It is my considerable pleasure to welcome you to the United States Virgin Islands.

The residents of our Islands take genuine pride in the beauty of our land and sea and

in the diversity of our people. We thank you for choosing to visit the Virgin Islands.

I hope that you will return again and again, thereby getting to know each of our

    unique and wonder-filled islands.

The American flag flies over four main islands, each different in special ways, all

sharing a common destiny. On the "big island" of St. Croix we invite you to discover

our historic towns, estates and heritage trails. St. Thomas has made its name known

around the world as a trading and shopping port for centuries. St. John and Water Island each retain much of the calm

and quiet of by-gone times. And everywhere, white sands, blue skies and turquoise seas invite you to swim, sail, dive, fish

... and relax. I urge you to try our rums, visit our restaurants, dance to our music and meet our people.

Please enjoy our island home and our hospitality. Welcome!

Welcome to the United States Virgin Islands! St. Croix, St. John and

St. Thomas are each distinguished by unique and appealing personalities.

I invite you to discover the distinct and varied offerings of each of our islands.

Home to superb dining, an exciting nightlife and duty-free shopping,

St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan of our three islands. Our capital,

Charlotte Amalie, is the most visited port in the Caribbean and boasts one

of the most magnificent harbors in the world. Whether soaking up the sun on

one of St. Thomas many beautiful beaches, shopping along the downtown

waterfront, or visiting island attractions, you will find plenty to fill your days

    and nights on the island.

If it is unspoiled beaches and a tranquil atmosphere you are seeking, then look no further than St. John. Enjoy

snorkeling in the crystal blue water, or just relax on one of the world-renowned pristine beaches. Two-thirds

of the island is a National Park, established in the 1950s with land donated by American financier Laurance

Rockefeller. Hike the trails or camp out under the stars in St. Johns lush, untainted environment.

Take some time to visit St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where you can experience a mix of

rich heritage and culture with exciting land and sea activities. Pastel buildings, historic fortresses and majestic

churches can be seen in the charming towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted, while offshore some of the best

scuba diving sites in the world await your exploration.

While each of the islands has its own personality, their proximity makes island hopping quick and easy.

Whatever way you choose to spend your vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, it is sure to be memorable.

    Enjoy your stay!

    Sincerely,

    Beverly Nicholson-Doty

Federal and state partners of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security hope that you have enjoyed your stay in the Virgin Islands. As you leave, keep in mind the following advice to help make your trip through the airport as efficient and comfortable as possible:

ARRIVE ON TIME. Remember to leave adequate time to check baggage and move through security. Security measures in the Virgin Islands are unique. All passengers and crew trav-eling from the U.S. Virgin Islands to the continental United States and Puerto Rico must be cleared by officers of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to determine admissi-bility to the United States. Each individual must complete the CBP Declaration Form 6059B. Check with airlines for recom-mended arrival time.

PACK SMART. Pack an organized carry-on bag using layers a layer of clothes, then electronics, more clothes, and then any heavier items. Innocent items can actually appear to be potential threats in an X-ray image, simply by the way they are packed.

PAY ATTENTION TO 3-1-1 RULE. Liquids, gels, and aero-sols are permitted in 3- ounce containers, placed in a 1-quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag, one bag per traveler. If you can pour it, pump it, squeeze it, spread it, smear it, spray it, or spill it, its subject to these limits. Tamarind and cherry stews are considered liquids and gels. Breast milk and medically neces-sary liquids like baby formula and insulin are permitted, but must be declared to a security officer at the checkpoint before they go through the x-ray machine.

DRESS THE PART. Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) have to resolve any anomaly detected at the checkpoint. TSA strongly recommends removing ALL items from pockets, as well as certain accessories, including wallet, belt, bulky jewelry, money, keys, and cell phone. Place those items into your carry-on bags. Also please remove shoes before entering the screening technology and put them directly on the belt. Removing all of these items will reduce the chance of needing additional screening.

HAVE THE FOLLOWING READY. Passengers should be prepared to present their own boarding pass and a valid federal or state issued government ID, such as a valid drivers license or passport with your name as it appears on your boarding pass. You will have to show these items twice. Once to CBP and the second time to TSA security personnel.

RISK BASED SECURITY. Passengers 12 and younger can now leave their shoes on during security screening. Passengers 75 and older will undergo similar modified screen-

ing procedures to those 12 and under and will be able to leave on their shoes and a light jacket or outer wear when passing through security. Travelers and families of passengers with disabilities or medical conditions may call the TSA Cares helpline toll free at 855-787-2227, 72 hours prior to traveling with any questions about screening policies, procedures and what to expect at the security checkpoint.

FOR CHECKED BAGS. Lock your suitcase with a TSA-approved lock and be sure not to pack any hazardous materi-als. Liquids and gels greater than 3 ounces - such as duty free purchases (including alcohol, perfume and lotion) - purchased before entering the checkpoint, should be placed in checked baggage.

