let me tell you what happened, an illustrated archive of lebanon’s narrated history senior year design project fall 2015

In order to go forward, you need to know about the past. This disconnection that the post-Lebanese Civil War generation has from its very recent, bloody past is discomforting.

This project is a platform open to those who want to share their experience but also to designers who wish to illustrate these experiences.

The website offers the audience a variety of narratives dating anytime from 1975 to 1990, in Lebanon: narra-tives that may or may not be directly related to war events, narratives that will raise awareness about the real horrors of wars that are generally ignored, put aside and eventually forgotten. Because at the end of the day, people will be the first victims of any war.

Step One Signs on the floor, walls and benches Beirut, “Do you want to know what happened?” or “Some-thing Happened” in Arabic, English or French.

Step Two There’s an orange splash on the wall/floor where a story took place.

Step Three Flipbooks or postcards (with QR Code, on the back) are inside the orange folder on the wall

Step Four Scan the QR Code that takes you the website.

Step Five Five illustrated stories were to imagine what different designers would do if given a story.

Story 1: Aliya Khalidi was kidnapped. You go through the slide by clicking on the arrows (Left and Right).

Step Six Access website from a compouter for the full experience: stylized map of Beirut. The black bar at the top with the Logo, the Menu (gives you access to a Timeline and a Dictionary) and a Search button. You can search for stories by applying Filters.

Step Seven Download the app to be notified, based on your Geo-Location, of the stories around you, when new stories are uploaded to the website. The app is not the main attraction, the stories aren’t as visually elaborate as the website.

In May 2015, Lina Abyad, renowned Lebanese stage director, directed “Sleeping Gazelles” a moving, surreal play about the reality of the horror of Syrian refugees. It was all based on true stories.

I designed the poster, the program and everything that was required in terms of visuals. Given the harshness of the play, I wanted to soften it through the visuals, but to also fool the viewer who would not expect the play by using light pastel colors and the floral inspired pattern. However, if you look closely, you will notice elements that remind Syrian culture, politics and the crisis today: the barbed wired, the Matisse-like coral reefs and the Jasmine leaves.

Iranian graphic designer Homa Delvaray was invited to LAU to give a 3-day workshop to senior graphic design students.

The project was simple: represent Beirut the way you see it in a typographic poster. It was a group project.

We placed the letters freestanding letters of beirut in Arabic on a cart, because many people sell corns, vege-tables, shoes or cotton candy on carts in the middle of the city. Each letter has something that represents the city: old buildings, Shawarma, taxi...

KAFAS is a new play written by Joumana Haddad and adapted and directed by Lina Abyad.

Five women share their stories in the waiting room of a gynecologist. Five women from the Arab world, reduced by society to their respective vaginas, bravely reveal their chains, their frustrations, their anger; their sarcasm.

After all, we don’t need to look hard to find the Arab woman’s cage: it is between her legs. Society reduces her to it and imprisons her in it

Sawtohoo is a new play written by Jean Cocteau (The Human Voice, 1927) and translated, adapted and directed by Lina Abyad.

A woman, alone on stage is on the phone with her former lover. He is asking her to give him back his loveletters. The play discusses the issue of loneliness, loss, memories from the past and filling the void.

I created a display type inspired by the work of the architect, Renzo Piano. It’s a geometric font that consist of using many lines of different thicknesses and orientations in order to fool ones eye and thinking they are overlapping.

There is a short film presenting the typography avail-able on my behance account:

morph is a design magazine that discusses the recycle of the Seven Arts: how poetry is turned into music, how paintings influence fashion, theatre is modernized & finally old films are remade into new films.

Because the first issue was about France, it was only natural to use the iconic picture of Yves Saint Laurent who was influenced by different movement of art, design and architecture.

john cage, an auto-biographical statement editorial design spring 2014

This book is based on the autobiographical statement written by John Cage, the founding father of exper-imental music. I tried to imagine that I worked with Cage on the book, and the purpose was to create this neo-dada piece, filled with experimental type, collages and illustrations.

Sous Le Pont Mirabeau, a poem written by Guillaume Apollinaire, is a dark poem about losing his lover. The poem talks about the Pont (Bridge) Mirabeau that reminds him of his former lover, the passing of time and the loss of love.

