WELCOME FROM THE PROGRAMME CHAIR

When I was asked to be the programme chair for 2019, I was humbled and delighted - I still am! I’ve been coming to EuroSTAR since 1999, and this community is like a family to me. Supportive, caring, sometime arguing, always learning from each other, always welcoming new members, finding new ways to interact and grow. This community has helped me to work better, to work well.

And thus, I chose this year’s theme: Working Well

That’s what we want to deliver. The software, technology, products and services that we design, build and test: whatever they are, we want to deliver them working well. And to meet that purpose, we need to think about how we work well; our practices, our people, and our challenges. To build you a great conference for 2019, I’m looking for your stories about your experiences of Working Well under several broad headings.

WORKING WELLTHEME BREAKDOWN

Our Purposeis to deliver products and services that are working well:

• UX & Meeting The Customers’ Needs Delivering products that are useful, provide a good user and customer experience, are good value, are worth having, trusted, support people in their tasks.

• Delivering Requirements & Stories Understanding what the customer wants, needs, expects, and working with the customer to ensure the requirements and user stories are well formed, understood, and managed through change and delivery.

• Measuring & Delivering Value Understanding whether we are delivering / have delivered what is expected, and how we measure and understand what we have done. Quantitative and qualitative measures, use of metrics, and how we report progress and problems.

Our practicessupport us in working well:

• Engineering, Craftsmanship, Methods & Lifecycles Using methodologies and lifecycles that support us to deliver the UX and customers’ needs, including agile methods, DevOps, using standards, iterative or sequential approaches - whatever is appropriate in our context.

• Approaches, Techniques & Types Of Testing Using approaches and techniques that are appropriate for our context, and support providing great UX, including exploratory testing, appropriate use of checking, black, grey and white box techniques, testing of software qualities such as performance and security.

• Tools & Automation Having the right tools for the job, applying them in properly, automating what is best automated, using tools to support us so we can concentrate on solving the engineering and crafts challenges and delivering what our customers need.

Our PEOPLEare working well:

• Skills & Knowledge Having the skills and knowledge to do our work, and includes both our own development and supporting our colleagues in the industry.

• Teams & Organisations People working together in groups applying our skills together, communicating, sharing our knowledge, understanding and learning together.

• Health & Welfare The health of the people delivering, using and affected by the software, product, services, technology that we deliver.

Our CHALLENGESFor working well NOW & IN THE FUTURE:

• Change, Growth, Transition & Evolution Changing our practices and tools, updating our skills and knowledge to embrace the changes around us - AI, machine learning, robotics, blockchain and whatever the future holds - we will need to continue working well by growing and transitioning to new ways of working.

• Ethics & Professionalism The products and services we supply, support and evolve are working well for society, for the environment, for everyone, everywhere…

• Working Unwell the opposite of working well is Working Unwell! This provides us with case studies, war stories and adventures that demonstrate obstacles overcome, as well as cries for help. Tell us about Working Well, by the contrast with your stories of Working Unwell: your risks, problems, failures, stress, illness, sick organisations, and failing teams. Not just those negatives, but also how you overcame them, what helped you, your team and your project move from illness to health.

I would encourage people to speak at EuroSTAR because of the really magnificent feeling of sharing your experience, of sharing your knowledge with a truly amazing audience who are there to learn from you.

It’s an amazing chance, go and do it, you will love it!

TESTIMONIALSThink about your message. It can be a simple and easy message. Use your own experience and also try to come up with a testing cycle. There are over 400 people trying to speak and you must stand out.

I have found speaking at EuroSTAR a highly rewarding experience. For a long time, I have had a specific interest area in testing (cognitive biases and human behaviour). However, although I had many thoughts on the topic, they lacked coherence and a unified message.

The whole process of submitting a proposal to a major international conference, getting accepted, then developing and delivering a talk to a standard suitable for a major conference by a given date is enormously helpful in forcing you to think through and clarify your ideas. Also, if you believe that your ideas have merit, but lack confidence or self-belief, speaking and getting feedback will give you evidence of the validity of your ideas.

Finally, as a speaker at EuroSTAR, you will find it much easier to make contacts, both during the conference and also afterwards, and it can raise your profile within the industry and your current organisation.

Andrew BrownSQS, United Kingdom

Just to go and try. Go for it. There are a lot of submissions but maybe when you least expect it you will get accepted - it happens!

Just submit your story and especially when it is an experience story as that is always nice for the audience to hear.
