We need help sponsoring the postage of seed parcels to Zimbabwe.Posting a seed parcel costs €17.00 per box.Over the past two years we have been lucky enough to have hadvegetable seeds donated to us by local garden centres and hard-ware shops who, with the permission of the seed manufacturer, gave them to the Rotary Club instead of destroying them when theIrish growing season had past. What have we done with the seeds? We had an appeal from the Rotary Club of Harare in Zimbabwe forvegetable seeds 2 years ago and we sent them some. Only on see-ing the results were we encouraged to get more seeds and do more. The Harare Rotary Club distribute the seeds to many homes.Melfort Farm, a home for elderly destitute former farm workersrendered homeless and jobless in the Land Reform programmewere given some of the seeds and can help sustain themselves withthe produce. Harare Rotary began supporting this home back in2002.A children's home in Makumbi, a catholic mission located inChinhamora Communal Lands outside Harare is another recipientwith the mission embarking on an ambitious gardening project tohelp feed the 120 orphans living there.Another Children's home growing vegetables is the IMBAChildren's Home in Seke, 40km south of Harare. This home wasset up by a dutch couple and looks after orphaned children frominfants upwards that are either orphaned through parents dying ofAIDS or simply abandoned due to financial difficulties their par-ents were having, they simply couldn't afford to feed the child. Those of you with access to the Internet can look upwww.imbachildrenshome.com. However posting all the seeds is adrain on our own finances and we do not want to withdraw ourinvaluable support to these homes and more homes and recipients. We have been so lucky to recently receive 126lbs of vegetableseeds....free. Appox value €7,500 ...But we need help getting themthere. Can you afford to sponsor a parcel? €17.00 or even helptowards it? If you can please hand your donation in marked RotaryClub Seeds to our meeting venue THE RED STORE and ourPresident Karen will be sure to get it. If you want your donationacknowledged please put you name and address on it too. PleaseHelp, it will make a huge difference to more lives then you canimagine. Many Thanks, Dorothy Heaphy PRO.

By Christy ParkerFew settings in east Cork offeras divine a distraction from theprevailing gloom of Ireland'seconomy and climate than thefive-star Castlemartyr Resort.Yet, it is not merely the sublimesplendour of 222 acres of ram-bling landscape, with its sump-tuous serenity, that impresses.Nor is it merely the expansiveinterior that carries style andservice to a new level of sensualappeasement. There is all that, but within the prevailing serenity, Castlemartyr Resort also leadsthe way in lasting self-enhancement, through a physical fitnesscentre the equal of any in Europe and beyond. The Castlemartyr Health & Fitness Centre is 24,000sq metres ofexcellence, embracing a spa, gym, treatment rooms and relatedfacilities, constructed and managed to the highest of standards. Under the supervision of Cork man Jonathan Lee, the Centre iscurrently accepting a limited number of new members. Thosecommitting to a year-long enrolment will enjoy exclusive accessto unrivalled training facilities, plus reduced rates pertaining to thevarious spa treatments on offer. On joining, every member is given a complimentary fitnessassessment, from which an appropriate fitness programme isdevised. "We accept all ages over 16, regardless of their level offitness," reassures Jonathan. "And the programme is reviewedevery four to six weeks."

CLASSESThereafter, one can choose and swap from training alone, availingof a personnel trainer or attending a fitness class. The classesinclude Aqua Aerobics (improves fitness of heart and lungs, whilereducing fat), Boxercise (enhances strength and co-ordination),Pilates (promotes better balance, posture and a more definedabdominal area), Yoga (treats joints, ligaments, muscles and theinner self) Spin Cycling (benefits thighs, hamstrings and heartwhile losing weight), Fab Blaster (concentrates on posture andabdominal area), Bodyfit Circuits (improves fitness and strength)and Tone 'n' Trim (addresses all problem areas).

GYMThe gym, at 200sq metres, is spacious, light flooding through intandem with the view of the surrounding pastures. It is a facilitybedecked with equipment produced by the world- leading expo-nents, Technogym. "Wehave machines that pickup a person's heart beat sothat they can train to thattempo," vouches Jonathanwhose mix of convivialityand enthusiasm is, initself, heart-warming. Helists the apparatus:"Treadmills, bikes, cross-trainers, oars and a wavemachine (an advancedstepper machine), dumb-bells up to 30kg and vari-ous other resistanceequipment."Overseeing this domain,

Overseeing this domain, Jonathan, 26 and a rugby enthusiast iswell qualified. His credentials include an internation-ally renowned Ace Certificate, as well as otherimpressive recognised certificates garnered at homeand in America. "All our health centre staff are high-ly qualified," he guarantees. One might well anticipate that the combination ofhigh-tech equipment and highly-trained personnelmight engineer a sense of inadequacy in say, an over-weight chain smoker keen to resurrect his life -if noteven save it! "We can devise a fitness programme forany level," smiles Jonathan. "And we also offerexpert nutritional and physiological advice."

Membership extends, literally, far beyond the gym, with theresort's grounds accessible for walking, running or jogging, aloneor accompanied by a trainer. It also includes use of the spa's 20mby 15m swimming pool, with a depth of 1.5m, crystal-clear, ozone(as against chlorine) treated water.

WATER LOUNGERA hop, skip and jump from the gym (where Ronan O'Gara's size 8boots from Munster's 2008 Heineken cup win hang encased), oneencounters the Water Lounger. Once lying prone on the pipes, bub-bling water jets simultaneously raise and massage the user's body. Afterwards, one can retire to the nearby sauna or steam room todescribe the experience to fellow aspirants. After which the tropi-cal-scented shower may be difficult to decline! Architecturally, the Centre's ambience mingles marble-effect wallswith tan floors and soft lighting which, allied to the wide-spanviews, produces a zone that is both comfortable and casual. The post-gym facilities alone are an inducement to membership! The changing rooms are decked with complimentary towels, robes, body lotions and soaps. Close by, 'relaxation rooms' serve as

communal havens, where cashmere blankets drapeacross semi-reclining beds that "react to your body, massaging it, like a water bed," as Jonathandescribes. Complimentary fruits, smoothies andbeverages also await within.

