that, you probably can’t change “Uncle Bob’s” relationship with alcohol, but you can set some healthy household boundaries about acceptable behavior and how you choose to handle unacceptable behavior. Ideally, nip this in the bud with a caring conversation ahead of the holiday.

Battle Ground-based Anchor Point Drug & Alcohol counselor, Andrew Lindsell, advises, “Be assertive, and speak your

truth. Address the behavior and not the person.”

Your caring conversation might go something like this…

Hello Bob, We’re looking forward to spending time you again for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s been a while.

Is it okay for us to talk about something upsetting that came up last Thanksgiving? We’re concerned about your drinking. It affects our relationship. As the wine flowed, you got louder and at the same time, harder to understand. We care about you, and didn’t know what to say, so no one said anything about it. We were also concerned about your ability to drive home safely. It’s not the first time that’s happened. Our children could tell something wasn’t quite right, too.

We definitely want you to come, Bob. We thought you might want to know that we’re having a dry Thanksgiving, to prevent that awkward situation from last year from happening again. No, we don’t mean that we can count on no rain here in the Northwest, what we do mean is we’re not drinking any alcohol at this year’s Thanksgiving.

Are you okay with that?

We believe it’s that much more important as the kids get older to show them how we can all fully enjoy each other’s company. We love you, and hope you can join us.

If you’d rather not nix alcohol altogether, set what limits you can all get on board with, such as “We’re having only one or two drinks over the whole course of the day, and that’s it.” Or,” If it feels like you’re speaking too loud, or might have trouble driving home, we’ll say something about it when it happens, and arrange for you to get a ride home.”

No matter how well you handle this conversation, be prepared for a pushback, anything from denial, to Uncle Bob knocking back several drinks before he shows up. Al-Anon would be a great place to get more support and coaching. How you handle Bob’s addiction can make a difference, even if not right away.

Lindsell explains, “It typically takes a crises, in a sober moment, for someone to make a shift . . . their spouse leaving, losing their job, a drunk driving arrest, an inability to pay their bills. Yet there’s no guarantee it’s permanent, especially if not properly treated. Alcoholism is a chemical addiction, a brain disease rather than a behavioral disorder. Their belief system is what needs to be changed.”

If “Uncle Bob” is receptive to considering he has a problem, connect him to Alcoholics Anonymous, where a member can talk to him about what alcoholism is. Better yet, encourage him to get an evaluation (see Clark County Certified Chemical Dependency Services for local resources). Either way, he’s likely to deny he has a problem, as that’s part of how addiction works. Confrontation

Setting limits at holiday meals with alcohol is tricky to address. If you’d rather not nix alcohol altogether, set what limits you can all get on board with, such as “We’re having only one or two drinks over the whole course of the day, and that’s it.”

is not effective; gentle reality testing, asking reflective questions about issues “Bob” raises is more apt to engage him.

Heartfelt congratulations to you for courageously showing Bob and your family that you care enough to try to help, knowing despite your best efforts, there’s a high likelihood your help will not be well received, at least not now. YOUR MONEY'S WORTH

by Davi Nabors

Read each month as Battle Ground mother, Davi Nabors, coaches us on the art of penny pinching.

Your Money’s

WORTH

Instilling good habits in young kids helps set them up for a life of success. Many parents jump at the opportunity to encourage proper nutrition and teeth brushing as soon as those pearly whites are formed, but what about habits that relate to shopping wisely and managing money? You may be surprised to learn just how young these patterns can be established.

Toddlers’ brains are like little sponges, soaking in every drop of information their senses experience. As tots, they are ripe for learning in just about any environment, and the grocery store is one of the richest. When my boys, Liam and Harrison, were preschool age, I’d load them into a cart and wheel them through the produce sections of local stores, taking time to ex-plore the colors, textures, and shapes of all kinds of produce. As they got older, we applied more advanced, pre-math skills (sorting and counting) as we gathered groups of similar items. I’d eagerly prompt the boys with, “Here’s a red tomato. Let’s see how many other red fruits and veggies we can find.” And off we’d go to round up apples, red peppers, and cherry toma-toes. We’d also compare produce with differing characteristics, like bananas to oranges and celery to plums. Before the boys could lose interest in our interactive game, I’d quickly encour-age them to choose a few healthy snacks to take home. Then we’d head to the next aisle.

