November 2010 Cerritos Optimist Mouthpiece Jamie’s Optimist Notepad November: Please plan to attend the November 18 th meeting to hear our District representative for Personal Growth In- volvement (PGI), Marie Durflinger on how to personally get what you want from the Optimist experience. Our event for November is the “Wine Tasting” fundraiser, chaired/hosted by Diana Needham, taking place at the Gary King Winery (see attached). Everyone who attended last year had a great evening and an opportunity to stock up on delicious wines for the coming holiday season! Currently James Kang is busy setting up the “Essay“ contest, and, as Bob Cameron is at home recuperating, please let James know if you can lend a hand. Best wishes to Bob and to Ron Blyleven for a speedy recovery. Maynard, it was great to see you up and feel- ing better already! December: The “Needy Families” program is already under way for the December distribution. Food and gifts gathered will be sorted at and distributed from the former Hollywood Video store, located on the northwest corner of Artesia Boulevard and Bloomfield Avenue in Cerritos, by Optimists, Soroptimists and Octagon Club mem- bers. Please do your part by volunteering for at least one of the activities! The Christmas party on December 16 th at the Cerritos Library will be hosted again this year by Ellen Latino. Ellen informed me that she has al- ready been in touch with Santa and he told her that he will be putting in an appearance at the party! The “Lights on the Boats” parade hosted by yours truly will be on Sunday, December 19 th . Dues Increase: Last year Optimist International (OI) increased club dues to sustain its viability. Our club now pays over $6000 to OI and the Pacific Southeast District, which is a 28% increase in total dues paid two years ago. At the same time, the cost of all the meals we provide, breakfast, dinners, and special program events, have also increased. This year the club had to move $3000 out of the Special Programs account to cover the costs of club operations. This means that we have less money to donate to the many organizations in our community we have supported in the past. The proposed $10.00 quarterly increase in dues will allow the club to function within a budget that sustains our operation and continues to provide community support. The increase will be voted on at the December 4 th meeting. Get Involved: As you may have noticed, I have included a “Member Interest Finder” on the back of our agendas (see at- tached). This is a interest survey and will assist us in asking the right members when we need assistance or advice. Last month I called on our long time members to closely mentor newer members of our club so that they can decide which parts of Optimist International they want to experience. I believe that the sooner we can assist our new members to be a part of the fabric of our club and Optimist International, the more our club will fulfill their expectations. Once again, I encourage you to send any new/old program ideas you may have to me at [email protected] . We are planning to Sponsor the new Science Olympics this year and need to find ways to fund the proposed $2100 which far surpasses the $750.00 that we have budgeted for schools this year. Have a great month and keep in touch!!!
