Headmasters Reflections:

Recent feedback from Dover Sherborn graduates (Class of 2015 and 2016) indicate that the high

school curriculum as well as other school related activities, have prepared them well for

undergraduate study. Averages of 68% of graduates who took the survey are attending their first

choice college with over 70% obtaining a grade point average between 3.45 and 4.0. We will

continue to survey students in future graduating classes to ensure we are preparing students for a

challenging post secondary educational experience.

DSHS ALUMNI SURVEY RESULTS

Ellen Chagnon and I have analyzed the recent alumni surveys from the class of 2015 and 2016.

School Committee Update – Athletics (2/2/18)

We have lots of big events coming up for our student-athletes, beginning with the first portion of

the TVL Swim and Dive Championship. This afternoon at Westwood HS, we will have some of

our student-athletes competing in the 500 and the Dive Championship. The rest of the events

will take place on Sunday morning at the Keefe Tech Pool.

Tomorrow is the TVL Indoor Track Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury. The

meet starts at 5pm and will feature many of our boys and girls track team members. We are

hoping for a great day that will feature some more of our school records being broken!

Saturday is also the Boys Hockey Team’s Senior Day. The game versus Bellingham begins at

Chase Arena at 4pm with the Senior Ceremony taking place prior to the puck drop. Best of luck

to all of our seniors in their big game on Saturday.

The Girls Hockey Team is on a two-game win streak! They have been playing some great

hockey as of late and look to continue this fine play as the season concludes over the next few

weeks.

Curriculum & Learning

English:

Sixth grade students are working in literature circles to talk about various texts. In addition to learning

important skills necessary for working with others, they are investigating how authors use the hero's journey

in a variety of genres. Students will also be writing an assortment of expository and argumentative pieces in

preparation for the upcoming ELA MCAS.

Seventh grade students have finished their research projects and will be sharing them with their classmates.

They have also completed book talks to share their enthusiasm for novels that they have enjoyed reading.

Next up: students will be reading Paul Fleischman's Seedfolks and will be exploring three essential questions:

How does setting shape characters' experiences and behavior? How does reading literature from different

points of view help us better understand characters? And how can we apply lessons we learn in literature to

our own lives?

Eighth grade students have started the interdisciplinary writing project with social studies. This week the

focus in English is thesis statements.

We are about to begin a literature circle project. The books all focus on the idea of identity and citizenship and

will serve as a springboard for our reading of To Kill A Mockingbird.

We've just wrapped up book talks for independent reading selections.

In grammar, we continue learning about simple, compound and complex sentences.

Science:

The sixth grade has completed their space science unit culminating with the super, blue moon, lunar eclipse

trifecta! Students were introduced to the scientific method, length, mass and volume through a measurement

and toothpaste lab. Upon completion of the toothpaste lab, letters are written to the manufactured brands to let

them know how their products fared in a "head to head" comparison. The next few months will be spent

exploring earth science. beginning with the layers of the earth.

Our life science students have been doodling on our science lab tables; yes, you read that correctly! Our

students have been studying cell division and the cell cycle and one of our hands-on activities included

students drawing on our lab tables with liquid chalk! Students and teachers alike loved the art-infused science

lesson. As we take a deeper dive into the field of genetics, students will learn about traits, genes, probability

and cool advances in the field of genetics such as gene therapy, cloning, and biotechnology.

Eighth grade is bridging the topics of matter and energy with our study of heat. A lab favorite is the "can

crusher" experiment where students use a sudden state change to change the pressure inside an aluminum can

and cause an "implosion." Thanks to all the families who provided empty cans from their recycling over the

past week.

Social Studies:

During the month of January, students in 6th

grade social studies completed a unit on ancient Egypt. The unit

concluded with a project where students were allowed to select a topic related to ancient Egypt that they were

interested in learning more about. Students then conducted research and wrote a paper that they were able to

share with their classmates. They also created a visual related to their topic that was put on display during

class. As we finish the month and head into February, we have begun a unit on ancient Israel. In this unit,

students will learn about the history of the ancient Israelites and the origins of Judaism. We will also learn

about Jewish holidays and make an effort to compare and contrast the three major monotheistic religions in

the world today: Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

Seventh grade students are exploring the different regions of Africa and learning about the people who live

there. Topics we are discussing include life in Saharan Africa, European colonialism and the many ways it

has shaped African countries today, the system of apartheid in South Africa, and the Maasai culture of Kenya

and Tanzania. One of the highlights of this unit is a visit from a real Maasai warrior from Tanzania! Thank

you to DSEF for generously funding this performance for the 7th grade.

