The Burton Joyce Neighbourhood Plan has taken an important step towards being reality after it was submitted to Gedling Borough Council for independent examination.
Burton Joyce Parish Council and a group of volunteers have put together the plan, which will influence any future developments that may take place in the village over the next 15 years.
The process started in April 2016 when an application by the parish council to designate the Parish of Burton Joyce as a neighbourhood plan area was approved by Gedling Borough Council.
A consultation period took place at the start of this year where local residents were able to give their views. This included a drop-in session in the village and an online questionnaire.
The vision of the plan states: “In 15 years’ time Burton Joyce will be relatively unchanged. The village’s identity and strong community
spirit, its natural beauty surrounded by greenbelt and safe environment being maintained.
“With a broad range of local facilities and pedestrian-friendly centre, it will be commercially attractive to existing and new businesses. Appropriate development, sensitively located and of quality, will be in keeping with the size and character of the
village, meeting the community’s demographic needs.”
The committee behind the plan said: “The aim is to reflect the wishes and aspirations of everyone. The production of this plan has not been easy. It has taken several years and lots of meetings but we think the effort is worth it to get a say in how Burton Joyce should grow over the next 10 years.”
Jessica Sherrin, parish clerk at Burton Joyce Parish Council, said: “A great deal of time and effort has been put into the whole process - by the steering group team led by councillor Terry Hazard and our consultant Helen Metcalf – in both the consultation with residents and writing the plan itself.
“The end result is a comprehensive and professional set of documents, which we are proud to be submitting for examination.
“The parish council gives its grateful thanks to all those involved in this mammoth effort so far.
“We look forward to completing the final stage of the process – the referendum.”
After the examination, the Neighbourhood Plan has to be voted on by residents of Burton Joyce.
Look out for the referendum date which will be advertised widely and is expected to be in the autumn.

Women in Burton Joyce and the surrounding areas are having better births thanks to a birth preparation method created by the Maternity Innovator of the Year, as named in prestigious industry awards held last month. Sian Gilmartin, from The Daisy Foundation, created a unique peri-natal support method that has helped tens of thousands of parents to prepare for positive birth and build their confidence.
Sian took the joint-title alongside Rachel Gardner of Sheffield charity Forging Families at the MaMa Conference awards in Glasgow. Katy Mogg has been teaching the Daisy method in the local area for over a year and has seen first-hand the amazing transformation Daisy classes can have on women.
Katy (pictured) said: “I see women who are utterly terrified of birth in the first class become calm and confident in just the space of a few classes and go on to have the positive birth that are right for them. It is so rewarding and makes this just the best job in the world.
“I couldn’t be prouder that Sian has been recognised in this way. Daisy teachers all over the country are seeing the difference that can be made to families when they feel confident, happy and relaxed in birth and parenting.”
Katy, a mother-of-two, teaches eight classes a week including parent, birthing, tinies and wrigglers. She juggles running
the business with her family commitments and says The Daisy Foundation gave her the flexibility to be her own boss and set her own hours while raising a family.
“The fact that Daisy teachers are mums too means that they know what it is like in those tough first years of parenting and I think that is the magic ingredient in Daisy classes,” Katy added.
Parents are flocking to Daisy Birthing classes for their unique mixture of active-antenatal teaching and unconditional non-judgemental support. Daisy Birthing is a ground-breaking active antenatal class that blends yoga-inspired movement with breathing techniques, birth hypnosis and traditional antenatal education to help women build their confidence as they prepare for labour. The Daisy Foundation is empowers all women to make informed choices that are right for them and their family.
As well as the yoga-based birthing classes teachers - who receive comprehensive in-depth training before they qualify and regular top-up professional development sessions to keep them up-to-date with the very latest in perinatal research - offer classes for mums and their birth partners to support them as they prepare for parenthood. To find out more send an email to Katy at [email protected] or telephone 07900 375619.

A new pavilion is being constructed next to the bowling green at the Poplars Sports Ground in Burton Joyce.
The Poplars Sports Ground is home to Burton Joyce FC, Burton Joyce Cricket Club, Burton Joyce Archers and Burton Joyce Bowls Club.
The exciting project was made possible thanks to a generous donation to the Burton Joyce Parish Council by the bowls
club and planning approval subsequently followed.
