    Thymely Notes

And let us give thanks for someone to thank.Gerhard E. Frost

As I searched my inspirational material for a quote for this month there were so many to choose from. I even found a humorous Pilgrim verse...who knew they had a sense of humor? But this quote says it all.

We certainly have many to thank within our own unit. We enjoyed a most successful herb sale thanks to everyone who contributed their time and talents. And to our fearless leaders, Marjorie and Aina, who made sure we were all on task, and all the details were taken care of with set up at CBG. Thanks also, to all who helped with the Ripe Festival at CBG in Sept. This was a great venue to get the word out about who we are, our sale and our beautiful garden. Thanks in advance to everyone who signed up to help with the CBG Winter Show. Our tree will look great thanks to LouAnn and her committee and the children's activity will be fun and informative thanks to Tricia and her volunteers. Make sure and come to the Winter Show this year. It's a wonderful place to bring family and friends.

While we're all spending more time indoors now, take a moment to go to the HSA website and read the current newsletter. There is a wonderful picture of Olga Scott at the Nashville conference this summer. At our own website there is a new picture of the herb spiral in all it's glory. The sequence of pictures looks great. Thanks Kate, for sharing with all of us.

As we move into the season of warm cozy homes, spending time with our families anddelicious feasts, let's all be thankful for someone to thank.

    Happy Thanksgiving,Bonnie

  • Herb Fair Acknowledgements and Reminders

Thank you to those of you who contributed your time and talent to make our 65th Herb Fair a most memorable milestone. Special thanks to my illustrious Co-Chair Aina, whose support I greatly appreciate, and to the Dept. Chairs for their dedication and hard work.

Customers were warmly welcomed and proceeded down the fragrant hallway, stopping to enjoy the Garden Gifts and Tussie Mussie Departments. Clark Hall was again transformed into a fabulous Herbal Market. Products were beautifully displayed in every department.

We did not have as much product in some areas as in previous years, but business was brisk and the result rewarding. The weather was perfect. Hundreds of people enjoyed shopping and then proceeded to go outside to tour our Garden.

Harmony reigned and the sheer enjoyment of the day was felt by everyone. We heard many wonderful comments about our unique products and the friendliness of our members. If our main objective is to educate and promote the use of herbs, we certainly succeeded. Our members did a great job of educating our customers.

Set up and take down went well. Our customers appreciated having Will Call and it seemed to encourage them to purchase more items. The accounting group did a suburb job of collecting and counting the money.

The Fair wrap-up meeting for Department Chairs is Monday Nov 1st at 10:00 AM at my home. The meeting will be followed by a light lunch (RSVP - 247 4058.) Please bring 3 copies of your report and your folder along with suggestions and recommendations for the future.

Being the 2nd Vice Chair has been very rewarding and educational for me. The fellowship of our group working together is very special. My heart is filled with love and appreciation for the WRHS. Your talents never cease to amaze.

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving. We all are truly blessed.Marjorie FowWays and Means Chair

  • Herb Garden News

The gardening season is coming to a close and the final winterizing activities are being completed. The bulbs have been planted so that we can all look forward to a beautiful Spring display of white tulips on the Terrace and pink and white in the Fragrance Garden plus blue hyacinths in Fragrance. Many thanks go to Robin Johanson for her help with planting of the bulbs. Robin has beenour faithful Horticulturist for the past 5 years and we are grateful to have her assistance and knowledge every Tuesday and Thursday. We also depend on her greatly when digging, hauling and lugging activities are needed.

The garden has experienced an overall good year with only the usual issues of not enough water, too much water, extreme heat and mystery insects - just the usual challenges of gardening. The Herb Spiral, which was suggested and designed by LouAnn Hanink, was a big success all season. It created an ideal opportunity for visitors to ask questions and learn about something quite unique which they could build themselves. Thanks to LouAnn and everyone who assisted in sharing bricks and helping to build the spiral and plant the plants.

Each and every part of the garden was well cared for by our diligent, faithful workers all season long. The results of those hot work days were rewarded time and time again when we heard visitors reply with "this garden is just lovely" or "I can't believe this is a volunteer garden" or thank you for making this such a beautiful garden.

I want to thank everyone who helped in the garden this year and to say it was a pleasure to learn from you, work with you and to be with you in the garden. The Western Reserve Herb Society Garden is truly a very special place. And remember.................

As I take over responsibility of keeping everyone informed about the WRHS, I plan to look back to our stellar past and as well as to the future that is epitomized by our new members. Future issues will contain interviews with our new members as well as memorable moments of our past. These snapshots in time c