As my sons grew older, grocery shopping felt more like a chore than a field trip. But my curious kids always looked forward to visiting the produce section, where they knew they’d be challenged and introduced to something new. By the time they were in elementary school, they knew how to use the scale to weigh potatoes, form one dozen by adding and subtracting ba-nanas, estimate how many onions would add up to a pound, and compare pric-es of similar items (like Granny Smith

and Pink Lady apples). My boys, already keen on spotting a bargain, would zero in on the lower price fruit and insist I pur-chase it instead of its pricier counterpart. “So,” they’d declare with the thrill of discovery in their voices, “we can have more money to buy something else . . . like ice cream!”

Granted, now that Harrison is a tween and Liam is officially a teen, grocery shopping with Mom is considered pure drudgery. But when I offer them financial incentives based on helping me save money, their enterprising ears perk up. Liam assists me by discerning the true price of an item based on the cost of units per measure (cost per ounce, for example). When he finds that an advertised “bargain” is not the deal it’s cracked up to be, he lights up and steers me clear of the marketing ploy. Harrison is quite helpful, too. His steel clad memory stores prices of all sorts of goods from all sorts of stores. Therefore, I typically hear him saying, “Mom, buy this (product) here: It costs about two dollars more at (that other) store!” A recent trip found us comparing Trader Joe’s bananas, 19 cents each, to another store’s bananas, 39 cents per pound. We concluded that it depended upon the size of the banana. Har-rison, a young connoisseur of natural foods, was delighted to find Trader Joe’s winning the battle because they were selling large bananas that day.

I also find my savvy shoppers asking insightful ques-tions, such as: Should we wait until our next shop at

another store to buy this? Do we really need this item today? This package looks bigger, but how much is actually in it, and is it really a better bargain? These questions combine the knowl-edge of an informed consumer with the skill of delaying gratification. I’m thrilled to see frugal

thinking crystallize in their young minds.

The end of our shopping spree is usually painful for me, the one

who actually pays the bill; but we lighten the load by play-ing games at the checkout counter. Our favorite is play-ing the Price is Right while

The knowledge of all for the care of one.

By Nikki Klock

There are few recreational activities Pacific Northwesterners love more than indoor water parks. The opportunity to enjoy water comfortably in our lovely corner of the world is rare indeed, so the new Evergreen Wings & Waves water park in McMinnville, Oregon—about an hour south of Vancouver—is a welcome attraction, to both Yamhill County locals and visitors from miles around.

Evergreen Aviation CampusThe water park is the newest addition to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum campus, which includes the main museum (opened in 2001, with the centerpiece of Howard Hughes’s original Spruce Goose), and an IMAX theater (opened in 2007), surrounded by acres of vineyards, a campground, and even an RC airplane field, with plans to add a zipline in summer 2012. The water park structure itself is an engineering marvel, with a real retired 747 aircraft atop the roof, the starting point for the four main water slides.

Slides & RidesWhile not the most thrilling or death-defying, the water slides at Wings & Waves are fun and appropriate for both adults and kids. Three out of the four main slides are designed for those of a 42” minimum height to ride in with inner tubes and one is a body slide for those 48” and taller. In addition to smaller toddler-only slides, there

is a large forest-themed play structure geared toward middle age kids, topped with an Evergreen helicopter and giant bucket that tips when full. Other attractions within the park include a wave pool with a 20’x15’

screen playing sports and movies, a regular pool with two basketball hoops, and a large hot tub. The Milky Way Café serves concessions for snack and meal times (no outside food or beverage is allowed), and themed private party rooms are available for reservation.

EducationTo set it apart from other similar attractions, Evergreen Aviation owner Dell Smith pushed for a large educational element. Over 3,000 square feet of the facility is set apart as an H2O Museum, with over 20 hands-on exhibits that teach families all about the water cycle, water pressure, local geographic water systems, and more.

SafetyLife jackets of all sizes are provided free of charge on site, and life guards are always on site, trained and regularly drilled. In the rare case of a major emergency, the local hospital is just down the street.

