Belinda came home with a pain in her –

Don’t be misled,

Belinda came home with a pain in her head!

Gen. Booth’s dau. married a Cap. Slater. After the wedding a touching

address was given by Gen. Booth, when the bride asked permission to

address the people also. After expaciating on the joys & sorrows of life,

its uncertainty etc, she said “Who knows what a day may bring forth.

Tonight Tuesday I shall be in my husband’s arms. Tomorrow I may be

on Abraham’s bosom”, when a voice from the crowd exclaimed “& pray

are you engaged on Thursday?”

Mr. Walsh, in the grocery trade? Sylvia’s prayer “Pray God take Walla’s

(illeg) to heaven & leave all that remains with us for ever & ever Amen.

Monday 1 January

In bed all day, feel v. seedy. Letters fr. Lin, Maud, & Edgar. Only down in

drawing room for tea & dined with Edie who returned from Con’s at 6

o’c. Seems to have greatly enjoyed her visit, Conrad pleased with her

music. Effie, Geoff, Madame Gomez, Mr. & Mrs. Rooth go to Pyt House

for concert tomorrow, not Conrad.

Tuesday 2 January

In bed till 12.30. Only Lady Bergne called, general feeling of

disatisfaction at War Office. Edie to Stores for me to send off chocolate

to dear Edgar. Edie left for Hamburg after dinner. V. sorry to go, much

taken with Con & Eff. Letter fr. Maudie arrived home from Nymans today.

Emma out evening could not have them to dinner. Letter fr. Millie Tassel

about her sister.

In bed till 12.30. Darling Maud to luncheon & tea, Mr. & Mrs. Messel

dining with her tonight. Lin & Roy return from Pyt House Wilts. Roy

dining here 8.30. Lin at club, & to Punch dinner after. Mrs. Neely (Miss

Payton) came to tea. Roy returned at 9 o’c. Train late.

Thursday 4 January

Out at 3.30 pouring wet to Whiteleys & Barkers. X. Edgar sails with the

7th division for S. Africa today. Lennie & Maud dined here, Lin’s birthday.

Roy in late to dinner! With the Mays. Met Mr. Muriel & Ld Herbert all

fools together poor things. Slept badly.

Friday 5 January

Lovely morg. Gillie to luncheon. Mr. Marsden called about a bust of

Tennyson by Sir E.Boehm. Lin vexed, I saw him. Slept badly. Mr. M.

fetched bust 7 o’c evg. X. Man came about dining room curtains, had

them & cornice down & lunched in morg. room. Gillie here. Drove her to

Harrods, Miss Fletchers, called on Mrs. Gill, Miss Carmental(?) & Miss

Neaves, saw Mrs. Gill. Dined v. late.

Saturday 6 January

Went morg. bought flowers Earls Court Rd. Lin, Roy & self to matinée

“David Garrick” Wyndhams new theatre. Maudie met us there. Met

Lennie coming out, drove them home. Quiet evg.

Sunday 7 January

Mr. Bret Harte dines here 8 o’c & Mrs. Turquand. Mr. Douglas unable to

come at last moment. Mr. Molesworth called. Lin & Roy started for

Calais, weather too bad, returned. Mr. Bret Harte seemed v. seedy, ate

nothing. Sp. came in morg. looks v. seedy. Mackay out evening.

Monday 8 January

Lin to Mr. Lucas in dog cart, Wickham Market Suffolk. Called on Mrs.

Fildes, Stone & Hunter, & Cowards only in, charming house & on Miss

Goodenough & Mrs. Palgrave Simpson on foot! Quiet evg, tray in

drawing room.

Tuesday 9 January

Gillie came in time for luncheon. I breakfasted in bed. Out morg. in

carriage. Fanny Nembhard & several others called. Maudie here, also

Mary & Mrs. Macqueen, Miss Chapman.

Wednesday 10 January

Walked morg. with Gillie. Sent adv. to Morg. Post. Maud to luncheon,

had her teeth done at Mr. Herberts, Gillie with her. Gillie with her at 3 to

Sales to choose tiles for country. Sat in all afternoon. Mrs. Nurdin(?) to

tea brought a lovely girl Miss Graham White with her. Maudie stayed

until 6 o’c. V. seedy poor darling with her little F. Mackay out. Mr. Bret

Harte sent me his last book “Jack Hamlin’s Mediation” & other stories.

Man did windows. X. Saw Millie & Annie Tassel.

Thursday 11 January

Lovely morning. Long letters fr. Lin & Bret Harte. Walked morning lovely

day. Gillie on to see Maudie. We dine with M. tonight if Lin & Roy do not

return, Lin fr. Suffolk & Roy fr. Pyt. Put advertisement in Papers. Gillie &

self made some calls.

Friday 12 January

Gillie left morg. Walked part of way with her. Lin returned morg. greatly

enjoyed his visit. Roy v. idle & discontented generally. Maid came last

night & work too much!

Saturday 13 January

Lady came about Tweddle. Cap. & Mrs. Christie, v. nice people. Fire in

morning room. Out calling at 3.30.

Mr. Bret Harte called. Lin hard at work. Walked to Sp’s, he walked back &

lunched here. Mr C. Hunter ill, enquired for him. Lennie & Maud dined

here alone. Mackay out afternoon.

Monday 15 January

Maud & self to tea at Mrs. Mount Battens. M. unable to come, went alone,

met Nembhards, Mabel Wallace, Mr. Sant etc there. Maudie came to stay

for 2 nights, Lennie shooting in Lincolnshire.

Tuesday 16 January

Out morg. with Maud. Mrs. Mocatta May & Fanny Nembhard etc called.

Delightful evg. with Maud here, Roy rather morose & idle.

Wednesday 17 January

Letter fr. Edgar fr. Teneriffe. Maudie morg. to dentist. Out shops alone.

Met Baby & Muriel. Baby much grown. Mr. Spottiswood came to

luncheon awful (illeg) everything all anyhow. Tweddle out for day.

Tabbie came to tea. Maudie left us at 6 o’c. Roy & self & Douglas to “The

only way”. Roy on after to sup. Savoy.

Thursday 18 January

Lovely morg. Invite to dine Heilberts, unable to go. Lin dines with

Schomberg McDonnell at Marlboro’ Club previous to his starting for S.

Africa. Roy returns to Oxford tonight. Called on Mrs. Dickens, Hogarth,

Mr. Hartree’s to enquire, Cap. Heathorne & Lady R. Christie. Roy left for

Oxford, afraid he is much in debt.

Friday 19 January

Out morg. walking. Made calls afternoon. Lin finished work 9 o’c. Emilie

came to see me, wants to leave her place, not enough to do! Called &

saw darling Maud & had Baby down, so sweet.

Out morg shops. Pd. books 3 weeks. Lin & self to see “Mystical Miss”

American piece de Wolf Hopper & Jessie Mackay good. Gt. excitement a

cook at 15 Argyll Road hanged herself. Lin & self walked down Park.