Through this abstract pop-up book, I wanted to show the darkness of what he was going through. The poem was published in “Alcohol”, which goes to show sad and desperate he really was.

As for typography, I opted for a minimalist approach, with a play of sizes to create hierarchy.

The Innovation Factory Beirut is a three-story space to create, collaborate, and fabricate. The first thing that came to my mind was the Italian, Futurist movement during the early 20th century: constantly changing, moving, evolving; it’s also oriented towards technology and machines.

And out of it came out a typographical logo, based on movement, machine-like lines that couldn’t possibly be made by men. I also developed some stationary items and wayfinding system around the space.

Another point that I stressed on is the presence of Ara-bic in the logo: to be used for the cities, Beirut, Chekka and Kaslik.

HŌM Studios is a recently renovated 16-bedroom studios in the heart of Beirut. The name, which reads “home” in swedish, is inspired by the very scandina-vian style of the interiors of the room.

The logo itself is surrounded by walls that contain 4 openings as there are 4 rooms per floor. Luckily, the new owners kept the old tiles on the floor of the rooms and based on that we developped a series of patterns to be applied on different stationary items.

mini mezza travel pack packaging design dpring 2015

Anyone who comes to Lebanon always takes food back with them. They place it in tupperware which ends up ruining the food.

The Mezzas are served on an aluminum plate, that can be heated. They are placed in a cardboard box that is thick enough to resist shock and temperature change.

One large pack contains 6 connected cardboard boxes. The boxes fold onto one another to save space and be more resistant to shock. They can be detached from one another. There is also a handle on the side to make it deliverable. For this packaging, I have worked on three vegetarians Mezza.

I tried give it a feel of craftsmanship. The common colors are natural. Each food is color-coded: There is a play of typography whether it’s the font, the font size or the direction.

This line of cheese-based products was inspired by the lifestyle of modern 20-40 year olds who live alone. With their busy lifestyles, they have a hard time maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

These products look appealing, as they resemble cognac or whiskey bottle but they are also part of a healthy diet.

“Where can I find someone like you Ali?” is a play di-rected by Lina and starring Raeda Taha, and written by both.

In this monologue, she tells the story of her father, Ali Taha, who hijacked a plane, Sabena Flight 571 in 1972. The illustrations were projected on the back wall of the empty stage to accompany the actress.

She tells her story as the daughter of a Palestinian martyr who was taken under the wing of Yasser Arafet, but also of her aunt, Ali’s sister, who went looking for Kessinger hoping he will help her retrieve her brother’s body from the Israeli morgue, where he was kept for over 2 years.

burj el murr is alive motion design Spring 2015

There are two layers to this 5 second loopable GIF: the first is a black and white still image of Burj El Murr, an iconic tower in Beirut whose construction was never completed and was used for snipers during the Civil War, whereas the second is a modern, colorful lightshow.

This was my way of paying homage to the building, that’s just sitting in the center of the city.

Georges S’en Va (Georges is Leaving) is a 3-minute animation based on an interview conducted with my father, Georges Nassar, about his experience when leaving Lebanon in November 1975, a couple of months after the beginning of the Civil War.

He talks about the difficulties getting to the airport due to the dangers of the road, the services forbidding him to travel due to missing papers about him completing his military service...

The visuals, highly colourful and full of life, contrast strongly with the darkness of the story and the monot-onous tone of my father.

In May 2014, Lina Abyad, Lebanese stage director, presented her 2014 masterpiece, “Hayda Mech Film Masreh” or “This is Not an Egyptian Movie”.

I attended almost every performance as the week-long play tackled a subject that intrigues me, domestic violence against women. I started sketching on my Moleskine accordion.

26 ways living in lebanon can kill you Illustration & typography fall 2014

Starting with each letter of the alphabet, I imagined the different ways living in Lebanon could kill you.

This personal project was an one hand an illustration, typographical and composition exercise while on the other, a way to critically look at the country I live in.

Vogue Magazine teamed up with Joe Sabia and his camerman to create a special kind of interview with celebreties. In a single shot 5 mns video, Sabia follows the interviewee in their home or their workspace ask-ing them 73 either-or questions. The videos are published on Vogue’s Youtube Channel.

I loved them, they’re fun and witty, so I decided to write them all down, using different fonts, sizes, weights and directions.
