Objectives for today . . .
We will be able to recall the meanings of ethos, pathos, and logos.
We will be able to identify ethos, pathos, and logos in images and sentences.
We will be able to create our own images to represent ethos, pathos, and logos.
We will be able to write our own sentences using our ethos, pathos, and logos to accompany our images.
Let’s share our persuasive letters! Take out your persuasive letters
(homework) and get ready to share them! I can hardly wait to hear the three persuasive appeals. Hopefully you’ll be able to convince me not to give you homework over Thanksgiving break!
Let’s refresh our minds . . . Turn to your group members and
remind each other of what you learned about ethos, pathos, and logos.
What are they, what do they mean, and how can they be used, particularly in your anti-bullying guides?
ETHOS
LOGOS
PATHOS
Let’s play 4 corners!
Here are the rules: You must stand up. When I show you a
sentence / image, you must run to the corner that matches it. For example, if you were to see the sentence stating, “People with low energy should drink Red Bull,” you should run to the corner you believe it matches.
If you think this is an example of logos, you should run to the corner marked “LOGOS. If you are unsure, you may run to the “UNSURE” corner.
Pathos
You deserve a moment to kick back.
Ethos
Real athletes choose Nike.
Logos
Sprite is 100% sugar-free.
Logos
A 32-ounce bottle of Tide holds enough detergent to wash 50 loads.
Pathos
Buy a corvette and you’ll be as happy as these two.
Ethos
Cardiologists recommend Ecotrin more than any other type of aspirin.
Of what are you trying to persuade the new students at The SAE through your anti-bullying guide?
Now let’s create a storyboard using ethos, pathos, and logos
ETHOSAs a teacher, I am aware of the bullying that takes place at The SAE, and with my students, I am determined to creating a solution to the problem.
PATHOSBullying leads to low self-esteem and feelings of helplessness.
LOGOS
Bullying is an issue that negatively affects students in schools around the world.
Bullying is an issue plaguing the lives of high school students. It is a prevalent issue that needs to be monitored and resolved. According to Ron Banks, “Bullying in schools is a worldwide problem that can have negative consequences for the general school climate and for the rights of students to learn in a safe environment without fear” (44).
