Rally held for A� ordable Care Act

M ina Schulz considers herself fortunate.

Though she lived for a time without health insurance, she received coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Soon afterwards, she learned after a routine physical that she had a tumor in her right femur.

“The kind of cancer that I had is serious and aggressive. Once it’s progressed, there’s not much that can be done,” said Schulz. However, an MRI was able to catch the cancer early enough that she was able to get treatment and is now cancer free.

“Without that MRI, and without the Affordable Care Act (ACA), I don’t think I would be standing here today,” Schulz said at a rally held at Harlem Hospital on November 1.

At the event, advocates and city health offi cials assembled to promote the open enrollment period for the ACA, which began that day, through the city’s Get Covered NYC outreach program, a year-round effort to enroll New Yorkers in health insurance.

While the Trump administration shortened the open enrollment period to six weeks for most states, New York’s enrollment period lasts for three months.

The deadline for New Yorkers to enroll in coverage is January 31, 2018.

“We want all New Yorkers to know that health insurance through the Affordable Care Act is still available. I urge all New Yorkers who are eligible to get covered through the marketplace or renew their health insurance today,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett.

Regina Schwartz, Director of the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit, said Get Covered NYC would expand its outreach through multimedia ads, neighborhood canvassing and phone calls.

“We’re partnering with dozens of elected offi cials and community-based organizations, and we’ve got daily events through the end of open enrollment, in communities throughout the city,” she said. “We’ll be on the ground

and going door to door.”Through Get Covered NYC, city residents

can get free, one-on-one guidance through the enrollment process by calling 311 or texting CoveredNYC or SeguroNYC to 877877. Assistance is available in 17 languages.

“Where needs are greatest”

ArchCare, the healthcare ministry of the Archdiocese

of New York, raised a record $1.5 million for seniors and those with special needs at its annual gala.

More than 500 people attended the Nov. 3rd event at Gotham Hall, which featured a performance by award-winning writer and comedian Jim Gaffi gan.

ArchCare President and CEO Scott LaRue said that funds raised would support a variety of ArchCare programs focused on closing gaps in care. Among those were:• Expanding ArchCare’s Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), which currently allows some 700 seniors, many with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to live in their own homes or with family members.

• Providing free care, physical therapy, social work and other services for families with extraordinary needs, such as the Camacho family of conjoined twin girls from the Dominican Republic who underwent successful separation surgery earlier this year.

Joseph P. Anderson, a former member of ArchCare’s board of trustees, received the Florence Eisenberg Board Service Award for his work as a former member of ArchCare’s board of trustees.

LaRue spotlighted Anderson’s role in helping to guide the healthcare system through a transformation that has signifi cantly extended its reach and array of services in an environment of ever-

On October 29, 2012 Hurricane Sandy walloped the East Coast and unleashed extensive damage on New York and New Jersey. Some parts of these 2 states are still reeling, 5 years later, from the storm. Daniel McDermott of the NY Times penned an excellent piece on Kahlil Joseph’s latest fi lm, Fly Paper, which is part of his exhibit, Kahlil Joseph: Shadow Play at the New Museum (235 Bowery) until January, 7, 2018. For the latest episode of Uptown Hustle, Harlem tech maverick John Henry takes part in the NY Latino Film Festival’s Futuro Conference and drops some serious gems. Esha Ray and Denis Slattery of the NY Daily News reported on the fi fth annual clothing drive at the First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem.

The other day I was fi ending for a Cuban Sandwich, not just any Cuban Sandwich but Uptown’s best Cuban Sandwich. So I was stunned when I stopped by Floridita (4162 Broadway) and saw that it was closed. No, say it ain’t so. I almost cried. Okay, maybe I did. Just a little. Anyway, after I dried the tears I found out that Floridita is actually expanding and will

New legislation intended to give minority hairdressers a greater voice in the professional standards of their industry has been signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The Hairdressing Diversity Law will ensure that training curriculums for a state cosmetology license refl ect ethnic and cultural practices, and will create an advisory committee to establish new standards for licensing.

