YOUGHAL AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY ALERT MEETING NOVEMBER 2010By Christy Parker
There was a diminished top table at November's Community Alertmeeting in the Walter Raleigh hotel, with secretary Kaye Curtinunavoidably absent and chairman Michael Beecher down the cor-ridor treading the boards in The Playboy of the Western World. Itwas left to treasurer Pa Forrest and, particularly, PRO Sgt JohnSharkey to officiate. The attendance was smaller than normal also. This, as much asanything else, probably reflected a general tranquillity in the com-munity and a noticeably pacific Halloween. By comparison, twoyears, ago a Halloween-from-hell had sparked the resurgence ofthe Community Alert forum. FinancesThe treasurer revealed that the group had acquired public liabilityinsurance at a rate of €150 for the next twelve months. "Thatleaves us with a balance of €905.o8," he said. The policy coversany activity undertaken on behalf of the group through attendingmeetings, flag days, assisting with alarm installations, etc… Sergeant Sharkey proceeded that payment for all 40+ alarms thusfar installed had concluded, with just the paperwork formality of"tidying up the applications against the money" for official, gov-ernment purposes. "There is a new system in place now and theywill then send us out the paperwork to comply with that for futureinstallations," he added. There are currently 23 new applications inplace for the next spate of alarms, with the general acceptance rateof 15 alarms per application expected to persist. The sergeantobserved that the alarms and the peace of mind they provide "arethe most tangible thing available through the community alert atpresent."Continuing his report, the sergeant said October's DrugsAwareness week had run successfully, with 3, 500 Dial To StopDrug Dealing leaflets being delivered to the community, alongwith posters erected throughout the district. StatisticsThe statistics for reported crime since the October 5th meetingwere as follows: Drugs:31 street searches and five private premises search under warrant. These resulted in five persons being detected in possession for per-sonal use at Strand Palace apartments, Copper Alley Road,O'Brien's Place, Templemichael and North Main Street and oneperson found in possession with possible intent to supply.ASBOs:One issued to a young man in relation to activities on Main Streetand around a school. Assaults:Two minor assaults involving individuals known to each other atCnoc Aobhinn and Park Mountain. Burglaries:There were five burglaries in past month at, Summerfield, FriarStreet, Harbour View, Seaview and Youghal Bay Yew Wood. Criminal Damage: Eleven case reported, three of which had been detected. The areasinvolved included O'Brien's Terrace, Golf Links Road, HilltopHotel, Seafield, O'Reilly's Terrace, Ballymacoda, Rivergate Malland Brooks Super Valu. Sergeant Sharkey said the incidents large-ly amounted to such damage as wing mirrors, windows broken, graffiti and electric sockets vandalised.Thefts:Two incidents, involving a pharmacy in Youghal and a wire badg-er trap in Glendine. Liquor Licensing: Underage drinking reports have mercifully subsided at present, while one public house facing prosecution for late drinking.Public Order Offences: There were six such offences reported since the previous meeting, occurring at Claycastle car park, Cork Hill (2), Strand Street, NorthMain Street (2) and Chapel Lane. Sergeant Sharkey reported thatthe Halloween weekend had passed without reports of any serious
incident. There had been one young girl arrested for a public orderoffence, which was not Halloween related, and likewise one win-dow broken on the main street. ConcernThe sergeant expressed concern at the sudden increase in burglaryactivity, which was currently the main crime concern in the town.He cautioned that extra care should be taken in the circumstances. He urged householder to ensure their homes were securely lockedat all times and likewise property such as cars. With modern carsincreasingly difficult to start without keys, he advised that thievesnow tend to break into houses to locate car keys which consequent-ly should be stored in a secure place. Proceeding, the garda said many burglaries occur during the day, whereby criminals will call to a house to gauge a presence or oth-erwise. "If you answer the door they may ask for directions or askif you have a dog for sale or if you had an ad in the paper recent-ly, or whatever," he explained. Dud notes, bogus callers:The garda repeated previous warnings that adept, organised indi-viduals or gangs are targeting shops whereby they proceed to con-fuse the staff with complicated procedures stemming from requeststo convert €50 notes into smaller denominations. Bogus callers tohomes falsely claim to represent social workers, gardai or serviceproviders remain prevalent in the region.Generally speaking…In a general discussion, it was remarked that Youghal was relative-ly unique in the region for having a Community Alert group. Amember from the floor said he had received favourable commentsfrom the wider public on its presence and it assistance towards thecommunity, while Sergeant Sharkey reminded all that the meetingsinclude a forum by which the public can air issues, grievances orotherwise, they may wish to convey to the gardai. The next community alert meeting will take place in the WalterRaleigh on Tuesday December 7th at 8.45 pm.

At a special sitting of the Youghal Town Council last Tuesday thecouncil decided to defer on ratification of the Traffic ManagementPlan for Ashe Street, Church Street and De Valera Street. The planhad three main objectives
1. Church St. local access only, no through road.2. Ashe St. two way operation3. De Valera St. to become one-way from Main St. to Ashe St.
Town Clerk, Liam Ryan began by stating that there had been a'low response' to the public consultation process but took this to bea positive sign that the plans were seen as favourable to the gen-eral public. Rather than create a contentious environment the planseemed to perplex members as to what would suit everyone andCllr. Murray set the tone when she said. "It's one of those whereyou can't please all of the people all of the time." The main con-cerns centred on two visible outcomes should the plan be ratified.Firstly, most agreed that the 'tourist quarter' as Cllr. Coyne termedit, needed to be preserved as a pedestrian area to allow a good andsafe quality of access for tourists in and around the FrenchGardens and Collegiate Church. Secondly, that there are real con-cerns that traffic on Windmill Hill junction to Ashe St. willincrease significantly. That issue was highlighted by Cllr.McLellan who said the junction has two blind spots for driverscoming onto Windmill Hill and she described the junction as'extremely dangerous'. Cllr. Revins had also stated that drivers will have to turn around atvarious points on Ashe street to find an access out onto WindmillHill. Cllr. McLellan imagined great frustration for those who maywant to use the car park at Priory Court only to find it full. Cllr.Burke made the point that services crucial to the public such asDoctors' surgeries (of which there are four in the area) andchemists and the Post Office need to be accessed freely from AsheStreet. "You will find there will be extreme difficulties in makingu-turns. De Valera St. must be a two-way. The residents thereshouldn't have to take all the traffic. I propose the bollard fromChurch St. should be removed," he said. Cllr. Burke also warnedthat traffic problems could be become so complex under the cur-rent proposal that it could act as a deterrent for church goers andeffectively lead in the long term to the closure of St. Mary's parishchurch. Cllr. Murray also expressed the view that there was 'noreason' why De Valera St. should not remain two-way but conced-ed that some alleviation of traffic should also include anotherstreet easing the burden for Dev residents. Sensing that the debate was been driven into corners, the TownClerk advised members to view the plan in the context of thePublic Realm Policy agreed and adopted by the council. "Lookagain at the Public Realm Policy; discuss it, reflect on it and comeback to this plan," he said. Mr. Ryan then reminded the membersof how Church St. once looked with congestion, poor surfacingand overhead wiring. "Look at the photos of Church St. before thePublic Realm Plan. Church St. is a prime example of how good theplan works," he added. The Town Clerk also asked that members take a longer view of thedirection the town will go in the future if planning is dictated bythe demands of increasing traffic. He said the town was developedbefore cars were on the road and that there needs to be an alterna-tive vision to creating plans around traffic. "We have forced theproblems with cars, there is nothing wrong with walking 100yards," he concluded. Cllr. Hennessey argued that many churchgoers are elderly, that they face a hill and a large amount of stepsjust to get into the church and that asking them to park a distanceaway was unreasonable. "That is why we have a new church," Mr.Ryan responded.