Burton Joyce Parish Council said that “grounds staff have been working hard ready for delivery of the pavilion later in the spring”.
The wooden pavilion is set to be completed at the end of June.
The sports ground comprises a state-of-the-art 3G all-weather seven-a-side pitch which converts
to two five-a-side pitches. There are also numerous full-size grass football pitches.
In addition, there’s a full-size cricket square, bowling green and a newly completed petanque terrain.
There are open-air facilities for keep-fit and other sports, as well as indoor facilities for pastimes such as yoga.

New pavilion being constructed at Poplars Sports GroundSeveral members of the Notts Gymnastics Academy made the journey to the Echo Arena, Liverpool for the 2018 British Championships. The team of young athletes returned home with an incredible total of 16 medals and numerous individual titles, providing great hope for the continued success of gymnastics in Nottingham.
Raekwon Baptiste, aged 15, led the medal charge with an amazing display of strength, power and excellent lines as he dominated the Men’s Artistic Under-16 British Championships. Rae counted just one major error across all six
routines, placing his hands down on landing of the hugely difficult double twisting double backwards somersault on the floor exercise. Recovering from an unexpected fall on his first apparatus, Rae showed maturity and composure beyond his years and delivered five other near-faultless routines to claim the all-around title, along with the individual apparatus golds on rings, parallel bars and high bar, with a solid routine on the pommel horse rewarded with a bronze medal.
In the Men’s Artistic Under-18 competition, 18-year-old Pavel
Karnejenko finished third in the all-round competition and was left to rue two errors on the pommel horse.
Pavel had fought back gallantly to take the lead heading into the final rotation. However, another fall on the final element on an otherwise superb parallel bars routine saw his grasp on the title slip away.
An ongoing ankle injury had hampered Pavel’s preparation, but there was some consolation in the final result, as he collected a silver medal for his efforts on floor and rings, with his high bar routine producing the highest score of the day for the gold medal.
Thirteen-year-old Liam Jury vaulted his way to a bronze medal in the Men’s Artistic Under-14 Vault final and recovered from a sluggish start to his all-around competition to finish a creditable 14th place.
Team-mate Alex Yoshina-Cash, aged 13, produced a near-perfect competition and earned himself a 10th place finish among the best 13 to 14 year olds in Great Britain, qualifying for the pommel final in the process. Oliver Kettleborough, aged 15, lit-up the arena with his unique style and eccentric choice
of leotard and 'Notts Blue' hair dye in the Men’s Disabilities Masters competition. The focus was very much on his gymnastics after the final piece of apparatus though as Oliver came up just short of the top spot on the podium with an incredible effort to take the all-around silver medal.
Oliver also celebrated gold on floor, rings and vault, with a silver on high bar. These results were made all the more special as Oliver was competing against athletes up to 10 years older than himself and the fact that he has only just recently recovered from a long injury lay-off.
Ramiyah Kofi (13) performed two near-perfect vaults as she won silver in the Women’s Artistic Junior Women’s Vault final, with a strong showing in the all-around competition earning Ramiyah a top-12 finish in Great Britain.
Thea Dane (14) had a flawless first British Championships having only qualified at the back end of 2017. An 11th-placed all-around finish was her reward and her stunning floor routine resulted in
Thea narrowly miss out on a medal, finishing fourth in the finals.
The academy was admirably represented across all four days of fierce competition by Isla Lees (13), Summer Hill (12), Tom Morley (17) and James Hodgson (19).
Meanwhile, 2012 Olympic bronze-medallist Sam Oldham unfortunately had to withdraw after four apparatus as he suffered a nasty-looking ankle injury on his vault landing.
A special mention must also go to Christine Tse (15) who only recently returned to full training after a broken finger and just in time to
take part in her final competition before retiring.
Academy performance director Adam Folwell was delighted to witness such a strong showing across the pinnacle of competition in Great Britain.
He told the Local News: “The team were obviously gutted for Sam after he got injured.
“Not having either of the Downie sisters available for competition because of recent injury setbacks was very different to normal.
“Much of the limelight and focus is naturally attributed to them.
“Our younger generation have stepped up to the mark though.