TREATMENT ROOMS & SALONIf one can drag oneself from this refuge from real-ity, a corridor of eight treatment rooms harbourpersonal therapists who will massage tired mus-cles, relieve strains and regenerate every tissuewith an issue. Bearing down on the goal of ultimate feelgood, one turns the door handle of the salon. Therein liechairs but not as we know them. These chairsaccommodate head to toe services; from shampooto pedicure, there is virtually no area of the bodythat may not be pampered or treated without leav-

Page 10: Nov 2709

that may not be pampered or treated without leaving one's seat. Indeed the seats themselves will massage the occupant, as will the

attending beauty therapist. Again, gazing out upon the grazinghorses on the lush grassland, one can submit to facials, bodywraps, tinting, exfoliation, hair removal and manicures. These treatments are not free, but members can enjoy considerableprice reductions and special offers throughout the year, from amenu that includes an aromatic oil and salt scrub with full bodymassage (€150/90 mins) and aback, feet and legs massagewith anti-stress back therapyand hot stones back & shouldermassage (€140/75 mins). Here,as throughout the facilities, therenowned Anne Semonin beau-ty products feature most promi-nently in the soothing of thesoul.Done, dusted and delighted, one will descend to the groundfloor to leave the building. There, the twinkling waters ofthe spa pool will once againentice. The happy babble of theJacuzzi will tease. The poolside loungers -outdoors in summer-will tempt. As the rain kamikazes against the wide windows, youturn towards the changing rooms again...

By Christy Parker A Youghal fisherman came across an intriguing item during a walkon Youghal beach recently. Barry Cloghessy was approachingRedbarn from the Youghal side when he spotted a fluorescent pinkobject, blue at either end, on the shoreline. Closer inspectionrevealed it was an American-made buoy, such as would be used toguide a boat to lobster pots. The buoy was cov-ered with miniaturebarnacles fromwhich grew someform of marine lifethat resembledlong, thick, jelly-like worms. "Thissuggests it was inthe water for a verylong time, probablythree or four yearsat least," says Barry. The object was all the more interesting for the man-made mark-ings it held. It was adorned with several small reflective strips, presumably to help locate it at night The Number 3 was festoonedon upper end in felt-tip marker, while the words 'Spit and Sputter'were also written on the side. Other scribbled markings were the numbers '648-8413' and'Home: 643-2277,' which possibly are local telephone numberswithin its area of origin. The number 105958 was also written onit. "That may be a licence number of some sort," muses Barry Finally, the manufacturer's identity, barely discernible on theunderside, was found to be 'Polyform US Ltd.' A fast internetsearch shows this to be a company based in the city of Kent, in theKing's County, Washington, eastern USA. The company's website indicates that the buoy is form its LD(Low Drag) series, patented in 1989. It would be used to retrieve700-lb. crab pots in dangerous seas of up to 30ft. The reduced sur-face drag is intended to facilitate "faster, safer pick ups as well aseasing strain on both crew and gear," say the makers. However, it remains a mystery how from whence the buoy trav-elled to Youghal. Various theories have been floated and efforts toland the truth are ongoing via international channels.

'WHERE YA FROM BUOY?' Just one year after opening their new premises in Catherine St(formerly the League of the Cross), Cumann na Daoine is facingpossible closure if new Government cost cutting plans get the goahead. Like all other CDPs, Cumann na Daoine understands itwill receive no more funding after December 2009."Closure would be yet another blow to Youghal" says LorraineO'Sullivan of Cumann na Daoine's Management Committee. "Weare calling on the people of Youghal to urge their Counsellors,TDs and Ministers Curran and O'Cuiv to maintain support forlocally run CDPs. And if Cumann na Daoine has helped you or afamily member in any way please write or phone and tell us - indi-vidual testimonies are critical as we try to prove the value of CDPsin face of major cutbacks".Cumann na Daoine provides a range of services to the people ofYoughal. For those seeking work it provides one to one supportwith CV and interview preparation as well as individual guidanceand jobs noticeboards . The CDP provide a range of educationand training courses - computers, internet and email, parentingskills, arts and crafts, driving lessons, and personal well being toname just a few. Cumann na Daoine also supports a variety ofgroups - the men's social club, women's group, DisabilityAwareness and Action Group, walking group, Women's Fun andFriendship Group, Women's Network, Community Night group,Music Group, Transition Towns and Fair Trade Co-Op andYoughal Community Transport Group. In their new buildingCumann na Daoine also provides a base for a range of groups andactivities -St Vincent de Paul, Youghal Advocacy Service, FASclinic and courses, Tai Chi, GROW, Tabor Lodge, weekly bingo, and Community Radio Youghal all operate from the building.Cumann na Daoine is managed a voluntary board of management- all local people committed to Youghal who give their time on avoluntary basis. For many years volunteers struggled to securefunding for a community building. Now just one year after open-ing its new premises Cumann na Daoine's future is uncertain."We are expecting the results of a review, which will tell us if theDepartment considers us to be viable" says Lorraine. "CDPsjudged to be not viable will be closed in January, and even thoseconsidered viable will have to wind up their companies, disbandtheir voluntary boards of management and be taken over byPartnership/Integrated Development Companies on reduced budg-ets. All this at a time when CDPs are most needed".