Cllr. Burke then made the point that if the Public Realm Plan wasto be adhered to strictly, then there would be no traffic on ChurchSt, as is the case, he said, on the continent. "Church St. is neitherone thing or the other," he mused, "Delivery trucks park either sideof the bollard and traffic goes up and down the lane." He addedthat parking on the street was also a problem because there is noadherence to the parking laws. Mayor, Linehan-Foley asked that the members be aware the coun-cil were making decisions for residents and users of the area fromwhich they themselves are living apart. "Unfortunately, we aremaking decisions on places where we do not live." Cllr. Revinsasked that a twelve month trial be adopted to judge how the newplan might work. Cllr. Beecher took another view on the plan stat-ing that the good will of the people had, up to the present, madethe streets relatively safe. "I don't see why anything shouldchange. Courtesy works and there has never been a serious crashthere. I agree with Cllr. Coyne to keep Church St. closed. I thinkwe should put suitable traffic calming measures in De Valera St.,"he said. Despite finding a resolution difficult, the clearest consen-sus was that regardless of which street is open or closed or whichway the traffic should flow, Ashe St. should remain two-way as avital asset to locals and relief road from main street congestion. Also, it was unanimously agreed that the middle of Chapel Laneshould be closed. The Town Clerk advised that the Chapel Lane proposal would bea separate procedure. At this juncture, Mr. Ryan said that ChurchSt. would be open throughout the works on Emmett Place. Somemembers thought that this would be an ideal opportunity to studytraffic habits, problems and possible solutions while further con-sideration was given to the current Traffic Management Plan.

By Michael Twomey Youghal's Labour Town Councilor, Tommy O' Connell has vowedto fight forces within his own party that he says are out to 'destroyYoughal' before any forthcoming election. The comment cameafter Youghal Council Town Clerk, Mr. Liam Ryan was advised bythe headquarters of the Labour Party that Tommy O' Connellshould not sit at future council meetings. Mr. Ryan informed mem-bers at a special meeting to discuss budgets and traffic manage-ment on Tuesday that he had been in correspondence with theGeneral Secretary of the Labour Party on Friday evening Oct.29th. Mr. Ryan told shocked members that the Labour Party saidthey 'were not happy with the selection process of Tommy O'Connell' and that they requested the councilor's nomination be'nullified'. The Town Clerk added that he was asked to reply to theLabour Party by 5pm Monday. Mr. Ryan then contacted Mr. O'Connell and advised him that it would 'not be appropriate' for himto come to Tuesday's special meeting. Mr. O' Connell had been co-opted onto the council seat in Youghal last October following thecontentious and much publicised resignation of Mr. Donie Daly. The Labour Party Press Office claimed on Tuesday that the prob-lem with Mr. O' Connell's co-option lies with the Youghal TownClerk. Further to this, it was alleged that Youghal Town Councilwere negligent during the co-opting process. When asked why theLabour Party had contacted the council with their request, Mr.Tony Heffernan said. "The proper selection procedure wasn't ful-filled under the law. All candidates are required to have a certifi-cate of political affiliation. Mr. O' Connell doesn't. I presume theTown Clerk is familiar with the law and would have checked thelegal requirements. The Town Council wasn't entitled to co-opthim." Mr. Ryan responded that he would make 'no comment oninternal Labour Party procedures'. The plot had thickened andtwisted by Tuesday afternoon when a clearly irate Mr. O' Connellcalled the dispute over his legitimacy as a certified member of theparty a 'smokescreen'. He also claimed that those with a 'vestedinterest' in discrediting the Youghal branch 'will fail'. "I don't havea certificate. However, I have a membership card and I have a let-ter from head office accepting my donation. That information wasconveyed to the Town Clerk. This is a petty procedure in theextreme and is an internal issue. Someone at a senior level withinthe Labour Party has an ulterior motive. I believe it comes frompotential candidates looking to destroy the Youghal branch beforean election. We have contacted Eamonn Gilmore and he is inves-tigating the matter. We won't take this lying down," he said TheLabour Party stated that they want the seat filled 'as quickly aspossible' though no timeframe was given nor has any name yetbeen identified for selection. The move by the Labour Party marksa new phase in what has been a tumultuous number of months forthe Youghal branch.