“They have shown our strength in depth and I can only see a very bright future ahead for these wonderful young athletes.
“Great credit must also go to the dedicated team of coaches, support staff and parents that make these wonderful results possible.”
Future is bright for up-and-coming Nottinghamshire gymnast stars

Teaching Force, a Nottingham-based education recruitment firm, has come up with a unique way to help address the local teacher recruitment back log. Hosting an event at a secret venue in Nottingham on 19th June, the firm aims to bring schools and teachers together in an informal environment; where hiring
managers and job seeking teachers can meet, chat and find the right fit.
Debbie Mell, head of recruitment at Teaching Force said: “Our event is a great way for teachers and hiring managers to get to know each other in an informal and non-committal capacity. We think this networking style event will help
dispel some of the myths about both cover staff and agencies and, more importantly, help both find the right fit.”
The teacher shortage is not just a local issue - it’s a national problem that is not set to be fixed in the short term despite recent government campaigning.
Debbie added “It’s no secret that there is national teacher shortage. We work hard every day on attracting the best of the best locally and work with lots of universities and colleges helping prepare student teachers for their future careers. But that’s the long game – what about now?
“We believe that the best way to address this issue is to better utilise cover and contract staff who tend to be highly experienced and eager, as well as look to make lasting appointments through a quality and rigorous recruitment process. This is where agencies are cost-effective.”
Schools and teachers are urged to contact Teaching Force to secure their place at this limited event, with places already booked by schools, large academy groups and experienced candidates.
The event will be held on Tuesday 19th June from 10am until 3pm at a secret venue in Nottingham.

Celebrating 50 years of being in business this year, Manor Antiques are firmly established as one of the most reputable and trustworthy local antique businesses.
Owner and proprietor Don Weston was born to be an antique dealer.
As a lad he always gravitated towards the junk shops and jumble sales where he grew up in Lenton.
Don told the Local News: “As soon as I was earning my own money - from a newspaper round when I was at school - I spent it all in junk shops.
“I loved the atmosphere and the characters that I encountered in those early days of learning my trade.
“I was always looking for quirky things. If I didn’t know what something was I would ask for information. I still enjoy finding out about things other people don’t know about. I like talking to people and discovering their history.”
Don’s collecting habit and growing expertise eventually inspired him
to set up his own business, Manor Antiques, in 1968. The continued growth of the business saw Don’s daughter Lisa join him 10 years ago and the father and daughter pairing haven’t looked back since.
Don continued: “We pay the best cash prices for silver articles and all types of jewellery.
“This including charm bracelets and wedding rings, paintings, brass & copper, porcelain & ceramics, pocket watches & clocks, antique furniture, clockwork toys, barometers, tea caddies, war memorabilia & medals, pianos, miscellaneous items of bric-a-brac, oriental ceramics & Royal Crown Derby porcelain.”
So, if you have items that you’re interested in selling, or are in need of a professional house clearance service, please call Don or Lisa on 0115 970 0088 to discuss your requirements and to arrange a free, no-obligation visit.
They have cash waiting for all your antiques. You can also visit their website by logging onto house-clearance-service.co.uk.

Sarah Edis has a passion for helping you on your dental journey Spoil your rugs this year with a trip to the spa!
Local cleaning specialists A&G Chem-Dry are offering a free collection and delivery service, when you book your rugs in to be cleaned at their ‘Rug Spa’.
What a great incentive to roll up your rugs, ready to have them collected, cleaned and returned to you, revived and refreshed.
A&G Chem-Dry, a family business, have been offering their customers high quality carpet, rug, upholstery and granite (worktop) cleaning services from their Nottingham base for the past 23 years.
In their specialist ‘Rug Spa’, the dedicated A&G Chem-Dry team lovingly care for your rugs.
The provide a unique range of cleaning and protecting treatments for your rug.
This process leaves them looking and feeling fresh, clean and healthy – and it can extend their life too.
Firstly, your rugs are measured and assessed for soiling and staining - and for odours, colour fastness and wear, etc.
Your treasured rug is then gently massaged with the highly effective specialist equipment, known as the RugBadger.
Using the power of over 40,000 harmonic vibrations/min, the RugBadger completely separates
heavy sediments and dry soiling from any rug.
