Dear Colleagues,

I hope you had a very enjoyable Summer and are ready and raring to go for the new Academic Year!

It is going to be a very busy year again and the Nottingham ASBM committee will be working hard to ensure you con-tinue to be supported with up to date news, training and events to assist you.

From the evaluations you completed for us, the meeting in June was extremely successful and we are looking forward to seeing you at our next event on the 6th October 2015. It seemed unanimous that you wanted to stay at Center Parcs so we have agreed a partnership with them for another 12 months. We have also secured some wonderful motivation-al and leading speakers for next year along with some great workshop providers and our themes for the conferences have been derived from what you have asked for. You will see the draft agendas later in the Newsletter in more detail. Essentially we will be focusing on some hot topics that you have said you would like us to cover:-

• Procurement and Efficiency• Maximising Your Team’s Potential• Balancing the Books

In addition to this we will also be offering Business Network-ing and Training Events as follows:-

Autumn

• CEFM Updates – 5 November (TBC)• Managing pupils & staff behaviour

Spring

• Audit Preparation/Probity/Regularity

Summer

• CEFM Update• Inspirational Leadership

From your comments on previous events we have the following feedback for you:-

• A show of hands at the last event gave a positive thumbs up to staying at Center Parcs – so we are staying here for the next year.

• You asked for handouts of presentations rather than electronic so we will continue with those for next year.

Welcome to the Autumn Term Newsletter

• Any comments regarding catering are always taken up with Center Parcs direct. There will now be paper cups for drinks and more biscuits provided. Sweeteners will also be available. Any requests for other milk, such as soya, please let us know as this can be provided too. New menus will be available soon and comments you have made will be taken on board.

• Car parking – there are always comments on this – unfortunately it is not something we have control over, but instead of driving around, go straight to Corporate Parking where there is always space and have a leisurely walk to the Venue. Anyone with Blue Badge status, let us know so arrangements can be made. • You like tables for eating lunch, but this is not always pos-sible for every event, so extra “poser” tables will be put in to rest your plates on and menus adapted for more finger food at these events.

• Some of you felt the rooms were cold, heating will be reviewed at each meeting.

We try and accommodate the needs and requests/ comments from as many delegates as possible but with over 150 delegates I am sure you can imagine it is hard do sometimes. But we do try our best for you.

For those members who are new to our organisation, or thinking of joining here are a few of the benefits you will enjoy:-

For just £50 annual membership you will have access to the following benefits:

• Meeting colleagues and sharing experiences on topical issues within Educational Business Management

Schools Advisory Service is delighted to launch our Staff Absence Manage-ment program for schools.

The system, which has been carefully designed in consultation with schools and school leaders, enables managers and staff to save time when logging and managing absences, whilst ensuring accurate records are in place and key trends identified. There are a number of standout benefits, including that the program:

- Allows staff to log their own absences via their schools’ app, which will instantly notify the head teacher via both an email and push notification.

- Gives line managers the ability to contact the absent member of staff via the online system, whilst also maintaining a log of all the communications sent.

- Saves leaders and managers time, including by implementing the Bradford Factor trigger points, automatically identifying sickness patterns, and providing a ‘one stop shop’ for submitting absence claims to Schools Advisory Service.

- Allows line managers to pull off reports, monitor absences and identify trends in absence.

The program is also very easy to use alongside existing systems that schools may have in place. SIMS integration allows you to import your staff details straight from SIMS into the absence management system.

The Absence Management program is available to all SAS client schools and those who purchase the SAS App for their school.

The SBM profession needs a revised reference point that responds to the educational landscape and associated CPD content needs to be relevant and fit for purpose in this new environment.

Schools and academies are expected to identify further efficiencies and paying lip-service to the concept of value for money is not enough. With increased local autonomy schools and academies are expected to review every aspect of their operations and legacy organisational structures.

The Department for Education needs us to provide confidence in a self-improving system that is capable of developing organisational structures that ensure resources and expertise are deployed in the most effective way to ensure optimum learning outcomes for all children.

If we accept that this needs to be achieved within a backdrop of a more challenging fiscal environment and a dilution of local authority support, schools and academies will need to assess their capacity to cope with the new landscape. This will mean; training, recruiting and retaining appropriately experienced and qualified professionals, sharing/combining leadership ca-pacity through collaboration, federations, trusts or mergers, adopting corporate structures sharing/spreading strategic ex-pertise, looking closely at the duplication of effort and expense across schools, embracing technology to improve efficiency and looking beyond education for industry best practice and operational effectiveness.

In response to these new challenges the National Association of School Business Management has developed a national professional standards framework for school business management.

These standards have been developed in conjunction with a range of key stakeholders including, the Department for Education and other government agencies, relevant professional bodies, unions, national associations, universities and practitioners. The responses received to this consultation are over 1,100. The standard draws from a wealth of empirical evidence, international research and industry best practice.

As well as providing the blueprint for effective practice the standards will serve as a tool for recruitment, performance management and career progression. All future school business management related CPD should be underpinned by the standards.

We also hope that schools will choose to use the standards to self-evaluate their own overall operational effectiveness.

The National Association of School Business Management believes that the role deserves professional status. Through the professional standards framework practitioners will be able to apply for formal professional recognition by demonstrating their level of engagement across each section. There will be a formal award for each stage of their professional journey from Affiliate (those aspiring) Member (established practitioners) Fellow (sector leaders). Professional status will require a continued commitment to ongoing CPD, a code of ethics and system leadership.

The new professional standards framework will launch this year at the NASBM national conference on the 18 November 2015. We look forward to sharing this significant launch with those of you that can attend.