Reposing at his home inShanacoole, rosary for George was celebrated on Saturdayevening, on Sunday his removal took place to The parish ChurchYoughal. Following requiem mass on Monday - George was laidto rest in north Abbey Cemetery. To his loving wife Bridie his fam-ily Jo, Carole, Jacqueline, David and Kevin his sisters Pauline andRita brother in law Gerald and a wide circle of relatives neighboursand friends we extend our deepest sympathy Just one week ago local author - Mike Hackett - George's goodneighbour and friend launched his latest book "Sars". In it he fea-tures a beautiful photograph of George and his mother Molly plusa wonderful article compiled by George himself - in which hegives the following brief account of his life and times growing upin Youghal, as follows: "Before going to England, my first job here was for McCarthy'spaper shop near the corner of Chapel Lane, delivering papers onfoot. Mr McCarthy had a shop at 7 South Main Street for his chil-dren: Cal, Peggy and Kitty. That was 1948 and my pay was nineshillings a week. My second job was a step up on the first onewhen I went to work for Loreto Rohan for a pound a week and hada bike supplied Every morning from 7am, I delivered over eighty"Cork Examiners" around the town six to Mossie Geary at theFerry-Boat house to be, brought across to Monatrea a few to thetown hall for C.Y.M.S; another few for the British Legion Club atthe corner of Nile [O Rahilly] Street and the rest were singlesdelivered to regular houses Than at 11am I met the eleven O Clockbus that brought the Dublin Papers and the afternoons saw medeliver special bread and cakes brought to town by ThompsonsBakery van from Cork. But my day wasn't over yet! The CorkEvening Echo was left in the shop for sale, while I sold the restaround town. During those years, you had hundreds of soldiers atthe Barracks on Cork Hill- and this was a great stop Three penceor even sixpence could be got for just one Echo that in 1948 was apenny. The remaining papers would then be sold around SarsfieldTerrace. One day while cycling up near the Munster and Lenister Bank Iwas trying to find a low place on the path to permit me to cycle upand go behind the bank. But then I heard all the shouting - a van
had backfired around the old L&N - and a horse had bolted withhis cart. It hit me from behind and I was sent flying. First I wasbrought to Cole's Chemist and then to the local district Hospital -before being brought to the North Infirmary Cork - where I spentmany months. When eventually I was discharged from hospital Icould not cycle for a year- and the job at Loreto Rohan's was welland truly gone. Then 1951 saw me follow my sisters to England forwork.I returned in 1953 for a short while and worked in BlackwaterCottons. One of my comrades there was Jim Mernan fromVillerstown - one of twins- and we were good pals. The after fouryears I headed back to England again and stayed until 1980 I sawand advertisement on a paper looking for somebody to work inWaterford, doing exactly what I was at - a moulding technician. Iattended the interview, got the job with Hasbro and came back tolive in Waterford. And guess what? On my first day at work - therebefore me on the floor was the same Jim Mernan from VillerstownI was definitely home! Happy Memories - George O Donoghue"My sincere thanks to Mike Hackett for giving me permission toreproduce this lovely account of George's life - from his book"Sars" where the full article and photo is featured - Ar dheis Dé goraibh a h-anam dílis.Clashmore Ramblers Alpha Lotto - Jackpot €12100The Clashmore Ramblers Alpha Lotto jackpot this week will be€12,250 when our draw takes place this Wednesday night at theDecies Bar in Clashmore - our letters last week were L, Y, K, Nwell done to the following who were €20 Lucky dip winners: SteveFisher, Ballinamultina; Marion Power, Clashmore; EleanorRiordan, C\O Eithne. By Michael TwomeyYoughal’s Labour Town Councilor, Tommy O’ Connell has vowedto fight forces within his own party that he says are out to ‘destroyYoughal’ before any forthcoming election. The comment cameafter Youghal Council Town Clerk, Mr. Liam Ryan was advised bythe headquarters of the Labour Party that Tommy O’ Connellshould not sit at future council meetings. Mr. Ryan informedmembers at a special meeting to discuss budgets and traffic man-agement on Tuesday that he had been in correspondence with theGeneral Secretary of the Labour Party on Friday evening Oct.29th. Mr. Ryan told shocked members that the Labour Party saidthey ‘were not happy with the selection process of Tommy O’Connell’ and that they requested the councilor’s nomination be‘nullified’. The Town Clerk added that he was asked to reply to theLabour Party by 5pm Monday. Mr. Ryan then contacted Mr. O’Connell and advised him that it would ‘not be appropriate’ for himto come to Tuesday’s special meeting. Mr. O’ Connell had beenco-opted onto the council seat in Youghal last October followingthe contentious and much publicised resignation of Mr. DonieDaly. The Labour Party Press Office claimed on Tuesday that theproblem with Mr. O’ Connell’s co-option lies with the YoughalTown Clerk. Further to this, it was alleged that Youghal TownCouncil were negligent during the co-opting process. When askedwhy the Labour Party had contacted the council with their request,Mr. Tony Heffernan said. “The proper selection procedure wasn’tfulfilled under the law. All candidates are required to have a cer-tificate of political affiliation. Mr. O’ Connell doesn’t. I presumethe Town Clerk is familiar with the law and would have checkedthe legal requirements. The Town Council wasn’t entitled to co-opt him.” Mr. Ryan responded that he would make ‘no commenton internal Labour Party procedures’. The plot had thickened andtwisted by Tuesday afternoon when a clearly irate Mr. O’ Connellcalled the dispute over his legitimacy as a certified member of theparty a ‘smokescreen’. He also claimed that those with a ‘vestedinterest’ in discrediting the Youghal branch ‘will fail’. “I don’thave a certificate. However, I have a membership card and I havea letter from head office accepting my donation. That informationwas conveyed to the Town Clerk. We won’t take this lying down,” he said. By Saturday, Mr. O’ Connell took the first step to rectifying the
issue of formal certification by calling at meeting of the YoughalBranch with Labour election candidates for Cork East, JohnMulvihill and Sean Sherlock in attendance. Whether the move willappease Labour chiefs in Dublin remains to be seen. What isknown is that the The Labour Party stated that they want the coun-cil seat filled ‘as quickly as possible’ though no timeframe wasgiven nor has any name yet been identified for selection. Themove by the Labour Party marks a new phase in what has been atumultuous number of months for the Youghal branch.

