years with the BC Telephone Co. 22 years in Man-agement. My wife Bev and I have been married for 54 years we have 3 Grown Children, 7 Grandchil-dren, and 5 Great Grand Children. Bev and I love to Garden and Spend Quality Time with our family.

Why you should elect me: The new Council will, unlike any other Council in our History, be man-dated to direct our City on a path that is going to see unprecedented growth and economic activity from LNG, Site C, and escalated activity in Oil and Gas Resource Development.

Should all of these projects come to fruition I be-lieve we will have “One Kick at The Can” so to speak, to ready ourselves for the impending Boom so we better get it right. We will require a Council that can manage a Boom and not to fall into the trap of a Boom and Bust situation. We will require experi-enced and trained City staff, a hard working experi-enced Mayor and council to manage the opportuni-ties that will be coming our way, in other words we have to be “Open For Business”.

Folks I have that experience, I have the drive, de-termination, and common sense, to take on what will be handed us from both Industry and our Senior Governments. I want to be part of Mayor Bumstead’s Team and I need your help to put me there.

On the fi scal gap: I support the measures City Council have implemented ... to date they have nar-rowed the gap substantially, but much more work is required to completely close it.

On the energy boom: I am a supporter of Oil and Gas Development, it has done much for our local

economy, ie Fair Share. I would encourage my Council Colleagues to continue promoting Dawson Creek as a Oil and Gas Service Centre ... in other words message that “We Are Open For Business”

PAUL GEVATKOFFWho I am: I have previous ex-

perience as a Councillor in Daw-son Creek. I am confi dent with the experience I have gained; I can represent the people of Daw-son Creek effectively. My wife Sharon and I have been married for 43 years. We have two adult children who reside in the area and two delightful Granddaugh-ters. Fortunately for Sharon and me, with the vibrant local econ-omy, our children were able to secure employment and stay in the area.

Why you should elect me: I am running for a Council position in Dawson Creek. I have the time to commit. I have extensive experi-ence on Council. I have varied work experience. I am active as a volunteer. I am committed to work to improve the City. I do not have a personal agenda. My inter-est is totally focused on effective City policies and, in particular, effective fi nancial policies. Your Call 2014ness about our spending problem serious-ly. The so called fiscal gap has been build-ing for many years and must be addressed with firm financial policy. We need to ad-dress the issue that Dawson Creek has one of the highest per capita property tax rates in BC.

On the fiscal gap: The most important issue in our city at this time is a review of spending policies ... Cost effective and focused spending will result in a strong and confident community. High taxes will be addressed, infrastructure will be im-proved, businesses and residents will gain trust in the City.

On the energy boom: A focus on the basic responsibilities; policing, fire pro-tection, water, sewer, garbage, streets,

sidewalks, will help to ensure budget is available to accommodate growth. The City must also encourage investors and re-spect their needs.

THERESA GLADUEWho I am: I am from the Sturgeon

Lake Cree Nation but Dawson Creek is my home now. My wonderful husband stood by in my 2008 - 2011 City Council term and supports me in this campaign. I work at the Northern Lights College as the Ab-original Student Advisor and I volunteer for Peace FM.

Why you should elect me: My vision for council is to have a balanced and sustain-able growth plan for our community so we can have a larger tax base.

On the fiscal gap: Council needs to

able to diversify our revenues and estab-lish a long term plan with our taxpayers so we can work together to create satisfac-tory solutions that meet our needs (not our wants).

On the energy boom: I would propose that council pass a bylaw to impose a social tax to all the oil and gas companies operating in the boundaries of the municipality. These mon-ies would be given to community groups.

JOHANNA KUNZWho I am: I currently live in Rolla with

my 2 children, Mya and Anna, our 3 dogs, and 2 cats. I own and operate my consult-ing company, Myanna Consulting, and with all the work I have done over the years working for the betterment of the region I feel I have a lot to offer our com-munity.

Why you should elect me: Committed to Community, Dedicated to Progress! I am very passionate about life in Dawson Creek and I want to be involved in helping to build a future for our community.

