Civic League awarded by Norfolk Education Foundation for helping Suburban Park Suburban Acres Civic League was the big winner in the Norfolk Education Foundation’s 2011 A-Plus Community Partner Awards and was presented with the Summa cum Laude award the evening of November 2nd at the foundation’s Together in Education (TIE) awards gala. The community partner award program was established in 2009 by the Norfolk Education Foundation and Norfolk Public Schools to recognize those members of the Hampton Roads community who have forged meaningful partnerships within schools here in Norfolk. SACL is being honored for its support of the Suburban Park Elementary School Partnership. The Summa cum Laude award is one of six awards in the program, and recognizes a partnership that has been in existence for five years or more and demonstrates school-wide impact, commitment, and sustainability. The civic league was nominated by Suburban Park Elementary School staff for its work promoting volunteer opportunities at the school, supporting the school uniform clothes closet, and the Angel Tree program. The nomination credited the league for providing Thanksgiving holiday meals for more than 500 families through donations and food drives over the past five years. Civic League President Tim Fox accepted the award on behalf of the neighborhood, and said he is inspired by neighborhood Pillars, like Mr. Dan Bigelli. During his acceptance comments Fox said that when the award was announced, “All I could hear in my head was Dan Bigelli’s testimony of the community development that occurred here in Suburban Acres decades ago as it converted from farm land into the community we now know and love.“ Fox recalled Bigelli saying “…And then it was our wives who staffed the school”, referencing the construction of Suburban Park Elementary. Other award categories in the A-Plus Community Partner awards are Rookie Achievement, Innovation, Collaboration, Tutoring, and Mentoring. Captain Charles Melcher accepted the Innovation and Rookie Achievement Awards on behalf of Naval Support Activity Norfolk for NSA’s efforts with Camp Allen Elementary and Northside Middle School. NSA sailors have also assisted with projects at Suburban Park. The award will be on display and Tim Fox will provide additional details at the November 14th civic league meeting.

Litter prevention partnership between civic league, Archers Green detailed at October meeting Suburban Acres residents were briefed on the neighborhood’s Litter Prevention Partnership with the Archer’s Green apartment community at the October 10th civic league meeting by Steve Collins. Collins, the civic league’s Litter Prevention Team Coordinator coordinated an agreement between the civic league Board of Directors and property manager Jennifer Hewett, which is outlined in an agreement document. The City of Norfolk also has responsibilities under the agreement. The report highlights improperly disposed trash, sometimes including furniture and petroleum products, in the dumpster areas and the periphery of the Archer’s Green property. Often this trash is washed, blown, or dragged by animals to the sensitive marsh area that forms the headwaters of the Lafayette River. The goal of the partnership is a positive working relationship between the corporate property owner and the neighborhood, and the development and adherence to a coordinated plan that provides a solution to the trash issue. Archer’s Green responsibilities under the plan include providing signage and litter prevention education to residents, daily

inspections of dumpster areas and cleanup of chronic litter are-as, and coordination with the civic league for community clean-ups. The civic league’s responsibilities include assistance with surge clean up, monitoring, and publicity and interaction forums like civic league meetings, and the newsletter and website. Inclusion of the apartment community in the neighborhood’s Environmen-tal Awards for Recycling in Norfolk Neighborhoods (EARNN) projects is also specified in the report. The role of Norfolk is enforcement and alternative solution to environmental concerns, as well as communicating environmen-tal-related opportunities and administering the EARNN program. Collins called Archer’s Green “an exceptional corporate neigh-bor.” Hewett was gracious in her support of the partnership, highlight-ed remodeling projects underway, and announced recent staff and management changes at the complex. Hewett was compli-mented by many in attendance on this year’s beautiful landscap-ing at Archer’s Green.