The course was well laid out and enabled spectators tohave a good view for most of the races. Thankfully the weather heldout; it was bitterly cold but the rain and heavy winds held off. Groundconditions were a bit mucky following heavy rainfall and a few of ourathletes fell which was a pity. It was good to have a full team for theGirls U/9 for our second time. The team included Lucy O' Keefe,Kerry Barrett, Niamh O' Brien and Clodagh Mulhaire. Lucy O' Keefefinished in 15th and Kerry Barrett in 19th place. Both of these girlswon Cork team medals as Cork came 2nd. Lucy was the 3rd scorerand Kerry the 5th scorer. Well done to Clodagh and Niamh also whohave just started and did very well. Clodagh was 63rd and Niamh81st in a large field.Girls U/11 saw Litisha Moriarty, Aine O' Regan, Karynn Collins,Caoimhe Barry and Tirna Cahill in action. All girls put in great per-formances. The team finished 9th out of 14 teams which is a goodresult and shows tremendous improvement. Latisha finished in 39thplace and was closely followed by Aine O' Regan in 40th and Karynnin 44th place. Caoimhe Barry finished in 99th and Tirna in 124thplace. This was also a huge field.Boys U/11 had seven runners including Killian Nolan, DarraghMoran, Eoin O' Brien, Peter Buckley, Matthew Cody, Jake McCarthyand Ryan McCarthy. Killian had an outstanding race going out withthe front runners from the start; Killian worked his way from 6th posi-tion to a very strong 4th position in the last 800 metres of this 1500mrace and came in very strongly. He was the first scorer for Cork whowon Gold medals. Killian will now run on the Munster and Corkteams in Tullamore. Matthew Cody who was running up an age hada fantastic race coming in 22nd place but just got pipped before thefinish line for the 6th Cork medal. He was 7th for Cork and is noweligible to run on the Cork team in Tullamore on 19th December. Nextin was Darragh Moran who was so unlucky to have two falls both atthe start and out along the course when he was in the top 20. He losta few places but still managed to come in 40th which is a very goodposition. He was followed by Eoin O' Brien who is very new to run-ning and finsihed in a very creditable 49th place. He was followed byJake McCarthy in 63rd, Peter Buckley in 72nd and Ryan McCarhty in106th. All of these lads were running up an age and did very well.Ryan also had a bad fall coming into the last 600m. The team finishedin 5th place just sgort 7 points for All Ireland qualifiacation. The Girls U/13 had a team of four including Jennifer Hennessy, EmilyO' Keefe, Tara Murphy and Jayne O' Sullivan. Jennifer and Emilywent out with the leading group in a very talented and experiencedfield. Jennifer ran very strongly to hold on to fourth position.Jennifer will now run for the Munster and Cork teams in Tullamore. She was the second scorer for Cork. Emily is showing good formagain and is improving with every race. She ran a strong race to fin-ish in 15th place which was good enough to win a Gold Cork Medal;Emily was the sixth scorer for Cork. Next in were Jayne O' Sullivanand Tara Murphy. Both of these girls were running up an age and didvery well. This is also their first cross-country season. Fearghal Curtinwas our only competitor in the Boys U/13 field. Fearghal ran an out-standing race. He led from there with Ferrybank and Ennis Track athletesin pursuit. With 600m to go Fearghal was passed by the Ennis Trackathlete going downhill. Fearghal immediately responded and over-took alsmost immediately and finished sprinting uphill to win theMunster title. Fearghal was delighted and is showing great form atpresent. UNDER 18 D FINAL BARRYROE V YOUGHAL 2-1 to 1-8 The Girls had been training hard since the junior season ended at the endof September and were confident off the back of the Junior Success asmost of the minor panel would have been on the starting 15 with theJunior team. After a very exciting game against Blarney in the semi final the girlsknew they were up against it though coming into the final. The team lined out almost in the same positions with just 2 changes ofAmy Motherway going into full back and Allanah Finn into corner for-ward. In the first half the girls knew they didn’t play to their potentialknocking over just one point from play, with Barryroe taking theirchances more and scoring 8 points with 2 from very good frees. Noexcuses, but the girls had a very long season and a lot of the team werecarrying injuries, which hampered them from getting stuck into thegame. A serious talk on the side line at half time gave the girls their sec-ond wind and they came out all guns blazing for the second half, unfor-tunately the scores just didn’t come and Barryroe were able to take theirchances. There was some stand out performances from the ever consi-tant Roisin O’Keefe who started in wing forward but was moved to cen-tre forward to keep Barryroes centre back at bay, it was then when thetables started to turn for Youghal but unfortunately it was too late.Captain Niamh Quill also had a tremendous second half spurring on herdefence and running through the mid field giving some great ball in tothe forwards. It wasn’t to be for Youghal Minors this year but they are encouraged inthe fact that the majority of the team has 3 years left in minor and theywill only loose one player for next year. Chloe Daly, Ashling Siochru, Amy Motherway, Norah Sheehan, JayneWalsh, Michaela Dalton, Shannon Watson Niamh Quill, LeahBroderick, Roisin O’Keeffe, Shannen Bulman Joyce, Suzie Fitzgibbon,Alannah Finn, Sally Ann Quill, Emily Roche. Subs used Ellie Budds for Sally Ann Quill (half time) The Camogie team is now on a well deserved break until January wherethey will contest the Junior B division and hopefully the success of 2010will carry on to 2011. The Football is in full swing every Wednesday at7.30 leading up to Christmas so the fitness wont be too bad when theyreturn. Next on the calendar is the Annual GAA and Camogie DinnerDance which promises to be bigger and better than last year and withthe way the tickets flew out it looks like that is in no doubt!!

Stay Safe in the Kitchen this Christmas
ARE you sure you know how to prepare your turkey thisChristmas? The Food Standards Agency says many of usdon't and poor preparation and cooking can lead to food poi-soning.
December is the worst month of the year for food poison-ing. One in five of all cases can be traced back to under-cooked poultry such as chicken or turkey. So here are someof the things the FSA wants to warn against: - Don't cook the stuffing inside the turkey. This can preventeither from cooking through properly, so they should becooked separately instead. - Do not wash the turkey before cooking: this can spreadbacteria around the kitchen and lead to cross-contamination.Correct cooking will kill all bacteria. - Ideally a frozen turkey should be defrosted in the fridge. Two thirds of people defrost at room temperature but againthis can cause problems. - Cook your turkey for 18 to 20 minutes per pound inweight. An undercooked turkey can result in food poisining.
Christmas dinner is the biggest meal many of us will cook. We're often preparing meals that we wouldn't normallymake - and we frequently buy more food than we can storein the fridge.
The FSA’s head of microbiology says, "The ad campaignencourages people to think about how to prepare, cook andeat safely, most food poisoning incidents are easily avoidedand with a little bit of extra thought everybody can enjoy thefestive season."
One of the problems is catering for higher numbers, theaverage Christmas cook will be serving dinner for at leastseven people. And we all seem to be guilty of buying a big-ger turkey than necessary, the average weight of theChristmas bird is 12 pounds and that's enough to feed up to18 people, but however big it is, you should use up all left-overs within 48 hours.
But the agency's advice is simple: plan a realistic amountof food, store raw meat in the bottom of your fridge, washutensils used on raw meat and make sure the bird is fullythawed and cooked thoroughly to ensure you stay healthythis Christmas.

The sound of a crackling fire. The joy of newly fallen snow. Theanticipation of Santa Claus. The smell of a cedar tree. The taste ofa freshly baked Christmas cookie. At its very essence, Christmasis a holiday that excites our senses. How things sound, look, feel, smell, and taste evoke memories of holidays past, flooding us withemotions. The best way to re-create these memories -- and to cre-ate new memories for our families and friends -- is to surroundourselves with things that remind us of the season. Decorating isone of the easiest ways to accomplish this. Whether you are plan-ning a small get together or a large party, decking your home inseasonal splendor will satiate the senses and fill all your guestswith holiday spirit. The Colors of Christmas: Christmas is all about color. Glowingstrings of lights, festive stockings, and beautifully wrapped giftstake center stage. The colors you choose to emphasize in yourChristmas decorations can impact the feelings they evoke.Consider your goals -- icy and intense, cozy and traditional, mod-ern and fresh, elegant and luxurious -- before deciding on a colorscheme.Cool blue looks icy and cold, like the light of winter after a heavysnow has settled. The spectrum ranges from pale blue so light itshimmers to shocking cobalt. Whether you choose to use variousshades all together or stick with one main color, blue will electri-fy and intensify your decorating scheme. White or silver is oftenadded to enhance the decor; mixing in greenery and other naturalscan also accentuate the various hues of blue.Seeing red -- and green: Conjure up memories of Christmaspast, and you likely envision a holiday decked out in red andgreen. These colors are synonymous with Christmas; they're thetraditional colors most often associated with the season.Technically, red and green work well together because they areopposite each other on the color wheel.Throw a great Christmas Party. Happy Holidays!