As a mother raising 2 girls in this great community, I want Dawson Creek to be a place of opportunity and prosperity for all including my own daughters. One of the best ways to ensure this vision of a bright-er future is achieved is to get involved on the ground level in local governance.

I want to help shape Dawson Creek for our future generations and beyond. I be-lieve in creating and administrating a fea-

sible long-term plan based on the vision of the community members for the future of Dawson Creek. The continued economic growth of our community will need to be managed effectively to ensure that the fu-ture workforce can live and work and play in Dawson Creek.

Supporting local businesses and attract-ing new businesses to our community is a key priority, however, we also need a direc-tion and vision for our growth.

Upgrading outdated infrastructure and planning for the growth will allow us to better manage our financial responsibil-ity and control our development. It is not enough to just react to our current situa-tion; we also need to commit to long-term community planning to ensure that Daw-son Creek are not left behind in the eco-nomic boom of the region.

On the fiscal gap: Fiscal gap is a huge priority for the community ... this is not a matter of reducing services but prioritiz-ing our services and ensuring they are de-livered in the most effective and efficient ways.

On the energy boom: To ensure our com-munity is benefiting from this I support the Fair share and the NEBC Resource Mu-nicipalities Coalition. These 2 resources are working to ensure our communities and the region will benefit.

Tip of the WeekHow To Make Your Senior Pet More ComfortableHow To Make Your Senior Pet More ComfortableHow To Make Your Senior Pet More ComfortableHow To Make Your Senior Pet More ComfortableGive your pet a padded and possibly heated bed to help with achy joints. Make getting in and out of vehicles easier by carrying a foldable ramp with you that fi ts in the trunk. Stairs or ramps for the home can help them get up on the couch or bed and avoid having to jump down with sore limbs. A harness instead of a neck collar and raised dishes will help with stiffness and neck arthritis. If your pet is suffering from hearing loss try to teach them hand signals. If their vision is fading consider using baby gates to confi ne them to a safe place or keep them from falling down stairs. Mostly, give them lots of love and attention for the time that you have with them!

anywhere in my life. I have family here, I have grandkids here, and it’s been very good to me.

Why you should elect me: I’m in a position in my life where I have the time and resources to give something back to the com-munity. I like my job, I like the direction we’re going, I like the vision that Mayor Bumstead has set for us, and I’m really excited about the future.

On the fiscal gap: We’re taking the right approach, and we will be having a series of public forums to advise the citizenry as we move through the process.

On the energy boom: Right now we’re renegotiating Fair Share ... it’s important that we get it long term, and I’m confident that we will.

CHARLIE PARSLOWWho I am: I am married to

Mary, my wife of 48 years, with three surviving daughters, four son in laws and nine grandchildren. I attended the University of London in UK earning a B Sc. (Hon) degree and a teacher certificate. Later, I at-tended Western Washington Uni-versity earning a M.Ed. degree in administration.

After some years of teaching and being a secondary school principal I came to Dawson Creek to serve the South Peace as School Superintendent and CEO from 1981 to 2001.

Why you should elect me: The Corporation of the City of Daw-son Creek is a multimillion dol-lar operation. My experience on Council this past three years has reinforced my appreciation of the complexity and diversity of municipal services. I take pride in the reality that Dawson Creek is the best community in the re-gion.

Providing meaningful over-sight on behalf of the taxpayers requires hard work, commitment and experience. Believe me the

issues facing council are often complex and diverse. There is very little black and white when wrestling with major issues and competing interests. The citi-zens of the community have the responsibility of making wise choices at election time. I am willing to spend four years of my life helping to steer the ship so that it doesn’t hit any rocks and sails into smooth waters.

I have often felt that I was a small tugboat pushing against the side of the ship trying to nudge it to change course somewhat. With the support of other elected officials and staff I can see that the ship is adjusting its position to navigate the waters ahead.

The city is blessed with a com-mitted and skilled staff. I believe the city has the capacity to deal with the big issues of weaning itself off Fair Share funding for operating purposes, engaging in major infrastructure upgrades and in working with the commu-nity to address the fiscal gap.

The next four years will not be easy but we can be successful if we have the right blend in gover-nance and leadership.