-The Suburban Grant Will Help River Star Homeowners with Eco-Friendly Lawn Care The Elizabeth River Project has a new $300,000 grant that will provide yard care help to homeowners within the Lafayette River

watershed who have joined the River Star Homes program. This two-year federal grant from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will expand the program by providing cost share for rain barrels, rain gar-dens, "vegetated buffers," lawn makeovers to reduce fertilizer use, native landscaping, and more. Becoming a River Star Home is free – any homeowner within the Lafa-yette watershed can join, not just those along the water. Go to www.RiverStarHomes.org or call 399-7487 to join. River Star Home participants will also get tips on being good environ-mental stewards and invitations to participate in lots of fun and educa-tional outdoor activities. And, par-ticipants will get one of the beautiful blue River Star Home yard flags that are popping up all over our area. Come on – become one of the 600 and growing River Star Homes!

Suburban Park Elementary again needs community support for rewards, volunteer programs By Karen Mayne and Kevin Janney Suburban Park Elementary School is again participating in re-ward programs that provide financial support for the school. The only difference this year is that there will not be boxes set up in the lobby, so just take your donations into the front office (if you visit the school during the day), or bring to the civic league meetings—we will have drop boxes at the sign in table . According to Claudette Dalmida, Suburban Park’s parent laison, last year’s rewards collection program was a wild success, and the civic league was a big contributor of Box Tops, Labels for Education and Farm Fresh receipts. “Last year was real successful. We were able to purchase sup-plies students can use,” Dalmida said as she showed me glue and other supplies in the room where we met. Funds from re-wards programs also allowed the school to purchase a stapling machine, a hole punch machine, a commercial coffee maker for the parent center, and incentive prizes for parent workshops (parents earn points for attending workshops at the school).

We all shop for groceries, sometimes two or three times a week –- or more. Now turn those shopping trip into easy cash for your school, and encourage friends to do the same! Just look for the Box Tops logo on hundreds of products like Cheerios®, Hamburger

Helper® and Kleenex®, in almost every aisle of the store. All you need to do is clip and send them to your school’s Box Tops coordinator —- each one is worth 10¢ for your school.

The following stores and products are part of this financial assistance program: Shop at Farm Fresh and turn in the bottom of your receipts. Shop at Kroger and link your store card to Suburban Park. Shop at Food Lion and link your store card to Suburban

Park. Save Box Tops 4 Education products. Go to

www.BoxTops4Education.com for a list of products. Save Labels for Education. Go to

www.LabelsForEducation.com for a list of products. Turn in empty ink cartridges from your printer for recycling. In other school news Dalmida wanted to send out a big thank you to Claudia Carey and Georgia Rosenberg for their support as classroom and reading program volunteers. Dalmida called them “super volunteers.” The school is also pushing a reading buddy program, and needs volunteers or groups to come to the school on Wednesdays to read with the children. Dalmida also thanked Norfolk Christian School, who’s students helped cleanup an area for a peace garden in the rear of the school. The peace garden now needs landscaping.

For more than 38 years, Labels for Education has been awarding free educational equipment to schools in exchange for proofs of purchase from the Campbell family of brands. Clip and save UPCs and beverage caps from participating products. Give the UPCs and beverage caps to your school’s coordinator- when the whole school participates, the points really add up! Your school can redeem Labels for Education points for FREE educational resources! Clip labels/proofs of purchase from Bic, Campbell’s, Post, Pepperidge Farm, Pace, Prego, Franco-American, Swanson, V-8, and Wolfgang Puck products. You can sign up for “My School” at www.labelsforeducation.com to get connected with your school community and coordinator.

The Kroger Plus Card rewards card helps your school earn points toward needed educational awards. Each time registered supporters shop at a

Kroger store using their Kroger Plus Card they earn points for their school. Point accrual began September 12th, and ends April 13, 2012. Shoppers must link their Kroger Plus Card to a school: have the cashier scan this bar code the next time you shop at Kroger to link your Kroger rewards card to Suburban Park Elementary School.

Food Lion MVP Rewards

Enroll by linking your MVP Card(s) to your school and/or charity of choice and then every time you shop and present your MVP Card, the amount you spend on qualified items is automati-cally credited to the local school. You need to link your MVP card to Suburban Park at www.foodlionmvprewards.com or get help linking your card at the school or Food Lion.

