NOVEMBER 16 at 8am, 9:30am & 11am YOUTH SUNDAY

DON’T LABEL ME

A look at the labels we give ourselves and what Jesus says about us!

This year’s Youth Sunday services allows us to embrace a theme that speaks to our NUMC youth.

All of us carry labels that we use to identify ourselves, whether they were given to us by others or whether we’ve given them to ourselves. Most are positive, but some of them are negative and painful. Teenagers often carry the pain of these labels with a heavy heart.

It can take a lifetime to let go of the negative labels we are given to realize who we truly are, and to hear what God says about who we are.

We read in the Bible that Jesus came and sacrificed himself for all people, so that everyone would experience the love of God and have a relationship with God, regardless of age, race, gender, education…tall, thin, funny, shy. Paul reminds the people in Galatia of this and it still stands true for us today.

Galatians 3:26-28 (NRSV): For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

Let this conversation remind each of us that “I am clothed with Christ: precious, forgiven and [most of all] loved.”

VESPERS SERVICE & POTLUCK DINNER ALL SAINTS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 2, 5pm

The combined choirs of NUMC and Hockessin UMC will present a choral vespers service. Come on out for a wonderful evening of prayer and singing! The service will be followed by a potluck dinner in Heritage Hall—please bring a dish to share.

To the People of Newark United Methodist Church,

Grace and Peace of the blessing Christ be with you.

For centuries, November in the United States has focused on Thanksgiving. This often is traced to the Thanksgiving feast in 1621 celebrated at the Plymouth

Plantation, Massachusetts, but there are some indications that a thanksgiving service was held in Jamestown, Virginia in 1610. Regardless, giving thanks to God for our blessings is a part of our country’s DNA.

As Christians, we are to be continually grateful for God’s love gifted to us through Jesus Christ. To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything God has given us—and God has given us everything.

“Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference.” –Thomas Merton

Take a breath and give thanks to God our creator. When talking with a loved one or friend, give thanks to Christ our friend and companion in life. Open your eyes and see the presence of the Spirit and give thanks.

May your Thanksgiving celebration be rich with God.

Shalom,

Rev. Dr. David M. Palmer

Galatians 3:15-17: Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.

Meet the Trustees: Stewards of NUMC’s Property

From left: Rob Cappiello (NUMC Business Manager), Rick Fehr, Eric Hottenstein, Terry Stoneman, Portia Loomis, Jim Mylin, Scott Rowe, Dan Strunk, Pete Schmalz, Sue Stauffer

The role of the Trustee Committee within the Methodist Church is to provide supervision, oversight, and care of the real property, both land and buildings, as well as the furnishings and equipment owned by the church. To meet these responsibilities, we work to have the facility best support the ministries and programs of the church. Please seek us out; we welcome comments on how our church facility can better enhance the congregation’s worship and service life.

The Pickles are IN!

Our long-awaited bread and butter pickles have arrived. Pints are available for $5 in the main office.

These are Jessie Spear’s famous recipe, now made annually by her daughter-in-law Bonnie—and they’re fabulous. If you haven’t tried them, give yourself a treat!

All proceeds go to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.

Young Adult Announcements

Young Adult Bible Study: Tuesday nights, 6:30-8:30pm (Rm 109)

We’ll begin a new study on the book of 1 Samuel on November 18—all young adults are welcome to join us weekly for Bible study and fellowship time!

Young Adult worship night: Friday, November 21, 7-8pm (Chapel)

Let us gather together to worship God through music, prayer and fellowship. Childcare can be available to those who need it. Contact Melanie if you would like to be involved with music or worship planning!

Spark Sunday School

On Sunday, 11/16, there will be a One-Room Sunday School experience in Room 211 for

those in grades K-3 who do not wish to attend Youth Sunday. Grades 4-6 are invited to attend the Youth Sunday 9:30am worship service with their families. Any GREEN Teamer who wishes to help in the One-Room classroom MUST contact Donna ([email protected]) by Thursday, 11/13 to see if there is still room to help, AND they MUST wear their team t-shirt on 11/16.

During Advent, Spark classes will be following the Christmas Around the World sermon series. Beginning 11/23, each week (except All Worship Sunday, 12/14), classes will experience an art project, a recipe, a science project, or Christmas games from a different region (each class will experience each type of workshop once during the four weeks of this unit). Our tentative schedule:

11/23—Europe 11/30—Asia 12/7--Africa 12/21—Latin cultures

P2P reminder: Children receive “Present to Participate” points each week for attending Sunday School, bringing a Bible, bringing a regular Sunday School and/or mission offering, memorizing the unit’s Bible verse, having a parent serve as Shepherd/Leader, attending choir rehearsal (only if they also have attended Spark that morning), singing in choir in a worship service. Bonus points are available for bringing a guest to Spark, and for Crusader Choir members who attend Spark at 9:30am when they also are singing in church at 11am (three points). An additional three bonus points are awarded to every non-choir child who attends All Worship Sunday and signs the pew attendance pad with his/her name and grade level (VERY important)!

Wonder what we’ll be doing with all those points at the end of the first half? Complete details are available on the Church Information/Announcements page of the website.

Sundays at 9:30am

Companions in Christ (Wesley Lounge) have been using the Living the Questions, 2.0 DVD curriculum, which features many progressive Bible scholars and leaders exploring the topics of Journey, Reconciliation, and Transformation. Each week is a self-contained discussion, so please feel free to join the conversation!