Quiet evening in morning room.

Sunday 21 January

Dull morg. In. Lin in. Mackay to Church. Lennie & Maud dine here. V.

lively both had been to their country house. No one called. Lin in

working. I in all day. Mackay church morg.

Monday 22 January

Drove at 3 Maud’s. Mrs. Wallace & Mabel there. Baby sweet. Saw Waddie

news of Dora. Saw Mrs. Paxton long talk on war & domes. Enquired after

Sir W. Priestley, same, & called & saw Mrs. Sidney Cotton.

Tuesday 23 January

Out 11 carriage, met Mrs. P. Holland. Mrs. Finlay, Miss Neaves, Mrs.

Paxton & Maud, C. Bergheim & Mrs. Gill called. Lin & self dine at Maud’s,

Mr. Allen only there. Beautiful dinner beautifully served & waited, silver

brass & flowers all perfect. Mdes. Finlay Neeves, Paxton, Maud,

Bergheim & Gill called.

Wednesday 24 January

In all morg. Dine with Maud.

Thursday 25 January

Walked morg. shops. Lin v. busy with Otley. Went at 4 o’c to Maud’s,

saw Baby. M. out. To Mrs. Agnews (P) saw her & her children, both v.

pretty. Cards to Mrs. Parish. Two Miss Lawrences called, v. interesting

talk with them.

Friday 26 January

To Sales about chair for Maud. Sent old black screen I gave Mother in

place of chair. Sales will send it to M. & sell rest 3 articles. To enquire

3.30 Mrs. a’Beckett, still in bed. Barkers, & took Moore miniature to be

framed “Bulls”. Roy arrived to eat 3 dinners & to Covent Garden ball

after. V. late.

Saturday 27 January

Out morg. shops. Roy in, rather tiresome mood, idling about. To matinée

of “Midsummer nights dream” Lovely. Florrie Blair came to stay till

Thursday. Saw common little maid. Roy to eat his dinner.

Sunday 28 January

V. cold. In all day. F. to church & to see Uncle Edwin after 3.30. Lennie &

Maud dined here, M. with cold. Roy left for Oxford during dinner. Has

eaten 3 Bar dinners. No one called.

Monday 29 January

V. cold. Bad news fr. War, Spion Kop abandoned after loss & wasted

labour. Out morg. to Hunts, Piercey’s & Labings(?) toujours la même

cause. Lunched alone with Lin. Florence to see Aunt Netta. Went by

omnibus to Maud’s at 4, cold, rain. Mrs. Hohler, Kettle, Reynard there.

Maud’s cold bad. Lin, Florrie & self to “Palace” V. good.

Tuesday 30 January

V. cold. Out at 11 in brougham with Florrie to Academy & to see Van

Dykes. Called at Maud’s saw Baby. M’s cold bad & Nana ill, poor darling.

Florrie lunched out. Mabel Wallace, two Miss Ecksteins!! Mrs. Reeve,

Mrs. Caldecott called.

Wednesday 31 January

Mrs. Finlay’s for tea 5 o’c. Called with Florrie also on Maggie Hadley,

Miss Neaves, in, May Nembhard, in, Mrs. Wheen. Met Mrs. & Miss Max

O’Reily(?) at Finlays & Mlle Ardite, & to Maud’s. Baby v. sweet lying on

floor kicking. Florrie & self quiet evg. alone.

Thursday 1 February

Florrie Blair left us for the Edwins after tea. My cold heavy. Went for

sharp walk round pond. In all afternoon. Lin & self to St James for first

night of new piece sequel to “Prisoner of Zenda” bad & poor plot,

exquisitely mounted, brilliant audience. Prince of Wales & Duke &

Duchess of Fife there.

Friday 2 February

V. cold. My cold uncomfortable. Sent final call on one City B.A. Trams. X.

In all day snow & sleet. V. cold.

Saturday 3 February

V. seedy indeed with cold. In all day sitting in Lin’s room. V. cozy there.

Heavy snow. No news of darling M. for 2 days.

Sunday 4 February

Warmer, snow still lying. In bed till 12.30, cold v. bad & chest ached.

Expect Maud & Lennie to dinner 8 o’c. Lin to club after luncheon. V. dull

for him with me seedy.

Monday 5 February

Final call of £1 on City of B. Ayres Trams. Sent this Friday last. Very

seedy with cold, in bed till after tea. Maudie came with Nonie, brought

lovely flowers & arranged them. Maudie 8 to dine & to Ball tonight afraid

she is doing too much. Letter fr. Midge.

Tuesday 6 February

X. Ami. In bed till 12.30 cold bad. Florrie Blair, Mrs. Calderon, P.Agnew,

May Nembhard, Maggie Hadley, Fanny Fildes, Mrs. Hunter called. Mrs.

Neely came to stay arrived about 5 o’c. Quiet evg. to bed early. Lin doing

Paris Ex. drawing. Maudie dining Hohlers.

In bed till 12.30. Baby came morg. V. cold hard frost. Miss Payton out

morg & afternoon for me. To Maudies. Baby brought me Maud’s ball

bouquet.

Thursday 8 February

Lucy Fearns came. F. Tweddle left. In bed till 12.30. Darling Maud came

stayed to luncheon & tea. Does not seem well, v. bad cold like mine.

Mrs. C. Burnand & Charlie called, & Ada Spencer called, saw them.

Lovely bright clear v. cold day. Sent Maudie back in carriage. Mrs. Neely

went about Midge’s chair, & house front.

Friday 9 February

In all day. Mrs. Neely shop’g for me, Hyacinths! Wish the dear thing

would not talk so much, most tiring.

Saturday 10 Frbruary

Mr. Fletcher Moulton’s dinner 8.15. Unable to go self, bad cold. Mrs.

Ackers called whilst we were at luncheon, stayed some time. Lin to

Club. Mrs. Neely & self drove round Park, left cards at at W. Priestley’s.

Darling Maud & Lennie called & had tea morg. room. Lin had a v.

pleasant evg. F.M’s. Took down Lady Romers’ dau. Heavy snow.

Sunday 11 February

Snow, not so cold. V. windy. Maud & Lennie to dinner 8 o’c. Lin to Club

after luncheon. Sp, Mr. Ryle, Mr. & Mrs. Galbraith & Ethel English called.

Mrs. Neely out to tea. V. cold evening.

Monday 12 February

Mollie O’Connell’s wedding to Mr. Guiles Del Rios, 26 Overand Mansions

S.W. V. cold in bed till 12 o’c. V. bad head ache. Mrs. Neely did shops &

flowers for me & went to see Aunt Barbara. Sent her £3.0.0, tea, petticoat

& flowers. I drove to Nash, Waddies, & Haines about Midge’s house.

Tuesday 13 February

In bed till 12.30. Mrs. Neely did shops for me & flowers. Awful day. Mrs.

Goodchild, Mrs. & Miss Oates called friends of Mrs. Neely’s. No one

else. Maud & Lennie dined out.

