Brussels sprouts with bacon. Thanksgiving is the holiday of sanctioned indulgence, but strategic splurging can keep your budget — and your time — under control.

P ulling together the perfectThanksgiving dinner all comesdown to balance. It’s a matter ofknowingwhen to save, andwhen

to spend. And that rule applies as muchtomoney as to time and energy.Because the better you understand

where time in the kitchen can pay seri-ous dividends — versus just leaving youfrustrated and disappointed— the easierit is for you to decide which parts of thebigmeal should get your time, andwhichshould get your cash.To help you sort it all out, I’ve listed

my Top 12 Thanksgiving Trouble Spots, along with my take on where your timeandmoney are best spent.

THE TURKEYHowoftendoyou roast a turkey?Once,

maybe twice a year? And you’re likely tospend four or more hours slaving overthe sucker, right? So why not splurge ona local, organic, heirloom bird raised byfree-spiritedworkers on a collective?Thebird, after all, is the centerpiece of themeal. Make it a good one.

THE BRINEIt’s all about moisture. And brining is

worth your time. Because a moist birdmakes for a delicious dinner. You coulddo a basic brine, which is a 1:1 ratio ofkosher salt and sugar dissolved in water.Plunk the bird in that for 8 to 72 hoursand you’re good to go. But anyone can doa basic brine. What you want to do is invest a few

extra minutes and a couple extra dollarsto make a sensational brine. Using thesame 1:1 ratio, you’re going to dissolve ko-sher salt and brown sugar in gently sim-mering apple cider seasoned with blackpepper and fresh rosemary. Add a tonof ice to cool it down, then resume yourpoultry plunking.

THE ROASTDon’t just pop the bird in the

oven. Lube it up with as much but-ter as you can, both under and overthe skin. And while you’re at it, jamsome fresh herbs under the skin, then

pop some lemons and fresh rosemaryinto the cavity. (Don’t fret over need-ing room for the stuffing. We’ll getto that in a moment.) This all takesa few extra minutes, but it’s wellworth it.

THE BASTEDo it. Butdon’t do itmore thanevery 30

minutes. Every time you open that ovendoor, all the heat rushes out. Baste morethan every half hour or so and your birdwon’t be done until Christmas.

THE MASHED POTATOESDrypotatoes are better potatoes. So af-

ter you boil them, spend a few extramin-utes spreading them on a baking sheet.Pop the potatoes in the oven at about 350F for 10 minutes. After the potatoes aredried out, use a ricer to get just the righttexture. Then loadon thebutter andmilk.Spare the fat, spoil the potatoes.

THE SALADWaste of time. Waste of money. Don’t

do it. Nobody wants it. Nobody eats it.Thanksgiving is about carbs and fat. Bevirtuous the next day.

THE STUFFINGDon’t complicate your life — or your

bird — by stuffing your stuffing. Thisis why casserole dishes were invented. But do spend a little extra to use real

bread (not bagged stuffing). Get goodbread, let it go stale, cut it into cubes, then toast it in the oven. And when youassemble the stuffing, get some driedfruit in there, which offers a nice con-trast of texture and flavor. Dried cher-ries, cranberries and apricots are allexcellent choices. And tons of onions, sage and celery are nice counterpointsto the fruit. Don’t forget an egg or twofor structure.

WHERE TO SAVE, WHERE TO SPENDON THANKSGIVINGBy J.M. Hirsch Associated Press

THE CRANBERRY SAUCEJust make it. It’s 5 minutes out of your

life and it will make such a difference atthe table. Use the recipe on the bag, butadd as many other varieties of dried andfresh fruit as you can handle.

THE ORANGE VEGGIESWe’re talking sweet potatoes and

butternut squash. Leave the mash-ing for the white potatoes. Instead, cutthe orange ones into cubes, dust themwith cornstarch, a sprinkle of oil andwhatever seasonings get you going, then roast them until lightly brownedand tender.

THE GREEN VEGGIESWhen in doubt, add bacon. Green

beans. Brussels sprouts. Whatever. Ba-con makes them better. Money spent onbacon is money very well spent.

THE PIEUnless you’ve recently won a bake-

off, here’s another place to spendmoney instead of time. A good bakerwill make your efforts taste like some-thing from 7-11. Instead, spend yourtime making fresh whipped cream us-ing really good heavy cream spikedwith fresh vanilla bean and a bit ofpowdered sugar. And the same creamcan be piled onto the coffee you servewith dessert.

