Epiphany 2018

Christians celebrate the Epiphany traditionally on or near January 6 each year. The word Epiphany means various but similar things: it can be taken to mean a revelation, an unveiling, or a realization. A very similar word is theophany, which means an appearance of God, usually to a particular individual. God appearing to Moses in the burning bush was a theophany.

As we Catholics use the term Epiphany, we generally mean that the revealing or unveiling of God Incarnate in Jesus Christ is meant for all the world, Jew and Gentile alike. This is what the visit of the Magi represents.

We never would have found God by looking. We never would have found God by reasoning alone, or by speculation. We may have surmised that a great power was behind what we observe in nature, but we would not have known it was God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Christian Faith is a revealed faith. The Catholic Church teaches that God has revealed Himself -- not a philosophy, not a code of ethics, not secret knowledge. God has revealed Himself as our Father; He has revealed Himself freely out of love; He has revealed Himself in friendship with us, not as our enemy; He has revealed Himself for the purpose of our redemption; He has revealed Himself gradually; His self-revelation is meant for all people at all times, to be handed on from one generation to the next. God has revealed Himself fully in Jesus Christ.

As John wrote, the light that enlightens everyone has come into the world. This Epiphany, and for all of the New Year, let’s all live the reality of the Light of Jesus Christ come into the world. Let’s turn from all darkness and despair, and look to our Savior Jesus Christ, the Way , the Truth and the Life, to lead us home. Amen.

Jesse was David’s father, not Saul. David may be said to be the “son” of Saul in the sense that he is the successor to the kingship first held by Saul, and then by David. So the sentence ought to have read:

La Epifanía del Señor 2018 Los Cristianos celebran la Epifanía tradicionalmente en o cerca del 6 de enero de cada año. La palabra Epifanía significa manifestación: puede entenderse como una revelación, o una realización. Una palabra muy similar es teofanía, que significa una aparición de Dios, por lo general a un individuo en particular. Dios apareciéndose a Moisés en la zarza ardiente fue una teofanía.

Como nosotros, los Católicos, usamos el término Epifanía, generalmente queremos decir revelación de Dios encarnado en Jesucristo es para todo el mundo, tanto Judíos como Gentiles. Esto es lo que representa la visita de los Reyes Magos. Nunca hubiéramos encontrado a Dios mirando. Nunca hubiésemos encontrado a Dios solamente por el razonamiento o por especulación. Podemos haber supuesto que un gran poder estaba detrás de lo que observamos en la naturaleza, pero no hubiéramos sabido que era Dios: Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo.

La Fe Cristiana es una fe revelada. La Iglesia Católica enseña que Dios se ha revelado a Sí mismo, no una filosofía, ni un código de ética, ni un conocimiento secreto. Dios se reveló a Sí mismo como nuestro Padre; Él se ha revelado libremente por amor; Él se reveló a Sí mismo en amistad con nosotros, no como nuestro enemigo; Él se reveló a Sí mismo con el propósito de nuestra redención; Él se ha revelado a sí mismo gradualmente; Su auto-revelación está destinada a todas las personas en todo momento, para pasar de una generación a otra. Dios se ha revelado plenamente en Jesucristo.

Como escribió San Juan, la luz que ilumina a todos ha venido al mundo. Esta Epifanía, y durante todo el Año Nuevo, vivamos la realidad de la Luz de Jesucristo que viene al mundo. Loving God,

As missionary disciples, we are sent to bring the Good News of Jesus to everyone in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

EPIPHANY BLESSING OF THE HOME /CHALKING OF THE DOOR

The family gathers to ask God’s blessing on their home and on those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home’s entrance, 20 + C + M + B + 18. The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross and 2018 is the year. Blessing the Chalk V. Our help is the name of the Lord: R. The maker of heaven and earth. V. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in: R. From this time forth for evermore. Let us pray. BENDICIÓN DE LAS CASAS EN LA FESTIVIDAD DE LA EPIFANÍA /ESCRIBIR CON TIZA EN LA PUERTA La familia se reúne para pedir a Dios la bendición de su hogar y la de aquellos que lo habitan o lo visiten. Es una invitación a que Jesús sea un invitado diario en nuestro hogar, en nuestros quehaceres, ires y venires, nuestras conversaciones, nuestros trabajos y juegos, nuestras penas y alegrías. Una forma tradicional de hacerlo es usar una tiza para escribir sobre la entrada del hogar 20 + C + M + B + 16. Las letras C, M, B tienen dos significados. Son las iniciales de los nombres tradicionales de los tres reyes magos: Gaspar (Caspar en latín), Melchor y Baltasar. También son la abreviatura de las palabras en latín Christus mansionem benedicat, es decir, “Que Cristo bendiga esta casa.” El símbolo “+” representa la cruz y 2018 es el año.

Para bendecir la tiza: V. Nuestro Auxilio es el Nombre del Señor. R. Que hizo el cielo y la tierra. V. El Señor esté con vosotros. R. Y con tu espíritu.

Oremos. Que el amor de Dios bendiga esta tiza que ha creado, que sea de ayuda a nuestra gente; y que por su Santo Nombre, por los santos nombres Gaspar, Melchor y Baltasar que escribiremos sobre la puerta de nuestro hogar, que el Señor interceda para que esta casa reciba la salud del cuerpo y la protección del alma de aquellos que la habitan y aquellos que la visiten; por Jesucristo nuestro Señor. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.

The Knights of Columbus, is to Sponsor Youth Free Throw Championship. All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2018 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held January 20, 2018, at 9:00 am at the Notre Dame School Gym. The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent.
