Don’t You Know Me? – Part 2 The exact wording of what the bishops finally produced at the Council of

Chalcedon in 451 regarding the nature of Christ can get cumbersome. They go into great detail about how the two natures aren’t mixed, or about how Jesus isn’t like God, but is God; and about how it’s not that He’s related to God in some special way, but that He is identical to God. They talk about how it’s not the case that one of the natures overpowers the other, and so on. What we can take away from the Council of Chalcedon is that Jesus Christ is both God and Man. Yes, He is God. And yes, He’s a man.

There are a couple of passages in the Gospels where Jesus asks His disciples who people say He is. And then He asks them who they say He is.

For three years Jesus had been preaching about the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven. For three years he’d been teaching people about God the Father, and about how we can do the Father’s will. He had performed miracles: he fed the 5,000, he healed lepers, he raised a little girl from death, he walked on water, and so on.

Undoubtedly, with those kinds of things happening, and with some people being eyewitnesses to them, word would get around. People would talk. Rumors would circulate.

When Jesus was about to go to Jerusalem, He knew He faced certain death. And in a very human way, He wanted to know if all that He has said and done has made an impact. He wants to know if anyone has truly heard him. After all that Jesus had said and done over the last three years of His life, He looks back on it all, and looks at the world around Him and asks, “don’t you know Me?” As a man, Jesus wants to know if all the work He had done was for nothing. Or did at least someone truly come to know Him.

And so He asks his disciples about the rumors. “What are people saying about Me?” He asks. And there’s a variety of opinions. Just like there is today.

Today, many people think they know who Jesus truly is. Some will say that Jesus was a great teacher, but they won’t accept His divinity. Here’s what Jesus taught: He taught that He is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind. He taught that we are all sinners and that we must repent and be forgiven by Him. He taught that everyone is to love God above all else, and that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves. He taught that His Father is the creator of the world, and that the Holy Spirit caused His mother the Blessed Virgin Mary to conceive Him in her womb. He taught that He was crucified, was dead and buried, but that He rose again from the dead on the third day and Ascended into Heaven. I always want to ask those people who say Jesus was a great teacher, if they think He was such a great teacher, then why don’t they believe what He taught? To be continued . . .

No Me Conoces? Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Wednesday 5:00 p.m.—6:00 p.m. Saturday 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church. A Padre Pio Profile by Rev. John A. Schug, OFM, Capuchin, is about a

Capuchin Franciscan priest named Padre Pio of

Pietrelcina, who for fifty years bore the stigmata, the wounds of Jesus, in his hands and feet and side. He was born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, near Naples Italy, in the small town of San Giovanni Rotondo. His life of eighty-one years spanned the “old church” and the “new church” after the second Vatican Council. He died on September 23, 1968. As far back as 1921, Pope Benedict XV called him “truly a man of God.” Pope Pius XII said “we all know that Padre Pio is a saint even before he has died.” The soon to be Pope Pius was told by his advisor that Padre Pio appeared in the Vatican through bilocation (the ability to be in two places at the same time). Pope Paul VI called Padre Pio a “marked representative of the stigmata of our Lord.” Pope John Paul II, visited San Giovanni Rotondo three times: first in 1947 as a student priest in Rome and confessed to Padre Pio, the second was when Padre Pio entrusted to Pope John Paul II (the only pope who was ever told) the most private details of his stigmata, and third to pray at Padre Pio’s tomb. This is a book of interviews collected from a broad range of people who knew him personally: his Capuchin superiors and confreres who lived with him, his personal physician, farmers, shopkeepers, politicians and pilgrims. You will be amazed when you read their stories. Padre Pio’s feast day is September 23 You also might like reading Padre Pio – The Stigmatist by Rev. Charles Mortimer Carty which is also excellent. St. Therese’s feast day is October 1.

Bishop Mike Boulette will preside at the 8:00am Mass with the school children on October 25, 2019. All are invited to come and celebrate with him.
