Thanks to all of you who have dutifully brought bags of plastic caps

into All Saints’ for the Junior EarthStewards’ Plastic Cap Recycling program.

Through our efforts, hundreds of pounds of plastics were successfully recycled into shampoo bottles, lotion containers and other Aveda products!

More importantly, programs like ours have pointed out to plastics recyclers that consumers care about making sureall our plastics are reused – to the point of being willing to go out of our way to do so! This has resulted in a couple of changes that now make it possible to leave your caps on:1 Plastic recyclers have updated their equipment and

processes so they can handle #1 PET bottles with either#2 HDPE or #5 PP caps. Earlier problems like the topspopping off and becoming projectiles when the bottleswere crushed for transport to recyclers have been overcome with better technology.

1 Many plastic containers are now topped by the samematerial, eliminating the need to separate the two. Even those made out of different materials can now be sorted by plastics recyclers’ equipment.

At the same time technology was advancing, plastics recyclers

JES No Longer Accepting Plastic Capswere experiencing increased demand for post consumerproduct – thanks in no small part to consumers like youwho were pressuring the market to offer better alternatives. This made it economically feasible for them to update theirequipment to handle plastic containers with the caps on.So what do I do with all the caps that are in my cupboardawaiting transport to All Saints’? Go ahead and place themin a plastic bag that’s marked #4 (most grocery store andnewspaper bags) and place them in your recycling bins. This will keep them together and prevent them from fallinginto the cracks in the recycling stream. Then – and here’s the hard part – change your habits backand LEAVE THE CAPS ON all your plastic containers.

The deadline for the November issue is Thursday, November 7. Please email submissions to Lisa Bell-Davis at [email protected] (please cc [email protected]).

Advent is the Christian season of hopeful expectation.

In Scripture, we are awaiting thebirth of Christ. In our own time,

we are waiting for the return of theMessiah. During Advent we settle into

this time of waiting with intentionality, excited about whatwe know is to come, but also unsure of the future and evenperhaps a little fearful of the unknown. As a community, weare offering several opportunities to mark this special time.

Advent Wreath Workshop and ActivitiesMark this holy season of anticipation by creating your veryown Advent wreath, custom-crafted by you and your family. On Advent 1, between the morning services, The FlowerGuild will lead a workshop on making these time honoredsymbols of the season. Wreath making kits will be availablewith everything you’ll need to make a beautiful symbol ofthe season. You are welcome to bring your own fresh greensand work on your wreath in Ellis Hall that morning or simplypick up your kit and spread out at home to create yours.

The Advent EventThere will also be other Advents crafts to create, a visit fromJohn the Baptist, and Grasshopper Cookies to make and eat.Advent material will be available to you, to help enhanceyour Advent experience at home.Beginning December 1, sign up via Twitter or Facebook for our “random acts of prayer” in Advent. Each day duringAdvent, around noon, we will send out a brief prayer to remind you to stop for a moment and take on the mantleof hopeful expectation. Our online Advent Calendar willprovide more food for thought, including music, art, prayer, and essay. This is a great way to keep yourself and yourwhole family involved in the practices of the season, and to learn about the history and different interpretations ofAdvent that you might not see in church every Sunday.
