November 4, 2019 Dear Parents and Guardians: Re: Requirements Under BC’s New Vaccination Status Reporting Regulation

BC’s new Vaccination Status Reporting Regulation came into effect on July 1, 2019. It supports the gathering of immunization records by Public Health. The regulation applies to all students in all schools within the Province’s jurisdiction, including those who are home-schooled. It does not apply to children attending schools in First Nations communities. In the coming months, our staff will check the immunization records we have on file for school age children. They will identify children whose records are missing or incomplete. Families of these children may be contacted. They will be asked to provide us with the immunization information required under the regulation. We will also let families know where children can receive immunizations.

Our public health centres already have complete immunization information on file for most children. For this reason, most families will not be contacted or need to take any further action. If you are contacted, it may only mean that we need to update some information in our files. It may not mean that your child is missing immunizations.

You can use the online Vaccination Status Indicator tool to check if your child’s immunization record is missing or incomplete. It tells you if your child’s immunization record is on file with public health but does not provide any details about their immunization status or history.

Collecting immunization information allows us to connect with families about the importance of disease prevention. It also helps public health to control outbreaks by quickly identifying children who are not fully immunized and helps everyone get back to learning as soon as possible.

For more information, please visit https://immunizebc.ca/vaccination-status-reporting-regulation or contact your local health centre to speak to a public health nurse. Thank you for helping to keep our children and communities healthy. Sincerely,

Silvina Mema, MD MSc FRCPC Medical Health Officer

PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Miss Kelowna Lady of the Lake Program is a youth ambassador training program with six months of weekly training sessions from January to July. The cost of our program is completely free as community sponsors pay for each candidate. The training has several areas of focus such as:

• Public speaking • Car maintenance • Building self-confidence • Nutrition • Financial management • Self defense • Networking • Area knowledge and Okanagan tourism • Time management • And so much more!

During the six months, the candidates participate in countless volunteer events across the community, usually accompanied by Miss Kelowna and Kelowna's Princess. The candidates also have multiple judged events throughout their candidacy, which include the Spring Tea, the Fashion Show, the Speech and Talent Night, and the Pageant.

Our program also offers a variety of Scholarships and Awards to help with Post-Secondary Education for the recipient. Our awards are anywhere from $250-$1000.

After being crowned, Miss Kelowna has the opportunity to go to our sister city, Kasugai, Japan and represent Kelowna! As a Miss Kelowna Lady of the Lake candidate, you will obtain skills that will help you succeed in many aspects of life. The growth you and others around you will see throughout the training process will astound you! Our society aims to mentor young women of Kelowna, enable them to learn new skills, and empower their leadership.

If you are interested please contact us by one of the following:

Frequently Asked Questions: How long is the program?

The candidacy program runs from January until the pageant is held annually in July. At the pageant, Miss Kelowna and the Princess are crowned and they continue as ambassadors from that time until the next pageant the following year.

How much does the program cost?

Each candidate is given a sponsor who covers the cost of the program for them, which makes this a program affordable for everyone! The pageant held in July has a ball gown portion, and while some girls supply their own, the Lady of the Lake Society has many partners who can also lend the candidate a dress if she is unable to. Basically, ponytails and pantyhose are the only things the candidate needs to worry about.

What is the commitment like?

Candidates meet once a week, typically Mondays, for two hours. As the program goes on more meetings are made as volunteering opportunities arise and different events occur. A full schedule is given at contract signing or you can email us for more detail.

How involved should parents be?

The biggest thing parents need to contribute is support! Their child is going to be doing a lot of firsts, so parents need to offer support, such as attending events and listening to them practice their speeches. But, parents should also give them the opportunity to learn how to handle it on their own. The society has a Parental Liaison and she is happy to answer any and all questions you may have. Please contact her through email for further questions.

What do the candidates learn during training?

Topics include: Public speaking, car maintenance, networking and interview skills, personal finance, etiquette, dance, area knowledge, and modelling and makeup skills. These are just a few examples of the training candidates go through.

Who is eligible to be a candidate?

Young women between the ages of 16-18 living in the City of Kelowna. For issues regarding if you are considered to be living in Kelowna please contact us via email.

What happens if I decide to drop out halfway through the program?

We'd be sad to see you go, but if you must drop out half way through the program due to commitment conflict or other reasons, you are required to pay back the fee your sponsor paid for you to participate in the program.