Next, your rug is deeply and thoroughly cleaned using a process called The Natural®.
For your rugs, being cleaned and treated with The Natural® is like enjoying a refreshing mineral bath.
This unique, low-moisture process generates natural CO2 bubbles which penetrate the rug fibres,
dissolving remaining soiling and most stains quickly and thoroughly.
Depending on your requirements - and the use your rug is subjected to in your home - we can then pamper them further with a selection of additional treatments.
From anti-allergen to a bug-busting anti-bacterial treatment, to a protective stain-resistant finish.
As their Spa Break with us draws to an end, rugs are then groomed.
They are given a final quality control assessment and wrapped, ready to be returned to pride of place in your home.
Ring today for a rug cleaning quote and don’t forget – there’s free collection and delivery too.
Contact A&G Chem-Dry by calling 0115 989 4443.
You can find out more about their special rug cleaning service - or any other services they offer - by logging onto the website at rugcleaningnottinghamshire.co.uk.

Flaming June, well let’s hope so! It’s the first month of summer when you start to see the results of all the work done earlier in the year.
Although you can reap the benefits and really enjoy the garden, there are still some essential jobs that need doing if the rest of the summer is going to be a success.
Judging the best time to plant out tender flowers and vegetables is the key to summer success - not too early for frosts to kill or damage them and not too late to defer flowering and cropping.
Lawncare At this time of the year, lawn grass will be galloping into growth thanks to warm weather and moist soil from occasional showers. While the lawn expert will be mowing his grass twice a week to keep a perfect lawn in trim, the rest of us will probably find that cutting once a week will have to do.
If you have some extra time in the twilight to whip over the grass more frequently it's worth the effort. It
takes a lot less time because there are less cuttings to dispose of and it will be beneficial to encouraging a thicker lawn.
Don't scalp the grass when mowing. If you cut it regularly to around 2.5cm it will look greener, feel softer and eventually grow thicker than the lawn that is cut short to 1cm at irregular intervals.
Even better for thickening the grass up in summer is to feed the lawn. If you spot some weeds marring the beauty of your rich green grass,
give them a shot with a selective lawn weed killer. This will control all manner of broad-leaved weeds without damaging the grass.
Beds and Borders Complete the planting of tender bedding plants and tropical exotics that will beautify your garden this summer. If your soil is stony or sandy, the roots of these plants will need to be able to draw moisture and nutrients from the soil.
Watch all your flowering plants for the first signs of summer
pests. Sweet peas and roses will usually be first to show greenfly infestations and French marigolds will harbour the first of the caterpillars.
Tall plants such as delphiniums, dahlias and rudbeckia will only stay upright with the help of a stake placed firmly beside each plant and for the plant stems to be tied to these supports.
Patio Tubs & Baskets Now that the risk of frost is over, it's time to plant patio containers, tubs and hanging baskets with tender plants such as fuchsia, geraniums, regal pelargoniums and busy lizzies. Don't forget that the hard edges of containers are best softened with trailing plants.
If you would like help with any lawn or hard surface projects, don’t hesitate to call Greener Gardens on 0115 837 8439. We would be delighted to provide a no-obligation quotation. More detailed information can be found on our website at greenergardens.co.uk.
June Gardening Notes - by John Draper of Greener GardensAs spring changes into summer it may come as a surprise that it is not too late for local, independent lawn company Prograss to come and make a real difference to your lawn for the summer season.
An instant improvement can be seen after just one treatment and with each subsequent treatment we can further move the lawn forward improving it with every visit. How we do this is quite simple.
The first treatment requirements will be to start dealing with what we don’t want in the lawn which will be weeds, thatch and moss.
We would then work on what we do want which is the existing healthy grass and the aim is to green, strengthen and thicken it, so it starts to out-compete the weeds and moss rather than the other way round. It is important to remember grass is a plant and like any plant, if you give it food and nutrients it will respond positively.
The result is always an immediate improvement in the lawn. The commercial products that Prograss use are among the highest quality available and are child, pet and environmentally-friendly. If mechanical work (hollow tine
aeration and scarification) is required, this can be delayed until the autumn so as to not disrupt the lawn's appearance too much so it can be used as normal for most in the summer. Hollow tine aeration
is done using a machine which extracts thousands of cores out of the lawn. This process reduces the compaction of the lawn opening up the root zone allowing food, water and nutrients into the soil.
