Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)

Copyright 2010 FUJITSU TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS

Increases performance up to 10Gbit/s Lowers costs by bringing together

Fibre Channel and Ethernet in the same adapter and ToR (Top of Rack) switch enables consolidation of storage

and networking I/O reduces the number of adapters,

cables and switch ports used in servers

reduces data center power and cooling costs

Situation in Datacenters Advantages of FCoE

Data centers need to increase performance and also keep costs to a minimum

Running an Ethernet-based LAN and an FC-based SAN (Storage Area Network) over separate infrastructures is: Expensive

• SANs have extensive cabling• Heavy virtualization needs a lot of

physical I/O leading to a lot of cables

Slower than using FC over the same LAN infrastructure

FCoE increases performance and decreases costs in data centers

Faster Access To Your Data - 6 Gb/s SAS

Copyright 2010 FUJITSU TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS

6 Gb/s SAS (SAS 2.0) enhances the performance introduced with first-generation SAS devices.

Advantages of 6 Gb/s SAS (SAS 2.0) For speedy data access:

doubles current transfer rate with 6 Gb/s signaling Faster and more HDDs can be attached to a single controller

For full flexibility: backwards compatibility with existing SAS/ SATA systems, with 1,5Gb/s or 3Gb/s

More value for your money: More efficient usage of available bandwidth vs. SAS 1.0 Improved bandwidth to power consumption ratio

PRIMERGY RX900 – Where to UseRX900 S1: It starts, where 4 way servers end up !The x86 Host-of-Choice for mission critical scale-up workloads

Copyright 2010 FUJITSU TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS

Addresses the problems with “scale-up” RX 900 S1 has it all:

Efficient Scalability, High Availability by Design, Performance & massive I/O Bandwidth

Corporate databases and heavy load transactional processing (Oracle, Microsoft SQL-server, MySQL, DB2, ..) Corporate Workloads where response time and throughput is paramount

Corporate SAP/ ERP and Business Intelligence/ Decision Support services Centralized mission critical workloads where “performance for time-to-result“ is paramount

Large Scale Consolidation of Virtual Servers to a central point Mission critical consolidation of Virtual or Real servers to fewer instances saves costs to own Run many “big VMs” w/o performance barriers

RISC / Unix Migration to x86 mission critical host Benefit in OPEX & CAPEX while retaining all mission critical attributes

Traditional Frontside Bus System Architecture

Copyright 2010 FUJITSU TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS

New Intel QPI Nehalem-EX Achitecture

Memory population independant from CPU population

Memory is „global“ pool Frontside Bus carries all CPU/Memory/ I/O

traffic Entire memory range is accessible through

the core chipset

Design principle up to Xeon 74xx series

„Nehalem“ Intel Xeon Series introduces „on chip“ integrated Memory Controllers

QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) bus system for CPU-to-CPU and CPU-to-I/O communication –replacement of FSB

NUMA Memory Architecture Memory is LOCAL to each CPU Memory is „remote“ for other CPUs

Memory population is DEPENDANTfrom CPU population

I/O bandwidth scales by # of I/O hubs

Intel Xeon 7500 and QPI have changed old x86 design rules

QPI

QPI changes „old rules“

Benefits Of „Glue-less“ 8 Socket Design Feature Full QPI Mesh implemented on

single main board

Full scale-up inside the RX900 chassis

Designed with Intel Standard Chipsets

Up to 4 I/O hubs with QPI mesh

„Plug-in“ CPU memory boards

PSU redundancy and Phase redundancy (Dual Power Feed) can be combined(2+2 hot-plug redundant PSU )

Benefit Lowest possible latencies for CPU/

Memory access high performance

Upscaling without post-installation infrastructure changes. No complexity issues and no point of failures caused by „external glue“ components and cables

No vendor design dependencies

I/O bandwidth scales-up in parallel with CPU count, always ensuring a „balanced“ system behavior

easy to scale and maintain, 4,6 or 8 CPU granularity

Higher protection schemes against power outages

New RAS Features for Mission Critical Operation

Copyright 2010 FUJITSU TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS

NEHALEM-EX Processor RAS by MCA enables to handle „un-correctable“ errors

Enhances server uptime by letting the OS react properly on uncorrectablefailures.

Provides software an opportunity to react before the error turns down the system

Extended RAS functionality, formerly only available with Highend Itanium Architecture

Normal Status with Error prevention

Error corrected

Hardware CorrectableErrors

Error contained or „isolated“

- isolate or replace defective HW element - replace with new resource- mark it as „poisoned“ = do not use

System works together with Firmware or with Operating System to continue operation

Despite of an intentionally forced memory defect, the Nehalem-EX systems , working with Windows Server 2008 R2 , kept on the operation without interruption. On another Nehalem-EX server with MCA disabled , the memory defect caused a „Bluescreen“. With the new feature „MCA Recovery“ the Nehalem-EX will provide RAS functionality of RISC systems in the x86 server segment (source: Intel) . The Feature „MCA Recovery“ must be supported by the Operating Systems.

RX900 S1 provides 4 x hot-plug PCIe slots

Back-end Tier servers with mission critical workloads usually connect to corporate storage and/or networkswith redundant I/O connectivity setup.

Hot-plug PCIe enables to re-establish theredundant I/O connectivity without system stop In case of failure, redundant controller takes over Server is kept in operation Hot-plug PCIe enables to replace faulty controller

without system stop Redundant I/O connectivity is re-established

No need to wait for scheduled system downtime and maintenance
