St. Joseph’s General Hospital FoundationToday and Tomorrow

Being of service to the community is at the heart of the St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation. It remains im-portant today and will be in the future as we look toward the master plan for health care in our region when acute care services will transition to a new hospital in 2017.

Established in 1993, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation has built a solid reputation to nancially support the provision of health care in the Comox Valley.

e Foundation has started the process and will soon undergo a period of transition as it expands its mandate to encompass the new Island Health Comox Valley Hospital while continuing to support St. Joseph’s General Hospital in its changing role.

Both the community and Island Health have been very supportive and have encouraged the Foundation to expand its mandate to nancially support both facilities so that we can continue to ensure the best possible care is available.

As we begin on our journey of evolution, we will continue to ensure that Comox Valley health Care is the very best, today and into the future with educational support to sta , environmental improvements and equipment upgrades.

Whether retired to the Comox Valley, reside elsewhere but continue to call the Valley home, raising a young fami-ly, or planning for retirement, we can all play a part in supporting local health care for this region.

Please consider joining the Foundation this year as a monthly donor. Your monthly donation can be as little as $5.00 per month and will provide St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation and the Comox Valley Hospital with a sustainable funding source. And with your charitable tax receipt, you are eligible to win two WestJet tickets.

Imagine for a moment the impact accident, illness or injury can have on you, your loved ones or a friend. Please join us in our quest today and together we can help save lives, improve lives and even begin lives here in the Comox Valley.

Foundation to help build a healthy communityWestJet is proud of the social investment they make in the communities they serve.

St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation is excited to announce that WestJet has partnered with us again this year on a community campaign to help create sustainability for our Hospital. From November 1 through to December 16, 2014 every person who signs up to become a monthly donor will be entered for a chance to win a ight for two aboard WestJet to any location they y.

Not only do you win through giving back but you could win a getaway too!

For those new to the work of the Foundation, perhaps we may inspire you to join us on our journey.

Private donations allow priority medical equipment and patient comfort items to be replaced faster than if government funding alone was relied on. e reality is that increased needs for updated medical equipment make it impossible for government to replace equipment as promptly as needed. A monetary contribution to the Foundation will help us to be able to purchase more equipment and enhance services at our Hospital, bene ting the many residents of the Comox Valley and surrounding area.

Monthly donations are a convenient way to spread your donation over the entire year. It lets you budget your generosity – and you receive a single, cumulative tax receipt at year end. You may choose to have funds withdrawn regularly from your bank account or from your credit card. It’s easy, and you may update or cancel the arrangement at any time.

Your support could be something as simple as a $10.00 perpetual monthly donation. is donation can provide St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation with a more sustainable funding source, and you with a charitable tax receipt and con dence in local healthcare for you, your family and friends.

e Sta Lotto program is a wonderful example of how a group can come together to support their organization. Last year it generated over $38,000. We are ecstatic at these results as it shows the commu-nity that our sta truly stand behind our Hospital.

Donations can be made in person at the Foundation o ce at the front entrance to the Hospital, by calling Meghan or Lynn at (250) 890-3046, online by visiting www.cvhospitalfoundation.com or you can sign up to become a monthly donor by completing the form on page 1.

Here, Now and BeyondChanging Role of St Joseph’s General Hospital

With the new Island Health Comox Valley Hospital opening in 2017, and the transfer of acute care services to the new hospital, the role of St Joseph’s will evolve and change. During this transition St. Joseph’s rst priority is to continue to deliver safe, accessible health care services of high quality that meet needs of the community.

“Our community is so very generous to St Joseph’s be it in the form of donations, charitable gi s or volunteer service”, shared Jane Murphy, President and CEO of St Joseph’s. “We are so grateful for this support and it has allowed St. Joseph’s to provide exceptional service to the community and has been key in supporting the hospital in its recent achievement of Accreditation with Exemplary Standing (the highest award possible) from Accreditation Canada”.

Where it is deemed essential to support the delivery of quality patient care and meet the industry’s safety standards St Joseph’s is continuing to complete minor renovations, enhance technology and develop programs. e latest development we will see an expansion of the Cancer Care Unit in the Spring of 2015. is Cancer Care program continues to see 10% – 20% increases in the number of visits every year and requires additional space to provide this much needed service.

Currently St Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, St Joseph’s, the Comox Valley Hospice Society and Island Health, are working to establish four Hospice beds on the St Joseph’s site, in the Views. An architect is nishing the plans and the renovation project will commence shortly with a goal of opening the hospice beds in the Spring of 2015.

In determining its future role beyond 2017, St. Joseph’s has established a Task Force in partnership with Island Health to explore options. St Joseph’s wishes to continue its mission in residential and hospice care for the community as part of its future role. One of the objectives of the future role is to enhance the residential care program at e Views in order to accommodate private room occupancy that meet current standards and practices, and to enhance the layout and design for those residents with dementia. Further, other non acute programs and services are being explored that could be o ered on the site and meet community need.

e goal is to have a clearer vision of the future role by the end of 2015 so that the hospital can begin moving forward in that direction. e owner of St Joseph’s, the Diocese of Victoria is fully supportive of this exploration of a new role for St. Joseph’s.

“St. Joseph’s is proud to have been of service to the Comox Valley for over 100 years, always growing and developing with the community in its mission to provide Care with Compassion”, expressed Jane Murphy. “We will continue to serve our community in our current role now for the next several years and in our future role beyond 2017. We are excited about how St Joseph’s can play a new role beyond 2017 in meeting the needs of the community in di erent and innovative ways.”