Wednesday 14 February

Miss Mackenzie’s marriage with Mr. F.K.Slade, 2.15. Unable to go far too

ill. In bed till 12.30. Dr Orton called. Awful day.

Thursday 15 February

In bed till 12.30. Mr. Hartree & Belita Drabble Stevens called & stayed

some time. Awful headache.

Friday 16 February

In bed till 12.30. Darling Maud came to see me. Mrs. Neely went to see

Mrs. Watney about engagement, won’t do. Mrs. Neely & I drove out

simply for drive.

Saturday 17 February

In bed till 12.30. Lin hard at work all day. V. wet. Drove to get sausages,

flowers fruit etc. Lin gave me £1.0.0 for fruit etc. Bought 2 partridges.

Letter fr. Edgar, Midge, & Tabbie. Sat in morg. room. Had 2 snipe for

dinner.

Sunday 18 February

In bed till 12.30. Mrs. Neely to see friend afternoon. No one called. Lin

out after luncheon. Lennie & Maud unable to come to dine, Lennie with

v. bad cold.

Monday 19 February

In bed till 12 o’c. Mrs. Neely to Maud’s. Lennie v. seedy, his birthday.

Drove at 3 to Stores for Lennie’s present, de Bretts peerage £1.3.7½! Met

Uncle & Aunt Edwin. Lionel leaving tomorrow for S. Africa in “Goorka”

the same ship Edgar went in. To Salviatos, chose present for Miss

Tuesday 20 February

Mrs. Kettle’s dinner 7.45. In bed till 11.30. Mrs. Neely to choose fowl

Whiteleys. Showery day. Mrs. Magne, Miss Schwann & Mrs. Sutton with

her 2 daughters, youngest engaged & to be married in April.

Wednesday 21 February

Out for an hour bath chair 2/-. Called on Dr Smiles, Mrs. Baines, Mrs.

English & Mrs. Welby, bought braid. A Miss Tucker called on Mrs. Neely.

Emma & Lucy out. E. to theatre.

Thursday 22 February

Linley dines with the Messels 7.45. Morg. out for 2 hours in bath chair 3/-

. Mrs. Neely & self at 3.30 to call on Lady Lucas, Mrs. Rubens, Mrs.

Macquoid, Aunt Linda & darling Maud’s. Mrs. Messel there. Lennie

looking v. ill, darling M. pale. Barkers for marmalade & soap. Mackay out

evening.

Friday 23 February

Out for one hour in bath chair. To Barkers about Midge’s bill, pd. it.

Redmayne, Swears & Wells, Woolland, Heath etc. Dined at 9 with Lin.

Mrs. Neely out, in for dinner.

Saturday 24 February

Out for hour bath chair. To Criterion 2.30 unable to get places. Called on

Mrs. Mocatta, Mrs. Lindo & Maud. Lennie still looking v. ill. Maudie not

well either. Baby v. well. Lin out afternoon. Mrs. Neely out again after

late tea.

Sunday 25 February

Dull. Silver mustard spoon missing. Mr. Paxton & Sp. called. Lin to see

Lennie after tea. Quiet evg. alone.

Missed ivory & silver pistol fr. table. In all morg. Orton called, most un-

necessary! Mrs. Neely washed my laces. At 3.30 to Stores & called on

Lady Monckton. Lin out all day.

Tuesday 27 February

Mrs. Reynard’s dinner unable to go. Packed morg. Found pistol

supposed to be lost in drawer. Conrad called just as I was leaving, looks

thin & (illeg). Came by Granville to Ramsgate. Mrs. Neely to Station with

me & after to spend time in my absence at some Christian Association

place. Found darling Maud at Ramsgate Sta. drove on together. Lennie

still looking v. delicate. Clean bright comfortable Hotel Saint Cloud. Fire

& flowers in my room all darling M’s thought & doing. X. Cronje

surrendered with 4300 men Paardeburg unconditionalally. Anniversary

of Ma(illeg)

Wednesday 28 February

V. cold. In bed till 11.30 readiong. Dull. 3 letters fr. Lin!!! Walked thro’

Ramsgate with Maud & Lennie after luncheon. Quiet evening, feel better.

Still more good news fr. S. Africa, Rensburg.

Thursday 1 March

V cold east wing. Bright & sunny. X. News of relief of Lady Smith. Maud

& Lennie to Canterbury. Talk with old gentleman & lady at luncheon.

They know many mutual friends, Petos, Tomlins, Friends, Isaacs. Lennie

& M. both completely done up evg. M’s corn v. bad.

Friday 2 March

Lovely day, bitterly cold. Walked to Mrs. Heading after luncheon. Mrs.

Evans called morg. Lennie & Maud in bath chair out all afternon. Quiet

evening. Maud met B.Weigall, Miss Warre, May Hood & K. O’Reilly. Mrs.

Evans called morg.

Saturday 3 March

Lennie to Deal. Tea Mrs. Evans. Maud had little boy model morg. Lin

arrives by Granville. Arrived v. late at Mrs. Evans & left soon to meet Lin

at Sta. Mr. & Mrs. Burnand & Mary came by same train. Wretched wet &

cold. Maudie in bath chair her foot so bad. Quiet evg. & bed early. Lin

looks tired, has seen Critchett about his eyes & finds comfort fr. new

properly adjusted glasses.

Sunday 4 March

V. cold wind, bright & sunny. Walked morg. alone. Lennie Maud & Lin

walked on Pier. Too much for Maud, foot bad after. Met Burnands.

Lennie & self for walk to Dumpton Gap, home by sands for tea. Lin to Sir

William Agnews at Deal after luncheon.

Monday 5 March

Bright morg. Bitterly cold wind. Lennie & Lin to Margate for day, found

dog. Maud & self sat out morg. in sun. Met Bay Noott. After lunch Maud

drew small boy model. I walked some distance with Mr. & Mrs. F.C.B.

who came to call, asking us to dine, too cold. Flowers 6d. Mr. Evans

called stayed some time. Mrs. Rooth, Dossie & young Daniels called &

saw Lin & Lennie, seems gentlemanly young man. Quiet evg. to bed 10

o’c.

Tuesday 6 March

Bright morg, not so cold. Out morg. with Lin who as usual must buy.

Saw Doggie at Hills, really not bad. Called after lunch on Mrs. Hammond,

Lennie with me, he waited outside. Mrs. Pugin & Eilie to call, found Mrs.

Hammond as handsome as ever. Mary Burnand called. Maud v. busy

drawing. X. Maud little F. & looks v. seedy. Maudie out in chair. Miss

Warre & Mr. Evans called.

Wednesday 7 March

V. cold wind. Lennie & Lin walked along shore to Broadstairs. I tried to

meet them, returned without doing so. Talk with Mr. Curtis who leaves

him to Broadstairs to call on Mrs. Noott, out. Met Mrs. Bartram &

travelled & walked back with her & dau. Maudie in bath chair with

Lennie. Tea, & quiet dinner. Maud still looking v. delicate.