It is often said that the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour. I hope my track record as school superintendent, community member and city councillor meets your require-ments for your vote in the up-coming election.

On the fiscal gap: The reality of the Fiscal Gap needs to be com-municated to the public in graph-ic and concrete terms. The com-plexities will have to broken down into bite size chunks. Unless the taxpayers buy into the need to ad-dress it no real change can occur.

On the energy boom: The city needs to enable the development of several more industrial parks by enhancing the capacity of the water

treatment plant and the water dis-tribution to these parks. Support for land developers ... in their applica-tion to have land taken out of the ALR is important as it leads to the improvement of the city’s tax base.

JUSTIN PYLATUKWhy you should elect me: I’m

running for city council to bring in more disabled housing and bring in some more low-income housing. Not everybody can af-ford to pay for rent here. Some people have to work four jobs to pay rent in Dawson Creek. That’s why I’m running, to bring down the rent for low-income people. Not everybody works on the rigs.

On the fiscal gap: (Pylatuk said he did not know enough to answer the question.)

On the energy boom: (Pylatuk said he did not know enough to answer the question.)

MARK ROGERSWho I am: I am Mark Rogers,

candidate for Dawson Creek City Council. I am a recently retired plumber, gas fitter and business owner.

I ran a very successful business in Dawson Creek for many years, and I have experience managing multi-million dollar construction projects in Canada and interna-tionally.

I enjoy outdoor activities in the beautiful South Peace such as; boating, fishing, quadding and gardening.

I played rugby in BC and in-ternationally and I have also coached rugby. I have been mar-ried to Louise for over 30 years and we are the proud parents of three young adults.

Why you should elect me: I will be a good fit for City Council. I am a recently retired, long-time resident, with good business sense and the time, energy, and experience to serve my commu-nity well. I am not afraid to ask

Your Call 2014the tough questions and make tough choices.

People who know me well, know that I am plain talking and willing to address any issue. I listen and I tell it like it is.

I will do my due diligence and research to gain a full under-standing of the issues and vote responsibly in the best interests of Dawson Creek.

To start my term on Council, I have three major priorities:

1 – Council has spent more than a year discussing the fiscal gap. We need to get to work on the problem right now. 2 - City Council should take a leadership role and be more assertive in our pursuit of an adequate portion of Fair Share funding, and a guarantee that it continues. 3 – By addressing these two issues we will have the funds we need to improve our infrastruc-ture to support our rapid growth.

On the fiscal gap: We need to do more than say it is a priority, we must get to work on it right away. Council and staff have to identify efficiencies. Not short term dam-aging cuts but better ways of do-ing business.

On the energy boom: 1 - De-velop good relationships with the industry but, more importantly, work to ensure Dawson Creek is

not a one industry town. 2- Work with all industries and businesses to encourage their employees to live and invest in our communi-ty. 3 – Continue to lobby for Fair Share.

CHERYL SHUMANWho I am: I am a 46 year old

mother to three young adults. Clint and I married in 1995 and we have lived in the same house in Dawson Creek for over 20 years. I have always worked as a caregiver. Caring for our seniors with Northern Health since I was 20yrs old and operating a daycare at home when my children were preschoolers. I am very active in the community, I enjoy many rec-reation activities and I am a proud supporter of arts and community groups. I volunteer for and sit on many committees and boards in Dawson Creek and BC.

Why you should elect me: I was raised to work hard and to stand up for what I believe in. I am the right person for the job of City Councillor because I really do believe in Dawson Creek and I will work hard over the next four years to make our City the best it can be for our families now and into the future! My great grand-father was our first settler and small business owner when he

moved his family to the Pouce Coupe Prairie and opened a Trading Post in the late 1800’s. I have deep roots here and I care about this place and the gen-erations to come.

I have worked hard during the past six years on council. I represent the community with a positive attitude locally, regionally and provincially to make sure that we can continue to work, raise our fami-lies and retire in our community. I have the time and the energy to do this important work as along with my family responsibilities, City Council and community works are my priority. I have an excel-lent participation record at Council and council related meetings and I bring an informed and co-operative voice to the table. I care about ensuring our quality of life, providing good service and being fiscally responsible. I will engage you, listen to your

concerns, make careful considerations and com-municate with you at every opportunity.

