World-class infrastructure

• A network of acknowledged centres of excellence underpins our capabilities in this field:

9 ASTeC – our Accelerator Science and Technology Centre – focuses on every key aspect of accelerator development

9 The Cockcroft Institute and John Adams Institute, both STFC-funded, provide outstanding facilities for R&D in advanced accelerator science and technology

• A relentless R&D programme is also undertaken at the Diamond Light Source, the ISIS neutron facility and world-leading accelerators at CERN.

• We have a range of accelerator test facilities, including VELA (Versatile Electron Linear Accelerator), specifically designed to boost development of advanced accelerator systems.

Cutting-edge skills

• We specialise in understanding and overcoming the radical challenges involved in devising novel accelerators for industrial and academic use.

• Key areas of technical expertise include:

9 Vacuum technology - specialising in Ultra-High and Extreme High Vacuum (UHV and EHV) systems

9 Vacuum metrology and calibration service

9 Novel coatings for challenges including corrosion resistance, hardness, wear, catalytic performance, optical, electrical and magnetic properties

9 Surface analysis - expertise in a range of techniques that provide crucial information on materials at the fundamental level

9 Radio frequency (RF) systems - optimised design of state-of-the-art RF systems modelling, through to testing and operation

9 Cryogenics - plant infrastructure and system optimisation

Applications with impact

By propelling accelerator technology into the future we help deliver influential innovations that transform science and society, in sectors including:

9 Advanced manufacturing & materials (example: design of new ‘smart’ materials)

9 Energy & environment (example: design of more efficient solar cells)

9 Life science (example: development of more effective drugs)

9 Security & defence (example: development of novel screening technologies)

Taking technology further, faster

We drive the development of new, improved particle accelerators that push science forward, meet key industrial challenges and speed up the innovation cycle.