Thursday 8 March

Dull morg. Out morg. Mary Burnand came & walked with us as far as

Mrs. Pugin’s where I had tea, Maud & L. returning. M. in bath chair.

Glorious afternoon but bitterly cold east wind.

Friday 9 March

Lovely day, cold wind. Sat out morg. & drove at 4 o’clock to tea at Miss

Warre’s & to Mrs. Buck’s. Awful smell there! Lennie walked home & did

not go in. Saw Mr. Warre, looks very shaky. Quiet evg. Lin worried by

Burnand & delayed by work. Sad news of Mr. Winchester Clowes & Sir

Charles Hall.

Saturday 10 March

Glorious morg. Darling Maud & Lennie leaving today. Lin arrives by

Granville. Invitation fr. Mrs. Burnand for us all to dine there tomorrow or

Monday. Saw Lennie & Maud off. Met Lin, walked back with him. Quiet

evg. Little talk with Mr. Anderson amused us with a young man’s

conversation on War, Generals & statesman generally.

Sunday 11 March

Lovely day, cold wind. Walke on Pier with Lin. After luncheon Lin for

cycle ride. Miss Warre & Dolly Barter called. Walked alone & Lin & self

dined at Burnands & had bad indigestion & felt sick result of eating

green vegetables last night. Mr. & Mrs. Evans at F.C.B’s. Played spoof.

Fly there & back.

Monday 12 March

Lovely day. Walked morg with Lin. Lin cycled after lunch. I went to tea at

Mrs. Nootts, saw young Daniels there. Met Mrs. Evans coming back in

Mrs. H. Levy’s drawing room tea. X. Petit ami. Au lit until 4 o’c. Tea

alone drawing room, spoke to Mrs Stacey about Mrs Neely. Long letter

from darling M. Lin to Calais for day.

Wednesday 14 March

Dull foggy morg. In bed till 3.30 when Linley left for London. V. funny

letter from Maud about Mice. Lin looks extremely well. Wire from Mrs.

Tweedie. Dined alone, 2 old gentlemen, single ditto, Patholi(?) lady, Mr &

Mrs. Anderson , self! Dull. V. funny letter fr. Roy returns home Saturday.

Mr. Souby & Sir James Segar Hunt called to see Lin morg.

Thursday 15 March

Mrs. Turquand’s dinner at 8 o’c. Lin going alone. Dull cold day. In bed till

3.30. Had tea in Hall sitting room with Mr. & Mrs. Anderson, singularly

dull individual. Dined alone in new salle a manger. Bright (illeg), & to my

room. Reads Lord Robert’s book “Forty one years in India” & wrote

three letters.

Friday 16 March

Dull morg. Feel better for rest. Letter fr. Mrs. Tweedie. Mr. Soobey called

stayed some time.Talk with Mr. & Mrs. Anderson. Found Patholi(?) lady

tedious rather after dinner.

Saturday 17 March

Out in bath chair, 2 hours, v. cold. Lin arrived by Granville, Roy at 10 o’c

with bad cold, had my old room.

Sunday 18 March

Mrs. Tweedie’s dinner 8 o’c. 30 York Terrace. Unable to go. Out morg in

bath chair. Met Mr. Burnand & Squire, Lin & Roy, we went along parade

dinner. V. cold & ½ a gale blowing all night. Mr. Spielmann called.

Monday 19 March

V. cold wind. In all morg. Out at 2.30 with Lin & Roy in bath chair, saw

boat which which was brought in disabled this morg. after storm. 8

torpedo boats passed. Lin & Roy on to Col. Churchill owner of lost dog.

Had cocoa in hall & long talk with Mr. & Mrs. Anderson. Report of relief

of Mafeking.

Tuesday 20 March

Lin & Roy to Calais. Walked morg. lovely day, no wind. Went in bath

chair to St Peters, pd. man 3/-. Sat out after lunch met Sir Joseph

Montefiore & Lady Rose W. & daughter, had long talk with them. Had tea

with the Andersons, much nicer when one knows them better.

Wednesday 21 March

Mrs. Spielmann’s dinner cannot go. Lin Roy & self returned from

Ramsgate by 3.30, lovely sunny morg. cold wind. Had walk with Lin &

Roy on Pier, magnificent sea. Foolishly pocketed key of my book &

could not unpack!

Thursday 22 March

Dull & cold. Maudie to luncheon. Baby came at 3 looking v. sweet & well,

most lively. I went for character of Midge’s cook, good. To Aunt Linda’s

heard about Lionel. Barkers & home. Quiet evening. Called saw Waddie.

Friday 23 March

V. cold. Out morg. & at 3 to Maud’s, out, took cook’s character today not

yesterday & to stores to get chocolate & meat lozenges for Edgar.

matinée, Lin joined us there. Walked part of way home, cab rest. Lin,

Bitterly cold east wind. Walked with Lin to Hyde Pk Corner, home in

omnibus. Roy in to lunch, Lin out. Lennie & Maud to dinner.

Monday 26 March

Out morg. V. cold. Mrs. Neely called as we were dressing for dinner.

Conrad came at 6 o’clock & Lin & self went to Hippodrome. Con & Roy

followed after. Wonderful performance of cats & dogs, 21 lions. Midgets

v. good, conjuring & acrobats. Horse & water swimming & diving. Saw

Mr. Heilbut & Mr. & Mrs. Mackenzie of Seaforth & party.

Tuesday 27 March

Out walking morg. Mary Nicol & Con to lunch. Mrs. Harry Henderson,

Mrs. Macquoid & Mrs. Cameron Corbett called. Dined 6.30. Lin, Con, Roy

& self to Daly’s “San Toy”. V. good. Duchess of Fife there. Edna May’s

sister in box opposite. Maud wired for Roy to dine & go to Palace with

them. Maud lunched Mrs. Lucy, was much admired, letter fr. Mr. Lucy to

say so!

Wednesday 28 March

Dull grey cold. At 11.30 to pay bills for Midge & to see Waddie. Con out

to lunch. Con, Roy & self to Maud’s to dinner 8 o’c. Lin to Punch dinner.

Roy cycling. Tabs comes up to town today.

Thursday 29 March

Put advertisement on Morg. Post for tomorrow for Midge. Walked morg.

Effie & Ethel E. called. Called with Conrad 4 o’c on Mrs. Geilgud, Tate,

Romer, saw Miss Romer, Galbraith, Ryle, & Tabs at Coburg. Lennie &

Still v. cold. Effie & Ethel E. called. Walked with them to Bank & walked

on after to Woollands & to lunch with Tabbie at Coburg where Con

joined us. Went after shop’g with Tabs & bad tea there. Ham came in.

Met Mrs. Geiger in Bond St. Maud lunched here & went with Roy to

Varsity Sports Queen’s Club. Capt Heathorne called & stayed some time.

