From the Vicarage
When it changes it changes so suddenly, it felt like summer only a
few days ago, but this evening, as I write, we’re well into the autumn,
with more leaves in the gutters than on the trees and darkness has
fallen before Look East is done. November comes like a thief in the
night, and brings with it a sombre mood as we commemorate those
whom we love but see no longer. In the Church’s calendar
All Souls’ Day is traditionally the day we remember by name our dear
departed – here at St Mary’s we mark it on the nearest Sunday with
a special Evensong and lighting of candles (do come if you can, 6pm,
Sunday November 6th) – but don’t make the mistake of thinking that
this is a gloomy occasion, no matter how ghoulish the secular
celebration of Halloween becomes. Halloween – the Eve of All Hallows
– actually marks All Saints’ Day, a day of thanksgiving for those who
in life were so tuned in to God that their very lives became hymns of
praise. In Orthodox churches in Russia and Greece nave is separated
from chancel by the iconostasis, a screen made up of icons of the
saints, sometimes dozens of them, and on All Saints’ Day each is lit
with a candle. I remember seeing it for the first time in a Romanian
church and it literally made me gasp.
That lighting of a candle, for All Saints’ or All Souls’, reminds us that
in Jesus Christ a light shines even in the darkness of the grave; it
reminds us that even in loss and despair we may have hope and
consolation, that even in the dead of winter, the promise of a new
dawn awaits, a dawn that will never die.
Yours in Christ,
Fr Richard.

Organ Update
John Norman, an independent organ advisor, visited the church on 20th September to assess the condition of the organ. The report, makes interesting reading. It describes the organ as 'of the very highest historic importance'. Three quotes will now be obtained from reputable organ builders based on the recommended work as laid out in the report. Following receipt of the quotes, grant applications will be made to various local and national bodies, including the Pilgrim Trust who gave a grant towards the last restoration of the organ in 1960. The organ builders to be contacted include the Northampton based Kenneth Tickell & Co. (who currently tune the organ) and Goetze & Gywnn (specialists in early organs who
restored the historic organ at Crick in 2009) The organ builders Goetze and Gwynn will be visiting soon to give a quote on the required work to the organ. Following discussions with them, it turns out the new organs they have built in the last fifteen years or so have been modelled on the organ in Finedon, in particular in tonal design but also to some extent in case design and registration. It’s good to know that organs modelled on our organ can be found in places such as St Lawrence Whitchurch, Edgware; St Niklaus in Olpe-Rehringhausen in Westphalia, Germany; Chapel of Magdalene College, Cambridge; Collegiate Church of St Endellion in Cornwall; and the recently installed organ in All Saints, Odiham, Hampshire. Dominic Gwynn tells me the Finedon organ has ‘always been close to our hearts’.

Mona’s Shop By Cheryl Harris
I bet lots of Finedon folk remember
Mona Yates’ bread and cakes
They were far superior
To the supermarket fakes,
It was a lovely little shop
With a tinkly bell on the door
And if my memory serves me well
Just floor boards on the floor
Her doughnuts were just amazing
With raisins and cream
I would just love to eat one now
But I can only dream
Her bread was just exquisite
Especially when it was hot
You had to be careful nibbling on the
way home
Or you would eat the lot.
She had a little chair
Where you could sit and rest
And ponder on the pastries
And choose the ones you liked the best
Her custard slice was lovely
Her cream horns quite divine
I tried to cook them for myself
But her’s were always better than mine.
Her apple pie melted in your mouth
And her jam tarts did too
She baked for many, many years
For the likes of me and you
Mona was a lovely person
Who always had the time for chats
She used to ride around Finedon on her
bike
In a variety of jaunty hats
Oh and she used to make birthday
cakes
And Christmas cakes as well
I know everyone who remembers her
Would say ‘Mona was a lovely gal’.

In My DayIn My DayIn My DayIn My Day The rambling of Hubert James In my day it was about this time of year that we had a cold snap which led to cold feet down on Cold Comfort Farm. And the Parish council jumped in and started the Cold War with Burton. Of course in them days we’d had our fill of warm wars and what with rationing we couldn’t afford to heat them anymore. The Council blamed a bloke called Len Redman who was leader of Burton Council. He believed in all folk being equal and he wanted everyone to have an equal share of the wealth of the town. To be fair that didn’t go down very well with Lord Weetabix the cereal millionaire but ordinary folk loved it. Now when word of this reached Finedon, the council got very jittery. Council leader Joe McCarthy was worried folk would expect an equal share of profits from his shoe lace business. Many of you will know that McCarthy‘s shoe laces had the whole market tied up. Years later he died of a massive heart attack when slip on shoes got invented. Anyway, Joe wanted to stamp out all talk of following the Redman model. He tried to get a wall built across the A6 to stop Len’s ideas crossing over. And anyone who opened their mouth in favour was branded a Red, and could be threatened with eviction from Finedon. Course, that meant all talk went underground. Folk whispered to one another around the back of the Gladstone. Rebel groups formed down the Allen Road Club and up at the Partridge Club. McCarthy convinced the Council that
Len Redman had undercover agents and spies undermining the whole fabric of life in Finedon. This was particularly worrying because in them days the fabric was a lovely soft cotton silk mix.. The whole saga came to a head when Tina Blunt who ran the chip shop challenged McCarthy. She stood up at a Council meeting and told him he was over reacting. She gave him a right battering and got a lot of support.. McCarthy sensed he’d had his chips. He was desperate. He immediately issued an eviction order demanding Tina left the building. But folk could see this wasn’t fair. Tina was no spy, she just believed in free speech. Townsfolk and the rest of the council backed her and McCarthy was forced into a U-turn. The red menace came to nothing. But local song smiths Llyod Webfeet and Tim Ricicle wrote a musical about Tina the chip shop rebel which became a world wide hit. It was called Eviction and featured the hit song; .’Don’t Fry For Me Agent Tina’