In the firstgame of the tournament, Pat Collins defeated Davy Foley in a Thursday night tussle. Thenlast Sunday we had three games up for decision. In the first game,Aggie Hurton defeated Barry Dunne by 2 games to 1 with a greatdisplay that will mark her out as one to watch later in the tournna-ment. Following this match we had one of the most excitinggames seen in a long time when Eileen Dower defeated local per-sonality Declan Hickey by 2 games to 1 in a great game.Following an erratic start, Eileen adjusted her playing style mid-way through the game to brilliant effect coming from way behindto defeat a nervous-looking Declan who will wonder how he man-aged to lose this game. In the final game, Mick Costin defeatedBrian Dunne 2 games to 0 with some great rings being thrown. And so the 2009 tournament is well underway. The organiserswould ask that people remember the €5 entry fee and also try andplay the games when they are requested to do so as we wish to tryand run the tournament off with as little fuss as possible. WEST WATERFORD NEWS

By Christy Parker Last weekend's CRY Garda report reflected on a relatively quietweek in the Youghal area. Sergeant John Sharkey told presenterPat O'Reilly that gardai are keen to trace a black Opel estate thatleft a filling station without paying for petrol on WednesdayNovember 18th. The foreign-registered car has been involved insimilar incidents previously. Sergeant Sharkey gave the reg num-ber as "something similar to 7766 FMYLast Friday night (November 20th), at about 9.30 pm, the HalfWay bar on the Tallow Road was victimised by a group of drinkerswho seem to have absconded with several a bottle of spirits. It wasreported that the group, who had been drinking in the bar, liftedthe liquor from behind the counter.

Breath testingThe garda warned people to be extra vigilant in the run-up toChristmas, both in regard to their personal possessions and to sus-picious activity in their environment, which he recommended theyreport to the garda station on 024-2200. He also advised that gardai will be increasing their random breathtesting in the coming weeks. Sergeant Sharkey stressed that while"some people get upset by the random process, its part of the over-all, deterrent effect, with a little old lady driver as likely to be test-ed as anyone else." He added that the message is likely to bespread by those who do get tested, again proving its value as adeterrent. "We have had about five or six such checkpoints autho-rised by the Superintendent in the area in recent times but that willrise as we approach Christmas," he stated. Other vehicle-related incidents during last week included fourminor accidents and two cars seized for not having tax or insur-ance under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act.

Community gardaThe sergeant said that, following interests from several parties, theinternal recruitment of a full-time Youghal Community Garda, saw Garda Peter Queally selected for the post. "He has begunattending community events from last Monday, including theResidents Network," he explained.

Community Alert meetings Sergeant Sharkey concluded his report with a reminder that theCommunity Alert initiative will hold its AGM on TuesdayNovember 24th. This meeting will see officers elected and hehoped there would be an appropriate good attendance. Dwelling on the issue a little, the sergeant said the hour-longmonthly public meetings provided an update on what is and hasbeen happening in the area. It also offered a forum whereby ques-tions and concerns can be addressed directly to the gardai on mat-ters of crime and community. "We are as open to criticism ads any-thing else," he assured. "It's all about improving public safety andif we have to improve, we will do so." He then illustrated the intrinsic value of the meetings by recallingone local man testifying that he had not realised what went on,including the work undertaken by gardai, prior to his attending themeetings. "So it's a learning experience at the very least,"observed the sergeant. The AGM takes place at 8pm in the WalterRaleigh hotel.

Bru na Si the home of Comhaltas in this region has taken on a newimagery. Local artist Brigid Shelly together with her daughter AoifeBrockie has painted a mural on the gable at Brú na Si. Comhaltasmembers felt that the centre needed an image that would depict whatwent on in the building. The new image will make it easier for every-one especially the tourists, to recognise, and find the centre which hasbecome the home of traditional music and cultureWhen Comhaltas treasurer Don Bockie heard his daughter Aoife wasseeking a job that would fulfil her work experience project for schoolboth he and Brigid came up with the idea of catering for both needs.Brigid would paint a mural on the gable at Brú and Aoife would serveas her apprentice. The end result according to Comhaltas secretaryMary Treacy is "awesome"The painting portrays musicians young and old playing a range of tra-ditional music instruments with the moon as a backdrop. The idea forthe painting also conjures up the magic of the fairies playing musicin the moonlight who have given the name to the centre "Brú na Si."The local landscape is also encompassed as the musicians are reflect-ed on the water which provides the foreground to the painting.Access to BrúIt is a matter of deep satisfaction to the members of Comhaltas to wit-ness the cutting of the overgrown margin along the access route toBrú na Si. Already this improvement has been very uplifting and ithas been favourably commented upon. It is expected that the pro-posed removal of the concrete bollards will further enhance the visu-al impact of the area. The removal of these concrete bollards will alsoenable a "ride on mower" to be used for the regular grass cutting ofthis margin.Comhaltas members also believe that future short term improvementsshould include the planting of appropriate trees along the grass mar-gin. In the long term it is hoped that the planned through road willcome to pass. In the meantime these simple improvements wouldquickly bring the standard of the area up to that of other areas in thetown.Brú na Si.Meanwhile Brú na Si continues to be as busy as ever. Comhaltasclasses together with the activities of other organisations haveensured maximum usage of this community facility. It is now esti-mated that in excess of 500 hundred users pass through the gates ofBrú each week. This unprecedented success at Brú has brought its own challenges

especially with traffic and parking in the area. Inside the gates of BrúComhaltas has provided extra car spaces as part of current upgradingof the facility. In the long term we intend to carry out furtherimprovements both inside our own gates and outside them. We arechuffed to hear that it is intended to provide extra temporary carspaces in the area.Comhaltas as a voluntary organisation already has a full work load indelivering the services it provides, however we are committed to thewell being of the community and the upkeep of its environs. We willprovide a lead role in exploring the integrated development of thearea. To this end we are happy to put forward and support the follow-ing suggestions.· Facilitate the setting up of a local community action group.· Accommodate the community meetings and social functions