The grass roots then go down for the food, water and nutrients and like any plant a plant with a strong root is a healthy plant.
Scarification is done using a machine that has a powerful motorised rake and its aim is again to take out what we don’t want in the lawn, moss and thatch, and leave in what we do want which is the healthy grass.
Scrarifying properly is a highly-skilled job as the blades have to be set at the right height. Too high and not enough is taken out, too low and severe damage can be done to the lawn.
For mechanical work, Prograss use only the best quality machinery available which caters for all sizes of lawns small or large.
If you would like Prograss to come and do a free, no-obligation lawn health check and quote, please call us on 01949 837367 or visit us online at pro-grass.com.

The Nottingham Rowing Club Masters G coxed four of Dave Wregg, Tony Lorrimer, Steve Cuthbert, Peter Stasiuk and cox Claire McCready (pictured above) are celebrating after they won the Masters E/F/G coxed fours event over the 450-metre sprint course.
Their first-round opponents were old rivals Stourport. The crew had a handicap start because of the age difference, which they made full use of and had actually increased their lead after the first minute of the race.
They then cruised to the line allowing Stourport to close the gap, but it was a comfortable win by one length.
The final saw them up against an even younger crew from Hereford who were the winners from the Saturday regatta.
However, the race followed the same pattern as the previous race with the Nottingham crew crossing the line still two lengths ahead.
The crew enjoyed the day’s racing back on the river, reminding them
of memorable river regattas from 40 years ago.
Meanwhile, the club’s senior section went to the Olympic rowing course at Dorney to take part in Wallingford Regatta - one of the UK’s larger club regattas.
The women's coxed four of Madeleine Davy, Chantelle Johnson, Charlotte Bainbridge, Natasha Johnson and cox Sophie Jones (pictured below) won Club Fours after a close race with Llandaff in the final. The women's quadruple scullers came a close
second to Thames and the crew then split in to two double sculls that came second in both the challenge and club events.
The challenge double scull were narrowly beaten to the line by Katie Greves - an Olympic silver medallist in 2016 - and her junior international partner.
The men's challenge coxless four missed out on the final by 0.6 of a second after coming third in their semi-final. The squad now travels to Ghent Regatta to test themselves at international level.
Regatta season gets under way in style for Nottingham Rowing ClubThe first of the season’s sprint regattas took place this spring where amongst the usual races were those deciding the crew-boat - boats of two or four paddlers - selection for Team GB.
Paddlers from across the country came to test their mettle and Nottingham Kayak Club (NKC proved themselves once more to be a premier sprint club.
Despite repeatedly claiming retirement, Hayleigh Mason lived up to her well-deserved fantastic reputation in the back of a K2 with Sam Rees-Clark.
They were selected to represent Team GB in the ladies’ 500m. Sam also won a place in the ladies’ K4 500 metres.
Stelian ‘Norris’ Naftanaila paddled to an impressive victory in his K1 200m race and also won places in the K2 200m and K4 500m crews.
Those competing will take part in the ICF Senior Canoe Sprint Senior World Cups in both Hungary and
Germany - the results of which will determine selection for the Senior World Championships in August.
Impressively, Norris and Sam are both under 23, while Norris also bagged a place in the under-23s men’s K4 500m, with Sam winning a spot in the ladies’ K4.
Zyggy Chmiel and training partner Charlie Smith were the fastest U23 pairing over the longest distance, and are justifiably representing Team GB in the K2 1000m.
Norris, Sam, Zyggy and Charlie will be competing at the ECA U23 Canoe Sprint European
Championships taking place in Italy later in the year.
There was even more Nottingham Kayak Club success at the selection races for international individual sprint events.
Zyggy was selected to compete over 1,000m at the U23 European Champions in Italy.
He will also race over 5,000 metres at the Senior World Championship in Portugal.
There’s no doubt there’ll be plenty of Nottingham Kayak Club excitement across Europe this year.
If you want to have a go at kayaking or canoeing, a come-and-try-it session is held every Sunday from 11am until 1pm at the club on Trentside North.