Medians spruced up, litter collected Several Suburban Acres neighbors met at Tinee Giant on Octo-ber 15th at 8:30 am to spruce up the Thole Street medians. Ten neighborhood volunteers spent about an hour and a half weed-ing the traffic-calming Thole Street medians and picking up litter. Twelve large bags of weeds and trash was collected by the group. This was the neighborhood’s second cleanup (of 4 required to earn EARNN points this year) this EARNN cycle. Suburban Acres Civic League sponsors the four medians on Thole Street in the city’s Adopt-a-Spot litter prevention program.

-The Suburban Norfolk plans community meetings; seeks input for draft general plan The City is asking Norfolk residents to weigh in on the City's next General Plan. Through community meetings, an online forum, Facebook and other vehicles, the City will be asking for citizen input in creating “plaNorfolk 2030”, the new City of Nor-folk General Plan. The plan is about what the City of Norfolk will look like in 20 years. Norfolk today is, in large part, determined by the policies and actions in previous plans. MacArthur Center, light rail, East Beach, Broad Creek, Norfolk Wellness and Fitness Center, res-toration of wetlands and dune protection were all envisioned in previous plans, as were many other initiatives in the city. Plan-ning guides how and when the City will fund projects, where private sector development will be encouraged, and where pub-lic infrastructure, such as recreation centers, bike paths, and

libraries will be placed. It guides zoning, land use and transpor-tation decisions. Like all plans, PlaNorfolk 2030 will be updated as conditions change. But the decisions contained in this general plan will guide the City for the next two decades. The City has developed a draft plan – based on previous plans and current and projected conditions. The City is asking for resi-dents’ input to help define the vision of Norfolk 2030 and the tools needed to be put in place today to help accomplish the plan. The draft plan as well as draft land use maps can be viewed on the City’s web site at www.norfolk.gov. Late fall is a good time to put your yard “away” for the winter. Doing these chores before the busy holiday season will ensure that you have a nice looking and safe property throughout the winter and into the spring. The cool weather of November makes tackling these projects a little easier. We all like to look at the well maintained yards of our neighborhood – which is one of the reasons we love living in Suburban Acres. Flora the Mermaid, our civic league mascot, graces a yard each month to honor someone who does an especially good job of keeping a beautiful yard. Nicely landscaped yards help maintain the appearance of our neighborhood, improve security, and keep home values up. In fact, studies show that nice landscaping can increase the value of a home when it comes time to sell. Here are some things to do to get your yard and house ready for the winter: Prune back overgrown shrubs around doors and windows. Light pruning of bushes too close to the house or blocking windows will improve security and give a tidy, lived in look to your house during the dark days of winter. Edge the grass along sidewalks. This will prevent tripping hazards for neighbors and guests (and our postal carriers), and will make it easier to clear snow during the winter. Property owners are responsible for maintaining the sidewalk and grassy area between the sidewalk and the street in front of their property. If street trees have low limbs that are dangerous to walkers or block views at stop signs, the City is responsible for fixing these problems. Call the Norfolk Cares Assistance Center at 757-664-6510 (or use their on-line reporting form at www.Norfolk.gov/311CallCenter) to report the problem. You can also call the Cares Center to report sidewalk cracks and tree root lifting or pothole problems. Mulch fallen leaves back into the grass with your lawn mower for a free fertilizer boost. Alternatively, you can bag leaves with your lawn mower attachment to use as mulch in flower beds or add to your compost pile. Never put leaves in the street – the leaves will clog storm drains, causing street flooding and polluting the Lafayette River. Clean leaves and pine straw out of gutters and off roofs. With winter rains approaching, free flowing gutters will ensure no rainwater back-ups, which could lead to leaks around your lower roof and potential ice dam problems in freezing weather. Heavy accumulations of pine straw can weigh down roofs and contribute to roof leaks. Caulk and paint windows, doors, and trim. This will stop air leaks into the house and will ensure that wood trim remains solid and strong and doesn’t rot. While many of us can do these chores ourselves, other folks may not have the time or ability to tackle them. What to do? Often, neighborhood teens are looking for odd jobs and may be able to do these projects for you. Or ask neighbors who they use for their lawn care service. Some churches, military units, and social organizations have programs to help out members with handyman services.
