NEW PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

As part of our continued commitment to giving our children the very best school ex-

periences, we have been working with children to improve play opportunities. We

are therefore delighted to be able to announce that our new playground structure is

now complete, ready to use, and is being enjoyed by all of the children at Marlbor-

ough Primary School- including the Year 6 pupils! The new unit promotes independent

play, adventure and fundamental skill development. It features a majestic leaf col-

oured hut, as well as a tall rocket shaped tower perched high above the ground. The

playground design is inspired by nature, with features such as the beautiful timber

effect panels and structures. The new playground equipment has been designed to

simulate an adventure trail, with two access points including wide offset steps and a

ramp.

Here is what some of the pupils at Marlborough have been saying about their new playground feature:

It’s great fun creating lovely

sounds. This is the best play

equipment ever!

Health & Safety During school hours, children are supervised by members of staff when using the new adventure playground. For health and safety purposes, when dropping off

and/or collecting your child(ren) (before and after school) please do not allow them to play on the new play ground equipment, as the school cannot be held responsible for any injuries that occur.

YEAR 2 GERMS

Year 2 are learning about being healthy this term in

Science. They have learnt about how germs spread

and what to do to prevent the spread of these germs. We used a spray bottle filled

with water and glitter to represent the germs and we sprayed it to see how far a

sneeze can travel. We were shocked to find that it could travel up to 10 metres!!

The children made posters to show how we can prevent the spread of germs by cov-

ering your mouth when you sneeze and cough and to make sure you wash your

hands thoroughly after going to the toilet. This is very important, especially coming

into the winter season!

ENGLISH CURRICULUM

This year, we have some very exciting developments in the English curriculum! As usual, we will have the Autumn term Book Fair which will begin on Monday 2nd December until Friday 6th December after school in the Music room. There will be another Book Fair in the summer term. Please do come along to purchase some books for your children – there are always some amazing deals and for every book you buy, the school will receive a free book which will be added to our school library. As a school, our aim is to promote the love of reading so we will be continuing with our Peer Reading Programme. This involves each class being buddied up with another class and spend time together in the library to read with each other. We are excited to announce that classes in EYFS and KS1 will now be joining KS2 in this programme. These sessions provide children with fantastic opportunities to read with different children as well as read a range of different books. Reading out loud to someone is an extremely effective way of learning how to read and will also support children in their writing.

To further support children in their development of reading, we will continue to teach comprehension through VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising/Sequencing). These are all important skills that children will need to learn and develop so that they can fully understand what they are reading. To support this at home, we encourage children to read for at least 10-20 minutes every day and record what they have read in their Reading Records. It would be useful for you to check these records so that you can monitor how much they are reading at home.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

As always, we are excited to delve deeper into our Religious Education at Marlbor-

ough during the new academic year. Our aim is to create awareness, tolerance and

respect amongst children in order to create a peaceful society. Many religious

celebrations fall within the upcoming academic year – therefore we will be holding

our first whole school celebration day on Friday 18th October to celebrate Diwali

Day! Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for further information about the various

activities children will be taking part in, including applying Henna, creating

eye-catching Diva lamps and even indulging in some Indian Cooking. Further

information will follow to inform you on our whole school showcase at the end of

the day where you can watch the talented performances of our Year 6 children.

At Marlborough, we realise how privileged

we are to experience the magnitude of di-

verse cultures and religions that fill this ar-

ea and we are proud to have formed strong

links within the religious community in Har-

row. In order to enrich their learning, chil-

dren in all year groups will be going on

many trips to local places of worship. In

addition to this, we have planned several

workshops led by local religious leaders for

children to attend in school. We understand

that the families of Marlborough have a

wealth of religious and cultural diversity

and if you are interested in talking to your

child’s class about the religions that they

are learning about this term, please do let

the class teacher know.

PE NEWS

This year, we have some exciting events happening in the PE curriculum! We once again will be developing our football team and competing to win the Barnet FC cup.

Also, we have now entered the school into a Dodgeball competition! We will establish a brand new team of warriors to eliminate all competition and prove that Marlborough Primary School is the tough-est school in Harrow!

Our Year 4 children will be splashing in the swimming pools at Harrow Leisure Centre as part of their curric-ulum, and we plan to hold sporting parent-engaged events so the adults can show the children what it means to be a true competitor.

Stay tuned for more events taking place throughout the year!

MUSIC NEWS

This year we have more changes happening in the music curriculum. Con-tinuing on from last year, we will have our termly ‘Music Showcase’, cele-brating the hard work of our musically inclined students as they practice what they have learnt in their lessons through the term; our first event being in mid-December. We look forward to seeing you there witnessing the brilliance of all the students!

This year, the school is continuing to prioritise developing relations with the parents and carers of our children. As such, there will be planned op-portunities for parents to join their children in their music lessons to witness what they learn (and hopefully take part too!) Alongside this, there will be other various planned events to showcase the musicality of the school in collaboration with the other subjects across the curriculum. Make sure to stay tuned for more information and dates for shows!

Mathematics @Marlborough Primary School

Welcome back! I hope that you had an enjoyable sum-

mer

holiday.

Raising attainment and supporting chil-

dren to develop their maths skills contin-

ues to be an important focus for us at

Marlborough Primary School. We would

not be able to do this without your sup-

port.

We have been working really

hard across the school to improve

our number sense and fluency.

We aim that children have a real-

ly good understanding of how

numbers work and can also recall

number facts and times tables. At

Marlborough, we seek to ensure

that all children leave with the

fundamental skills they need to

ensure they are successful in later

life. We follow a system of teach-

ing mastery in maths. This means

that all children develop a deep

and secure understanding of all

We use a range of games and websites to

help the children become fluent in their

knowledge, and to support their learning.

These sites can make a huge difference to the

children’s confidence.

This year we will continue to use the fantastic

Times Tables Rockstars to develop knowledge

of times tables and division facts for all pupils

from Y1-Y6. Times tables are recognised as

essential to access many mathematical con-

cepts and knowledge will be assessed at the

end of Y4, from September 2019, by a Nation-

al test.

If you have not yet received your login

details, please speak to your child’s class

teacher.

Welcome back! I hope that you had an enjoyable

summer holiday.

Raising attainment and supporting children to develop their maths

School. We would not be able to do this without your support.

At Marlborough, we seek to ensure that all children leave with the fun-

damental skills they need to ensure they are successful in later life. We

follow a system of teaching mastery in maths. This means that all chil-

dren develop a deep and secure understanding of all mathematical

skills relative to their age and year group. Children are further

stretched from this into activities that deepen their learning and under-

standing encouraging them to justify and explain.

In Reception and KS1,

we unpick counting, which is much trickier than first appears. We learn

how numbers are made of other numbers and compare them. We also

do lots of subitising, which is all about identifying how many there are

in small groups of objects without counting them.

Research has shown that this is a key indicator of future mathematical

success. We often use ten frames and play lots of games to help embed

our knowledge and skills. Children learn facts such as the pairs of num-

bers that make 10 and that 7 is made of 5 and 2 more.

In KS2, we build on the children's knowledge and understanding of

early number. We follow the White Rose Maths Hub’s detailed

schemes of

learning which supports a mastery approach to teaching and learning

and have been designed to support the aims and

objectives of the National Curriculum. In

addition to knowing and applying basic

number skills, pupils are also required to

reason mathematically, solve problems

using different strategies and communi-

cate their understanding effectively.
