NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS MARCH 27, 2016 From the Pastor An ancient legend tells about a monk who discovered the crown of thorns that had been pressed on Jesus’ head. Covered with blood, it was a horrible sight. The monk took it with care and placed it on the side altar of a church. The people glanced at it, and then turned away. It reminded them of the ugliness and cruelty of sin, their own sins. The crown of thorns remained there until Easter morning when at sunrise, the monk made his way into the church. As he approached the altar, he detected a strange fragrance. The sun was so bright that at first he could not tell what had happened. The sun centered its rays on the sharp thorns. From there emerged roses of rare beauty and a most pleasing fragrance. Isn’t the legend simply beautiful and true? Because it illustrates the power of Christ’s death and Resurrection, which conquered sin and death and replaced it with grace and life; which transformed the cross from an instrument of death and punishment into a source of life and salvation; which brought forth a beautiful rose from an ugly thorn. Indeed the Resurrection packs power the very power of God which can draw out good from evil and write straight with crooked lines. And so each time we love again after having our love rejected, we share in the power of the resurrection. Each time we trust again after having our trust betrayed, we share in the resurrection. Each time we hope again, after our hope has been smashed into pieces, we share in the resurrection. Each time we pick up the pieces again, we share in the power of the resurrection. And so Easter is not just the promise of resurrection after we die, but we can experience it here and now. The tomb which imprisons, which is dark, which is closed in itself, which smells of death simply could not contain Jesus’ body. The empty tomb attests to his rising from the dead. NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS MARCH 27, 2016

From the Pastor An ancient legend tells about a monk who discovered

the crown of thorns that had been pressed on Jesus’

head. Covered with blood, it was a horrible sight. The

monk took it with care and placed it on the side altar of

a church. The people glanced at it, and then turned

away. It reminded them of the ugliness and cruelty of

sin, their own sins. The crown of thorns remained there

until Easter morning when at sunrise, the monk made

his way into the church.

As he approached the altar, he detected a strange

fragrance. The sun was so bright that at first he could

not tell what had happened. The sun centered its rays

on the sharp thorns. From there emerged roses of rare

beauty and a most pleasing fragrance.

Isn’t the legend simply beautiful and true? Because it

illustrates the power of Christ’s death and

Resurrection, which conquered sin and death and

replaced it with grace and life; which transformed the

cross from an instrument of death and punishment into

a source of life and salvation; which brought forth a

beautiful rose from an ugly thorn.

Indeed the Resurrection packs power – the very power

of God which can draw out good from evil and write

straight with crooked lines. And so each time we love

again after having our love rejected, we share in the

power of the resurrection. Each time we trust again

after having our trust betrayed, we share in the

resurrection. Each time we hope again, after our hope

has been smashed into pieces, we share in the

resurrection. Each time we pick up the pieces again, we

share in the power of the resurrection.

And so Easter is not just the promise of resurrection

after we die, but we can experience it here and now. The

tomb which imprisons, which is dark, which is closed in

itself, which smells of death simply could not contain

Jesus’ body. The empty tomb attests to his rising from

the dead.

The invitation for us is to let him empty the tomb that

encloses us in our selfishness and unwillingness to

forgive, the tomb that darkens our relationships, the

tomb that steals and stifles the joy in our homes.

From all of us, the clergy and staff of Notre Dame,

a graced and happy Easter!

Your brother and friend,

Fr. Roland

RESURRECTION OF THE LORD (EASTER SUNDAY) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