Store-bought rollswith homemade but-ter. hanksgiving isthe holiday of sanc-tioned indulgence, but that doesn’t meanthe meal has to breakthe bank. Strategicsplurging can keepyour budget — andyour time — undercontrol. nowing whichitems to go big on de-pends on your menu, your skills and yourfamily and friends.

{ the ROLLSUnless you are an

amazing baker, buyyour rolls. They’ll bebetter than whatmost amateurscan produce. Andyou won’t spendhours fighting withthe dough. Want ahomemade touch?Make the butter to gowith the rolls. It takes5 minutes and will bethe best butter you’veever eaten. Seriously.

{ the BUTTERDump a quart of heavy cream in a food

processor, then turn it on. Let it go for about 3 to 5minutes. First it will turn into whipped cream, thenthe buttermilk will break away from the fat. Oncethe fat (butter) is all clumped together, dumpedout the liquid. Place the butter in a bowl and kneadit to squeeze out more liquid. Once no more liquidcomes out, season it with kosher salt and eat it atroom temp. Best. Butter. Ever.

A little additionmakes big differencein potatoesBy Alison LadmanAssociated Press

Like onions, leeks develop a rich, savoryflavorwhen cooked slowly. Andwhen cookedthis way, theymake an excellent addition to acreamymound of mashed potatoes.Rather than caramelize the leeks, which re-

quires abitmorehandsoncooking, wedecidedto melt them. It’s actually a braise, but the re-sult is meltingly good. And braising requiresonly an occasional stir. The leeks are thinlysliced, then slowly simmered in broth or stockuntil extremely tender, then thewholemixtureis stirred into the potatoes. The easiestway to clean leeks is to cut them

up first. Trim off the ends, cut them in halflengthwise, then thinly slice them. Place theslices in a large bowl of cool water and tosswell, separating the layers, to rinse away anydirt. Allow the dirt to fall to the bottom of thebowl, thenuse a slotted spoon to scoopout thefloating leeks.

MELTED LEEKMASHED POTATOESStart to finish: 45 minutesServings: 8

3 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cutinto chunksSalt3 tablespoons unsalted butter3 cups thinly sliced and cleaned leeks1/2 cup chicken stock or broth1/2 cup half-and-half3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

■ Place the potatoes in a large stockpot. Addenough water to cover by 1 inch. Set over highheat and bring to a boil. Cook until tender, about20 minutes.■ While the potatoes cook, prepare the leeks. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, meltthe butter. Add the leeks and broth and cover.Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to maintainthe temperature and cook, stirring occasionally, until the leeks are extremely tender, about30 minutes.■ When the potatoes are cooked, drain andreturn to the pot. Add the half-and-half, thenmash until smooth. Season with salt, then stirin the melted leeks — along with any liquid in thepan — and the chives.

Thanksgivinggreenbeans twowaysBy Alison LadmanAssociated Press

Canwe all just agree that by 2013we shouldbe able todobetter bygreenbeans thandump-ing canned soup and fried onions all overthem? Surely, there is a better way.Actually, there are lots of betterways. Even

if all you do is crisp some chopped bacon in askillet, then pop fresh green beans in for a fewminutes of stir-frying, the end result will stillbe better (and probably more welcome at thetable). But that’s just the start. To help you get your green bean creativ-

ity flowing, we’ve given you a basic recipe for

cooking them, plus twowaysof finishing them— one with bacon and blue cheese, the otherwith honey-sweetened spicy coconut. But ifneither of those do it for you, use our base, then take thosebeans in anydirectionyou like.