of this group· Support the provision of resources· Encourage social networking.· Provide storage of equipmentOther Comhaltas Objectives· Continue to lobby for link road as it is deemed necessary to

enhance access and therefore the full development potential of Brú na Si

Easy Ways to Add the Christmas Spirit toYour Home

If you're like most people, you don't have much time left at the endof a busy day to do anything extra. But at this time of year, youwant to do something to make your home look festive and specialand create the wonderful Christmas holiday atmosphere. You'llfind some ideas here for quick and simple ways to add a festivelook to your home without spending a lot of time or money. Andyou'll have time left over to really enjoy Christmas! Most are our ideas are very easy, many are free, and none takesmore than a minimum of time and effort. Decorate Everything With Bows Tie generous ribbons to chair backs, candlesticks, picks in plants, wreaths, garlands, basket handles, drapery tie-backs, stair railings, and doorknobs. Bows look festive and the ribbons you choose should tie togetherwith the rest of your decorating. Choose ribbons in colors and pat-terns that coordinate with your decorating scheme. You don't have to stick with red and green. Choose plaids or flo-rals that tie in. If you can't find anything that looks quite right, thenchoose metallic silver, gold, green, or red. Choose a ribbon that you can untie and re-tie each year. This willsave money in the long run, and you'll end up with a good collec-tion.When the holidays are over, untie the ribbons and press them light-ly. The bows won't get crushed and the ribbons will be ready whenyou want to take them out the next year. Use holiday tableware for every meal in December. Look through your cupboards and get out any dishes that look fes-tive.Discount stores often carry seconds of name brand china, as wellas fun designs that are not so common.

DECORATING FOR ACHRISTMAS PARTY

The sound of a crackling fire. The joy of newly fallen snow. Theanticipation of Santa Claus. The smell of a cedar tree. The taste ofa freshly baked Christmas cookie. At its very essence, Christmasis a holiday that excites our senses. How things sound, look, feel, smell, and taste evoke memories of holidays past, flooding us withemotions. The best way to re-create these memories -- and to create newmemories for our families and friends -- is to surround ourselveswith things that remind us of the season. Decorating is one of theeasiest ways to accomplish this. Whether you are planning a smallget together or a large party, decking your home in seasonal splen-dor will satiate the senses and fill all your guests with holiday spir-it.The Colors of Christmas: Christmas is all about color. Glowingstrings of lights, festive stockings, and beautifully wrapped giftstake center stage. The colors you choose to emphasize in yourChristmas decorations can impact the feelings they evoke.Consider your goals -- icy and intense, cozy and traditional, mod-ern and fresh, elegant and luxurious -- before deciding on a colorscheme.Cool blue looks icy and cold, like the light of winter after a heavysnow has settled. The spectrum ranges from pale blue so light itshimmers to shocking cobalt. Whether you choose to use variousshades all together or stick with one main color, blue will electri-fy and intensify your decorating scheme. White or silver is oftenadded to enhance the decor; mixing in greenery and other naturalscan also accentuate the various hues of blue.Seeing red -- and green: Conjure up memories of Christmas past, and you likely envision a holiday decked out in red and green. These colors are synonymous with Christmas; they're the tradi-tional colors most often associated with the season. Technically, red and green work well together because they are opposite eachother on the color wheel. In practice, red and green go together in almost any setting in yourhome, from a mantel festooned with a natural garland and flankedwith red stockings to a table centerpiece that highlights Christmaschina.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas: A white Christmas can be clas-sic and traditional or glamorous and fresh. That's the beauty ofdecorating with such a versatile color. With contemporary interi-ors, an all-white Christmas is en vogue: current, up-to-date, mod-ern. With traditional decors, all white lends a homespun feel to theholidays. Twinkling white lights and touches of silver are spectac-ular accents to an all-white decorating scheme. Flickering candlesor a roaring fire add warmth to pure white and play up the shim-mery effect of any gold or silver accents. Now that you have your decorations picked out, you’re ready to

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN YOUGHAL

Bright ideas for clueless Christmas shoppers

YOU'VE left it late, very late - and you've still not got all yourChristmas presents. And you simply haven't a Scooby Doo whatto get the family's resident sports nut. Well, worry yourself not,for below are some last-minute sporty gift ideas for the hard ofthinking that should make a mockery of the old aphorism thatmoney can't buy you love.1. Give it some juicePerhaps the gift you're looking is for a person who is not particu-larly sporty. You can still buy them into the health kick though bygiving them a juicer. These things vary greatly in price and func-tion, but all the recipient then has to do is add fruit and or vegeta-bles and they can stave off ill-health with multi-vitamin drinks theyear round. And it'll make you feel good just wrapping it up.2. eBay away!Searching for that classic 1970s Gareth Edwards Wales strip?Desperately need a spike from Steve Ovett's Moscow runningshoe? Fancy bidding for Muhammad Ali's boxer shorts? Well thenthis online auction is the place for you: www.ebay.ie3. Get on your bikeTraffic jams, train delays, and anger. Lots of raw, vicious, unre-lenting anger. Sound familiar? Well, there is an alternative to yourstress-levels receiving their daily health-wrecking top-up on thejourney to work: the humble bike. 4. Book itA book is always a safe bet when all else fails. And this lot are allunder €25. Books are available in all good books shops.Perhaps the best sports book of the year is Bill Borrow's unoffi-cial biography of snooker loopy Alex Higgins: The Hurricane. It’sa thoroughly entertaining story of how a flawed genius squan-dered millions and recently ended up in a hostel for the homeless. And without most of his teeth.