FISH AND WILDLIFE. In order to keep our islands beauti-ful, we must protect our natural resources. The VI code pro-hibits the taking, catching, possessing, transporting or export-ing of indigenous species. The prohibition also includes the removal of coral, sea shells, sand, and other native species, flora and fauna. Commercially caught legal size conch and whelk are the only shells that can be removed from the ter-ritory. Some of the items may also be considered prohibited based on TSA security protocol.

Federal and state partners of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security remind travelers to be vigilant by report-ing suspicious activity to local law enforcement. If you see something, say something. The traveling public plays an important role in security.

The U.S Territories (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the British Virgin Is-lands (to the north and east) are among the most beautiful geographical areas in the world, blessed with powdery beach-es and sun drenched weather. The islands lie in the path of soft trade-winds blowing direct from Portugal. Which perhaps accounts for the fact that Santa Cruz was among the first islands to be sighted by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage west-ward. He then sailed northeast, pass-ing St Thomas, St John and Tortola and called them collectively Las Virgenes.

After his visit, the islands went back to sleep for more than a hundred and fifty years. They woke to find the flag of Den-mark planted on St. Thomas, the French Tricolor on St. Croix and the Union Jack flapping over Tortola (where it still flies). The Arawak Indian population had dis-appeared. Denmark later claimed St. John, bought St. Croix and built the Danish West Indies into thriving sugar cane and trading islands. Slaves were imported early to work the growing number of sugar plantations. The islands were also used as a base for re-shipment of slaves to other areas.

After the Danish abolished slavery in 1848, planters began to abandon their estates and the population and econo-my dwindled. Threatened by German expansion dur-ing World War I, the U.S. bought the Danish West Indies (now the American Virgin Islands) on March 31, 1917. Even then the islands were expensive real es-tate almost $300 an acre. In 1927, residents were granted U.S. citizenship. Until 1931, the islands were administered by the U.S. Navy. Then they were placed under the Depart-ment of the Interior with a Governor appointed by the President. A locally elected legislature (15 members from all three islands) has operated since 1852 but it wasnt until 1970 that is-landers could vote for their own Gov-ernor, and in 1972 a delegate to the U.S Congress. Though U.S. citizens, Virgin Island residents have no vote in national elections. Nor does the Virgin Islands' representative in Washington have a vote on the floor of the house.

SERGEANT MAJORDivers in the Caribbean will commonly find multiple species of schooling fish. These are Sergeant Majors.

SQUIRRELFISHSquirrelfish are nocturnal, and they use their big, sensitive eyes to hunt for prey in minimal light. These night owls are typically found loafing around in dark areas of the reef during the day.

All beaches in the Virgin Islands are open to the public. A few have dressing facilities and showers Coki (at

Coral World) and Magens Bay on St. Thomas; Cinnamon and Trunk Bay on St. John. Some hotel beaches

have beach chair/umbrella rentals and restaurant/bars nearby, such as Frenchmans Reef Morningstar Beach

and Sapphire Beach. It is advisable to leave valuables at your hotel unless you have a plastic container to take

them along on your swim or snorkeling while at the beach. Avoid the mid-day sun. Start out with a 20 minute

exposure with suntan lotion on your rst few days. Even sitting in the shade can result in sunburn.

    1. COKI BEACHNoted for its tranquil turquoise waters, Coki Beach has great snorkeling and scuba diving right off the beach. Take your rst scuba lesson from one of the dive shops on the beach. You will nd hair braiders, chair rentals, beach waiters serving drinks and vendors selling t-shirts, sunblock, art work, bags, wrap skirts, towels and more! If you want to see the marine life without getting wet, visit Coral World right next door.

    2. MAGENS BAY BEACHNamed one of the worlds most beautiful beaches, Magens Bay, the largest beach on St. Thomas, of-fers changing rooms, bathrooms and showers. The mile long beach is very calm with no waves, unless posted that there is surf present. A water sports operation rents paddle boats, kayaks and sunsh. There is a $5 per person entrance fee to this public beach. This beach can be very crowded on heavy cruise ship days.

    3. MORNINGSTAR BEACHThis is the main beach for the Mariotts Frenchmans Reef and Morningstar Resorts so you will nd lots

    Beachesst. thomas

of hotel guests there and lots of things to support guest lounging and comfort. The watersports operation offers paddleboats, kayaks, sailboats, jet skis and more. Chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear and oats are available to rent from the hotel. A beachside restaurant and bar lies conveniently at waters edge.

    4. SAPPHIRE BEACHWindsurng lessons, snorkeling, beach chairs and umbrella rentals are just some of the available amenities. Water is for the most part calm and the snorkeling is quite good to either side of the beach. A great beach for learning windsurng as most the wind blows in towards the beach making the return sail a breeze!

    5. LINDQUIST BEACHLocated on the East End of St Thomas charges an entrance fee ($3). It is a very natural beach lined along the shore with indigenous plants and trees with no development within sight. Very popular with the locals. Long, ne, white, sand beach with calm, pristine, crystal blue water. A beautiful Carib-bean beach!