GREEN BEANS TWO WAYSStart to finish: 20 minutesServings: 8

2 tablespoons olive oil3 cloves garlic, minced2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmedSalt and ground black pepper

For the bacon and blue cheese topping:1/2 cup crumbled cooked bacon1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese1/4 cup chopped scallions

For the sweet-and-spicy coconut topping:1/4 cup honey1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes1/2 cup toasted coconut flakes

■ In a large skillet over medium-high, heat the ol-ive oil. Add the garlic and saute for 2 minutes, oruntil softened. Add the green beans and sauteuntil just tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Season withsalt and pepper.■ Choose one of the two variations and gentlytoss all ingredients for either one together withthe green beans in the skillet.■ For the bacon and blue cheese variation:Nutrition information per serving: 110 calories;60 calories from fat (55 percent of total calo-ries); 7 g fat (2.5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 10mg cholesterol; 8 g carbohydrate; 4 g fiber; 3 gsugar; 4 g protein; 190 mg sodium.■ For the sweet-and-spicy coconut topping:Nutrition information per serving: 120 calories;50 calories from fat (42 percent of total calo-ries); 6 g fat (0 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 0mg cholesterol; 17 g carbohydrate; 4 g fiber; 12g sugar; 2 g protein; 60 mg sodium.

a bit. You just have to be selective. Start byleaving the turkey alone. Don’t get fancy. Justroast it straight up and delicious. Same goesfor the mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy.Nobodywants you changing those. The cran-berry sauce? Fair game. Turn it into a salsa.Add crazy dried fruits.Whatever.Ditto for thevegetables. Face it, people aren’t

eatingThanksgivingdinner for thevegetables, anyway. So do whatever moves you.The dinner rolls are another place you can

play around. For this recipe,we took a basic—and ridiculously easy— approach to monkeybread (pull-apart bread), and simply added theexotic flavor of dukkah, an Egyptian season-ing blendmade fromherbs, spices and groundnuts. It has a warm, savory flavor that workswell with Thanksgiving staples.

DUKKAH MONKEY ROLLSStart to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes (15 minutesactive)Servings: 12

1/4 cup sesame seeds1/2 cup hazelnuts, toasted1 tablespoon whole coriander seeds1 tablespoon cumin seeds1 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper1/2 cup fresh mint1/4 cup fresh marjoram16-ounce frozen white bread dough, thawed6 tablespoons butter, meltedCoat a muffin tin with cooking spray.

■ To make the dukkah, in a food processor, com-bine the sesame seeds, hazelnuts, coriander, cumin, salt, pepper, mint and marjoram. Pulseuntil well chopped and sandy in texture.■ Cut the bread dough into small pieces, aboutthe size of a marble. Place the dough pieces ina zip-close plastic bag. Add the melted butter, then close the bag and toss the mixture aroundinside the bag until everything is well coated. Addthe dukkah and toss again.■ Place about 1/2 cup of the coated breaddough pieces into each muffin well. Cover withplastic wrap and set aside in a warm place for30 minutes.■ Meanwhile, heat the oven to 400 F.After the dough has sat for 30 minutes, un-cover and bake until golden brown and cookedthrough, about 30 minutes. Cool in the pan untileasily handled, then remove from the muffinwells and serve warm.■ Nutrition information per serving: 210 calo-ries; 110 calories from fat (52 percent of totalcalories); 12 g fat (4 g saturated; 0 g trans fats);15 mg cholesterol; 20 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber;0 g sugar; 6 g protein; 380 mg sodium.

TartingupyourThanksgivingbutternut offeringBy J.M. HirschAssociated Press

Much as I love butternut squash — andfirmly believe it belongs on the Thanksgiv-ing table— I’ve grown boredwith the ways ittypically shows up.Too often, the squash is cut into chunks,

then either seasoned and roasted or steamedand mashed. And while both approachescan be delicious, they get tedious year afteryear. They also don’t do the squash justice.Face it, a bowl of mashed squash will alwaysbe a runner up to mashed potatoes. And ofthe many roasted dishes that land on thetable, squash isn’t the one most people willreach for.So I decided to reinvent the Thanksgiving

squash dish. I wanted something with a bit ofbackbone. Something that stoodout anddidn’tresemble every other — or any other — dishon the table. What I came up with is a simple, savory

squash tart. Not only is it easy tomake, it evencan be prepared ahead of time (saving valu-able oven space on the big day), then brieflyreheated just before serving.

