Spiritual Formation News (Emmaus House at 9 Aberdeen Road)

Sister Josephine Daspro, CSJ

At the start of this new year, we once again make resolutions that never seem to pan out. Do you feel guilty or are you challenged to work harder at your spiritual disciplines of keep on trying? Guilt is not necessarily a negative emotion. It can be an emo-tion that challenges us to seek and find a way to do something differently so as not to give guilt any power. If you are curious about what this means, you are invited to Emmaus House starting Monday morning, January 22, at 10:30 am and in the evening at 7:30 pm. All are welcome to join the community that gathers for prayer and sharing. When we keep on trying, HOPE enters the picture. We need to look for the good in life as it is and be grateful for all we have. We need to surround ourselves with hopeful people and to recognize that we are stewards of God's good earth that is always becoming a new creation. Look forward to seeing you.

Rosary Society News PLEASE NOTE TIME CHANGE OF MASS ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH. THE ROSARIANS WILL MEET AT THE 12 P.M. MASS ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH TO BID FAREWELL TO SISTER MARY CHRISTINE. PARISHIONERS ARE IN-VITED AFTER THE 12 P.M. MASS TO MEET IN THE AUDITORUM FOR COFFEE AND CAKE TO THANK AND BID FAREWELL TO SISTER CHRISTINE FOR SERVING NOTRE DAME PARISH FOR 50 YEARS.

From the Desk of Father Slater I would like to bring you up-to-date on Father John Denniston’s condition and the farewell for Sister Christine.

Father Denniston As we announced last week at Mass, Father John Denniston is recovering from surgery and will not be returning to Notre Dame for several months. Fa-ther Denniston had not been feeling well in the pe-riod leading up to Christmas and tests showed that surgery would be necessary. He is doing well but it will take several months of rehab and rest before he is cleared to celebrate Mass or return to teaching. In the meantime, cards and notes to Father Denniston should be sent to the rectory and we will see that they are forwarded to him. When sending cards and well wishes, you might keep in mind that Father Denniston has always had a special devotion to the Infant of Prague, collecting many prints, medals and statues through the years. Please keep him in your prayers. I will keep you updated.

Sister Christine As announced in the bulletin several weeks ago, af-ter almost 50 years of service to our parish, it be-came necessary for Sister Christine to leave Notre Dame and take up residence at the Dominican Motherhouse in Amityville where she will be able to get the care and attention that she needs. It was a difficult decision for Sister Christine to make, but it was the right one. On Sunday, February 4th, we will have the opportu-nity to say thank you to Sister Christine for her ser-vice to the people of our parish. There will be a gathering in the school auditorium immediately fol-lowing the 12PM Mass. All are invited to attend and wish Sister Christine well as she begins a new chapter in her life.

Notre Dame School News

We have been very busy in our Grades 5-6-7 Re-ligion classes so far this winter. Of great importance is the Feast of St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr whose Feast Day is remembered today, January 21. St. Agnes is the Patroness of the Diocese of Rockville Centre Schools. We have been praying for those who need our prayers in Religion class while calling upon the intercession of this special saint whose young life has left such an indelible mark upon our own lives as Catholics. We are learning about the significance of things like St. Agnes Eve, and of the life of Austrian missionary, Father Caspar Rehrl who established a sisterhood of pioneer women un-der the patronage of St. Agnes of Rome. In our Grade 5 classes these days, we’re learning about vessels and vestments used during the celebra-tion of the Holy Eucharist. We are also learning the many ways we can honor Our Lord in the Eucharist, such as praying in silence before the Blessed Sacra-ment. In our Grade 6 classes we have just finished studying the patriarchs in the Book of Genesis. We are beginning the Book of Exodus where we will learn about Moses who was chosen by God to lead his Chosen People, the Israelites out of Egypt. We will also be using our Google Chromebooks to dis-cover some of most sacred and significant places mentioned in the Old Testament. In Grade 7 we are learning about some of the unique traditions throughout the year associated with the Apostles. We are researching these unique traditions as they are celebrated around the world. Next Sunday will be our Catholic Schools’ Week Opening Mass at 9am. We hope you are able to at-tend. We also hope that you will join us during CSW to share in our overall learning experience. Until then, we will keep on praying for your special intentions and for all in our great parish family here at Notre Dame. Many blessings, Ms. Bell & the Religion Students of Grades 5-6-7