It's also been a year for ghost-written 'autobiographies', withNiall Quinn's effort, Niall Quinn: The Autobiography and that ofhis Irish team-mate Roy Keane, entitled Keane, among the best.At least Mike Atherton bothered to pen his own: Opening Up.5. Gym riddle'Tis the season to be jolly, we're told, which is a convenient euphe-mism for eating and drinking ourselves into oblivion until we stepinto the annual confessional of New Year's resolutions and decidewe need to do some exercise. The massive swell in our waistlinesthus sees a massive swell in gym memberships. Why not beat theJanuary scales by signing your loved one up for membership of ahealth club?6. Spa humbug!Christmas is a stressful time of year. All the family in one house

Irish Christmas Traditions

Nollaig Shona Dhuit is Merry Christmas in Irish Gaelic, which is still taught in schools in Eire, the Irish Republic.Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. Christmasin Ireland is a traditional holiday in both parts of the island, and very much a family and religious celebration! As inFrench Canada, Roman Catholic families attend MidnightMass together on Christmas Eve. Christmas is the importantcelebration, rather than the New Year, which has moreemphasis in Scotland. The festivities last from ChristmasEve until January 6th, when decorations are put away. Christmas PreparationsMost homes have fireplaces with mantelpieces and these areoften decorated with holly and ornaments. It is common tohang mistletoe in a doorway (and to kiss under it!). Manychildren are given Advent Calendars, and each day inDecember they open one of the slots for a chocolate treat. Itis traditional to give gifts (usually money) before the holi-days to people who perform services during the year, forexample to the milkman who delivers milk bottles to thedoor. People also clean their houses thoroughly and in thepast, it was common to whitewash as well, as a means ofpurification.During December, people bake Christmas cakes, puddingsand mince pies. As a child I used to make shortbread, whichmy grandfather particularly enjoyed! Hospitality is a way oflife in Ireland, and anyone who visits the house, is enter-tained with tea and cakes, especially during the holidays.Trees are decorated with a star or an angel on top. Childrenput a stocking (or a pillowcase!) at the bottom of their bedsfor Santa Claus. I remember waking up on Christmas morn-ing and going through pillowcases of toys in my own or mybrother's bedroom. Gifts usually include an apple, an orangeor tangerine, and chocolate coins. My mother recalls receiv-ing a piece of coal or peat (used as fuel in fireplaces) in leanyears. This was not given for bad behavior but simplybecause there was nothing else.

Christmas Eve to St. Stephen's DayIn many areas, on Christmas Eve, a lit candle is placed in awindow (nowadays it can be an electric light!). This goesback to traditions of hospitality in ancient times. The idea isto help light the way of the Holy Family or any other poortraveller who is out on that night. There can be a WhiteChristmas, but snowfalls are rarely heavy. As in many coun-tries, it is very important for family members to be together

for ChristmasEve andChristmas Day. People oftenhave Christmasdinner in theafternoon, anytime between 1and 3 p.m.. Asa child, Ir e m e m b e rbeing servedmore than one'fowl' for

Christmas dinner - usually a goose and sometimes chicken, duck or pheasant as well, along with stuffing, roast potatoesand gravy. Now turkey is much more common along with aham, and sometimes spiced beef. Dessert is Christmas pud-ding with rum sauce or brandy butter and cream. Sometimes

a trifle is served as well! Christmas Crackers are on thetable, and everyone pulls one with the person next to them.Whoever ends up with the longer end gets the contents, which include a party hat, a small toy and a riddle. December 26th (Boxing Day in England) is celebrated as St.Stephen's Day in Eire and is a public holiday. A wren sup-posedly betrayed the presence of St. Stephen when he was inhiding. He was then caught and executed. Wren boys gofrom door to door with a wren on a stick (today the wren isnot a real one), singing a traditional song and begging for treats. Pantomines, suchas Babes in the Wood or Puss in Boots, are performed at thistime also.

Stay Safe in the Kitchen this Christmas

ARE you sure you know how to prepare your turkey thisChristmas? The Food Standards Agency says many of usdon't and poor preparation and cooking can lead to food poi-soning.

December is the worst month of the year for food poison-ing. One in five of all cases can be traced back to under-cooked poultry such as chicken or turkey. So here are someof the things the FSA wants to warn against: - Don't cook the stuffing inside the turkey. This can preventeither from cooking through properly, so they should becooked separately instead. - Do not wash the turkey before cooking: this can spreadbacteria around the kitchen and lead to cross-contamination.Correct cooking will kill all bacteria. - Ideally a frozen turkey should be defrosted in the fridge. Two thirds of people defrost at room temperature but againthis can cause problems. - Cook your turkey for 18 to 20 minutes per pound inweight. An undercooked turkey can result in food poisining.

Christmas dinner isthe biggest mealmany of us will cook. We're often preparingmeals that we would-n't normally make -and we frequentlybuy more food thanwe can store in thefridge.

The FSA’s head ofmicrobiology says,"The ad campaignencourages people tothink about how toprepare, cook and eat safely, most food poisoning incidentsare easily avoided and with a little bit of extra thoughteverybody can enjoy the festive season."

One of the problems is catering for higher numbers, theaverage Christmas cook will be serving dinner for at leastseven people. And we all seem to be guilty of buying a big-ger turkey than necessary, the average weight of theChristmas bird is 12 pounds and that's enough to feed up to18 people, but however big it is, you should use up all left-overs within 48 hours.

But the agency's advice is simple: plan a realistic amountof food, store raw meat in the bottom of your fridge, washutensils used on raw meat and make sure the bird is fullythawed and cooked thoroughly to ensure you stay healthythis Christmas.