Get creative with yourChristmas tree!
NOW there's no excuse for tired, old decorations! The Christmastree is often the centre-piece of seasonal decoration in any houseor workplace. Here’s a few festive tips.Top Tip When picking a tree always bang the stem on the ground, you willalways have the odd needle shed but be wary if too many are lost. This is a sign the tree has been cut too early and is already dryingand dying.
So, how will you decorate your Christmas tree - in the latest styleand colours? Or will it be a case of dragging out the tree from theloft and hoping you don't smash too many baubles in the process? If it's the latter then it might just be time to consult our top tips onhow to get the most from your Christmas tree. The real thing versus artificialFirst, decide on live or artificial. Although most of us love the realthing it’s sometimes not practical. There are many very good arti-ficial trees available, although in my experience you get what youpay for and it’s probably worth investing in a quality tree that willlast for several seasons. If you really can’t begin to enter the joysof Christmas without the smell of a real tree wafting around thehouse, then pick a live tree. Picking a treeThis couldn’t be easier! Go to the nearest supplier and choose apretty tree. Before buying, it is always a good idea to measure upto ensure that the tree fits in your pot or living space, that the tree’sin good health. Choose your tree carefully You should also decide if your tree will be in a cool area, or in awarm centrally heated one. If you are likely to have it in a central-ly heated house, I would advise you to buy one of the high needleretention trees available. These trees are either Nordman fir,Noble, Blue Spruce, or Frazer or White Firs. These will usually bepre-cut, but for the best results will need to be cut again and stoodin water immediately. 'Preserving' your treeThe easy method for this is to purchase a self-watering tree stand, available in heavy metal or plastic. Your tree can then be put inwater as soon as it’s cut and can be topped up throughout theChristmas period. Alternatively stand your tree in a bucket or dec-orative planter and top up with gravel. This will steady the tree andalso allow you to water it. If you have a cooler area, a Norway firChristmas tree, which generally is a little less expensive then thehigh needle retention trees, should do well. Try to get one withroots and pot it into a sandy compost mix to ensure it keeps its nee-dles for as long as possible. Always leave your tree in a cool areauntil you are ready to decorate it.

CHRISTMAS - TIPS TO REDUCE THE STRESS Christmas is typically one of the most stressful events of the year. The expense of buying gifts, the pressure of last minute shoppingand the heightened expectations of family togetherness can allcombine to undermine our best intentions. Some practical sugges-tions can help you reduce your 'Christmas stress'.Budgeting for ChristmasFor many of us, the Christmas aftermath includes massive creditcard bills that can take months to clear. Christmas doesn't have tobe a financial headache if you plan ahead. Stress reduction strate-gies include: As early as you can in the New Year, work out a rough budget ofexpected Christmas costs. Don't forget 'hidden' expenses such asfood bills and overseas telephone charges. Calculate how much disposable income you have between nowand Christmas. A certain percentage of this can be dedicated eachweek (or fortnight or month) to covering your expected Christmascosts. Don't be discouraged if the amount seems small. If you save$5.00, $10.00 or $20.00 per week over a year, it can provide youwith a hefty nest egg. If your nest egg isn't enough to cover your estimated expenses, perhaps you may need to refigure your Christmas budget to a morerealistic amount. If you have trouble keeping your hands off your Christmas nestegg, consider opening a 'Christmas Club' account.PresentsIf you have a large circle of extended family or friends to buy giftsfor, it can be very costly. You might be able to reduce the stress andcost of Christmas for everyone if you suggest a change in the wayyour family and friends give presents. For example, you couldsuggest that your group: Buy presents only for the children. Have a Kris Kringle, where everyone draws a name out of a hatand buys a present only for that person.
Our under 13 team completed the double when they added theunder 13A East Cork football title to their Hurling title. Aghadahosted the under 13 football last Saturday. In the first round weplayed Midleton and the result was never in doubt as O Neillswere always on top in a one sided game. Our forwards were on form and took full advantage of the lionsshare of the possession. Midleton battled away but were no matchfor O Neills on the day. Youghal were up next in the semi-final butfared no better against a confident O Neills side. Again the for-wards and midfield were on top and kept the score board tickingover and again ran out easy winners. In the other semi-finalAghada and Glanmire finished level but Glanmire came out on topafter extra time. O Neills did not have it all their own way in thefinal. The first half was tight with the O Neill backline workinghard to repel the Glanmire forwards who were playing some nicefootball. In the second half O Neills played some lovely football andcoverted that to scores. When Glanmire had a goal disallowed fora square ball any chance of a fight back was gone and title of EastCork champions was O Neills again.Team play and work rate wonthe day and nobody displayed that better than the Motherwaytwins Mark and Eoin. No matter where they were asked to playthey gave their best. Our Captain Cillian Broderick thanked all theteams who took part, especially Glanmire for the great game in thefinal. He thanked Aghada for hosting the tournament and his men-tors for the work they put in.This is a remarkable achievement for this talented group of lads asthey achieved the double at under 11 as well. Fr O Neills JuvenileClub are very proud of their positive approach to training and thisreflects in their play. The panel; Ryan Kenneally, Cal Hegarty,Mark Motherway, Adam Harrington, Michael Millerick, DanielHarrington, Sean O Connor, Eoin Motherway, Cillian Broderick,Colm Swayne, Conor O Driscoll, Adam Kenneally, Billy Dunne,Declan Dalton, Oisin Murphy, Jason Murphy, Gerard Millerick,Patrick Flannigan, Colin (Geogie) Sloane. Next weekend wewish the best of luck to our under 11 footballers as they attemptthe double, no pressure lads. Indoor hurling continues for theunder 8 and under 10 panels.