To finalize our Constitution and Bill of Rights units, 8th grade students have chosen a topic to research and

then they are writing to an elected official urging some type of action. Students are working on this as an

interdisciplinary English and Social Studies project. Students are just starting the drafting portions of their

letters after doing a number of templates to help them choose who to write to and how to outline their letters.

This year, students will be revising their letters after getting teacher feedback before mailing them from class.

We hope to match past year's 75% and higher response rates!

Music:

On Sunday, January 28, many DSMS students performed in the annual Chocolate Cafe in Lindquist

Commons. The event was a great success with strong performances from Jazz Eclipse, Sharp9 Big Band, 7th

& 8th Grade Chorus, String Ensemble and other HS ensembles. Many thanks to the DS Friends of the

Performing Arts for organizing the event which included lots of delicious chocolate treats and incredible raffle

items to benefit our music programs at DS.

Wellness:

Physical Education: Students have been mastering dance routines in the gym this month. Be on the lookout

for the champion square dancers and line dancers to be posted on the school website very soon. Sixth grade

classes have completed the following line dances: Electric Slide, Cotton Eyed Joe, Macarena, Cha Cha Slide

and Cupid Shuffle.

Seventh grade students have learned two 3 minute square dancing routines. Eighth grade students are now

compiling their version of a line dance.

Health Education: Semester 1 ends today. Students in grades 7 and 8 will switch to their semester 2 classes.

On Monday, 1/29, Grade 7 students starting Health class will begin learning about physical, emotional, and

social health. Grade 8 students starting Health class will get an overview of the course and will practice

foundation skills for participating in a class discussion.

Technology & Engineering:

Grade 6 Quarter 2 students wrapped up the month of January and quarter 2 with data collection using

spreadsheets, formulas and charts to analyze their individual research. They also coded and shared apps with

each other from the computer to mobile devices. Programming robotic devices with code kept students

engaged weekly, as they practiced coding with a buddy from a mobile device. Students also enjoyed learning

more about algorithms with Rubik's cubes in Ms. Sammarco's classroom, sharing and problem-solving hands-

on.

Grade 7 quarter 2 students closed out the month of January and quarter 2 with their Shark Tank pitches and

STEAM projects. Winners of this quarter's Shark Tank projects are SolWarm blanket/jacket by Vivian J. and

Sabrina F. along with AA's StyLapz pen/pencil by Ava R. and August S. Students also worked with

Northeastern University’s Computer Engineering students collaborating on May's Journey, a game coded by

Northeastern University student to teach DSMS students how to code. There was great feedback and

collaboration transpiring throughout this year.

Grade 8 Q2 Engineering students wrapped up this quarter with engineering a more efficient tabletop

trebuchet with a 3D printed sling designed in Tinkercad. Also, students completed and tested their working

telegraphs incorporating electricity, magnetism and knowledge of waves and communication using morse

code.

Sixth Grade:

Students enjoyed a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Activity Day on Friday, 1/12. An all school morning assembly

kicked off this fun event! Throughout the day, children attended three different workshops with other sixth

graders, seventh graders, and eighth graders, lead by teachers and administrators, around the theme of

“Synergy.”

All sixth grade students will be introduced to their second to last monthly theme, “Use of Feedback,”

connected to the topic of Effective Effort. Sixth grade teachers have been incorporating the effectiveness of

all monthly themes, in each of their classes, to assist students with schoolwork, along with activities outside of

school.

Eighth Grade:

Students participated in a pizza fundraiser to earn money for their spring trips to Washington DC or Boston.

Students, teachers and parents assembled the pizza on Friday 2/2 to deliver to customers.

Professional Development/Professional Growth & Evaluation System Update:

The middle school continues to work with Ann Larson from the Landmark School. Ann will be working with

our entire staff but will spend additional time with Amanda Rogers and the teams that are instructing students

in our Language Based Program. In addition, Jill Arkin and Amanda Rogers visited Friends Academy to

observe and learn about their language-based program (Sally Borden Program). Also, Christine Smith has

organized three "choirs" that our department is participating in for professional development. They are

around service delivery, eligibility and continuum of services between the different schools.