Lin finished work early, & to meeting of Royal Com. Con & Roy after

dinner to meet the English party at theatre, Don Juan.

Saturday 31 March

Mrs. Lindo’s dinner, can’t go. Boat Race, Cam. won. Lin & Roy to race.

Eff & Ethel called morg. Shop’d & walked. Drove at 4 o’c Waddie’s. To

see Baby in his bath, again decorated my best dress! Con, Lin & self

quiet evg. Roy out. Picked up mysterious blue silk square on stair case,

thought it was Roy’s! it was not. 4 answers to advertisement for Midge’s

P.maid.

Sunday 1 April

Lin Roy & Con to Calais. Lennie & Maud remain at Glovers until Tuesday

evg. Out walking morg with Con’s little dog. Baby came afternoon, was

v. sweet. V. cheery evg. Lin met many friends at Calais & on steamer.

Monday 2 April

Lord Robertson’s dinner 8 o’c. Only Lin going. Sent 1st allotment of £30

to C.Hambro & Son, making £35. Paid for £100 City of Christiana 4%

loan. Long letter fr. dear Edgar. Dullish dinner.

Out morg. Darling M & Lennie return fr. Glovers. No one called. Box at

Haymarket. Lin, Con, Roy & Ethel E. & Effie went & self. “The Rivals” . V.

Mrs. Grantham’s dinner. Lucy Fearns going to Australia in June! Our

area gate fell off its hinges into area smashing all spokes & doing

Friday 6 April

Lin got work done early & we all went to see “His Excellency” delightful

play v. funny. Roy dining with Mr. Hoghan, in fairly early.

Accident to carriage near Maiden Lane. Roy, Con & self drive to Rule’s &

lunch with Lin. To “Messenger Boy” after. Roy & Lin returned home

together & Con & self called on Mrs. English, saw Eff & Ethel, been to

San Toy. Quiet evg. morg. room. Con & gramophone! Darling Maud &

family go to Glovers!

Walked morg called on Mrs. Mackenzie. Lin busy with little jobs all morg.

Cycled after. Fritz Jackson called. Mrs. Neely to lunch & dinner. We went

to see Fildes, Stones & Colin Hunter’s pictures. Met usual dowdy set!

Mrs. Steincopff dinner. No one called. In all day. Midge, Hamilton & Dora

arrived evg fr. Buenos Ayres after v. rough passage. Otley called on way

fr, Mrs. Steincopff’s. Bad news again fr. S. Africa & Gadacre(?) recalled.

Chernside fr. Gen Tucker’s Brigade appointed to take his place as chief

of 3rd Brigade. Roy & self alone.

Wednesday 11 April

In bed till 12.30. Went at 2.30 to see Midge, found H, D. & Midge & Mr.

Frisby there. Midge looking seedy. Took Dora on with me to Marshall &

Willatts, Marshall & Snelgroves, Ball & Turner & home to tea here. She

took cab back. Lin & Roy dined at 9 o’c, same as Friday on account of

Easter. Tabbie in town with Gwen & Eve at Coburg.

Thursday 12 April

Gleamy day. In bed till 12.30. Drove at 3 to Whiteley, flowers, bananas,

Angrave, Ball & Turner. Dora & Ham dined here. Midge v. seedy

influenza & Orton attending. Wire fr. Lennie for Roy to go today. He goes

tomorrow D.V. Lin & Roy to Palace after dinner. H. & D. stayed until 11 &

had lively horse in hansom going back, glad Midge was not there. Letter

fr. Maudie.

Friday 13 April

V. windy, & gleams of sun. In bed till 12.30. Roy went to Glovers, we go

tomorrow. Midge v. seedy in bed with temperature up. H. & Dora to Pyt

for Easter. Quiet day, no one came but man for electric light which he

mended everywhere.

Saturday 14 April

Mackay & I came to “Glovers” by 10.50 train. Roy met us in one cart, boy

in another for luggage. Lovely day but cold wind. Found darling Maud,

Baby & Lennie well & grounds charming both outside & in. Mr. & Mrs.

Messel, Mr. & Mrs. Val Geilgud to luncheon. Everything looking lovely,

Sunday 15 April

Lovely day. Darling M. & Lennie to Church, I remaining at home. Sat out

but wind cold. Racket courts great recourse to Lennie & Roy.

Monday 16 April

Lennie & Roy in Ralli cart & chestnut mare on trial, & Maud & self in

nursery cart & Linley cycled to Nymans. Lin arrived too late for

luncheon. Mrs. Messel’s carriage met us at Crawley. The Geilguds still at

Nymans & a number of people came to tea with children to find Easter

eggs hidden in grounds. V. pleasant day. Maudie ret’d fr. Crawley with

Lennie in cart, Roy coming with me. Lin cycled back.

Tuesday 17 April

Lin & Lennie to Reigate. Letter fr. Tabbie asking if she could come to us

on Saty next to await Mervyn & Ethel’s arrival. Dora remaining on at Pyt.

Hamilton returned yesterday.

Wednesday 18 April

Mrs. Messel, Mrs. Geilgud & Ruth came over for lunch & tea. Lovely day.

Lennie took number of photos. Most lovely day like summer. Maudie v.

tired. We all drove to Horsham after luncheon the men on cycles & Maud

& self in cart. I drove brown pony. Had tea there. Lennie bought silver.

Delightful drive enjoyed it immensely.

Thursday 19 April

Lovely day. Mrs. Messel, Ruth & Mrs. Geilgud to luncheon & tea.

Glorious day like summer. Roy remaining here until tomorrow. Maudie

so tired & feverish unable to come down to dinner, went to bed & had a

hot bath. Mr. Eward to dinner remained v. late 11.30. I sat with Maudie

after dinner.

Friday 20 April

Lovely day. Roy left at 10 o’c. supposed to be returning to Oxford

tomorrow, or tonight. New ducks arrived. Mr. H. Hemming came by a

morning train, more conversational than I thought. Maudie in bed all day

v. seedy indeed, head bad & she seems generally run down.

Saturday 21 April

Lovely hot & sunny day. Maudie up at 11 better but looks delicate &

pale. Cannot imagine what it is with her (illeg) in this lovely place! Sat

out all day. Lennie & Mr. Hemming planted primroses along bank. 8 new

pigeons arrived. Lennie & Mr. H. to Lowfield Heath to order plants. Letter

fr. Roy not returning to Oxford until next week. V. tiresome, he must

have known.

Sunday 22 April

Lovely morg. warm as June. Sat out all day long. Mr. & Mrs. Bone

pronounced Boune! Young couple who have taken the Hohler’s house.

Monday 23 April

Lennie to business morg. Ruth & Muriel over to luncheon & tea. To

woods for primroses. Lennie told us of new arrangement to start fr.

October increase in his income again!!! Lovely day. Letter fr. Roy only

returning to Oxford next Friday. Mr. Hemming left with Lennie, much

nicer then I thought.