Ah yes, the winter!!! Unfortunately we have been fast forwarded intothe depths of winter in a shot, with the clocks and the weather conspir-ing to spiral us quickly into dark days and darker evenings. Not greatfor GAA addicts, but some of us kept going regardless!U-10 Hurling Parish Leagues: Round 3 of our Under 10 HurlingParish Leagues for 2010 saw two great games on Saturday last. RichieLong's Yellow team made it 3 wins out of 3 with some terrific scoringwhen they overcame Barry Motherway's Green team. The game wasvery even in the first third but Darragh O'Connor, Owen Cosgrove andJames Kent helped to keep the Yellows in front in the second period,a lead which they held through the final third, despite the best effortsof Danny Cunningham, Olan Broderick and Darragh Geary. In thesecond game, a mighty battle ensued from the first whistle, and at thefinal whistle Adrian Galvin's Red team and Dylan Hogan's Blue teamwere level at 5 goals each. Liam Hoogstad, Paul Delaney and RobbieTreacy ran themselves to a standstill for the Blues, while CiaranLeahy, Cathal Fitzgibbon and Daniel Lucey contested every ballfiercely for the Reds. Well done to all 4 teams - we play our semi-finals and finals on Sunday next (14th) from 10.30 to 12.00 - best ofluck to everyone.U-8 Hurling: Our Under 8's began their indoor training in Killeagh onTuesday last and this will continue from 5.30 for the next few weeks, with Alan, Adrain, Johnny and Donie at the helm. Bígí ann!U-11 Indoor Hurling: On Monday last, All Saints Day saw the com-mencement of our Under 11 Indoor Hurling season in Youghal GAAClub. In Group 1, there were wins for Jamie Landers' Green team andDaniel Hickey's Yellow team, while in Group 2, from 7.00 to 8.00,Dean Ward's Green team and Sean Walsh's Yellow team were victori-ous. Maybe this week the Reds and Blues will have their revenge!Congratulations: This Inch Rovers team are a determined lot!Despite having to face into a marathon journey (a 600-mile round trip)to the far reaches of North Donegal, these heroic players managed tosecure a hard-earned 3 point win over their hosts, and qualify for theAll-Ireland Senior Football Final, which will probably be played inearly December. An added incentive for this year is that it's Carnaconof Mayo, who beat Inch Rovers in the 2008 final, who are their finalopponents. Go girls, bring home the All-Ireland this time - we are veryproud of ye!AGM: Yes, that time of year again. The AGM of Killeagh GAA Clubtakes place in our new clubhouse on this Thursday (11th) at 8.00 p.m.,while it will be the turn of Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA club onThursday 25th (time to be confirmed). THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM - Sunday 07th NovemberWith the bad weather forecast for Sunday afternoon and night, itwas good to see the large turnout for our usual Sunday morningclub spin. A group of 14 gathered at Moby Dicks and departed at9.00am for one of our regular routes. Down the bog road we head-ed in glorious sunshine for Ballymacoda. From there we climbedover to Garryvoe and rolled well through Shanagarry and Cloynebefore enjoying the scenic route around East Ferry. From there wecarried on through Ballinacurra and stopped for the Coffee at theMidleton roundabout Garage. Re-freshed and re-fuelled, we head-ed back the main road through Castlemartyr and Killeagh beforearriving back in Youghal for 12 0' clock with a refreshing 70kmcompleted.A fine group of 10 also gathered at Moby Dicks for the 10 0' clockgroups weekly spin. They also took in a similar route to the earliergroup by heading down the bog road to Ballymacoda. From therethey rode onto Ladysbridge and took the back road to Ballinacuura. They also stopped for the refreshments at the Midleton roundaboutGarage and well they were full of their coffee and cake, they head-ed back the main road through Castlemartyr and Killeagh beforearriving back in Youghal for 12:30 with an eventful 50km complet-ed. Ride of the day went to Skoby though as he was the only onenot to get his hands dirty while fixing his puncture. We will get youa pair of rubber cloves for the next spin Skoby. The ladies branch of Youghal also had their maiden voyage lastSaturday morning when a group of 3 departed Moby Dicks at 9.00am for a leisurely spin around East Cork. Again with the sun shin-ning, they rode down to Ballymacoda and Ladysbridge before stop-ping in Castlemartyr at the Village Greengrocers for an injection ofwell earned coffee. Fully loaded, they returned to Youghal viaKilleagh for 11:30 with a fantastic 35km in the legs. Well done tothe lovely ladies.Club AGMOur Club AGM took place last Wednesday the 3rd of November atthe Holy Family Church. YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB
Youghal Seconds have a great home winThe Second XV had a great win at home against Carrick on Suir. They made the long journey to Youghal short players and that wasthe sign of a commeted team. But Youghal started the game andreally ran riot.Youghal took control from the word go and con-trolled the line-outs and the scrums.Carrick had no answer for thepace in which Youghal were running at them and within minsYoughals Alan Coughlan went in for the first try of thegame.More and more Youghal hit them hard from all angles andagain Youghals Killian Daly scored a great try and then convertedit himself to make it 12-0 to Youghal. With some great ruckingagain Youghal commanded the first half with another try from IanWhite.Which was converted again by Killian Daly. And with a minto half time again the pressure paid of with a try from John Flavinand converted again by Killian Daly.So half time score was 26-0.Second half started again with Youghal taking control again hit-ting carrick from the word go.With the line out going well forYoughal and a Mikey Tobin in for a great try and it was convertedagain to make it 33-0.The backs then started to do a bit of runningof there own to see Frahill O Conner score a great try and that wasalso converted by Killian Daly.Carrick then got a try of there ownand that also was converted.Only ten mins left and yet the pres-sure paid off for Youghal again to see Coner Lane score anothertry and converted by Killian Daly again. And just when Youghal taught it was all over Carrick scoredanother try and missed the kick so that was the end of a great homegame for Youghal.Well done the players and coaches of theSecond XV and keep up the training.Youghal Lose League Game at Home 26-12With the weather holding off and the sun even shinning Youghaltaught it was going to be a great day for the home team. But it wasnot to be. The game started well for both teams as it was veryintertaining Rugby from both Youghal and Kanturk. The scrumswent well for both teams and so did the line outs. Both teams com-manded there own and the break down in Rucks andmauls.Youghal put on the running pressure with a great try fromJonathan Ormonde. The conversion was missed and let Youghal inthe driving seat. But silly penalties were to follow from Youghalto see Kanturks Darragh Meade kick over two before half time.Sothe half time score was 6-5 to Kanturk.Second half started and ten mins into it seen Kanturks Peter Early score a great try.Youghalthen made some basic errors and it seen Brian O Neill of Kanturkscore again and this time it was converted by DarraghMeade.Youghal put alot of pressure after that last error and it seena great try again from Gary McArdle and it was converted byKeith Mccarthy.Kanturk again came out fighting and again due tobounce of a ball seen Peter Early of Kanturk get his second try.Theconversion was missed but in the dying mins Kanturks DarraghMeade got a great drop goal to make it 26-12. It was a game thatYoughal should have at least got alosing bonus point out of .Butwith some hard training Youghal hopes to get rid of these errors and up the run in to Christmass. So unlucky to the first XV and letskeep up the training same time and same place .

