Reader’s Response 13

“And Clarisse. You never talked to her. I talked to her. And men like Beatty are afraid of her. I can’t understand it. Why should they be afraid of someone like her?” Guy Montag (p. 71)

Discussion Question 1

Who is the “they” that Clarisse is referring to?

“…the real reason, hidden underneath, might be they didn’t want people sitting like that, doing nothing, rocking, talking; that was the wrong kind of social life. People talked too much. And they had time to think.” (p. 67)

Scenario 1

Your friends call you. They're drunk at a party and want to leave. They know that they should not drive. They're calling you for a ride. The government catches this conversation and realizes that someone is serving alcohol to minors. They zero in on the address and bust the party.

Discussion Question 5 Which type of parent would you rather have? “Parent A” takes on a sort of laissez faire and

very liberal attitude. The child is free to make their own mistakes in life and hopefully this child will learn from it.

On the other hand, “Parent B” is very conservative. The child is restricted from going anywhere or doing anything without adult supervision.

Explain your decision.

Analogy

Parents are to the government as kids are to society

Parents can take away privileges like how the government can take away our rights.

Examples:How our rights are being violated Under this act, the government picked him up and has held

Padilla in solitary confinement ever since 2002. He was not allowed to talk to a lawyer or anyone else for the first 21 months. For nearly five years, the government tortured him in every possible way short, maybe, of pulling out his fingernails. They prevented him from sleeping. They chained him to the floor and deprived him of light and heat. They drugged him with hallucinogenic chemicals and threatened to kill him. It is not a surprise that today Padilla suffers from post-traumatic stress and memory gaps, and is unable to watch videos of his interrogations. Like many other victims of torture, he has been turned into one of the walking dead. Note: Jose Padilla was eventually found guilty, but the fact

remains that they presumed him guilty and threw him in GITMO without due process. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Another example Lundeby said the USA Patriot Act stripped her son of his

due process rights. We have no rights under the Patriot Act to even defend them, because the Patriot Act basically supersedes the Constitution,” she said. Note: Ashton Lundeby was later found guilty.

Nonetheless, the government abused their power and violated his rights.

Discussion Question 7

How does the Patriot Act relate to Fahrenheit 451? Think about the kind of society that the

characters live in, specifically the type of government they have.