Nauti Nymph is one of the most established (if not THE most estab-lished) powerboat com-panies on St. Thomas. Since 1984 the compa-ny has served St Thom-as and St John. The business has survived two major hurricanes (Hugo in 1989 and Mari-lyn in 1995). They were up and running within 2-3 days after Hurricane Marilyn and spent much of the next few weeks helping the island with its recovery effort.

The Nauti Nymph fleet of boats is turned over regularly and the current fleet features 2012, 2013 and 2015 models. Nauti Nymph has Fountains and Everglades which are among the most desirable brands in the industry. Equipped with fuel efficient Yamaha or Evinrude engines, built in ice chests, showers, bimini tops and more, they of-fer a reliable and comfortable ride.

In 2001 it became obvious that there was a need for upscale excur-sions with day trips to carefully selected destinations in the British and US Vir-gin Islands. Thus Magic Moments was

he Virgin Islands hosts some of the fin-est marine life in the Caribbean. Acres of coral reefs make up an ecosystem that supports a large variety of sea creatures and under water plants. Snorkelers can enjoy a leisurely swim in the crystal clear waters, diving through fantastic reefs to witness tropical marine life. St. Thomas

and St John host a variety of snorkeling locations and famous underwater trails. Both novice and expert snorkel-ers will enjoy the passages through and over the reefs.

Fins, a Mask and a SnorkelThe big question for many is should I buy or rent snor-

kel gear? If you think that you will be snorkeling every day of your visit then it might make sense to purchase a set from either the local dive shops or K-Mart. If you are only planning to snorkel for one day then just rent. Important when either buy- ing a mask or renting is to make sure that it fits properly. Hold the mask up to your face without using the strap and inhale through your nose until you have created a vacuum. If the mask stays attached to your face and no air leaks out then it is a good fit. Make sure your fins fit comfortably. They dont need to be super tight but should fit snugly.

Snorkels are one-size-fits-all. You can rent snorkel gear at the various snorkel beaches mentioned below. Most day sails and water sport tours operators will supply you with snorkel gear as part of their tour.

Some Good AdviceIf you want to identify the different coral and

fish species you can purchase one of the plastic under-water guide cards. They come with a band so you can attach it to your wrist. And if you want to take a photo underwater then get yourself an inexpensive underwater camera or a more expensive plastic underwater housing for your digital camera.

Lather yourself up from head to toe with sunscreen (dont forget bald heads!). Wear a tee shirt to protect your back from the sun and a cap to protect your scalp. It is amazing how fast the tropical sun can burn you and wreck your vacation. Snorkel with a buddy never alone. Please try not to stand on the coral

as it is very fragile and some has already been stressed by a coral bleaching disease which has been invading our waters. Keep

an eye out for sea urchins. If you step on one and it will hurt but they arent poisonous.

Rocky coast lines and coral reefs near shore offer great opportunities to snorkel from beaches. Snorkeling from

shore can be done without a guide.

Snorkeling from St. Thomas Beaches:COKI POINT BEACH - On the north shore of St. Thomas right next to Coral World, Coki Point offers fantastic year-round snorkeling. Tons of fish hang around the coral areas adjacent to Coral World. Rent your snorkel equipment from the Coki Beach Dive Club at Coral World.

SAPPHIRE BEACH located on the East End of St. Thomas, this picturesque shoreline has shallow reef view-ing along both sides of the beach.

SECRET HARBOR Rent your equipment from the Aqua Adventure Dive Shop and have a nice protected snorkel and then enjoy lunch at the Secret Harbor Hotels beach restaurant and bar.

From St. John Beaches:LEINSTER BAY - Easily accessible Leinster Bay, on the northern shore of St. John, offers calm, clear, un-crowded waters teeming with sea life.

HAULOVER BAY - A favorite with locals, this small bay is rougher than Leinster and is often deserted. The snorkel-ing, however, is dramatic, with ledges, walls, nooks, and sandy areas set close together.

TRUNK BAY - The self-guided, 675-foot-long snorkeling trail has large underwater signs that identify species of coral and other marine life. Above water, the beach facili-ties offer freshwater showers, changing rooms, equipment rentals, and lifeguards making snorkeling downright con-venient. Very crowded on cruise ship days.

By Boat Charter and Day Sail

Charters for half or full day trips can take you out to some of the less accessible and unique snorkeling areas. These tours will sail or motor to protected marine areas in the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John. Day charters often include lunch, drinks, and snorkeling gear.

    Breathing Observation Bubble

This is an underwater scooter complete with a breath-ing and observation bubble attached to an air supply. Ride along while observing the beautiful of marine life. Available to anyone from ten years and up and doesnt require experience. (See B.O.S.S. ad on page 32).

Rocky coast lines and coral reefs near shore offer great opportunities to snorkel from beaches. Snorkeling from shore can be done without a guide.