There will be challenges that come with the op-portunities for our community in the future and the one promise I will make during this campaign is that I will always have your quality of life here in Dawson Creek as my top priority.

On the fiscal gap: [It] is not as much about re-duced spending and reduction of services as it is about balancing the expectations of our citizens and our infrastructure/operational needs within our fi-nancial capacity in a sustainable way. There is work to be done on this front.

On the energy boom: It is important that we con-tinue to uphold the quality of life for our citizens. Future residents and business owners as well as investors will be inspired to choose Dawson Creek

Your Call 2014over other communities due to our excep-tional services and amenities.

ARLEENE THORPE Who I am: Dawson Creek is home. It is

where I have raised my children and now have the joy of seeing my grandchildren grow up. I have had many careers in this city – the most recent working at Better at Home Program for the betterment of Senior’s liv-ing in our community. I own my own home and have lived in Dawson Creek for the past 45 years. I volunteer with the Legion, Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, South Peace MLA Advisory Committee and Kiwanis. I’ve dedicated my life to helping others and I now see being on City Council as another opportunity to do that. Better our community for business and the people who also call this great place, home.

Why you should elect me: A 360 degree view is needed in order to build on the good work going on in our city and to move it forward.

Sometimes the tough questions need to be asked and answered and I am not afraid to look at an issue from all sides before forming an opinion. How does an issue affect local business, local residents, industry, and any outside interests? Can a win-win solution be found?

Challenges have solutions and not ex-cuses. I believe in going the extra mile to fi nd a solution. An answer that doesn’t have an agenda behind it but is what I see is good for

our city. Working with the Mayor and Coun-cil, I believe we can do this just that for Daw-son Creek. Find solutions.

Dawson Creek is a great place to live, work and do business and I value the op-portunity to be a part of a council that wants to take things to the next level!

Council is a collaborative process, and I enjoy being part of a group that acts in your best interest and hears your concerns.

With growth comes change, a prospect both exciting and at times unnerving, but I truly believe that this City has afforded us all the opportunity to steer change in a di-rection that will make Dawson Creek the template for how a City should evolve. I be-lieve we can be the big small town and the small big city, and still retain our identity as a close knit community that welcomes and embraces all.

On the fi scal gap: Spending cannot con-tinue at the levels it is and no one wants to pay more taxes. So it is time to prioritize. What is the need-to-have’s in a commu-nity? Then let’s move to the nice-to-have’s once the fi rst category is fulfi lled budget wise.

On the energy boom: Enhancing part-nerships already developed and bringing new partners on board would ensure ev-eryone is a part of the ‘boom.’ Looking at new regulations that would protect local business interest while allowing growth of industry would be key.

You’ve just run out of reasons to rent! This great 2 bedroom home would be an ideal starter. Centrally located on a quiet street with a landscaped yard full of trees, shrubs & fl owers and a good storage shed in the fenced back yard. Generous Open Kitchen

WIDTH: 35’ - 0” DEPTH: 40’ - 0” ©Copyright SELECT HOME DESIGNS

Here’s a comfortable, open plan that would be great on a sloping lot. On the main level, the kitchen’s large island will be the center of activity, with seating for four and access to both the living and dining areas. It’s easy to reach the master bedroom, which sits near a large bathroom that boasts both a generous shower and tub. Upstairs, two more bedrooms (one of them quite spacious) have use of a full hall bath that includes a big shower. An unfinished basement gives you room to expand later.

To see more details on this plan, visit www.eplans.com and enter the plan number above. Use advanced search features to browse thousands of other home designs, including bungalow, two-storey, multi-level, and cottage country homes. Order blueprints online or call 1-800-528-8070 for more information on how to order and modify plans.

SHAELY WILBURWho I am: I am blessed with a wonder-

ful spouse and family who support me, Mother to 5 and “Nana” to 6. Councillor for 1 term and I represent you and the north as a Director on the North Central Govern-ment Leadership Association. A volunteer too many organizations and true believer that it takes a community working togeth-er to achieve success.