Tuesday 24 April

Lin returned by 2.50 train, slight accident to cart! Thankful it was no

worse. Much colder & not so bright. Lennie tired evg. after day with

Monsieur F. Darling Maud’s throat bad & eye inflamed, seems generally

out of sorts & below par. Long letter fr. Edgar fr. Bloemfontein, also

extracts fr. Sophy’s letters which I forwarded to Midge after reading.

Wednesday 25 April

V. cold, dull & rain. Worked & read, & gathered firewood!

Friday 27 April

V. cold & dull. Maudie & Nurse busy with sofa’s corners, I had Baby as

usual a saint. In all day.

Saturday 28 April

X. Lovely day. Dr Parker came saw Maud & Baby. V. sensible man & v.

clever. Lennie coming home at 3 fr. city. Lin & Mr. Guthrie on cycles

between 3 & 4. We all dine at Mrs. Ansdell’s, they send their carriage.

Very pleasant evg. Miss Armit only other guest. X. Letter forwarded by

mistake of Linley’s to model. Thorn.

Sunday 29 April

Pay £10 to Cent Argentine Rly allocated shares. Paid Saty 28th

yesterday. Lovely day still cold. Maudie X in bed still v. seedy. Cold day

rather. Lord Borthwick & his sister lunched here, she seems v. pleasant

& amusing. Lin looks seedy & long bicycle ride too much for him. Spoke

to him about “Thorn”.

Monday 30 April

Dull day. Mr. Guthrie & Lin returned to London. Mr. Ewart dined here.

Ruth arrived at tea time on a visit. Maudie still v. seedy, got down in time

for tea.

Tuesday 1 May

Lovely day. Lennie had holiday, rode & drove new horse or rather mare.

Gathered dandelions, 36. School children came up & sang with

Maypoles, Lennie photod them. Maudie v. seedy looks weak &

bloodless.

Sir Cuthbert Quilter’s smoking party 10.30. Letter fr. Lin, telegram later

fr. Ireland where he has gone on trial trip of some steamer. Maudie v.

seedy & rundown. Ruth left early. Lennie v. tired evg.

Thursday 3 May

Heavy rain. Lovely evening, brilliant rainbow. Dr Parker came to see

Maud. Must remain in bed quietly & rest. Letter fr. Lin, met Lord

Stalbridge & dined & sat in his compartment on trial trip to Ireland by

new steamer.

Friday 4 May

Maudie in bed all day v. seedy. Nothing of any significance happened.

Saturday 5 May

Lovely hot day. Mr & Miss Luscombe called & a v. pretty girl with them.

Lennie had whole holiday, rode & drove new mare. Lin came in time for

tea.

Sunday 6 May

Wet morg. cleared about 12 o’c. Baby & nurse in nursery cart to

Nymans. Lin & Lennie in dog cart & new horse. Maudie & self v. happy

day together. She seems better.

Monday 7 May

Due. Still about. Lin for cycle ride to Reigate. Quiet day. Maud better.

Tuesday 8 May

Mrs. Cyril Maude at home 3 to 5.30. Sat out all day. Drove at 3.30 to

Horley for shops. On return found Mr. & Mrs. Messel here & Lin not gone

for cycle ride, went after to Horley on cycle & played squash raquets

with Lennie. Made butter 6lbs wih Mrs. Newton & Maud morning, & over

miles north of Blomfontein.

Wednesday 9 May

Mrs. Sutton’s at home 10.30. Miss Chapman 4 - 7. Mrs. McLaren’s at

home to meet members of cycling club, 10 o’c. Letter fr. E.Mervyn. Lin

left on cycle at 1 o’c, had lunch here, his bags went up fr. Horley by

train.

Thursday 10 May

Dull day. Muriel, Miss Vaunce & old Nannie to lunch & tea. Letters fr. Lin

& Roy.

Friday 11 May

Mrs. Welby, Drawing room tea. Mrs. Emerton Bainbridge ditto. Etc etc.

Roy at Staf, Ter. with Lin, up for dinners, returns Sunday night. Maud &

self called on Mrs. White & drove to Horley, also on Rector, much

exhausted. Ruth & self went over church. Mrs. Hunter & later Mr.

Cazenove called. Ruth & Lennie for cycle ride. Letter fr. Lin.

Sunday 13 May

Lin & Roy to Sir Alfred Hickman’s for tennis & dinner. Went to Church

with Lennie Maud & Ruth. V. pleasantly surprised, nice short service.

Maudie v. seedy pain in side. Cold. Lennie & Ruth cycled & played

raquets.

Monday 14 May

Mrs. H. Levy drawing room tea 5 - 6. Ruth left directly after breakfast.

Cold. Maud still feeling v. seedy. Lin unable to come until tomorrow. Mr.

Gibson rector dined with us, odd man, distinctly excentric.

Tuesday 15 May

Mrs. Cyril Maude 3 to 5.30. Lin came down on cycle, v. bad influenza

cold. Arrived about 6.30. Lennie v. depressed. Maudie looking solemn in

consequence. Gathered wild hyacinths with Nurse Francis & darling

Baby.

Wednesday 16 May

Great packing of silver fear darling Maud v. tired. Returned to London by

2.39 train, Mackay & my fares 7/-, fees £1.0.0. Nurse Francis leaving

tonight to see her late charge, poor little thing dying of meningitis,

worried Maud dreadfully. Crawfurd remaining & Nana wired for. Mervyn

& Ethel dined here at 7.30, V. pleasant evg.

Thursday 17 May

Mrs. A. Welby’s dinner 8 o’c. Acp’t. (illeg) interesting dinner, badly

cooked & badly served. Walked to Midge’s, out, on to Maud. Went with

her to Dr Pollock thinks one ovary enlarged cause of pain, & care

needed. Maud with me to luncheon, left at 4 alone. Lennie & M. to

theatre. Lin’s cold bad.

Friday 18 May

Out morg. & M. to Redfern. Saw her fitted 2 dresses, home in her

carriage, left her at Mrs. Messel’s. Out at 4 in brougham to Miss Millais,

Kettle, Fritz, saw Mrs. Jackson, Reeve, Lawrence & Midge. A Gen Botha

taken pris.

Saturday 19 May

App’t Mrs. Young 3 o’c. Redfern 12 o’c. Unable to keep either. Relief of

Mafeking. X. Kept awake half the night with noise of shouting as the

news was made known late last night. Shop’d morg. called at Mr.

Hartree. Lin & self to matinée Prince of Wales. Martin Harvey “Rouget de

Lisle”, “Ab & little Christina” & Pantomime Reh. Midge & Dora to tea

after Ranelagh.

Out morg. To Redfern by om. Afternoon to Midge. Maud v. worried avec

menage. 2 lbs butter, flowers, to Young & arranged for 12 o’c Friday.

Wire fr. Sophy about Edgar. All well fr. War Office. Quiet evening, bed

early. Lin’s cold better, to Calais for day.