Safety at ChristmasChristmas lights are beautiful and much safer than candles, but allthat electricity can cause problems if not used properly. Christmaslights can get hot enough to burn or ignite other decorations. Thecords can fray, leading to a short. Decorating with lights oftenrequires the use of a ladder, and improper use could lead to aninjury. Practice ladder safety when you are putting up Christmaslights. When you put up Christmas lights this season - or holidaylights during any season - be sure to follow these Christmas lightsafety tips. Choose Christmas lights that have been tested and deemed safe by a reputable testing laboratory, the best are UL or ETL.Christmas lights listed as safe by these laboratories will note that on the packaging. Try to use the cooler-burning "mini" Christmaslights as opposed to the traditional larger bulbs. The older styleburns much hotter. Only use Christmas lights that have fuses in theplugs. Inspect each set of Christmas lights - old or new - for dam-age. Return or throw out any set with cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Replace burned outbulbs promptly with bulbs of the same wattage. Never hang Christmas lights on a metal tree. The tree can becomecharged with electricity and shock someone. The tree can alsoshort out the Christmas lights and cause a fire.Want Christmas lights outdoors? Use outdoor Christmas lights. The packaging will note whether the lights can be used indoors, outdoors, or both. All outdoor electrical decorations should beplugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). You canbuy portable units for outdoor use, or you can have them perma-nently installed by an electrician. Use extension cords properly.Stay away from powerlines or feeder lines (these go from the poleto the house).Secure outside Christmas lights with insulated hold-ers (never use tacks or nails) or run strings of lights through hooks. When you leave or go to bed at night, turn off your Christmaslights. Never pull on a string of Christmas lights, it stresses thecords and can lead to fraying. Store Christmas lights looselywrapped for the same reason. Safety first when buying toys "What should I look out for when buying toys?"There are varioussafety regulations about toys sold in the EU. These offer someprotection to consumers - and to the children who will be usingthese products - but remember that safetystandards alone can't guarantee thesafe use of toys. That's where com-mon sense comes into play. Carefullyexamine any toy you buy. Bear inmind that a gift to an older child cansometimes prove lethal in the handsof a smaller child. Always respectage warnings (for example, "Notsuitable for children under threeyears old"), and any instructions oradvice on safe use of the toy.Thismeans, for instance, that achemistry set intended for a10-year-old shouldn't begiven to a three-year-old.

QuestionBefore I lost my job earlier this year I received my wages month-ly. I'm now getting a social welfare payment weekly and find thatthis is making it more difficult for me to manage my householdbills which come every two months. Is there a way to make moreregular payments for my ESB and phone bills?AnswerIf you are getting your social welfare payment through the postoffice, you can take part in the Household Budget Scheme. Underthe scheme, you choose a fixed amount to be deducted from yourpayment each week and this goes towards paying your bill fromthe ESB, Bord Gáis or Eircom. You can also use it for local author-ity rent or mortgage payments. It is intended to extend the schemeto include other telecom and utility bills. You can take part in the Household Budget Scheme if you are get-ting Jobseeker's Benefit, Jobseeker's Allowance, Back to WorkEnterprise Allowance, Back to Education Allowance or Back toWork Allowance. The scheme is also available to those getting asocial welfare pension, a carer's payment, One-Parent FamilyPayment, Disability Allowance, Supplementary WelfareAllowance or Farm Assist.

You can choose to have up to a quarter of your social welfare pay-ment deducted. The minimum deduction you can choose dependson the type of bill; for Eircom and ESB, for example, the mini-mum is €3.50. The scheme is operated by An Post. You can get an applicationform in your local post office or online at www.anpost.ie. Youcomplete this form for each eligible bill you want to pay and sendit to the following address: Household Budget Scheme, Freepost,An Post, GPO, Dublin 1. If you want to change the amount youpay each week, you can do so by completing a form with the newamount and returning it to An Post. You can also get further infor-mation from An Post online at www.anpost.ie, at the addressabove or by phone on 1800 70 71 72.If you need help with budgeting and managing your financial sit-uation, the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) pro-vides free advice. There is useful information on the MABS web-site, www.mabs.ie, or you can contact the MABS Helpline at 1890283 438. Many credit unions also provide a similar bill paymentsystem. This column has been prepared by Youghal Citizens Information Centre. JUNIOR A FOOTBALL LEAGUE FINAL:Glenbower Rovers 4-08 Lisgoold 0-08Our footballers ended the year on a winning note in Pairc UiChinneide, Killeagh on Sunday evening by winning the PatrickO'Mahony Memorial trophy. Both teams had an outstanding sea-son, both unbeaten in the league. That was until the final game ofthe season. Poor weather conditions hampered what should havebeen a good game of football. But credit to both sides for an enjoy-able game of football so late in the year. Lisgoold opened the scor-ing but points from Joe Deane and Ger Collins and goals fromAndy Walsh and Joe Deane saw us go in at the break 2-4 to 0-5.Lisgoold hit a purple patch in the opening of the second halfnotching up another 3 points which could have been more exceptfor some great defending by our defence. Then we found a rhythmagain. Some well executed points from Padraig McCarthy, JoeDeane, John O'Connor and Stephen Murphy extended our leadbefore Brian Collins goaled twice to put it beyond Lisgoold'sreach. Joe Deane accepted the trophy on behalf of GlenbowerRovers. Congratulations to all involved, silverware for the dinner-dance.LOTTO: There was no winner of the lotto on the 16th. The num-bers were 16, 34, 35. Next week's jackpot stands at 6,000 euro.DINNERDANCE: This Saturday night our annual dinnerdancewill take place in the new ballroom in Garryvoe Hotel. Music byArt Supple and disco till late. Great night assured. Contact UrsulaColeman or Sean Treacy for tickets.

