Presidents’ Message
Dear Friends,
Summer has passed, and Fall is here! I welcome you all and look forward to
meeting our new members and greeting all in the coming months.
We had a marvelous start to our 2014-15 year with our Opening Meeting and
Showcase in September, showcasing the many stimulating Learning Opportunities Study Groups which began in
October and November. We are thrilled to see our groups filling up quickly! If you haven't enrolled in one yet, or
wish to add another group to the one's you are attending, there is still time to do so!
November is a busy month for us. We offer three programs and events this month. On Sunday, November 9 we
have a must-see program and film happening at Seacrest. Lee Sterling, our speaker, will bring us a most wonderful
story of his family who was saved by Sousa Mendez during the greatest rescue of the Holocaust. The prize winning
film 'Disobedience' will be shown. On Tuesday, November 11 the Jewish Book Fair comes to Seacrest. Judith
Fein, author and genealogy expert is the speaker. San Dieguito Chapter is a Community Partner. Getting ready for
the holidays? Gifts to buy? What to wear? San Dieguito chapter will host a 'Breakfast & Style' event at Chico's at
the Forum Carlsbad on Sunday, November 23 at 9:00 am. Come for breakfast, stay for the show.....styling ideas,
fun and games with prizes galore! Soma Intimates will also display their beautiful sleepwear. This is a win-win day
for you and for our organization, you solve all your gift solutions for family and yourself, and Chico's and Soma will
donate 10% of all purchases made to our campaign, SUSTAINING THE MIND: SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND
SCHOLARSHIPS.
On Sunday, December 21 we invite our members to come to our 'Hanukkah Memories' Dinner Party and celebrate
with us. Bring a 'memory' with you to share! Held at Mount La Jolla Clubhouse, it promises to be a fun and delicious
celebration of the holiday.
What is 'Sustaining the Mind: Scientific Research and Scholarships'? This $3,000,000 campaign began in 2012. We
have raised 2/3 of our goal to date! Funds raised by our chapter goes to the support of research being done by our
acclaimed researchers in the 50 laboratories on the Brandeis University campus, providing the answers to moving
us closer to finding the cure for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's, ALS, autism and other diseases of the brain.
All San Dieguito chapter programming and events for the BNC year will go to benefit this important campaign. By
attending our programs and events throughout the year and supporting our efforts by making a contribution to
Sustaining the Mind, you will bring us closer to attaining our campaign goal and bringing our research closer to
finding the cure. Warm Wishes and Happy Holidays… Phyllis

The Rancho Bernardo and San Dieguito Chapters proudly present
University on Wheels
Dr.Bruce Magid Dean of the Brandeis International Business School
GEOPOLITICS, ENERGY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE: A World Ablaze
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago, the United States has been the unquestioned dominant economic, political and military force in the world. But as we enter 2015, America's dominance and leadership is being challenged by China in Asia, Russia in Europe, and political chaos in the Middle East. Regional geopolitical conflicts are diverting attention from the big issues that present challenges to all humanity--energy, climate change, nuclear proliferation, water shortages, and the continued lack of basic social services to much of the world's population. Dr. Magid will discuss the tough choices to be made between U.S. focus and engagement on issues and conflicts of global concern, and those that impact regional politics and the distribution of power and wealth.
Wednesday, January 7, 2015 11:30 a.m.

Meet Dr. and Mrs. Magid at an intimate, elegant cocktail reception featuring aperitifs, hors d’oeuvres, and amazing sunset views

A special chapter award – for a long history of service to the chapter This award was presented at the Opening Meeting to a surprised Judy Allegan and Harriet Wadia
Judy & Harriet were co-presidents in 1998-2001 and have held numerous other positions. Harriet has been a member for 31 years, Judy, for 23.
To everyone who worked and contributed to make 2013- 14 a fabulous year, thank you! We joke about recycling board members from one position to another, but the truth is, our chapter is blessed with the best leadership - past and present. These are only some of the positions these San Dieguito members have held, and most are still active board members or committee chairs:
Gayle Wise, past National President Dorothy Katz, past National Treasurer Phyllis Perkal, past National Vice President
Etta Schankerman, past Regional President Sondra Albers, past Regional President Pauline Green, current Regional President
There was something special about the Opening Meeting this year…
Almost a quarter of the attendees were new or potential members (four of whom joined that day). Several wrote notes saying they’d enjoyed themselves and look forward to the year. Thank you, everyone who attended, who were so enthusiastic, and who one day, it is hoped, will become the new leaders of the chapter. It’s true that ‘friends tell friends about Brandeis’, so thanks also go to everyone who shared, who cajoled or convinced a friend to give Brandeis a try.

THE BRANDEIS SCOOP From the BNC National President (edited for length)
Dear BNC Members:
As I begin my second year as your National President, I want to give you an update on all that has
occurred in the last year. Lots has changed.....and much remains the same.
Brandeis National Committee (BNC) is in a wonderful, new world....but it took effort to get here! BNC lost some staff
when Brandeis offered early retirement to anyone on staff throughout the university. Tom Hutchings went to full time,
Beth Bernstein and M'Lissa Brennan do the work of many people, and Tamar Vogel continues to work on social media for
our chapters and to promote BNC; volunteers help in the office, and we have hired Dania Khandaker.
And then we moved…to the university Development office. The university is investing in new study guides, and
increasing faculty visits to chapters. In addition, Brandeis and BNC have invested in a national marketing firm.
Your contributions to our Sustaining the Mind campaign have helped Brandeis scientists advance their research. (See
below) So while we have been through some changes, what remains constant is the strength of BNC and its commitment
to support Brandeis University. BNC is also a wonderful support to its members, providing a source of learning,
friendships and fun!
I am sending grateful thanks to all BNC members who work so hard in our chapters and regions, and on our national
board.....you are what make BNC so successful. L 'Shana Tovah.....Happy New year......may this coming year bring
blessings to all of you in the BNC family!
Warmly, Barbara Sander National President
Brandeis Among First to Receive National Institute of Health BRAIN Funding
Professors Sacha Nelson and John Lisman ’66, the Zalman Abraham Kekst Chair in Neuroscience and Professor of Biology, were among the first researchers to receive funds from the National Institute of Health and their new $100 million BRAIN (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies) Initiative, dealing with the brain and neurological disorders.
Researchers are still working to identify the thousands of different cell types in the human brain and the specific functions they perform. Each cell carries the same DNA but expresses different genes. How these cells differentiate — how they decide which genes to express — is a fundamental question in neuroscience.
“We’re very excited to study how neuronal cell types evolve across mammals,” says Nelson. We hope that this work will make it easier to extrapolate from what we learn in mice and rats to our own much more complex brains.”
Lisman and his team are exploring how different cell types involved in memory and special navigation, learn and recall a sequence of events.
