International Robocup 2019

On the last day of Term 2, a small group of Year 6 robotics students got the opportunity to attend the International Robocup 2019 at Darling Harbour. The highlight of the day was getting to watch a ‘super team’ of ex Hamilton South Robotics students representing Australia in the ‘On Stage’ discipline. It was an incredible experience for these students as they got to see just how far robotics could take them. The students got the chance to meet with high school students from all over the world. We even got the chance to watch the Australian (Newcastle University) Soccer Team defeat Brazil!!! Something we would love to see our Australian men's team do! A huge thanks must go to the Hunter Robocup committee, especially Aaron Wong, who organised the bus. It was part of the Hunter committee’s strategic plan to increase interest in robotics in schools. Primary Ethics Teaching

Primary Ethics teacher workshop scheduled for August 10th &11th. Please register now if you are interested. Could you be an ethics teacher at Hamilton South Public School? Ethics at Hamilton South Public School has seen an increase in demand, and unfortunately there is currently a wait-list to enrol - particularly for Kindergarten. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. We are looking for additional Ethics Teachers NOW to be able to continue providing Primary Ethics classes to meet the demand. If you are interested in finding our more information on becoming an Ethics Teacher, or about the Ethics at the school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au, or contact Grant Donnelly, on 0437697802 or at [email protected]

Athletics Carnival The Hamilton South PS Athletics Carnival will be held this Thursday, 25 July at the Newcastle Athletics Track. Beautiful weather has been forecast for this day. Please make sure your child has a hat packed and plenty of water to drink. Two athletics carnival formats will be run on the day to cater for all attending. Infants’ students (K-2) will take part in a fun novelty events style carnival while Primary students (8-13yrs) will complete PSSA athletics events. All Year 2 students who are 8 years old or turning 8 this year who wish to participate in the Primary carnival format should have returned the note which was sent home last term. If this note has not been returned, these Year 2 students will compete in the Infants novelty event format carnival. Students who have ordered their lunch for the day, through the canteen, will be given a coloured wristband to wear on the day prior to leaving. This will allow them to go and get their lunch from a specified place on the day whenever they please. All students are required to come to school as per normal on the day wearing their full sports uniform. Once again, please make sure each student attending has a hat, water and lunch packed for the day. Sunscreen will be provided at the carnival by the school. A sign off register table will be set up at the carnival for those parents/caregivers who wish to leave the carnival early. All students who have not been signed out will return to school with a supervising teaching for normal home time procedures. Students competing in some events (field events), may only get two opportunities to jump/throw as we are so pushed for time. Group sizes also affect event completion. The final eight or so students in each field event will be given a 3rd and final attempt. Ribbons/awards will be given out at a later date. A coffee cart has been booked for those parents attending which I’m sure they’ll appreciate. I’m definitively looking forward to the day as I’m sure each student of our great school is too!

Mr. True (Sports Coordinator)

Girls Touch Football News Late last term the HSPS Girls Touch Football Team played their first round match of the 2019 Knockout Competition against Merewether Heights PS. They had a spectacular start to the competition with a 10-1 win. The girls played exceptionally well as a team considering it was their first game together. We all look forward to watching the girls play round two of the competition against Carrington Public School in the near future.

How to Report Cyberbullying

In 2018, the Education Ministers agreed on the following definition:

‘Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.’

Serious cyberbullying can be reported to the eSafety Commissioner.