Tuesday 22 May

Mrs. Cyril Maude 3 - 5.30. Mrs. Welby & Maud to luncheon 1.30, & Mrs.

W’s sister. V. wet day. Met darling Maud at Redfern’s & drove home

together. Girls served luncheon nicely & quickly. V. wet afternoon.

Dinner at 6.15. Lin & self to “American Beauty”

Wednesday 23 May

Mrs. C. Corbett’s dinner, unable to go. I go alone. Mrs. Wheen’s at home

4 - 7. To be fitted Redfern 12 o’c. Conrad comes to us for a few days,

dined out. V. pleasant dinner at Mrs. C’s. Sat next to Mr. Kennard, v.

interesting young man with v. pretty wife, had travelled. Mr Cullan(?)

sang charmingly after dinner.

Thursday 24 May

Out morg. Called 4 o’c Mrs. Steincopff, saw Col & Mrs. Mackenzie of

Seaforth there. Pd several other calls. Darling Maud & Lennie dined

here. All in very good spirits. Maud met Bill W. at Temple Flower show

who wd. follow her about, Lennie v. angry.

Friday 25 May

Lady Quilter 5 - 6. To be fitted Young’s 12 o’c, late, went again 5. Out

morg. to Redfern’s was fitted. Home cab. Went for ½ hour to see

Ruskin’s collection of Turners at Fine Arts. Called Midge, Maud’s, out,

Mrs. Turquand, Threlfall, H. Levy, Mrs. Hankey & Lady Q. Lin, Con & self

dined at 8.30.

Con, Lin & self to matinée “Madame Butterfly” V. charming & sad little

piece. Cab home. Con dined at Midge’s. Dora, Ethel E. & Effie called

morg. V. delightful dinner Mrs. J.F’s. Mr. Kennedy took me in & Sir

Robert Head radical other side, most interesting. Mr. & Mrs. Milman & Sir

F. & Lady Hartland both asked me to call. Saw little maid asking £25!

Sunday 27 May

Out morg. Gardens, awful crowd of people like ants. Dora to lunch &

dinner. Con took her to Park, met Midge & Hamilton. Mr. Bret Harte

called, does not look well.

Monday 28 May

Out morg. to be fitted Redfern. Con & Lin to the Levée, back at 4.30. I

called on Mrs. Spofforth & Mrs. Gill. Tea with Con & Lin here 5 o’c & in

cab with Con to Midge’s about Dora, wire fr. Maud asking her to go.

Mrs. Cyril Maude 3 - 5.30. Out 11 o’c in brougham to Mrs. Mason & Mrs.

Graham après les filles. Met Spencer at Barkers. Effie Conrad lunched

here. Mrs. Turquand, Dora, Mrs. & Miss Enthoven & Miss Rose Innes

called. Conrad dined at the Hollands. J’ai vu jeune fille. Vingt livres de

gages, assez bien dîmes bien mauvais ce soir.

Wednesday 30 May

Mrs. Hankey 4 - 6.30. 2.30 Mrs. Young. 10 AM to Mrs. Coquhan(?) à

cause de jeune fille. Dora goes to Lennie & Maud at Mitre Hotel Oxford

until Friday. Out morg. rest after. To first night “Rip van Winkle” at

Haymarket, brilliant house. Wire fr. Mr. Spielman, Lin to go to Paris at

Saw job. parlourmaid fr. Mrs. Mason. Effie came morg. taken rooms near

Goring(?). Con returned to Worthing. I drove to Redfern with their gown

failure, promised for Saty morg. Marshalls, Barkers & Mrs. Roller, out.

Lin out after luncheon.

Friday 1 June

To the Oaks with Mr. D’Arcy. Wretched day, cold rain, unable to go.

Packed.

Saturday 2 June

Miss Grossmith’s wedding 2.30. To spend day at Oxford with Lennie

Maud & Roy. Packed evg, or finished rather. To Oxford by 9.40. To Hotel,

saw Maud, Lennie, Roy, Dora & Mr. Marriott. Bodleian Library, & lunched

in Roy’s rooms. Excellent & delicious luncheon. Tea at Hotel & home to

dinner. V. pleasant day. D. smoked to Roy’s disgust!

Sunday 3 June

Came to Paris by 11.40. Met Mr. Merryweather, lunched Calais with him.

Travelled to Amiens with Judge Snagge. V. entertaining & v. gallant!

Uncivil Frenchman got in at Amiens. Absence porters Paris, drunken

cabman. Comfortable room Grande Hotel du Trocadero overlooking

river. Good din. in a barrack empty room.

Monday 4 June

To Exhibition with Lin. Fearful crowd & great heat & dust. Magnificent

buildings, went thro’ Beaux Arts. Modern Japanese paintings. Rue des

Nations etc etc. Met Mr Davis lunched with him Continental. To Ex.

again. Dressed & hoped to dine at Ledoyens, no room, dined à la carte

Continental. Sat out again with Mr. Davis. Cabs everywhere v. (illeg) our

Hotel but good room.

Met Lin at Ledoyen 12 o’c. He arrived fr. Ex. with Mr. E.George architect,

little nervous restless man, nice but fatiguing conversation so detailed.

Had table facing garden. Went after to exhibition v. tiring thro’ galleries

& on (illeg) air soulant. Dined at (illeg) & Albion with the Spielmans,

Mons. George, Onlow Ford there also. Sat after with Sir J. Montefiore &

Admiral Keppel in corridor of Hotel. Had dinner badly served, great

difficulty in getting cab to go, arrived late.

Wednesday 6 June

Dossie Noott comes. X. Ami. Nothing at Louvre worth buying, dearer &

not half so pretty as our own shops. Went off to Mr Spielman & we went

Louvre & lunched at Duvals, bad cheap. Met Admiral Kepple at

Exhibition. Went thro’ Galleries. X. Petit ami on way to the Palais de

l’optique, had to return. Sat at Gates of Champs Elysee & saw Mrs. Pitt’s

young sister & Mr. & Mrs. Mills both sisters looking sweet. Also Sir J.

Montefiore. Cab home. Dined at Continental with Mr. Davis or rather he

with us. None of us went to Mons. Delcassé’s reception, Foreign

Minister.

Thursday 7 June

Lady Richmond 4 - 7. In bed till 11 o’c. Lunched at Hotel Trocadero

dreary barn of a room not a soul in it. Bad & expensive luncheon. Lin &

self dined with Mr E.George at Restaurant Henri, Rue St Augustin. Mr.

Davis, Mr. Onslow Ford & his son, Mr. & Mrs. Spielman, most excellent

dinner. Left in a hurry with Mrs. S & self faint. Stuffy heat when cigars

came. All except Mr. Davis & ourselves went to reception Mons.

Delcassé last evg. V. brilliant affair.

Friday 8 June

Letter fr. Ethel. Lucy Fearn leaves & temporary maid comes for fortnight.