SAVORY BUTTERNUT SQUASH TARTStart to finish: 45 minutes (15 minutes active)Servings: 8

9-inch prepared (rolled) pie crust1 3/4 pounds peeled and cubed (about 1/2-inchcubes) butternut squash3 eggs1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese2 tablespoons brown sugar1/2 teaspoon dried thyme1 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

■ Heat the oven to 350 F.■ Unroll the pie crust and set it over a 9-inchtart pan with removable bottom. Gently pressthe crust into the pan and up the sides. Usingyour fingers, crimp and remove any excessdough. Refrigerate the crust.■ Fill a medium saucepan with 2 inches of water, then fit it with a steamer basket. Set the squashin the steamer basket, then bring the water toa boil. Cover and steam the squash until verytender, about 15 minutes.■ Transfer the squash to a blender or food pro-cessor. Process or blend until mostly smooth.Add the eggs, cheese, brown sugar, thyme, saltand pepper, then process again untilvery smooth.■ Remove the crust from the refrigerator andset it on a rimmed baking sheet. Carefully pourthe squash mixture into the crust, then bakefor 25 minutes, or until set at the center. Coolslightly before cutting into slices.■ Nutrition information per serving: 220 calo-ries; 90 calories from fat (41 percent of totalcalories); 10 g fat (4 g saturated; 0 g trans fats);75 mg cholesterol; 29 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber;7 g sugar; 6 g protein; 430 mg sodium.

Sweet andwild—stuffing that goeswith the grainBy Alison LadmanAssociated Press

Stop fussing over whether to prepare yourThanksgiving stuffing inside or alongsidethe turkey. Your life will be so much easier ifyou just embrace thewonder that is casseroledish stuffing. And to help get you over that hump,we cre-

ated a stuffingwithbig, boldflavors andplentyof texture.Wekept the classic add-ins like cel-ery, onions, thyme and sage, but sweetenedthemupwith diced apples and golden raisins.Add a generous stick of butter andheartywildrice, andyouhave a stuffing thatwill leave youdelightfully stuffed.By the way, the easiest way to cook wild

rice is to treat it like pasta. Bring a mediumsaucepan of water to a boil, add about 1/3 cupof uncooked wild rice and cook for 45 to 55minutes, then drain.

MULTIGRAIN ANDWILD RICE STUFFINGWITH APPLES AND HERBSStart to finish: 1 hour (15 minutes active)Servings: 8

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter2 medium yellow onions, chopped4 stalks celery, diced1 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper1 bunch scallions, finely chopped1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley1/4 cup chopped fresh sage 1/4 cup choppedfresh tarragon1 cup cooked wild rice3 medium apples, peeled and diced1 cup golden raisins1 loaf multigrain bread, cubed and toasted2 1/2 cups low-sodium turkey or chicken brothor stock

■ Heat the oven to 400 F. Coat a large casse-role or 9-by-13-inch baking pan withcooking spray.■ In a large skillet over medium-high, melt thebutter. Add the onions and celery and cook untiltender, 7 to 8 minutes. Remove the pan fromthe heat and stir in the salt, pepper, scallions, parsley, sage and tarragon.■ In a large bowl, combine the onion mixturewith the cooked rice, apples, raisins and breadcubes. Stir in the broth. Spoon into the preparedpan and cook, uncovered, for 30 minutes.■ Nutrition information per serving: 330 calo-ries; 120 calories from fat (36 percent of totalcalories); 13 g fat (8 g saturated; 0 g trans fats);30 mg cholesterol; 48 g carbohydrate; 7 g fiber;22 g sugar; 8 g protein; 440 mg sodium.

“The First Phone Callfrom Heaven”by Mitch Albomc.2013, Harper$24.99/$32.99 Canada272 pages

The call almost scaredyou half to death.First of all, it woke you

up and everybody knowsthat middle-of-the-nightphone calls are never goodnews. Secondly, you weresound asleep and third, who calls awrongnumberat 3 a.m.?It took you awhile to get back to sleep

that night. You cursed the phone as soonas the alarmwent off, but read “The FirstPhoneCall fromHeaven”byMitchAlbomand youmight look differently at the de-vice next time.Tess Rafferty was occupied with a

kitchen task when her phone rang. Irri-tated, she let her answeringmachinepickup the call, but when she heard the voiceon the speaker, she stopped everythingshe was doing. It was her mother on the phone.Hermotherhadbeendeadforfouryears.Katherine Yellin was the first to talk

about her phone call because her sister,

Diane – dead at age forty-six - had told her to speakup. Then Tess admittedshe’d gotten calls, too, andby weeks’ end, six peoplefrom little Coldwater,Michigan, had receivedphone calls from heaven.Soon, Coldwater resi-