Results and Upcoming Fixtures. The following are the results and upcoming fixtures:-First up we had a good few athletes who headed off toCarrignavar for a Cross Country race. This was over 6k in a toughand hilly course. For a lot of our athletes this was their first CrossCountry race but did they do well. First home we had NoelCurtain closely followed by Marty O'Keeffe, Martin O'Brien andMossie Cahill. Then we had Martin Drake and closely behindhim we had Sylvie O'Mahony George Bulman, Michael "pocketrocket" O'Mahony, John O'Mahony and then by WilliamO'Mahony. These athletes were all running under the title ofnovice runners as this was their first event but a good few of themwon county medals in the team events, first we had Noel Curtain,Marty O'Keeffe, Mossie Cahill and Martin O'Brien but they areseasoned campaigners and elite athletes. A special word ofthanks must go to the over 50 team of Sylvie O'Mahony, Michael"pocket rocket" O'Mahony, John O'Mahony, and team leaderGerogie Bulman, what a great race they had and deservedly wontheir county medals, even though when the came home they want-ed to beep their horns around the streets like they thought theywere under 14 county medals in their GAA days. But we willleave them off! Not forgetting well done to William O'Mahony. Is there any stopping this man who won a medal in the over 60'scatagory as well. Also well done to Niamh Lynch on finishing2nd on a shorter course but in doing so she was picked to repre-sent Cork in the Munster intermediate Cross Country event.Next up was the Dublin City Marathon I think we had three clubrunners first home was two of our more recently joined athletes ofthe club (blow ins!) Stephen and Ricky Devereaux, well done toStephen on running a great race in a great time in knocking a bigchunk out of his time that he did it in last year it must be the newhair cut. Another word of praise must go to Anne Moloney(Marathon Anne) on successfully completing her thirteenthmarathon and I think has the record now for most marathons runby a Youghal AC athlete (open to correction as ususal...)Well done also to all who completed the Emer Casey run held inBrockwell Park recently run in conjunction with Herne HillHarriers in London, don't have any results in of any Youghal ACathletes but well done to all who took the trip over.On the 31st of October there was another Cross Country event inCloyne this however was not for novices or people who think theyare good athletes, this was for the Big Boys. But two of our small,Big Boys completed this tough course in 32nd place in a verygood time of 42.28 came in Martin O'Brien. Then in 40th placewe had Mossie Cahill in a time of 45.34. Well done and wellcompeted.Next up on November the 2nd we had the 2nd race in the EastCork series they had 155 athletes taking part which was a bignumber for this event. Two athletes to mention was Martin Drakewho had a very good run in 11.15, closely pushing him all the waywas Niamh Walsh in 11.35.On a personal note congratulations to Kevin O'Reilly on his 40thBirthday which was held in Ladysbridge and good few of usdecided to partake in the celebrations. We were all having a greatnight and then someone mentioned "is there anyone doing theWaterford half marathon on December the 11th?" then the excite-ment started which shouts of "i'll do it if you'll do it!" "you cantrun across the road never mind a half marathon" "you'l get a nosebleed if you go past 6 miles" but as we realised the hour was goingback on the clock we cancelled the taxis we'd ordered and endedup ordering a bus down to Waterford for the half Marathon onDecember the 11th - Thanks Kevin! The only sour note of thenight was that Georgie was not left go back home in the car thathe traveled in with shouts of "I'm not left in cos I'm not an eliteathlete" but we all really knew he wanted to travel back withMichael "pocket rocket" O'Mahony to arrange more secretSaturday morning training.Anyway here are a list of the up coming fixtures:-
On Sunday the 21st of November at 11.00 you have the CorkBHAA Inniscarra 4 mile road race.Tuesday the 23rd at 7.30pm you have the East Cork 3k, the thirdin the series. On Saturday the 11th of December you have theWaterford AC half Marathon and also the Clonakilty 10k, halfMarathon and Marathon. On Sunday the 12th December you havethe Cork Simon 4 mile road run.

Tell her I love her and miss her,And when she turns to smile,

The host club did amagnificient job in laying out the course ands weather conditionswere glorious. The day got off to a great start for the juveniles tosee a big turnout of our senior men and lady members competingin the County Novice and Masters Championships. Well done toall those who participated and especially for their big medal haul. They provided great encouragement to our juveniles who lined outon completion of the adult races. The girls U9 was the first race of the day. Lucy O'Keefe who hadjust supported her parents Marty and Mary in the Novice/Mastersrace ran an outstanding race throughout and finished in 4th placewinning her first bronze county medal. Also in this race KerryBarrett ran brilliantly and was so unlucky to finish just outside ofthe medal positions in 9th place. The Boys U9 team included Christian Coughlan 13th, TirnanPower 17th, Evan O' Keefe 21st, Bill Gillman 31st, CianNicholson 35th and AJ Brophy 37th. The lads all did very well allfinishing very well; most of these lads have just started trainingand this was a great performance from them. The Girls U11 had five girls in action. First home was LatishaMoriarty in 21st place; she was followed closely by KarynnCollins 30th, Aine O' Regan 31st and Tirna Cahill in 51st place. The girls were unlucky not to be in a medal position. All did verywell in a very large field. The Boys U11 team was led home byKillian Nolan in a fantastic 2nd place. Killian had a tremendousrace and has shown tremendous improvement over the last year.He won his first individual silver county medal. He was followedby Darragh Moran in 11th place. Darragh is showing goodimprovement in every race and this is his first season in crosscountry. Next in were the U10 lads running up an age and scoringvery well; Peter Buckley did very well to come in 14th followedby Matthew Cody in 16th, Jake McCarthy 17th and RyanMcCarthy in 30th place. This was an outstanding race by all andit was brilliant to see the lads coming in so close together. Thescoring was good enough to win 2nd team prize and all the ladswon silver team medals.Jennifer Hennessy ran her usual consistent race up front; she hadto battle it out with a Bandon girl but Jennifer went up a gear andfinished very strongly to win the county title. Next in was EmilyO' Keefe also running a good race finishing in 8th place just out-side the individual medals. To complete the scoring Jayne O'Sullivan finished well in 15th place and Tara Murphy in 21st place. Both of these girls were running up an age and this is also theirfirst season. Well done girls on winning 2nd team prize and allgirls won silver team medals.Fearghal Curtin who is starting to show good form also ran a superrace going into an early lead having got the better of the Leevaleand Doheny's lads; he increased the lead and came in very strong-ly to win the U13 county title having won the U14 title the previ-ous Sunday. The Girls U17 team included Ciara Broderick Farrell,Emma Flavin, Faye O'Brien and Trisha Curtin. Ciara showedmuch improved form on the previous Sunday and finished well in7th place just outside of the individual medals. She was followedby Emma Flavin in 9th place, Faye O'Brien in 12th and Trisha whocompleted the scoring in 16th place. The girls won gold countyteam medals. Well done!Overall the club was very happy to have won three sets of teammedals and to have two County title winners and four individualmedal winners and lots of very enouraging performances.MUNSTER EVEN AGES CROSS COUNTRYMatthew Cody wins Cork inter county silver medal in Boys U10