Why you should elect me: Believing that the only conversations should be inclusive ones, I have been on City Council for the last three years and have often been known as the lone voice on different issues. Be-cause of this, everyone has not been happy but I believe every voice counts and should be represented.

I would be honored to represent you again for another term on council and I will continue to listen, engage in all con-versations brought to me and continue to work as hard as possible for the best inter-ests of our community.

Seeing that Dawson Creek has a bright future and as we grow, I will strive to keep our city at the top of its game while main-taining the charm that only Dawson Creek has.

On the fiscal gap: How do we main-tain the quality of life so many enjoy while staying within our means? Well ... your newly elected council are going to start the conversation.

On the energy boom: We are not ap-proaching a ‘Boom’ from the Oil and Gas industry; we have been living in it for many years now ... Most recently I have had conver-sations with different organizations around affordable housing and how the gap in this area is widening. All aspects must be ad-dressed to ensure that we are heard by higher levels of Government.

KEVIN ZARIFEHWho I am: I moved to Dawson Creek in

2006. I grew up in the metropolis of Van-couver, and love the space and stillness one can still find in the North.

I’ve been happily married to my best friend, Roanna, for 17 years and counting. We have two senior dogs who remind me

every day how simple and beautiful a walk in a field can be. I work with at-risk kids, have the best friends a man could want, and think that right here in Dawson Creek I’m the luckiest I’ve ever been.

Why you should elect me: I believe this City has untapped potential, that our ranking among best and most livable cit-ies in Canada is the tip of the iceberg of what we can achieve.

We can be a City where kids have free or low-cost recreational options, where both those that work in oil and gas and those that work elsewhere can build a future, raise families, and see their kids do the same. Where our College is lauded for both its trades and academic successes.

What do I bring? Well, I’m not running for Emperor, so with that I bring a com-mitment to living here, a genuine love of people, an ability to get along with those of a dissenting view, and the personal-ity requisite in working with a team to achieve success for all. Council is a collab-orative process, and I enjoy being part of a group that acts in your best interest and hears your concerns.

With growth comes change, a prospect both exciting and at times unnerving, but I truly believe that this City has afforded us all the opportunity to steer change in a direction that will make Dawson Creek the template for how a City should evolve. I believe we can be the big small town AND the small big city, and still retain our identity as a close knit community that welcomes and embraces all.

On the fiscal gap: Spending ... needs to be effectively communicated as some-thing that protects services, not endan-gers them. There is no black or white to sound financial management.

On the energy boom: Invest the eco-nomic benefits into infrastructure that en-sures we are a viable place to live when the boom times taper. This City needs to be one whereby every member of a family has things to do, places to go, a reason to call DC home beyond a transient attachment to income opportunities. Dubai gets it.

Gerald Herbert Loach, better known to us all as Joe, was bornJanuary 26, 1930 in Lennoxville, Quebec, and grew up with four siblings Virginia, Grace, Len and Pat.

In 1949, Joe married the love of his life and his best friend,Mary Dorothy Irene Crandall, better known as Dotty. Dotty predeceased Joe in 1997. In the late 1950’s, Joe and Dot headed west and settled in Dawson Creek in the early 1960’s.They purchased a house on 95th Avenue where they raised their 6 children Stan, Linda, Cathy, Kelly, Dick and Fred. Joe passed away on October 24, 2014. The family will always be grateful for those who assisted Joe over the past few years with their friendship and help. He will be missed by all.

A funeral service was held on October 30, 2014 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Interment followed in the Brookside Cemetery.

For those that wish to make a donation in memory of Joe, Step Up and Ride inDawson Creek has been a very helpful service for Joe and the local community by providing much needed transportation.

The family wishes to express their gratitude and sincere thanks to everyone for your many acts of kindness, comfort, cards, fl owers and food provided to us in our time of bereavement.