dents weren’t the onlyones to know about themiracle.Over in nearbyAlpena,

the local TV station sentone of their disposablereporters to seewhat was

goingon.AmyPennwasn’t a believer, butshe figured the best way to escapeweek-end shifts at the station was to scoop anexclusive story.Once the national media heard about

the phone calls fromheaven, though, thatwasn’t easy to do. Believers, the faithful, and the prayerful crowded into Coldwa-ter, hoping to hear from their own lovedones beyond.Sullivan “Sully”Harding thought they

were all fools. There was no heaven, nobliss, no peace. He knew that, becausethe best woman he’d ever known hadbeen taken from him, his son was nowmotherless, and this “heaven” stuff wasa scam.He had time on his hands, and heplanned tofindwhoeverwasdoing this tohis neighbors, to expose the hoax. And then Sully’s phone began to ring…“The First Phone Call from Heaven”

remindedme of one of thosemovies thatyoucould easilywatch everynight for therest of your life. The beginning characters in this book

come from all walks of life; they’re nor-mal peoplewho just happen to be gettingwhat every grief-stricken personwants. Then author Mitch Albom drops a non-believer into the situation and he lets uswatch everything twist and unravel inthemidst of media sensationalism, mobmentality, half-truths, fervent faith, andpainful realizations thatmay ormay notbe valid. It’s uncomfortable to watch, mostly because you know what’s goingto happen to them, to their town, andto the phone calls that come a little tooon-schedule.Yes, this book is predictable but it’s also

entertaining, uplifting, and itcanbesharedwith pretty much anybody. And if that’s

whatyouneedtoreadthisweek, “TheFirstPhoneCall fromHeaven” is a good call.

“27: A History of the 27 ClubThrough the Lives of Brian Jones,Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, JimMorrison, Kurt Cobain, and AmyWinehouse”by Howard Sounesc.2013, Da Capo$26.99/higher in Canada360 pages

Yourememberthefirsttimeyouheardit. Was it the guitar that first touchedyour

soul and called you to dance? Or maybethe bluesy tones made you sway, or thesitar, the drums, the listen-to-me voice. You were so young, and so were the

performerswhobroughtyou to thatpoint. Was it coincidence that they all died soearly, or was it something more sinis-ter? Read “27: A History of the 27 ClubThrough the Lives of Brian Jones, JimiHendrix, Janis Joplin, JimMorrison,KurtCobain, andAmyWinehouse”byHowardSounes, and find out…Call it tragic, call it a shock, but it was

probablynosurprise tomost:Hendrix, Jo-plin, and Morrison. Brian Jones. CobainandWinehouse – each, arguably, a geniusin the musical industry and each dead atage27. What is it about rock&roll andthatage? Is there somethingmysterious afoot? No, says Sounes. The 27 Club is a co-

incidence - a major one, true, and terri-bly sad, but a coincidence nonetheless.Statistics show that dying at age 27 is notuncommon, especially when it comes tohard-living, drug-taking rock stars.Still, in addition to commonality of age,

Jones, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain, andWinehouseexperiencedotherparallels. All, says Sounes, seemed to be “weary

of life by the end.” As children, theywereintelligent, and five of them naturallygravitated towardmusic. All had rocky (ornonexistent) relationshipswith their par-ents. All six suffered from mental illnessordepressionandweresubstanceabusers.Jones had been “living dangerously for

years” before drowning in his swimmingpool.Hendrix died undermysterious cir-cumstances and ever-conflicting stories.Joplin signed anewwill threedaysbeforeherdeath, perhaps contemplating suicide.Morrison, fearing a jail sentence in Mi-ami , flew to Paris , where he eventually

overdosed on heroin. Before he commit-ted suicide, Cobain expressed hope thathis toddler-daughter wouldn’t follow inhis footsteps. And Winehouse literally“drank herself to death.”And thoughSounes indicates thatmost

of these six musicians “had a horror” ofbeing alone, alone is how they died. The first time you heard LightMyFire

or Me & Bobby McGee, it was probablyfrom a scratchy record and cheap speak-ers. “27” brings those memories back –with a lot less static. This is, in fact, almost a read-in-one-

sitting kind of book, so thoroughly fas-cinating is author Howard Sounes in hismethod of storytelling. We startwith thedeathof themost recent inductee into the“club,” then travel aroundandback.Alongthe way, Sounes explains what led eachto the (often bitter) end, then he givesreaders a shock: the 27 Club is a mega-coincidence, but the six here are the tipof the tragic iceberg…I verymuch enjoyed this book, not just

for its musical history but for the soundsit put insidemyhead. I think that if you’rea fan of classic rock or blues, or if you justwant a good look at stardomgonewrong,“27” gets five stars.