KILLEAGH GAA Club

The last few weeks have been hectic but rewarding to say the leastfor the Youghal Club. First up in the calendar was the MunsterJunior Championship. Competing in this we hade KillianMcCarthy in the U13’s and Keane McCarthy in the U11’s. Bothplayers have been training hard and with some long coaching ses-sions being put in with Keith Gallogley they were both heading offlooking fairly sharp. One can say that the training hours in thecourt reaped dividends as both players returned with Munstermedals. Killian won a Munster U13 Bronze medal and his broth-er Keane won a Munster U11 Silver medal. Huge congratulationsare due to both players! Keane with his Silver medal has nowqualified for the All Ireland’s that are being held in Fermoy overthe weekend of 28th & 29th November. We encourage thoseavailable to travel to please make the short trip to Fermoy to sup-port Keane.Next up was the Ballinrobe Open. Anxious to follow up his formfrom the Kilkenny Open last season was Keith Gallogley. Keithentered in his new category as a ‘D’ player. He also entered theOpen section. In the open he did well to win through to play atiebreaker game before losing out in the first round. However, inthe D section, he did much better and after a long day of racquet-ball was happy to be through to play in the semi-final on Sunday. He continued to play well on the Sunday where he won his semi-final in a tiebreaker match. That afternoon he played in the finaland again found himself in a tiebreaker game. Keith was on topof his game, he won the tiebreaker and it is great to report thatKeith won the D section and is now promoted to the C section andamongst some of the elite racquetball players in Ireland. Welldone Keith!Last weekend we had two teams head off the Kilkenny to play inthe National Club Championships. Teams were to have a mini-mum of two and a maximum of four players. Each team wouldplay two singles and one doubles game in each round. Gameswere two matches with each match won scoring the team a point. In the unlikely event of a draw it is the team with the most acesthat go through. The Youghal Teams were as follows: TeamCuchulainn – Jody Cooper & Trevor Gallogley, Team Platinum –Olan McCarthy, Ian Ryan, Michael Pierce & John Kenefick. Bothteams have been in training for the past few weeks and combina-tions of tough ladder & winter league games had all players sharp.First match started at 9pm on Saturday, by 7pm we had both teamsthrough to the semi final. Fortunately they were not up againsteach other!! Team Cuchulainn did great and were the first throughto the final, things did not go so good for Team Platinum and theirdays games were ended at semi-final. In the final TeamCuchulainn (Jody & Trevor) were up against a four man team fromthe home venue, Kilkenny. After the six final matches it wasdrawn at 3-3 for each team and it was up to the referee to countback the aces. The air was tense to say the least and it wasKilkenny who claimed top spot on a margin of 1 ace more than theYoughal team. It does not get much closer than that. But is itabsolutely great to note that coming back to the Youghal Club wehave National Club Championship Silver medals with JodyCooper & Trevor Gallogley and Bronze medals for OlanMcCarthy, Ian Ryan, Michael Pierce & John Kenefick!!Of particular mention we must congratulate Ian Ryan, MichaelPierce and John Kenefick as this was their first time playing rep-resentative racquetball for the Club – here’s hoping your futurecompetition’s are as rewarding – I reckon there is a big assault onthe ladder planned – watch out all!! Finally I would like to report that the Winter League has been upand running for the past few weeks. A total of 24 from the 128games have been played. So it is still early days but already com-petition is fierce as players are going flat out in their games. Theschedule is posted in the alley and we ask that players try to keepto the schedule and get their games played for the deadline as weneed to get the Cup and Plate competitions started in the new year.

year.Renovation work has begun on the showers and the mens showerhas been complete and looks great. The ladies is planned to becomplete in the coming weeks.Membership is overdue and we ask anyone who has not paid toplease contact Keith Gallogley or Brian Fitzgerald with sameASAP. Next committee meeting is on Thursday 26th November. Please contact the committee should you have anything you wantdiscussed.

UI6 FOOTBALLERS ARE COUNTY CHAMPIONS 2009Youghal 2-7 v Carberry Rangers 1-4The Youghal U16 Footballers finally got to play the County Finalon Sunday last after winning a toss for home advantage when noother pitch could be made available for the tie but those of the twoClubs involved. The visitors started the brighter with a near galeat their back and raced to a 2 point lead and were rampant withnearly all the ball. Youghal were finding it very difficult to get outof their own half but with Ross McCarthy playing a free role to gowhere he liked picked up a lot of possession in the opening halfand on a break up the field kicked a super point to get Youghalgoing. Tragedy then struck when a long ball floated all the way tothe back of the Youghal net and the lads looked in trouble. Onanother break mid way through the first half, good work fromDavid O'Mahony on the right saw him round his marker and drivea ball across the box for the flying Stephen Sheehan to bury theball to the back of the Carberry net. Youghal followed this with apointed free from the boot of Ross McCarthy again, and closed outthe half looking the more likely. Carberry could not get to gripswith the wind at their backs and ball after ball was kicked out ofplay. Thehalf time score read 1-4 to 1-2 to the visitors and feelingswere that this should be close enough for Youghal to overcome inthe second half.

The second half started much like the first with Youghal cuttingthe Carberry defence to ribbons and were back level within twoattacks with the pick of the scores from Cillian Ansbro who cut infrom the wing and from a very tight angle and under pressure man-aged to find the target. Youghal gained the lead with a superb pointfrom Aaron O'Connor which was followed by another from AaronDaly from all of 45 yards out. Cillian Ansbro again found hisrange driving straight through the middle and pointing to leaveYoughal 3 up going into the last 15 minutes and looking the more

likely. Carberry to their creditbattled hard against the odds andalmost goaled with only minutesleft on the clock and Youghalwere having some difficultyclearing the ball. When they didhowever they always lookeddangerous and when Aaron Dalysent a long ball into the boxeveryone missed it including theCarberry Keeper and the ballnestled in the corner of the net tobreak the hearts of the visitorsand send the large crowd wild inthe knowledge that the cup wasstaying in Youghal. The finalwhistle saw great scenes of jubi-lation from all concerned and thelarge Youghal contingent. AaronDaly accepted the Cup on behalfof his team mates and the lads huddled up and sang "up theYoughal boys" to the delight of the assembled crowd. Agreat sea-son for the lads and their mentors with a league final still to playand well done to all involved. Football in Youghal is firmly backon the map.WEEKEND OF FESTIVITIES

