Summary : Chapter 9Summary : Chapter 9 Dawan is very tired and upset after seeing the head monk. Bao takes her to the

stall.

Bao advices Dawan not to give in to her brother and encourages her to be freeand achieve her dream.

Bao wants Dawan to free a caged sparrow, so she opens the cage door. At first,the timid sparrow hesitates but then it flies away. Dawan realises she has to be brave like the bird to be free.

Bao's brother, Vichai, comes and sees four empty birdcages but she has only

seventyfive cents in the bo!. "e argues with her because she did not collectmoney from some of the customers who set the birds free. #hen he slaps and hitsher. $wai runs and stops him. %ater, Vichai walks away.

Bao chides $wai for being a bully and for trying to grab Dawan's chance of goingto the &ity school. "e gets angry and wants to strike her but Dawan stops him.

$wai pushes Dawan and she falls on the broken birdcages. A piecec of sharp

splintered wood cuts through her left ankle and it bleeds. Dawan screams at her brother for bullying her and trying to snatch her only

chance to study.

At that moment, oi comes. (he cleans Dawan's cut and bandages it.

oi advices Dawan that it is useless to stand in men's way or to fight with them.

)t begins to rain and Dawan limps home with Bao's umbrella.

Dawan limps in the heavy rain to the river and sees her brother on the bridge. (he worries that he may catch a cold and he is concerned about the

cut on her ankle.

$wai is unhappy that his sister had called him a bully and said that his idealshad gone sour. "e also realises that he is wrong to try to snatch her chanceto study.

$wai asks Dawan what he should do but she advises him to think it out for

himself. (he wants him to go home but he is determined to think and decideon the bridge.

Dawan thrusts her umbrella into his hand but he does not notice it. *hen herealises it, she is already limping home into the rain.

$wai wants Dawan to take back her umbrella but she shouts that he needs it

more. #hen $wai reflects how badly he had hurt his sister but she was still

concerned about him to give him her umbrella and hobble home in the rain.

#he umbrella helps him decide what he has to do and he runs after his sister.

$wai tells Dawan that he has made the important decision and sheknows that he will not take away her chance to study at the &ity school.

(uddenly $wai and Dawan see their father with buffalo. #hey let himpass and then walk +uickly to catch up with him.

$wai wants to lead the buffalo home. But his father is angry that he didnot tell him he placed second in the e!amination.

*hen $wai and Dawan reach home, they see their father upstairs.

$wai persuades his father to let Dawan go. "e e!plains that he will notgo because it is not his roght. "e also tells his father that he has no rightto forbid Dawan and if he still forbids her, #akchit, the third best student

will go.

Dawan's father says that Dawan cannot go as she is only a girl and shecannot do anything with more education.

Dawan wants her father to be fair to her and not ot misuse his power toforbid her. (he persuades him to give her a chance to learn new thingsand believe that she can help people in their village and perhaps hercountry.

ventually, Dawan' father relents and lets her go. (he is happy that shecan study in the &ity but $wai is very upset.

Dawan goes to the river to watch the sunrise for the last time beforeleaving in an hour. "er brother is already there.

$wai is unhappy that he has no chance to go and his dreams arecrushed. "e still points out that more education for Dawan is wasted

because she -ust end up being a housewife. Dawan wants her brother to understand that she is scared to go to the

&ity and not to make things difficult for her. Dawan wants $wai to feel happy that she has a chance to fulfill their

dreams. (he promises to make things better for everyone. $wai is upset that he will be lonely when Dawan goes away and that

things will be not be the same between them when she comes back. Dawan tells $wai that she will miss everything and everyone in the

village. (he wants him to watvh the dawn as they usually do and singher morning song for her.

$wai +uickly runs away because he does not want his sister to see himcrying. #hen Dawan goes home.

All the villagers gather around Dawan's house to bid her farewell.

Dawan goes upstairs to change her clothes. "er grandmotheradvises her to face the world and accept changes bravely.

Dawan is sad to leave and she cries. "er grandmother gives her alotus bud and says that she will unfold or change like the lotus

bud when it unfolds and shrinks.

Dawan's father comes back annoyed after looking for her. (heasks him about $wai and he tells her that he will not to come tosay goodbye to her. (he is very disappointed.

#hen Dawan boards the bus with her lotus-ar. (he learns out of

the window to see the bridge. Dawan hears her brother singing and waving goodbye to her.

Dawan also flings out her arms to hug her brother and singsalong.

Dawan then looks at her lotus bud and notices that a few unfolded

in the sunshine.