TheSouthFortMyersWolfpackproveddefensewins, not only championships, but games enroute to one. In their 28-16 Friday night play-offvictory against LakeGibson, theWolfpackallowed 297 yards, and Gibson quarterbackTrey Congdon throw for 146 yards.

Three interceptions, two of them returned for touch-downs byTeh’Ron Fuller, kept the Braves from gainingground on a teamwhowas on amission.“I didn’t really have a certainmentality; I justwanted

to go out there and win the football game,” said Fuller,a senior linebacker and defensive back. “We wanted tomove on to the next round. That’s it.”Head coach Grant Redhead said getting Congdon to

throw passes he wasn’t used to helped stop the offense.South rushed Congdon repeatedly, and forced the ballout of his hands before he was set.The 32-29 loss to Immokalee is still fresh inRedhead’s

mind. He noted it as a lesson learned.“Wedidn’t try to over-emphasizewhatwedid against

(Immokalee’s) J.C. Jackson, which tookusout of our cov-erage,” Redhead said. “We knewwewere going to giveup some things.Wedidn’twant to give up thedeepball.”The long pass only appeared once.Congdon connected with Sammie Jackson on a 30-

yard strike late in the fourth. The next playwas a 7-yardtouchdown lob to Shaquan Perkins. Though he had twomore completions for 16 and 17, nine of Congdon’s 16completions were for fewer than seven yards. The Wolfpack, who gained just 114 yards in total of-

fense, knows their offense has to be more explosiveagainst Winter Haven at home in 6A regional semifi-nals this Friday.Quarterback Keith Smith only managed 35 yards

through the air. For a team which averages over 200rushing yards a game, they only garnered 79.Noel Pennwas their leading rusher with 37 yards. Their two of-fensive touchdowns came off runs by Justin Hutchins. With twominutes left in the third, South kept thefield

goal unit on the sideline on fourth down and called onthe senior to deliver. Hutchins forced a three yard runinto the end zone, giving South a 21-10 lead going intothe fourth.“I wanted to get a chance because I knew I could get

it in,” Hutchins said. “I’ve been 100 percent at the goalline all season. We weren’t going to let this end rightnow. When I got held up, I had to give it a second effortand reach across the goal line.”Other than sprucing up the offense, Redhead and

Fuller saidmoremental focus will be needed to top theBlue Devils. South had a few offsides and illegal proce-dure penalties. Fuller said he knows what needs to beemphasized in practice.“We’ve just got towork on ourmistakes,” Fuller said.

“We’ve got to try to level our penalties down. If we nar-row down those penalties, we’re guaranteed to make itto the third or fourth round.”WinterHavenwona thrilling gameagainst IdaBaker,

When asked who he’d rather play, he decided not toplay favorites.“It doesn’tmatter,” Penn saidwith a poker face. “The

Normally, bulletin board material isreserved for teams trash-talking otherteams. But even the media can inadver-tently fuel a fire. One that didn’t necessarily need ex-

tra gasoline on it is the Estero girls crosscountryprogram. After threeconsecutivestate titles, it’s proved its worth. But theWildcats still have doubters, especiallyafter losing somuch from last year.Make that haddoubters. Estero is topof

Class 3A for yet another year after beat-ing Sarasota by 13 points in the FHSAAstate cross country finals at ApalacheeRegional Park on Nov. 9.