Youghal Utd. 3 - 1 Richmond.Youghal United U-12s moved into third place in the table afterthis win against Richmond. This was a terrific encounter with bothdefences very strong limiting both strike forces to a handful ofchances. Youghal started brightly and two weaving runs by HollyTwomey almost paid off but the Richmond centre-half gave theYoughal striker close attention. The number nine was is typicalform and a constant menace to Richmond. However, the visitorstook the lead when a long ball through the middle allowed theRichmond to latch onto the ball and slot it past StephanieFitzgerald. Youghal responded well and with the visitors underpressure in their own area the ball fell to Lynda Galvin who strucka strong shot into the corner to give Youghal a well deservedequaliser. It was Lynda’s second goal of the season and she is play-ing better in every game. Confidence was now restored and it wasinevitable that Holly Twomey would turn the game in Youghal’sfavour. With Richmond high up on the halfway line they werecaught by the striker’s pace. A through ball was beautifullytouched on by Amy Benaim and Holly was sent clear. Her finishwas coolness personified. As the keeper advanced Holly slottedthe ball between her legs and turned to celebrate before the ballhad crossed the line. The prolific striker now has eight goals infour games. Richmond began the second half determined to drawlevel. The pressure brought the best out of the Youghal defence.

Stephanie Fitzgerald was called into action several times and thekeeper grew more confident as the half went on with some greathandling and clearances. Both Catriona Savage and Zoe Gogginwere outstanding in their defensive duties in keeping Richmondout. For long periods it looked like Richmond would secure adraw. Aoife O’ Sullivan, Lynda Galvin and Amy Benaim workedextremly hard in midfield and all Youghal required was one break-through. That moment came with about 10 minutes remaining. ZoeGoggin defended brilliantly before breaking into left midfield.Holly Twomey moved into space on the flank and Zoe’s throughball found her breaking free. The Richmond keeper advanced out-side her area but Holly went around her with a gorgeous swervebefore hitting a great ball across the area. With a single Richmonddefender chasing back to prevent the ball crossing the line it was arace between her and Zoe who had kept running forward. Zoe beatthe defender for pace and struck the ball confidently into the cor-ner to seal the win. Everyone put ingreat performances to win this tough contest and Youghal are nowtwo points off the top spot with a game in hand. Best performerswere Holly Twomey, Stephanie Fitzgerald, Zoe Goggin, AmyBenaim, Aoife O’ Sullivan, Lynda Galvin and Catriona Savage.

Aura helping people fightthe recession blues

People looking for a way to keep themselves motivated and posi-tive in the face of these tough recessionary times need look no fur-ther than Aura Youghal Leisure Centre. In recognition of the increased financial strains that many peopleare now experiencing Aura Youghal have introduced a number ofmembership offers to allow people to maintain their fitness rou-tines at a price they can afford. “People are naturally more price conscious during a recession andwe are committed to ensuring that anyone who wants to keep uptheir exercise routine can continue do so at an affordable price,”explained Tracy Kenneally, Operations Manager at Aura YoughalLeisure Centre. The recent ‘99’ special membership offer is proving to be a hugesuccess and the initiative has generated much positive feedback.“We would like to encourage people who want to start exercisingto become a member so anyone who signs up for 99 days member-ship will only have to pay €99. This price includes free healthscreening and fitness assessment,” Tracy added. The centre has also introduced a new initiative which allows allmembers visiting its gym and pool facilities to bring one friend forfree on each Friday during November and this offer will now beextended to December. “We see no reason why exercising with friends can not become thenew alternative to coffee mornings or a night out at the pub. It ishealthier, it is fun and it is cheaper all round and we have receiveda great response since we launched this initiative at the start of themonth,” Tracy continued.“At Aura we understand that people are finding it increasingly dif-ficult to keep up their health and fitness routines. In order toencourage people to stay positive and active we have introduced anumber of membership offers which allow people to work out at acost they can afford,” explained Tracy. “Everybody knows the importance of exercise. A healthy body isa healthy mind and staying positive and motivated about allaspects of your life should be the top of the agenda for everyone”explained Tracy. Further information about the special membership offers takingplace Aura Youghal is available by contacting reception at 02191614.

STATEMENT BY COUNCILLOR DONIE DALYLabour Councillor for Youghal - Friday, 20th November 2009

The indication by Health Minister Mary Harney that theGovernment is thinking of slapping a charge on patients for everyitem they receive under the GMS scheme is a clear indication thatthey are determined to ensure that those who can least afford it,will bear the greatest burden when it comes to resolving the crisisin our public finances.Labour accepts that there is a massive problem that needs to beaddressed and that a budgetary gap of €4bn will have to be closed

this year, but we do not accept that those who are least well off, such as people who are on the GMS scheme, should be forced toshoulder the burden. The best way to make savings is the greater use of generic, nonbranded drugs which are far cheaper and will avoid targeting theleast well off. A charge such as the one suggested by the Minister today, willsimply mean that those on the lowest incomes will be singled outand forced to pay what amounts to yet another stealth tax. Labour believes that any additional revenue raising measure to beincluded in the forthcoming budget should be focused on thosewho can most afford to pay. For starters, we believe that thereshould be a third rate of tax for those on earnings of over€100,000, a proposal that the Government appears to have dis-missed out of hand. For more information, contact Cllr. Donie Daly (086) 8103886
