The Halloween Bowling Fiesta was organized by the Kaplan Students Committee on the 18th of October 2014 at the National Service Resort and Country Club. It was a sold out event, having attracted more than fifty students. Unlike traditional bowling rules, the points were calculated based on odd/even pin falls. This mean for every odd number of pin falls, the team will be awarded ten points and for even number of pin falls, the team will be given twenty points. Prizes were also given to the best male and female bowlers. More pics inside.
W hat happens when ghosts, witches and zombies have a gathering in a bowling alley? They spook the pins with bowling balls of course!

Editorial
A s we approach the final quarter of 2014, we take a look at the hiring trends of the upcoming 3 months. Based on trends,
employment and recruitment tends to ease during the periods of November – February. However, an employment survey conducted
by Manpower - a global recruitment and headhunting company reported that employment is favourable in Q4
The current unemployment rate stands at 1.9, falling slightly from the previous value of 2 from Q3. The survey reported that, from a
sample size of 663 surveyed employers, 19% said that they expect an increase in staffing levels. This is despite economic uncertainty
due to geopolitical factors happening worldwide. This increment is expected to be observed across all industries, with the most
optimistic hiring plans are reported in the Finance, Insurance & Real Estate sectors. Also, due to the upcoming festive seasons, there
might be a spike in manpower needs in the Hospitality, Retail and F&B sectors.
According to Hudson Singapore, another industry
which has increased manpower needs is the
Information Technology & Telecommunication
sector. There is a growing demand for personnel,
who are both IT trained and has business
partnering skills. This allows companies to optimise
business processes, sales supports while
leveraging on the individual’s IT knowledge.
Trends in Recruitment & Human Resource
In August 2014, as the Singapore Government tightened the
application of employment pass for expatriate employees with the
Fair Consideration Framework, we will see a continued demand for
Singaporean and Permanent Resident workers. Also, as the
Government continues to offer incentives and grants for companies
and increase the instituted retirement age, we can expect to see
companies hiring more matured personnel. To meet the manpower
crunch, companies might place more emphasis on developing and
training its currently employees and also rolling out talent retention
strategies.
Advise for job seekers
Though the market is employee-driven, it is imperative to manage
expectations and not over price oneself and be over demanding
with the job offer. It is also important to stay employable by
constantly looking for relevant avenues to upgrade your skills so as
to add value to the company you are currently employed by.
Use the current situation to your advantage! If you’re completing your studies shortly, this would be a good time to send out resumes
to a prospective company. We at SAGSO have organised a resume and cover letter writing workshop on 26th November from 6.30pm
to 9.30pm at Wilkie Edge Classroom 209. This workshop will equip you with the necessary skills to craft a resume and cover letter that
stands out. Find out more about this event on our Campus Life
website!

As the saying goes, "As I live, I learn". Ms Tay Choon Eng constantly grabbed
opportunities to improve herself through courses to increase her knowledge and
skills. She was motivated to take up the Masters of Science in Marketing program
with the University College Dublin in order to gain greater insights and enhance
her critical and analytical skills. Her goal of learning was close to her heart as
“personal and professional growth is crucial to me. By learning continually, I can
constantly refresh my knowledge and impart new skills to my students.”
As a lecturer in a private university, Ms Tay’s interactions with her students gave
her an edge in comprehending their perspectives and challenges faced. During
her academic studies at Kaplan, the main challenge Ms Tay faced was managing
her time effectively between work, studies and her family. To juggle her many
commitments, she observed a highly disciplined practice of prioritization, making
sure her regular work like marking assignments were done on time before
embarking on her own classes and group discussions.
Ms Tay also stressed the need to focus on tasks and deadlines, which helped her to be productive with the limited time she
had each day. “Fortunately, I did not encounter any major hiccups in managing these aspects because I was able to
apportion time for the separate tasks”, recounted Ms Tay.
In pursuing her postgraduate degree, Ms Tay felt her biggest takeaway was developing a new form of maturity honed from
the practical insights obtained from lecturers and peers over the duration of her course. The most memorable part of her
educational journey was learning through the sharing of life’s experiences with her lecturers and course-mates. These
sessions equipped her with different aspects of marketing and business knowledge, giving her an array of valuable insights
which has broadened her mastery of the discipline and in turn allowed her to explore teaching opportunities in business and
marketing modules.
Ms Tay has clear advice for those considering further studies, that is, “be certain of what you want to achieve after
upgrading, whether in terms of professional and/or personal attainment. This will help you to persevere when the going gets
tough or when you encounter conflicting commitments.”

Halloween Bowling Fiesta Highlights
18 Oct 2014
A side from the high- score award, the best costume awards were awarded to two Halloween bowlers. It was not an easy selection for the Student Affairs and Graduate Services Office staff to choose, as all the ghouls and monsters were terrifying enough. After much scare and fright, the SAGSO staff were convinced that the
awards should go to Mr Zombie and Miss Jigsaw Killer from the horror movie ‘SAW’.
A big thank you to all our participants for showing up with creative and ghostly costumes. The three hours spent was worthwhile, having made new friends and most importantly, everyone had fun. It was a great evening for everyone, and luckily for us, no one called the Ghostbusters.

Workshop: Make People Listen Up
5 Nov 2014
Always blank-out during your presentation? It is difficult for many of us to speak comfortably in front of a group of people. To address this confidence gap in pub-lic speaking, the Student Affairs and Graduate Services Office worked with the Speech Academy Asia to bring about Make People Listen Up, a public speaking workshop. Held at the Wilkie campus on 5 Nov and conducted by Mr Kelvin Tan Co-Founder of Speech Academy Asia, 38 students came together to learn how they could improve their public speaking skills through fun and hands-on prac-tice. Participants found out that anyone could be a good speaker, by practicing and recognising the basics of a good presenter. Tips on body language were given to participants who fully enjoyed the fun and interactive workshop.

18 football enthusiasts gathered on a radiant Saturday afternoon on 1 Nov to show off their football skills in the
Kaplan Elites Football Trial held at the Premier Pitch along Tessensohn Road. All the participants were put through individual drills and tests designed to assess the players fitness and skills. Displaying all their skills to the best of their abilities in order to qualify as a Kaplan Elite and represent Kaplan in competitions, the players impressed with their skills and moves with the ball during the group plays. It was not easy deliberating whom to shortlist and select. A big thank you to everyone for their time and commitment to attend this trial. Are you football enthusiasts?