“Now, they have to appoint someone to the committee with expertise in dealing with ethnic hair,” said State Senator Marisol Alcántara, who sponsored the bill. She said the law will require cosmetology training to be inclusive of different hair types, including Latina, African-American, and Asian hair.

“This is an opportunity to give salon workers a voice in whatever curriculum the state sets,” Alcántara said.

“This legislation is very important because we have such a high population of immigrant and Latina women in the beauty industry,” Quenia Abreu, President of the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce (NYWCC). “Not only Latina women, but also Asian women are very prominent in the industry. These people need to be represented, and that’s what New York City is all about.”

Alcántara explained the new law during a ceremony for graduates of NYWCC’s cosmetology program. At the event, held on November 1 at the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, 19 participants were

It’s a tale of two terms for Bill de Blasio.

After winning City Hall four years ago with a promise to reduce the gap between rich and poor in New York City, de Blasio cruised to re-election on Tuesday night.

De Blasio was announced the winner by local newscasts before 9:30 p.m., after early poll results showed him garnering over 61 percent of the vote with more than half of precincts reporting.

He becomes the fi rst Democratic incumbent since Mayor Ed Koch to win re-election – and he said it was just the start of a new era.

“It’s a good night for progressives,” said de Blasio in his remarks. “For the fi rst time in 32 years, a Democratic mayor was re-elected in New York City. Let’s promise each other, this is the beginning of a new era of progressive Democratic leadership in New York City for years and years to come.”

De Blasio’s main challenger, Republican Nicole Malliotakis, conceded before 10 p.m. after earning about 29 percent of votes.

Malliotakis, a State Assemblymember from Staten Island, thanked supporters for backing her against an incumbent mayor.

“I entered this race knowing that the odds were stacked against me,” said Malliotakis.

“We may not have won this race, but we have made our voices heard, and we will continue to

In the days since a terrorist killed eight people and injured 11

others by driving a truck through the West Side Highway bicycle path, New York City has attempted to return to normalcy.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on October 31, 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov is alleged to have driven a rental truck onto the bicycle path, striking a number of pedestrians and bicyclists along the route.

The truck collided with a school bus at Chambers Street, injuring two adults and two children, police said. Saipov then exited the vehicle, when he was confronted and shot by NYPD offi cer Brian Nash.

John Miller, NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Counterterrorism, said Saipov had likely plotted the attack for several weeks and carried it out “in the name of ISIS.”

“He appears to have followed, almost exactly to a T, the instructions that ISIS has put out in its social media channels before, with instructions to their followers on how to carry out such an attack,” Miller said.

Six of those killed were visiting New York City from other countries, including

fi ve tourists from Argentina and one from Belgium.

The day after the incident, the bike path and southbound traffi c lane of the West Side Highway were closed to traffi c between Houston and Murray Streets, as an army of police offi cers surrounded the area. At Murray Street, curious onlookers paused in attempt to get a glimpse of the scene.

“It makes you feel helpless,” remarked Priscilla, a former teacher at Borough of Manhattan Community College. “It shows these attacks can happen anytime, anywhere.”

A group of students from nearby Stuyvesant High School, which went into lockdown as the attack unfolded, said their school day had gone on as normal the following day, though they noted that some students were absent.

“They had grief counselors there to help if anyone wanted to talk to one,” said student Daniel.

Stuyvesant classmates Yusha and Tausif, both Muslim, expressed concern about an anti-Islamic backlash in the wake of the attack.

“Our religion is all about peace and safety,” said Yusha. “It doesn’t have anything to do with violence.”

They noted that eyewitnesses reported that Saipov had exclaimed “Allahu Akbar,” an Islamic phrase meaning “God is great,” after exiting the attack vehicle.

“That phrase is meant for good, but it gets misinterpreted,” Yusha said.

After the Attack

On October 31, President Donald Trump tweeted, “I have just ordered Homeland Security to step up our already Extreme Vetting Program. Being politically correct is fi ne, but not for this!”