With the holiday season in swing, parents’ thoughts are turned to gift ideas for their little ones. To help with selecting toys that are most beneficial for children, ASTRA provides an annual list of new toys that have high play value and are designed with a focus on what the child can do, rather than what the toy can do. This year’s list includes toys for toddlers to tweens, selected by over 500 leaders in the toy industry who vote for their favorites based on the toys’ uniqueness, ability to engage and grow with the child, safety, and of course, fun!

FAMILY FLICKS

A Monthly Family Movie Review Column

by Teresa Difalco

NEW IN THEATERS

NEW ON DVDRio

Real Steel

Thank you, Dreamworks! I was looking for this movie all summer. A rollicking, action-packed, cheer-from-your-seat kind of film, “Real Steel” is “Rocky” meets “The Champ,” with a loveable giant robot.

Hugh Jackman plays deadbeat dad and washed-up boxer, Charlie Kenton. It’s the near future, and robot boxing is a huge arena sport. Charlie, though, is down on his luck and fighting his bots in the fringe B-league circuit of carnivals

and rodeos. Charlie was once great, and could still be if he’d get out of his own way. That’s where 12-year-old Max, the son he barely knew about, comes in. Max’s mother has died and he’s wound up with Charlie for two months before going to live permanently with a wealthy aunt.

It’s a familiar storyline, but a solid one. Charlie is damaged and grumpy, his son is smart and stubborn. They spar, they bond, and then magic.

After recklessly destroying one bot after another, and winding up in a pile of debt, Charlie gives up and Max salvages a robot from the junkyard. He cleans him up, Charlie teaches him to shadow box (in wonderfully choreographed scenes) and the father-son duo move up to the big leagues. They are extreme underdogs, and the path to the finish is great entertainment.

Director Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”) and his team made these robots remarkably personable. They look and behave more like humans than showy displays of special effects, and it enhances the story.

The movie’s PG-13 rating is for mild cursing and fight scenes.

Theater Release: 10/6/2011; Rated PG-13 – Action / Sci-Fi / Drama; 127 minutes.

sFAMILY FLICKS

“Real Steel” was adapted from a short story by science-fiction writer, Richard Matheson, whose work was also the source for “I Am Legend” (2007) and “The Incredible Shrinking Man.”

“Rio,” from the creators of “Ice Age,” is a brightly-colored animated film that falls short of the promise of its trailer.

It starts off fine. A rare baby macaw is smuggled from a Brazilian jungle and falls out of a truck in Minnesota. A sweet little girl rescues him, names him Blu, and gives him a nice cushy life: free reign of the house, plus cookies and cocoa.

Blu, voiced by Jesse Eisenberg of “The Social Network,” is a charming little guy to humans, but his captivity has made him useless as a bird—he can’t even fly. Still, he’s one of only two living macaws. So when the ornithologist Tulio tracks Blu down, Linda agrees to take him to Brazil to mate with the other macaw and save the species.

That’s when the movie stalls, and it’s only about 15 minutes in. Anne Hathaway plays the female macaw, a savvy street-smart bird who has no use for the pampered Blu. When Linda and Tulio leave them alone in an elaborate cage to mate (an awkward scene for young viewers), a series of madcap adventures ensues. The two birds are kidnapped, then escape, but still chained together. Unwilling travel partners, they bicker constantly in typical screwball comedy fashion. Linda and Tulio set out to find them.

The movie’s of average length, but feels long. There are too many subplots, too many characters, too many songs to get caught up in any of them.

That said, there are also small delights. The colors and settings of the film are gorgeous, the animation is well-done, and an evil cockatoo—voiced by Jemaine Clement of “Flight of the Conchords”—almost steals the whole show. “Rio” is also a beautiful tribute to Brazil, the director’s homeland. The colors of Carnival pop, the tropical birds are stunning, and there’s a breathtaking scene of the lovebirds swooping off Corcovado Mountain past Christ The Redeemer that must have been amazing on the big screen in 3D.

“Rio” is a good movie for a rainy afternoon. Not so much for family movie night.

The film is rated G, however the mating subplot seems mature in some scenes for younger viewers.

Blu-Ray and DVD release: 8/2/2011; Rated G; 96 minutes.

Grade: C