Killian Nolan wins Cork inter county bronze medal in Boys U12 Fearghal Curtin and Adam Curley win bronze individual medalsand Cork gold inter county medalsThe Munster Even ages Munsters was held in Carrigadrohid nearMacroom on Sunday 17th October. Again the weather wasextremely mild making conditions more enjoyable. However thecourse was extremely hilly and very sloping thus making racingvery tough especially in the older age groups. The U10 girls sawTirna Cahill, Ciara Leahy, Caoimhe Barry and Kerry Barrett inaction. Kerry was the first scorer coming in 54th place and indeedrunning in her first Munsters. Next in was Ciara Leahy runningwell in 60th place and Caoimhe Barry who showed muchimproved form finishing in 75th place and Tirna Cahill to conclude scoring in 113th place. It was a huge field and all girls did verywell. The Boys U10 team had Matthew Cody, Peter Buckley, JakeMcCarthy, Dean Savage and Ryan McCarthy in aAction. First inwas Matthew Cody in 14th place; this was good enough to win thefourth Cork medal in the Inter-County section. Jake McCarthy ranwell to finish 24th and was so unlucky to miss the Cork medal byone Cork position. Peter Buckley finiSshed well in 35th position,Dean Savage also did well in 62nd and Ryan McCarthy ran well tofinish in 68th place in his first Cross Country season. The teamfinished in 5th which was so unlucky for the lads!' The U12 Girls team was led home by Latisha Moriarty in 62ndplace. She was followed by Aine O' Regan in 75th place and JayneO' Sullivan in 79th and Tara Murphy in 87th place in a very largefield. Killian Nolan who was running up an age had a very coura-geous race to finish in a god 21st position. Killian was the fourthscorer on the Cork team which came fourth in the inter-countydivision. Killian won a Munster bronze Cork team medal and heis now eligible to run on the Cork team in the All Irelands in Derryon 28th November. Darragh Moran who was also running up anage had a great race to finish in 59th position. This was Darragh'sfirst Munsters and he can be very proud of this placing.Lauren Murphy was our only cmpetitor in the Girls U14 race.Lauren was also running up an age and finished in 78th position.Lauren will run with her team in the U13 Munster race inCharleville on 7th November. Adam Curley and Fearghal Curtinthe latter who was running up an age both competed tremendous-ly well in a very experienced and fast field. Fearghal and Adamwere at the back of a large group of 16 athletes in the first 1200mand both lads worked their way through the field with Fearghal fin-ishing in 3rd and Adam in 11th place. Both of these athletes wonbronze Munster individual medals and they also won gold Corkteam medals as the Cork scorers did very well in this race. BothFearghal and Adam will now represent Munster and Cork teams inthe All Irelands in Derry on 28th November next.We had two competitors in the Girls U16 race; Faye O' Brien andNiamh McCarthy. Faye finished in 39th place and Niamh in 40thplace over a gruelling distance of 4000m. The girls narrowlymissed out on the Cork team qualification for the All Irelands. Both girls are improving with every race. EAST CORK CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS - There was no rest for our athletes who had to turn out to competein the East Cork Cross Country Championships in Carrignavar on24th October. This was the 4th consecutive Sunday for many. However the club were missing quite a few athletes because ofholiday commitments. Well done to those who participated andindeed there were some fantastic performances. Well done to new-comers Niamh O' Brien, Clodagh Mulhaire, Eoin O' Brien, RachelCarey and especially Sarah O' Sullivan who won the U15 race onher first outing. All our athletes did very well and a special men-tion to Latisha Moriarty who ran a very courageous race up frontin the U11 race leading throughout and who only got beaten in thelast 200 metres, to Killian and Darragh Moran who were outstand-ing in the Boys U11 race and to Jennifer and Emily in the G/13race, to Emma Flavin and to the Hennessy brothers Aaron andSean in the U17 races. Youghal 0 V 3 Young Munster; Women's AILSunday, 17 October 2010,The score-line might suggest a boring game but both sides playedtheir part in an absorbing game between two very evenly matchedsides. The Young Munster pack made it difficult for the sea-sidersfrom the off, winning a majority of possession and as a result, were able to dictate the play. Their physicality was matched by thehome team particularly in the bruising confines of the front rowwhile some superb tackling by, among others, Deirdre Fitzgeraldand Karen O'Mahoney left the Limerick girls in no doubt as to thescale of the job that confronted them. The bulk of the play wenton between the 22's and the only real scoring opportunity in thefirst half fell to Youghal when Young Munster were penalised aftersome inventive running from backs and forwards nearly openedthe visitors defence. Unfortunately, Kellie Faul's shot was narrow-ly wide. The fierce, forward dominated, battle was where thisgame was going to won and lost, with the lighter Youghal eightgaining several turn- over's. Half time arrived with the scores levelat 0-0 aside. The second half was more of the same apart from thefact that it was the Limerick team that were awarded the penalty. This was converted and proved to be the only difference betweentwo teams that kept up the intensity for the full 80 minutes.Numerous attempts to land the killer blow were attempted by bothsides but defences were in control all through. The score at full-time was Youghal-0 Young Munster-3. With such evenly matchedsides either would have been worthy of the win but all credit toYoung Munsters for taking their chance when it came theirway.Team: J.Ryan, K.Faul, T.Coady, J.Arnott, U.Fitzgerald,K.O'Mahoney, D.Fitzgerald, C.O'Flaherty, J.Barry, S.Fitgerald,C.Griffin, S.Hogan (Capt) K.Sheehan, L.Barry, T.Jayawardene, S.O' Sullivan, N.O'Regan.

FERMOY NISSAN ANNOUNCES FURTHERDISCOUNTS FOR SCRAPPAGE CUSTOMERS
The Parents Council of Gaelscoil Choráin wish to thank the peo-ple of Youghal for their generous support. Down through the yearswe have had many fundrasiers i.e. cake sales, Christmas raffles, coffee mornings, greyhound racetrack night and a golf classic.Your generous support has enabled us to begin the new school yearwith interactive whiteboards for all classrooms.Speaking to Muinteoir Julie, sheexplained how the interactive white-board works. The interactive white-board is basically a giant touchscreencomputer for the classroom. We use itevery day, sometimes for a whole classor maybe just to look up a picture onthe internet or play a song. The chil-dren love to listen and watchstories/nursery rhymes because thepictures are large and colourful and thesounds and music add to the overall experience. We also playgames for maths and literacy like snap, jigsaws and matching butthe main difference is that the children can come up to the largescreen and interact with the game and play as a whole class. Nextweek we start our first readers and I will be able to put the pagesof the book up on the large screen so we can all practice our read-ing and words together. The IWB is a fabulous teaching and learn-ing resource and we are all so grateful to have them in our class-rooms. Go raibh mile maith agaibh. We realise that there is a lot of demands on people but we wouldappreciate your continued support in the future.