“We read an article on FLrunners.comthat said the dynasty was over,” Esterocoach Jeff Sommer said. “Sowe switchedthe three D’s this year — discipline, de-sire, dedication— to dynasties don’t die.One team, one family. It’s kind of likethe movie The Blindside. We got eachother’s backs.”Wildcats senior Araceli Leon, a new

addition to the team, finishedfifth, sopho-moreDaleyCline sixth and seniorBetha-ny Jenkins 10th to pace thewell-roundedteam of newlyminted champions.“A lot of teams have a run for a year

or two because they have some goodathletes, and replacing kids is a tributeto the hard work they do,” Sommer said.“Wehad a couple kids quit a couple years

ago, had rings on their finger and said theprogram was over. When Katy G. Solisand Kacy Smith graduated, they saidEstero was done. We love the challeng-es. We’ll work as hard as anyone in thestate. Some says, some teams may havemore talent, but my kids will work hardall day.”The 3A race was won individually by

Fort Myers senior Emily Edwards, fin-ishing off her career with a victory bybreaking away from a pack of six includ-ing Leon at the two-mile mark. For Leon, The talent was impres-

sive in the field as she looked down thestarting line at the pedigrees of variousregional champions.“A lot of things go through your head,”

Leonsaid. “You justhave to focusandgiveit all you have.”TheEsteroboysfinished 10thas a team,

just behind Ft.Myers, being led byWild-cats junior Dillon Vallette in 54th place. So for one more year, the debate may

rage on as to Estero’s enduring legacy, but if anything is to be learned, new kidsmean new opportunities. And Sommercited Leon as the perfect example whyyou just never knowwhat you have untilit’s found.“She is a great leader,” Sommer said.

“Shedoesn’t saymuch inpractice, doesn’tsay much even today, but I’m excitedfor her. Most good kids just set the ex-ample. They run with their legs and nottheir mouths.”

The EsteroWildcats came a long waythis season under first-year head coachMark Jackson. But that trip came to an end Friday

night in the opening round of the Class6Astateplayoffs as thehostHeritagePan-thers rolled to a 49-3 victory in PalmBay.Heritagereturnedtwofumblesfortouch-

downs, and scored on its first four posses-sions to end theWildcats’ season at 5-6.“They’re a heckuva football team,”

Jackson said of Heritage. “They’ve got agreat defense. We knew that coming in.”TheWildcatsdidn’t help themselvesby

dropping a number of snaps as quarter-back Zimon Brennan— playing in placeof the injured Cody Long—was himselfplaying with a broken finger.Brennan ran 12 times for 69 yards, and

also completed five of 12 passes for 34yards for the Wildcats, who were out-gained 317-111.Ryan Keegan ran seven times for 21

yards. A.J. Ferry caught one pass for 30yards, and Nick Nataro, a USF commit, had two receptions for 10 yards. After Dedric Witherspoon scored on a

7-yard run on Heritage’s opening posses-sion, the Panthers got on the board againquicklywhenDujuanAlexanderreturnedafumble34yards fora touchdown.ThePan-thers scored again to make it 21-0 beforeEsteromustered itsbestdriveof thegame. The Wildcats moved to the Heritage

10-yard line, but after a fumbled snap onthird down, Estero had to settle for a 38-yard field goal byMarshallWilson.Any thoughts the Wildcats had about

staging a second-half comeback wereerased when they fumbled the kickoff.Alexander scooped it up and ran 21 yardsfor his second fumble recovery.Witherspoon also rushed for two

touchdowns, and Heritage quarterbackClinton Moxam ran for two scores andthrewforanotheras thePanthersgrabbedthe early lead and never looked back.“I wouldn’t say we were star-struck,”

Jackson said. “But it kindof appeared thatway a little bit at the beginning.”Despite that early second-half fumble,

theWildcats coachwas pleasedwith theway his team played in the second halfagainst the Panthers.Herefusedtousetheinjuriesat thequar-

terback position as any kind of an excuse

for the way things went Friday night, andsimply chalked it up towhat hehopeswillbe a learning experience for his players.“It’s a learning process,” Jackson said.

“Hopefully,we’ll get back to this situationnext year and we’ll get better at it.”Though itwas certainly a toughway to

end the season, the Wildcats coach hada smile on his face as he started to thinkabout the future of his program.“We’ve got a lot of work to do in the

offseason, and you know what, I’m look-ing forward to it,” he said. “Our first yearhere, I thinkwegot a lot further than a lotof people expectedus toget. Butwe’vegotto build on it.We’ve got to keepworking.“It’s a process. And you know what, a

fewyears ago, (Heritage)was struggling. We’regoing toget there, butwe’ve just gotto work our tails off, have a great offsea-son and get these seniors out of here therightway. You knowwhat? We’ll beOK.”
