BYK TechnologiesDecorative Coatings
Architectural CoatingsArchitectural coatings range from interior wall paints to external coatings for facades, as well as decorative coatings for wood and metal, for example, with/on window frames, doors, fences, and road marking paints grids. BYK offers special additives according to the regulatory requirements for aqueous as well as for solvent-borne systems. In these applications different binders are used, such as acrylates, styrene-acrylates, alkyds, TPA, and PU.
Flooring CoatingsOnce reserved for warehouses, production sites, shopping centers and hospitals, the use of liquid polymer coatings is gaining popularity in many commercial spaces. Increasing in parallel is regulatory oversight. For this reason, the growth of water-based and solvent-free systems is even more important. BYK additives for floor coatings simplify system handling and make it possible to obtain more reproducible results.
ACS20188
Construction ChemicalsBYK offers environmentally friendly solutions for
construction applications. The innovative product portfolio contains different types of performance
additives, particularly for cement-based applications such as dry mix mortars, concrete
formulations and admixtures. Our rheology modifiers improve application and workability properties while our defoamers enhance de-aeration and prevent foam formation. The range of wetting & dispersing and surface additives finally provide pigment stabilization and levelling properties.
ACS2018 9

Paints in Marine & Protective Coatings are applied at high film thickness to provide enhanced durability and
resistance to aggressive environments to protect metal and concrete substrates. Whether it be the
primer, mid-coat, or top coat, BYK offers a wide range of additives to assist formulators in
developing high performance protective and marine coatings systems.
ACS2018 11
Special Coatings
Can CoatingsHigh surface smoothness, very good scratch and abrasion resistance, absence of bubbles, good substrate adhesion and very good leveling are decisive characteristics for can coatings. BYK offers food contact-approved additives which can be used in solvent-based, aqueous and radiation-cured can coating systems.
Coil CoatingsThe high line speeds of industrial band coating operations and the subsequent extreme deformation of the coated sheets demand coatings with very good color stability. They must also be free of foam, provide excellent leveling, adhere well and have surface characteristics such as smoothness, scratch and abrasion resistance, and also enhanced ease of cleaning. With BYK additives, these properties can be achieved in all coil coating application areas.

Industrial CoatingsIndustrial coatings are used over plastic, metal, and
mineral substrates. Often the coated objects are industrial mass products. The application areas
are manifold and so are the required additives. BYK additives provide solutions for pigment
stabilization, defoaming, improved surface properties and rheology control in aqueous,
solvent-borne and solvent-free formulations.
Powder CoatingsPowder coatings are one of the most environmentally friendly coating systems as they contain no harmful VOCs and are 100 % solid. BYK offers a wide range of additives for powder coatings that improve leveling, prevent craters and enhance degassing and pigment wetting. A special range of additives is
used to improve processing conditions while others provide structured or textured
surfaces. BYK also provides additives for clear powder coatings as well as UV powders.

DISPERBYK-2080 DISPERBYK-2081
Wetting and Dispersing Additives for Aqueous Systems without Negative Impact on Water Sensitivity, Stain and Corrosion Resistance
Benefits
• DISPERBYK-2080 and DISPERBYK-2081 preserve the
Water resistance Corrosion resistance Stain resistance Early water resistance
of aqueous systems
• Show positive effects on Gloss retention Improved adhesion
• Good wetting and dispersing properties with excellent viscosity reduction for TiO2, inorganic, partly organic and anticorrosive pigments as well as fillers
ACS201814 ADDITIVES
To overcome the difference in surface tension between pigments and water, dispersing additives for water-borne systems need a certain hydrophilicity which can be achieved through ionic or hydrophilic structures. As these components remain in the cured coating, they bear the risk of increasing the coating´s hydrophilicity negatively influencing characteristics such as water, stain, and corrosion resistance.
The water and corrosion resistance is of special importance to anticorrosive primers and DTM (direct to metal) coatings whereas wood coatings need excellent water and stain resistance. These systems are mainly pigmented with titanium dioxides and other inorganic pigments, fillers and anticorrosive pigments.
DISPERBYK-2080 and DISPERBYK-2081 are new tailor-made wetting and dispersing additives based on novel chemical structures, which combine good viscosity reduction and deflocculation of inorganic pigments with the least negative influence on water, stain, and corrosion resistance as possible.

DISPERBYK-2023Solvent-borne Wetting and Dispersing Additive for Liquid Printing Inks based on TPU, TPA, NC and Vinyl Copolymers
Modern solvent-borne printing inks are becoming increasingly polar. That is why it is particularly challenging to find suitable, compatible dispersing additives for NC-based printing inks. At the same time, PU and vinyl systems result in increased polarity as well as a faster printing process. The quicker processing speeds therefore require faster-drying printing inks. This can be achieved by using a solvent that evaporates more quickly, or by applying less printing ink. However, if less printing ink is applied, then higher pigmentation will be needed to achieve the same coloristic properties. BYK has responded to market demand and developed DISPERBYK-2023. This additive offers optimal dispersion and stabilization of organic pigments, as well as outstanding compatibility across a wide polarity range. DISPERBYK-2023 provides the formulation with virtually Newtonian flow behavior and contains a highly volatile solvent. The properties of DISPERBYK-2023 result in high application speeds with high printing quality and outstanding process reliability.

Anti-gellant Additive
BYKANOL-A
Anti-skinning Agent and Anti-gelling Additive for Solvent-borne Systems with Additional Batch Repair Properties
Oxidative drying systems require siccatives to accelerate the curing process after application. The oxygen in the container reacts with the system beforehand and causes a skin to form on the coating.
Benefits
• Prevents the formation of skin and the gelling of oxidative drying coatings
• Retroactive batch repair of gelled systems possible• Improved labeling of the additive• Aromatic-free
ACS201850 ADDITIVES
BYKANOL-A is based on a highly effective combination of active substances. The additive efficiently prevents a layer of skin from forming by creating a highly volatile complex with the siccative, which inhibits premature drying. When applyingthe system, the siccative/active substance complex is destroyed and the highly volatile BYKANOL-A evaporates with the solvents. The released siccative can deploy its catalytic effect and ensures fast and comprehensive drying of the coating film.
BYKANOL-A efficiently suppresses the gelling of the coating in the coating matrix, e.g. with alkaline pigments. It is also free from aromatic solvents.

REACH Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals
REACH is a regulation of the entire European Economic Area (EEA) that aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, and enhance the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry.
To help customers understand how REACH impacts North American manufacturers, we have appointed an Only Representative (OR). The appointment of an OR is a strategic agreement that allows us to assist our customers who manufacture and export products containing BYK additives to the EU. See the schedule on pages 66–73 for a live REACH tutorial.
General information about REACH can be found on the ECHA website.
Ask your BYK representative for a link to our interactive REACH support.
