Paper star by OMCompany, $32
Having spent Christmas last year one sand dune away from the ocean in Nags Head, we didn’t have the traditional tree with ornaments that most people have. This year it would be fun to hang this glittering star instead of having a tree. One World Market is a fair trade company, partly staffed by volunteers and has great gifts for the creative genius in your family.

Ways to Give BackLooking to give back to the Durham community? Making plans to
shop for your holiday gifts? Consider donating or volunteering this year with the following organizations!
Salvation Army: Angel Tree andAdopt-A-Family909 Liberty St. Durham, NC(919) 688-7306 ext. 111
If you’re heading to the mall for some holiday shopping, consider buying a few extra gifts! The Salvation Army provides children and families with Christmas gifts every year that they would not receive without donations from students and residents in the Durham community.
The Angel Tree program pairs over 1,100 children ages 0 to 12 with individuals who donate gifts every year. You will be assigned to one child, learn his or her name, age, gender, clothing sizes and “wish gifts,” so you can shop specifically for that child.
The Adopt-A-Family program is similar, but instead of adopting one child, you adopt an entire family to purchase gifts for. Price limit is $125.
All gift donations must be dropped off by December 12th at the Salvation Army location on Liberty Street. Call Debbie Avolin to get involved.
Volunteer Center of Durham:Share Your Christmas700 W. Main St. Durham, NC(919) 684-9690
For the past 39 years, Share Your Christmas has matched individuals and groups interested in donating new gifts to disadvantaged Durham residents referred by a Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) social worker. The program is coordinated by Durham County DSS and The Volunteer Center.
For more information on how you or your group can become involoved, please call (919) 684-9690 or email [email protected].
Durham Rescue Mission:Christmas Toy Give-A-Way1201 E. Main St., Durham, NC(919) 688-9641www.durhamrescuemission.org

Meals on Wheels:Senior Santa Program2522 Ross Road, Durham, NC (919) 667-9424www.mowdurham.org
As joyous as the holiday season may be for some, for others it is the loneliest time of year. It is for this reason that each year, Meals on Wheels of Durham strives to provide each meal recipient with a holiday gift. They have been able to touch each client in this small but very meaningful way for the past three years only with the help of compassionate community members. They ask that you consider a donation of an inexpensive (under $20) item that can be given as a gift to a needy Durham senior.
Donated items of any type may be delivered to the Meals on Wheels office between the hours of 8:30a – 3:00p Monday through Friday. See http://www.mowdurham.org/special-events/ for a list of suggestions.
United Way: “Community Reads”Book Drive2400 Perimeter Park Dr., Morrisville, NC 27560(919) 460-8687
Help children and adults learn to read. Hold a book drive or donate books from your own shelf. United Way is collecting used and new books for readers of all ages, infant through adult. Books will be distributed to agencies working to increase literacy throughout Durham, Johnston, Orange, and Durham Counties. Donations can be dropped off at the United Way office every Friday from January 23 to February 27, 2015.
Genesis Home Gift Wrapping300 N. Queen St., PO Box 25426, Durham(919) 683-5878
Genesis Home works to end homelessness for families with children by providing housing and supportive services to foster independence. Help wrap gifts to raise awareness and support for Genesis Home, a non-profit dedicated to helping families overcome homelessness.
Prospective volunteers can sign up online genesishome.org.
Ronald McDonald House-Durham:Wishing Tree506 Alexander Ave., Durham, NC (919) 281-1064
Since 1980, the Ronald McDonald House of Durham has offered a comforting home away from home and a community of support for seriously ill children and their families. Their programs provide families with the comforts of home –private bedrooms, inviting community spaces, home-cooked meals and a stocked kitchen, a playroom, computer room and laundry facilities – as well as a network of support through interactions with other families, staff and volunteers.
Check out their Holiday With List for gift ideas for children staying at the House, stocking stuffers for their parents, as well as ways to help the House or Family Rooms. And for a meaningful activity this holiday season, check out our Wishing Tree program, which include 36 downloadable ornaments for your tree. Contact [email protected] or visit www.rmhdurham.org for more info.