Our ELA department, under the guidance of Beth McCoy, continues their work with their district colleagues

as they review the ELA Curriculum for grades K-12. The rest of our staff is finishing up the TEC Online

course: Connecting Behavioral Health & Social Emotional Learning to Success in School.

CLASSROOM VISITS WITH LANDMARK CONSULTANT

On Tuesday, January 23, Christine Smith and I visited middle and high school classrooms with

Ann Larson, our language-based disability consultant from the Landmark School. The objective

of the day was to determine to what extent best practices for language-based teaching were being

utilized in language designated classrooms and others. Many of the strategies, including writing

templates and graphic organizers, clear expectations and pacing cues, binder organizers and

study guides were evident. Moving forward, Christine and I are eager to converse with both

regular and special educators around universally designed practices that benefit all students and

how to integrate such strategies across all classrooms.

CURRICULUM REVIEW

Work within the English Department continues at each level as elementary curricular leaders

revise unit maps to reflect the new state standards, and middle and high school educators update

their plans to ensure consistency of a rigorous experience for all students. Knowing that the

objective of this work is not only to update curricular plans but to engage in collegial

conversation around best practices and areas for improvement, many rich discussions have

ensued around grammar, vocabulary, and non-fiction texts. As the mapping and outlining

process begins to wind down, next steps for the department have and will continue to be

identified, including the the need for comparing writing samples between grade levels and

establishing anchor texts. These next steps will ultimately populate the action plan that will drive

the department’s work over the next several years.

GUIDELINES FOR THE SAFE USE OF TECHNOLOGY

In response to parent and community concerns around the alleged biological effects of wifi

technology and electromagnetic field radiation, I have contacted Mr. Kenneth Klau from the

Office of Digital Learning at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary

Education (DESE) and Dr. Robert Knorr, Director of the Environmental Epidemiology Program

Page 16: NOTICE - Dover-Sherborn Regional High School...graduation? Eng - 76% Math - 69% Sci - 47% SS - 59% Lang - 35% Eng - 76% Math - 57% Sci - 43% SS - 31% Lang - 43% How mid-years and finals

for the Bureau of Environmental Health at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health

(DPH) for guidance. Dr. Knorr indicated that fact sheets regarding the safe use of wifi

technology are under final review, and once ready will be disseminated to the public. The DPH

has agreed to offer listening sessions upon release, and DESE intends to utilize the fact sheets to

develop guidelines for the safe use of devices in schools and classrooms. We will follow the

progress of both the fact sheets and educational guidelines, and are prepared as a district to

implement suggested practices and recommendations.

NUTRITIONIST

Janelle Madden and I are in the final stages of hiring a part-time nutritionist for the middle and

high schools. With the support of the Regional School Committee, we have been provided

funding for someone to work alongside Janelle and her team, finding ways to advertise and

promote the healthy food options available to students as well as gain feedback and further

innovate the menu. We are eager to bring our candidate on board and will keep you and the

committee apprised of her work.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

The Professional Development Committee met on Thursday, January 25 to updates plans for

professional development offerings this spring, share school-based structures that allow for

collaboration and learning during and after the school day, identify possible partners and

agencies to facilitate workshops and courses, and determine how best to publicize the many

professional development opportunities available to faculty. The committee will meet again on

March 22 to discuss reviving the Dover Sherborn Institute - professional development offered to

DS educators by DS educators, and begin laying out the professional development plan and

calendar for the 2018-2019 school year.

SEAL OF BILITERACY

A small group of educators representative of building leaders, and English Language Learning

and foreign language teachers met on Thursday, February 1 to explore the Seal of Biliteracy and

its possible implementation in Dover Sherborn. The Seal of Biliteracy is a national initiative

adopted by the State of Massachusetts that allows schools and districts to recognize students who

have studied and obtained proficiency in two or more languages by graduation. Members of the

committee have identified next steps in the process, including a full presentation for the Regional

School Committee and request for approval. I will collaborate with you and the Chair of the

Committee to determine when best to present this idea for consideration.

TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE

The district-based Technology Committee met on Thursday, January 18 to review progress made

on the action plan set forth by the 2016-2021 Educational Technology Plan. The team agreed

that the following items have been completed:

Page 17: NOTICE - Dover-Sherborn Regional High School...graduation? Eng - 76% Math - 69% Sci - 47% SS - 59% Lang - 35% Eng - 76% Math - 57% Sci - 43% SS - 31% Lang - 43% How mid-years and finals

national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or homelessness.

● Leadership, Outcome 1a: Update and publish the District Technology Plan and

Supplements

● Leadership, Outcome 1b: Create a funding model to include action steps, funding

sources for sustainable hardware, software and infrastructure that is identified in the

Tech Plan Supplements

● Assessment, Outcome 1b: Create a process for teachers to request or suggest new

apps or online tools to be added to the approved list

● Assessment, Outcome 2a: Revisit and revise, as needed, Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

to include a district policy statement on student privacy

● Assessment, Outcome 2c: Clear statement of district policy on student privacy in each

individual school's handbook

Moving forward, the Committee has prioritized, “Create and implement student-centered

learning environments that foster critical thinking, complex problem solving, collaboration, and

multimedia communication” and related items, all in line with the initial report and the

forthcoming Strategic Plan. The Technology Committee will now consult with the Professional

Development Committee and building leaders to begin work in this area.

WELLNESS COMMITTEE

The Wellness Committee met for its second annual meeting on Wednesday, January 31. Having

discussed areas of interest at our November meeting, the group divided into five subgroups to

begin work on the following goals:

● Health Curriculum - support our educators in delivering a current and effective

curriculum

● Movement & Mindfulness - identify creative ways to add movement and mindfulness to

the day

● Nutrition 2.0 - support our nutritionist in meeting the goals outlined in the Edvocate

Report

● Technology Safety - identify best practices and recommend guidelines for the safe

integration of technology

● Wellness in DS - identify ways to share and celebrate our district initiatives

All four goals align with the district’s Wellness Plan as well as the Strategic Plan. Each subgroup

will continue work on its goal between now and our April 25 meeting.

Security

We have entered into agreement with Synergy Solutions, the security firm that will conduct a safety audit of

all four of the schools within the district. The Dover, Sherborn, and Dover-Sherborn Regional schools will be

billed separately. The audit will be conducted this spring and safety training and upgrading of emergency

protocols will take place during the 2017-18 school year.

Professional Development

On Friday February 9, 2018, I will be joined by Assistant Superintendent Beth McCoy at a Regional Legislative

Breakfast, sponsored by TEC and Superintendent Robert Tremblay of the Framingham Public Schools. The

roundtable discussion will allow for an opportunity for school leaders to hear from local legislators on current

issues under consideration at the state level and for legislators to hear from educators about the struggles

school leaders are facing at the local level. We are looking forward to this opportunity for sharing and

connecting with fellow educational and state leaders.

Next week I will travel to the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Conference, in

Nashville, Tennessee. The conference, built around the theme of Educating in the Digital Age, will provide

me with opportunities to learn more about cutting edge practices in education both on the national and

global level. Particular topics of interest to me include: Educational Leadership SIMS, STEAM and Invention

Based Learning, and Defining Profiles of a Graduate. I am looking forward to this learning experience and to

sharing what I learn with other leaders in the district.

Summer Retreat Date Set

We will once again be holding a two day retreat for the Leadership Team this year. The retreat will be held

on July 10th and 11th at the Boston College Connor Retreat Center in Dover. This is an excellent opportunity

for the leaders of the district to come together to process the successes and challenges of the past year,

strengthen our skills professionally, and complete goal work for the district.

Quarterly Visits and Administrator Evaluation

I continue to hold quarterly visits with each of the principals, wherein together we visit classrooms and return

to a quiet space to discuss strengths and weaknesses of the lessons observed. The purpose of this exercise is

to ensure consistency amongst administrators in our language and understanding of that which constitutes

quality instruction. These meetings also provide us with opportunities to process current issues and real time

challenges collaboratively. In addition, I am continuing to write observation reports of the administrators as

we work toward developing complete, data based formative and summative evaluation reports. As a

reminder, principals in Massachusetts, like superintendents have clear state standards by which they are

evaluated. You can review those here.

School Visits/Attendance at School Events
