The First Week of Advent
"Presence" Advent, this powerful liturgical season that we are beginning, invites us to pause in silence to understand a presence. It is an invitation to understand that the individual events of the day are hints that God is giving us, signs of the attention He has for each one of us.
~ Pope Benedict XVI Homily at First Vespers of Advent, November 28, 2009

Are You “SURE” You’re a Registered Parishioner? Many times we meet people at church who attend mass, take part in events, or perhaps even have received their sacraments here. We’re so very glad you’re with us and part of our community. But that alone does not make you a parishioner. To be a member of the parish you have to REGISTER. Registering is very easy. You can register online at spasaparish.org or at the parish office. It only takes a few minutes. Everyone over the age of 18 is encouraged to register. Even if you’re an adult who received all your sacraments here as a child and still attend mass here, you need to register. Why register? First and foremost, it’s very important to register so we can serve your needs when, for example, you need a sponsor certification letter for Baptism or Confirmation. Also, to receive an acknowledgment of your donations for your income tax filing, you need to be registered so we have an official record of your giving over the year. So, please join us officially and register with the parish so we can meet all your needs now and in the future!

Mass Intentions When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his or her soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and com-forting than any sympathy card or flower arrangement. To have a Mass offered for a birthday, anniversary, or special need is appropriate, beneficial, and appreciated. You can find out what masses are availa-ble and schedule them online at SPASAMASS.ORG or call the office, 845-268-4464.

The St. Andrew Prayer
Hail and blessed be the hour and the moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight in Bethlehem in piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech thee, O My God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires through the merits of our Savior Jesus Christ and of his Blessed Mother.
Amen. A Novena recited daily from Nov. 30 to Dec. 24

ADVENT QUIZ ANWERS: 1. Coming or arrival, 2. Purple, 3. The Gloria, 4. Gaudete Sunday (Rejoice), 5. St. Andrew. His feast day is Nov. 30, and Advent begins on the Sunday closest to St. Andrew’s Day. He is the brother of St. Peter. There’s a tradition of praying the St. Andrew Christmas Prayer every day from Nov. 30 to Dec. 24. It’s piously believed that whoever says this prayer 15 times a day will obtain what is asked for. You’ll find this prayer on page 7.
SACREDNESS Surrounding and Within Us Part I
I n a spiritual or religious language we frequently use words like sacredness, sanc ty, holiness, or dignity.
We speak about sanc ty of human life from concep on un l natural death. We speak about the sacredness of a place of worship. We speak about human dignity when looking for a good life, work, or freedom. We speak about the priori es and values we believe in and bring them up as we educate our children. It’s good to know that this terminology is not exclusive and only for Chris ans. It’s clear throughout history that the pagan religions were always able to see the sacredness and the spiritual in every dimension of life. The term “pagan” comes from the La n paganus, which refers to those who lived in the country. When Chris anity began to grow in the Roman Empire, it did so at first primarily in the ci es. The people who lived in the country and who con nued to believe in “the old ways” came to be known as pagans. Pagans have been broadly defined as anyone involved in any religious act, prac ce, or ceremony which is not Chris an. Jews and Muslims also use the term to refer to anyone outside their religion. Ontology (part of philosophy about the nature of being) teaches that every being has four quali es: Unum, Verum, Bonum, Pulchrum (La n), which translated means: One — unique True — authen c Good — ethical Beau ful — part of the world’s picture. With everything being said above, we understand sacredness as the ability to see the goodness, beauty, and importance of every person and place and created thing. Facing secularism and rela vism in today’s world, we might be accused of being rigid when we organize our priori es and protect the values. But it is not about rigidity. It’s about understanding the order of preference in all crea on and truth. Sacredness, therefore, is not just the religious view, but the requirement of the pure reason, natural order, and law. At the threshold of the New Liturgical Year beginning with Advent, can we focus on the search and rediscovery of the divine image and God’s presence in each other, and all created works?