Jeffrey William Borodula, age 33 years was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on June 10, 1981. He was adopted at the age of

2 years and 9 months by his parents Walt and Colleen Borodula of Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Jeff spent his teenage years in

Vernon, British Columbia, and graduated from Kalamalka Secondary School. Although Jeff has been living in Lethbridge, Alberta for many years, he was planning to move to Medicine Hat, Alberta to live with the love of his life Brittney Banks, and her daughter Natalie. As well as his parents, Jeff is survived by his sister Emily Borodula of Red Deer, her three sons Darrien, Tristyn, and Madden, and his grandmother Shirley Conner of Vancouver. Jeff is also survived by a son from a brief relationship named Aiden. He was not able to see Aiden but always held a special spot in his heart for him. Jeffrey leaves numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss him dearly.

Jeff worked for most of his adult life in the hospitality industry where he made many good friends. In September he started working as a pipeline labourer near Dawson Creek. He missed “his girls” in Medicine Hat, but was working hard to start a new life for them. Jeff had a very sunny personality, and a wonderful sense of humour. Many people have commented on his magical laughter. We were all very fortunate to be a part of Jeff’s all too short journey in life.Cremation will take place in Dawson Creek. There will be a Celebration of Life for Jeffrey on his birthday June 10, 2015 in Kelowna, British Columbia. His urn will be interred in Kelowna near his grandparents Frank and Irene Searle, formerly of Dawson Creek, British Columbia.

Donations may be made in lieu of fl owers to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1000 – 105th Ave, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, V1G 2B9 or the South Peace SPCA, 637 – 114th Ave, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, V1G 3A1.Funeral arrangements entrusted to Bergeron Funeral Services & Crematorium.

Mrs. Viola Benson of Dawson Creek, British Columbia passed away peacefully on October 31, 2014 at the age of 95.

Vi was born in the Beaverlodge area on September 10, 1919 to Lulu (Sherk) and Charles Edgerton, both early pioneers in the Peace Country. Vi took her schooling at the old log school at Lower Beaverlodge. She attended high school in Beaverlodge and then Normal School in Edmonton, graduating as a teacher. She fi rst taught in a country school in the Red Deer area where she met and married her husband Mel Benson. She continued to teach until the family moved to Calgary where her son Garry was born. In 1952, Mel bought Lux Cleaners and they moved toDawson Creek. In 1955, their family increased when a baby girl, Deborah, was born.A year later, Vi returned to her beloved career teaching elementary school. How happy she was to be back with “her kids”. In the mid 1960’s, and for the next 20 years, Vi and her class entered festivals in choral speech and drama, winning many trophies.

Throughout these years Vi enjoyed many exciting changes in her own family too! Garry and Deborah moved away to pursue opportunities, giving Vi and Mel an excuse to travel around the country to visit them. Their families grew, fi rst with Garry’s sons Brian and Greg, and then Deborah’s son, Travis. After retirement in 1984, Vi continued to substitute teach and tutor students for the next 20 years. In addition, her festival work continued as an adjudicator across the province. She also volunteered at theUnited Church, Walter Wright Museum, and Dawson Creek Hospital.

In 1997 she was saddened by the death of her husband Mel. Some years later she was very fortunate to meet Garry Halldorson, who would become an important personin her life.

Other great additions were happening to her family too! She and Garry saw her family expand with Greg’s marriage to Michelle, and the addition of 4 great grandchildren. Since then Travis has married Sonya and great grand-daughter Amelia was born in 2011.

Since Garry’s passing, Vi has been very well looked after at Peace River Haven, where she celebrated her 90th birthday with her family and friends in 2009, and most recently in Rotary Manor where she continued to look forward to their visits.

Vi is survived by her son Garry (Lynn) of Calgary, daughter Deborah of Vernon, 3 grandsons: Brian, Greg (Michelle), and Travis (Sonya) all of Calgary,5 great-grandchildren: Ethan, Cole, Ella, Cameron, and Amelia, and a sister Dorothyof Beaverlodge.

A Memorial service was held Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm at South Peace United Church, Dawson Creek, offi ciated by Rev. Marilyn Carroll. Interment followed in Brookside Cemetery, Dawson Creek.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, #300 - 828 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, British Columbia, V5Z 1E2.Funeral arrangements entrusted to Bergeron Funeral Services & Crematorium.