Sunday Morning Bible Study (Rm 121) will finish our exploration of the Book of Acts and then go on to discuss recorded sermons. This is a really great drop-in opportunity, so please consider stopping by!

The Teachables (Samuel Wesley Rm) will spend 11/2 discussing a DVD presentation by Professor Amy-Jill Levine, The Caananite Woman, and will look at the interaction between Jesus and sisters Mary and Martha on 11/9. Then we’ll begin a five-week study of Adam Hamilton’s DVD study, Forgiveness. Always an informative discussion, highly recommended!

Trying Christians (Memorial Lounge) will spend most of November examining the Apocryphal Gospels with facilitator Jerry Swalley. Please consider joining this informative discussion.

Weekday Studies

Wednesday Afternoon Bible Study

We use the DVD-based study, Historical Jesus, by Professor Bart D. Ehrman. In mid-November, we’ll begin an Advent study, When God Came Down, by James Harnish (cost of resource book, $7). The Ehrman study will continue in January 2015.

Code Purple Sanctuary According to some sources, another cold, snowy winter is on the way, which means there’ll be a need for sanctuary on nights when the temperature falls below 20 degrees. The following locations hosted 593 people-nights between 12/10/13-3/26/14: NUMC, NewArk UCC, Calvary Baptist, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Thomas Episcopal, First Presbyterian, St. Paul’s Lutheran. Volunteers are needed to set up, prepare food (4-6pm), and act as monitors (shifts are 6-8pm, 8-12pm, 12-6am). Donations of soup, stews (may be left in downstairs freezer clearly labeled for Code Purple), and sandwich supplies are much appreciated. Look for more information in weekly e-blasts and Sunday bulletins. For additional information and sign up to volunteer or donate, contact Mary Hudson ([email protected]; 737-6676).

United Methodist Student Sunday Sunday, November 30 is United Methodist Student Sunday. A special offering will be collected to furnish scholarships and loans for students attending United Methodist-related colleges and universities.

Thanksgiving is our focus this month. The library has many interesting and informative books for children of all ages about our national holiday. Even adults can learn a few new things from some of these books! Here are just a few of those on display inside—come on in and check us out!

Thanksgiving at Our House, by P.K. Hallinan. Join P.K. and his family and friends as they do activities together and count their blessings. You can agree with P.K. as he declares, “I'm grateful for blessings/That just never end/But mostly I'm thankful.../For all of my friends.”

Thankful Together, by Holly Davis. Based on scripture verses (Psalm 30:12 and I Chronicles 16:34), children can learn that from morning to end of day at bedtime prayer, even an ordinary day is full of times to be thankful together, and to be able to say, “Thank you, God, for our wonderful day.”

The Pumpkin Patch Parable, by Liz Curtis Higgs. Here is a charming story that illustrates for children how a loving Farmer can turn a simple pumpkin into something wonderful, and that in the same way, God's love can fill our hearts with joy and light.

Thank You for This Food, by Debbie Trafton O'Neal. This delightful book is a collection of action prayers, songs, and thankful table graces to make giving thanks at mealtimes a joyful experience for children and the whole family.

Thanksgiving on Thursday, by Mary Pope Osborne. This book is #27 in the wonderful Magic Tree House series. Jack and Annie are whisked back to 1621 on the first Thanksgiving Day. The Pilgrims ask them to help get things ready, but they don't know how to do anything the Pilgrim way. In the story, they and the reader learn about Pilgrim life, work, food and customs.

Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving, by Eric Metaxas. This is the true story about the 12 year old boy who was captured in 1608 and taken to Spain as a slave. There, from Spanish monks, he learned about God. Some years later he made his way to England and then later back to his homeland. Here he found a small settlement of struggling Pilgrims in their new community called Plymouth, and as we know from American history, was able to help them survive.

Advent and Christmas follow right after Thanksgiving. COME ON IN and browse through the many selections (fiction and non-fiction) for children, youth and adults, soon to be on display!

Recent Reads Book Group

Come and share books, light refreshments and delightful

company.

Join us in Bunting Library for our next meeting: Monday, 11/10, 2-3pm

Experts at The Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children suggest that dental care before teeth appear can begin by running a damp cloth over the gums daily to clear harmful bacteria.

As the teeth come in, you may brush with just a smear of toothpaste and water and an infant toothbrush until about age 2, when children can begin to spit. They can use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste while under supervision of their parents.

Also, remember that it isn't a good idea to put your child to bed with a bottle. Sugars from the milk or juice remain on their teeth for hours and will eat away at the enamel, creating “bottle mouth”. This condition manifests as pocked, pitted, or discolored front teeth. Severe cases can become cavi-ties, leading to the need to pull the front teeth until the permanent ones grow in.

Routine check-ups with pediatric dentists can help with prevention and maintenance. The American Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit be at the age of 1 year.

CREATION CARE

God calls us to be stewards of God’s creation.

God spoke, “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature so they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, and, yes, Earth itself….”

—Genesis 1:28 (Eugene Peterson’s The Message)

As part of this call, we are each challenged to be cognizant of 1) the resources we use and for what purposes, 2) what it takes (and may take away from others) to acquire those resources in the first place, 3) and how to best minimize our personal carbon footprints on the one earth God has given us to tend.

Get involved—learn how you can

take action now!