“I feel like this guy who attacked is going to cast all of us in a negative light,” said Yusha.

Saipov, a permanent resident of the United States, came into the country on a diversity visa from Uzbekistan in March 2010. He was recently living in New Jersey and driving for Uber.

Here are some tips to reduce your carbon footprint, wherever you plan

to go. Whether it be reducing your consumption while on vacation, or saving greenhouse gas emissions by taking non-stop fl ights or train rides, what follows is a bit of advice to make your holidays greener.

When traveling, it is important to pay attention to the transportation

method you are using. Try avoiding using a single-occupancy vehicle and short-distance fl ying. Rather, take advantage of trains, buses, and carpools. The Sightline Institute (www.sightline.org) has prepared data showing the difference in emissions per travel method. For example, taking the train releases approximately one-fourth the emissions per rider compared to a single-occupancy vehicle.

If you are fl ying, do your best to avoid layovers. Reducing the amount of times you take-off and land will require less fuel resources per person, leading to a cut in your overall emissions.

Combined with your transportation option, pack light. Decreasing the

weight of your suitcase or luggage will lower the amount of fuel needed to carry the extra weight.

If you are set on driving, or are required to in order to reach your destination, there are a few tips to consider before you hit the road. Remember to perform regular vehicle maintenance to keep your car running in tip-top shape. Doing so reduces emissions and increases your fuel economy, and overall vehicle effi ciency. Regular maintenance includes simple tasks such as properly infl ating your tires, changing your air fi lter, and changing your oil. Be sure to pay attention to when you will be traveling, and aim to avoid peak travel

times. Not only is traffi c frustrating, but idling produces high levels of emissions and wastes fuel.

Once you have made it to your destination via car, non-stop fl ight, or train ride, consider fi nding a hotel with a LEED certifi cation and ask if the hotel has a recycling program and locally sourced foods and items.

The evening of the attack, the city’s Halloween parade went on as scheduled, with enhanced security. Governor Andrew Cuomo said the parade served as an example that the attack failed to terrorize New Yorkers, as around a million people attended the celebration.

“They were there just a number of hours after the incident, and it was New York’s way of saying, we will not be deterred. We are not terrorized. You will not win,” Cuomo said at a press conference.

On Mon., Nov. 6, Mayor Bill de Blasio attended a tribute for attack victims, where he was joined by President Mauricio Macri of Argentina and First Lady Juliana Awada.

Referencing the Argentine attack victims and the participation of 125 different countries in the New York City Marathon, de Blasio said the city is a place “where every faith, every nationality, people of every walk of life” can come together.

“And that is the very thing the terrorists want to undermine – a place where everyone can respect each other, where all faiths are treated with equality is an affront to the terrorist ideology,” de Blasio said. “It’s even more important that we affi rm our faith in each other and our commitment to continuing to be a place for everyone.”

Some visitors near the West Side Highway bike path have left fl owers in memory of the attack victims. A man and woman, visiting New York City from Belgium, stopped by the scene last Wednesday to refl ect on those killed.

“We came to pray for them,” the man said.A Manhattan resident named Erik was one

of the few cyclists riding on the bike path the day following the attack. He explained that he biked daily from his midtown apartment to his job in Lower Manhattan, and said he was on the path about a hour before the attack occurred.

“It makes you feel vulnerable, but at the same time, life has to go on,” he said, adding that he would continue to use the bike path. “What happened is scary, but you can’t let fear change you.”

When a student in emotional distress in a New York City

public school is black, police are much more likely to be involved, according to a new report.

The group Advocates for Children of New York says police are intervening in incidents that should be handled by clinically trained mental health professionals.

The report focuses on incidents in which students were sent to a psychiatric hospital for observation – and it found that, in one year, 95 percent of more than 2,700 interventions by police involved children

“And it’s not limited to the students that are directly harmed, but also their classmates who observe the student can also be traumatized,” she notes. “And not surprisingly, the school climate can suffer as well.”
