Organizers promise a bigger and better sale this year. As the newsletter goes to press, local artists have signed up to sell their pottery, photographs, small paintings, jewelry, mosaics, stationery and other afford- able, one-of-a-kind items. The sale offers the opportunity to support local artists and our own C.C. Mellor Memorial Library, all while avoiding the holiday hysteria at the mall. Add free refreshments, including hot beverages and cookies from Sweetie Sweetie Bakery in Regent Square, and you have a relaxed and enjoyable holiday shopping experi- ence. In addition to the items for sale, there will be several items raffled off. These pieces, donated by the craftsper- sons participating in the sale, will be on display in the library December 2-9. The raffle benefits the library as well. According to Librarian Sally Bogie, the library will become increasingly dependent upon fund raising efforts in the community such as this. The budg- et for next year is going to be even tighter than usual because of the increase in the minimum wage and the anticipated increase in energy costs. Your support of library events makes it possible for the library to continue their programming for children, teens, and adults. For more information on the Edgewood Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair, contact organizer Elizabeth Thomas at (412) 243-4760, or call the library at (412) 731-0909. Progressive DinnerFor Edgewoodians who have never

yet joined in this annual event andwho are asking themselves, just whatis a progressive dinner?, the EdgewoodFoundation has done your research.According to www.progressivedinners.com, “A Progressive Dinner is wherethe individual courses of a dinner partyare held at different locations and host-ed by different people with differentguests. Everyone then meets for coffeeand a drinks party at a final location.”

The Foundation is doing the plan-ning, too, but beware: the processstarts early for this midwinter tradition,so mark your calendars for Saturday,February 11, 2007 and get those RSVPforms (on this page) in early.

All proceeds benefit the EdgewoodFoundation, which provides funds formany community programs, includingbeautification of Edgewood, theEdgewood Symphony Orchestra, andthe annual town meeting.

Advance planning is the key to thisevent, so the earlier you return yourRSVP, the more likely you are to getyour first choice of activity – either

hosting a course or providing food orbeverage.

Once again, there will be a recipecontest for both chicken and vegetari-an entrees. The recipe must be an ele-gant one-dish, easily reheatable entrée.Please include your recipe with yourRSVP. Winners receive dinner for twoat this year’s event.

The evening promises good food, good fun, and good people comingtogether for a great fundraiser.

Newcomers’ ReceptionThanks to everyone who joined the

Edgewood Foundation for the annual“welcome to the community” event fornew Edgewoodians. This year’s recep-tion was held at the home of Nikki andChad Augustine, and the Foundationthanks them for their hospitality aswell.

Elected officials and leaders of com-munity organizations introduced ournew neighbors to the groups andevents that make Edgewood a specialplace to live.

Public Safety Town MeetingWe look forward to seeing you at our

annual town meeting on Friday, Novem-ber 17 at The Western PennsylvaniaSchool for the Deaf Auditorium. Themeeting starts at 7 p.m. with a discussionof the police department’s accomplish-ments this past year, and leads into whatwe would like to accomplish in the future. There will be a question and answer ses-sion at the end of the meeting. Refresh-ments will also be provided. We hopethat you can attend.

Non-emergency Phone NumberOur emergency services personnel

that answer the phones at our stationhave still been receiving quite a fewcalls for police assistance on our non-emergency number of (412) 242-9994.The borough offices have also beenreceiving these calls on (412) 242-4824.The calls they have received have notbeen serious in nature, such as parkingcomplaints, suspicious activity, orminor thefts.

However, if you require police assis-tance, even for things that are not seri-ous in nature, you must dial 911. Ifyou call the non-emergency number, the personnel that answer the phonewill typically instruct you to dial 911,anyway, since they do not dispatch thepolice. Our non-emergency line isreserved for things like parking call ins, questions about parking tickets, anytype of follow up with an officer abouta report that has already been taken, questions about obtaining a policereport, and things of this nature. Wejust wanted to take a few minutes toclear up any confusion there may stillbe since our switch to County 911.

ResignationWe sadly announce the resignation

of Officer Randall Olsen from theEdgewood Police Department. OfficerOlsen has been employed with our bor-

ough for about a year, and is currentlya full-time officer. He resigned inOctober to pursue another full-time jobin a related field. We would like tothank Officer Olsen for his dedicationthroughout his employment. Best ofluck to him in all his future endeavors.

Light-up NightDo you believe only one more

month left in this year – where does thetime go? For the EVFD it is time to pre-pare for the arrival of Santa to light thetree on light-up night, Friday,December 1. We are still in negotiationswith Santa to get him to return for hisannual ride around town and stop atthe station on December 9. The deal isjust about sewed up. We did promisehim some delicious cookies fromSweetie Sweetie Bakery. Stay tuned tofor further updates.

LuminariaWe will also be selling luminary this

year, I know it’s November but we liketo plan ahead. Watch the Decembernewsletter for block captains and saledates.

High ExpectationsJust as any parents do, we are

preparing the new baby’s room – well, something like that. With the due dateof December 14 for Rescue 137, we arecleaning and rearranging to make anice home. Although it doesn’t lookmuch like a truck from our early pic-tures of the cab and body, we know itsoon will. We’re proud to have it fea-tured on page one of this newsletter.

Safety TipNow that we are all huddling in the

house now is a good time to invest in acarbon monoxide detector, if you don’talready have one. They should beplaced outside all sleeping areas.

In Edgewood we have had manykamikaze squirrels that slide into a hotwater heater vent pipe. The carbonmonoxide kills the squirrel, leaving ablocked flue. The end result is that youhave carbon monoxide coming intoyour house and the odor of somethingburning. Place guards on your fluepipes and invest in the CO detectors.
