OLDP Bulletin Article – November 10th

Southwest Airlines had a TV add that always ended with “Wanna get away?”. It had to do with someone being put on the spot provoking an unexpected reaction to an unexpected situation. At some point in our lives we’ve been asked a question just to test how we’d react or respond and at times we wish we could just get away! In today’s Gospel regarding Man’s Resurrection, Jesus has been put on the spot with the in-tent to test him, to see how he would react. It is the Sadducees’ turn now to test Jesus. The good thing about these encounters is that by now Jesus is used to facing those who constantly want to

challenge him, to test him, to entrap him. And we all know that Jesus just won’t wanna get away! That’s not the Jesus we know. It is this silly game that the Sadducees play with Jesus, proposing him an imaginary situation which was most unlikely ever to occur. The question was, which of the seven widow’s husbands (they were all brothers) she would marry on the day of the Resurrection?! They were hoping to trap Jesus into somehow saying that there is no Resur-rection. The Sadducees themselves did not believe in the Resurrection. Jesus’ response: “The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the Resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage”. There is a fundamental difference between our earthly bodies and our bodies in the next life and the best way to think about our heavenly bodies is that we will all be like “like angels, human beings but in spiritual bodies”. In Jesus’ own Resurrection peo-ple did not recognize him; Mary Magdalene thought He was the gardener; the two disciples on their way to Em-maus didn’t recognize Him until He broke bread. Not only did Jesus look different, but He could, also, go through walls and doors!! So, husbands and wives, keep calm, we won’t have to wanna get away when we see each other at the Resur-rection of the dead since we will all be like angels, human beings but in spiritual bodies, and will not marry or be given in marriage to one another – provided we are worthy to attain such grace.

God blessings to you all! Deacon Roberto Garcia

Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

CHILDREN OF THE RESURRECTION

The possibility or certitude of life after the death of our earthly bodies has fascinated religions throughout the world and across the centuries. It certainly is the top-ic uppermost on the minds of the Sadducees today. They did not believe in a life after this life or a world where angels or other bodiless spirits dwelled. This constricted their ability, then, to imagine such a world or such a life, and made them imagine or construct it according to the life they knew as mortal creatures. Indeed, such a ten-dency can be seen—even among Christians—today, when we speak of being rejoined or reunited with the faithful departed in a continued, if improved, version of the relationship we had with them. But God is a living God, Jesus points out, and those who believe in this God are made children of the resurrection to life everlasting. This is important, as today’s Gospel dispute concludes Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem to face his ultimate confron-tation, culminating in his resurrection. His forthrightness foretells what the apostle Paul will write to the Thessalo-nians: “[T]he Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:3).

EQUAL IN DIGNITY TO THE ANGELS Television, greeting cards, and some church or-namentation have done a disservice to the biblical notion of angels. Popular imagination perceives them as gentle, safe, and fluffy. Their job description is cast mostly in human, egocentric terms: to keep danger from us, to console us, to restore a sense of wonder or the miracu-lous to our narrow-mindedness. Some of this has its ba-sis in the biblical traditions. But, above all else, the bibli-cal angels were direct messengers of God. Their voice was God’s voice, their presence was the presence of the celestial throne of the Almighty. People were often star-tled or outright scared at their arrival, and had to be told not to fear; their messages were often difficult to hear, leading mortals into thorny situations. The children of the Resurrection—all of us, born of the living God—are equal in dignity to these angels. But in Christ we already have the power of resurrected life to be strong herald messengers of God. This is the call of all Christian disci-ples. For this, Paul tells us, we are made strong in God who is not only a living God, but a faithful and loving God as well. Through God we will be given the endurance in Christ necessary to live out the vocation of our bap-tism. Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING FOR OUR MINISTRY VOLUNTEERS

Heavenly Father, we thank You for our ministry volunteers. Thank You, God, for guiding their feet into the way of peace. Thank You, Lord, for the volunteers who are committed and dedicated to the Kingdom work You are manifesting through our church. Father, Your majestic Name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. You have taught children and infants to tell of Your strength, silencing Your en-emies and all who oppose You. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne. Lord, You are such a faithful God. You are our rock, our deliverer, in whom we trust. You are worthy to be praised. Righteous Father, let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven through our ministry volunteers. We declare that our volunteers understand the roles they play in manifesting Your plans for the Kingdom. They have the mind of Christ, and they hold the thoughts and purposes of His heart. They hold fast to the profession of their faith without wavering; for You are faithful in fulfilling Your promises. Their minds will stay on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report. They are doers of the Word and not hearers only. Every volunteer works as if You are their direct super-visor. Because of their service to Your Kingdom, their needs are consistently met according to Your rich-es in glory in Christ Jesus. Lord, we decree that they serve in humility, harmony and unity with others on their team. They each serve with a spirit of excellence and a garment of praise.