X. Letter fr. Maud. Drove to Continental & dined there, sat after with Mr

Davis. Much interested watching love-sick man & 2 girls with old

gentleman, evidently enamoured with the blue blouse one! Lin lunched

Lovely morg. Lin to Ex. No judging today or tomorrow. Ham L. was to

arrive Paris last night for Grand Prix. Hamilton called at 11.30 just

bathing so c’d not see him & Lin out. H. staying with Spanish friend 21

Avenue d’Autin. Lin & self lunched Ledoyen saw lonely American girl

exquisitely dressed. Drove to Continental. Lin called at Embassy & we

drove after to American artist Mr. Alexander, 190 Boulv. Malesherbes. V.

charming wife etc. Dined Continental à la carte. Sat with Mr. Davis after.

Watched l’amoureuse!

Sunday 10 June

Lovely day, Grand Prix. H. going with Mons. V. Lin & self lunched

Ledoyens, met Mr. Davis & Mr. George & Mr. A. Henderson, Maggie &

Mr. Makins. To Louvre after, missed seeing the Rubens as closed at 4.

To Continental at 7.30. Mr. George dined with us there, 50 fr. din. Saw

people returning fr. Grand Prix. Sat in courtyard with Mr. Davis &

General Hawkins, American & v. entertaining. Amourants there.

Monday 11 June

Lady Hickman’s at home. Golden wedding! 4.30 - 7. Mrs. Rawlinson 4 - 7.

Ethel & Mervyn come to stay. Lin lunching with Commission. V. v. hot.

Lin at Ex. all day. Went to Bon marché, had chocolate (illeg), good. V.

hot day bought (illeg) boa (illeg). Met Lin at 4 o’c outside Beaux Arts. Mr.

Stapleton came & talked. Took cab to Hotel dressed & went to Ledoyens

dined there outside, dire confusion! To Ambassadeurs 8/- wasted, bad.

Fiacre back.

Tuesday 12 June

Mrs. Fildes 4 - 7. Lin had a day off. Met him at 11 o’c at Gallerie Rodin.

Balzac! Studies for L’enfer etc. Lin used tram for first time to Ex. Saw

Spanish German & English Pavilion. Langret, Watteau, Pater paintings

exquisite. English Pavilion disappointing. Spanish tapestries v. fine &

armour. Boabdil’s surtout & sword. Swiss village disap. Dined Col.

Jeckyll’s, 12, arrived ¾ hr too early. Sat next to Col. J. & Mr. Purdon

Clarke architect, Lady G(?) Mr. & Mrs. Horner & (illeg) came in later.

Wednesday 13 June

Cooler. Wet. Pouring again. Reception at English Pavilion. I went thro

Ex. alone, saw Pasteur bottles! Belgian Pavilion beautiful large building

fine old tapestries. 2 huge carved chests with panels painted. Had 2

cups of chocolate & petit pain. To meet Lin at Petit Palais 4 o’c. Rained.

Missed him. Went to Mr. Jeckyll’s recep. & to Hotel Continental. Waited 2

hours for Lin quite exhausted. Arived at 8. Dined together. Mr. Davis &

Mr. Spielman sat with us after. Mr. Stapleton, Steadman etc at Mr. J’s.

Thursday 14 June

Lady Richmond 4 - 7. Lin & self together all day. To Madeleine in om.

Saw wedding procession. Lin v. angry man punched young girl!

Lunched at Grand Hotel, met de la Rues, staying at Hotel de Londres,

Purdon Clarke, Mrs. Spielman. Walked to exhibition. Saw Japan section

wonderful! Norwegian, Sweden, Italian, American & German. 2 china

busts of women as fountains fr. W(illeg)!! Walked to Hotel, chocolate

1fr.80. Dined Continental. Walk with Gen. Hawkins & Mr. Davis. Cooler &

rain. Amours still at Hotel, he left early. Lin saw odd cycle accident.

Friday 15 June

Pay last instalment £32 to Messrs Hambro & Sons 4% City of Christiana

loan 1900. Miss Neaves at home 4 - 7. Lin no bath. Lin to Jury. Cool &

grey morg. Met him at Ledoyens by om. to blue entrance. Dear

luncheon, sole 4 fr! No one much at Ledoyens. To Ex. with Lin & thro’

pictures & statuary, endless. Heard band. Courton’s mode girl lovely.

Took om. to Louvre & walked to Continental, dined there. Introduced to

Mrs. Hawkins by Gen. H, the amorous Frenchman not there. Unable to

meet Mr. Spielman 2.30 at Petit Palais.

Saturday 16 June

Fearful accident with one of compressed air trains Passy. Lin no bath.

Lin & self to Exhibition, walked thro’ dress depart’ on round railway & to

Ledoyens to lunch. V. dear again for little. Met Mr. George, Yeames,

Spielman & Stapleton. Lin on to Jury after, I to Continental, wrote letters

& walked to Palais Royal, bought Maud buckle 12 frcs. Had chocolate,

took cab back. Met Lin, lost his gold badge & cannot find letter fr. Maud

for me!!! He on to dine at Elysée, President Loubet, I to Hotel, had

omelette & chocolate small shop. Home, packed.

Sunday 17 June

Left Paris 11.50. Saw our luggage safely station & walked about Paris!

Met de la Rues returning. Mrs Spielman travelled with us to London. Met

Henry Dickens, Enid engaged, also Mr. Payton, Mr. ? Mrs. Spielman’s

two children met her at Charing X. Heaps of letters here awaiting us.

Nouvelle pro tem ici. Sais son ouvrage mais ne regarde pas dans les

yeux en parlant.

Monday 18 June

Mrs Rawlinson 11 - 7. Paid last instalment on Christiana £32 to Hambro

& Sons, 70 Old Broad St. Also last instalment on 5 allotted shares in

Cent Arg. Rly £10 to London & Westminster Bank, Lothbury EC. Darling

Maud to luncheon looked tired, gave me sweet little pendant like her

own & lovely flowers. Called at 4 o’c on Mrs. P. Holland, saw Ethel there.

To Georgie Rooke saw Cap R & little girl. Cards to Cameron Corbett,

Johnson Ferguson, Maud’s & Midge’s. Dora, Maud & Lennie dining with

Miss R. Innes & theatre after.

Tuesday 19 June

Mrs. Fildes 4 - 7. Darling Maud & Tilda to luncheon. Maud to tea & Len &

4 to call Lady Sadler, Mrs. Blair, Mrs. Shannon, Miss Hosier, Mrs.

Thorneycroft, v. pretty girls & good singing, & Mrs. Kendal & Mrs.

Messel. Beastly day heavy showers hot & cold. Lin v. busy photoing.

Thursday 21 June

Lady Richmond 4 - 7. Mrs. Harvey 5 - 6.30. At 3.30 to Mrs. Evans with

Maud, Mrs. Harvey’s, Lady Watson out. Mrs. Bainbridges party, v. pretty

women there, Mr. B. v. to the front & Mrs. Bainbridge sweetly pretty & v.

delicate fair. Jessie like D. but jerky modern manners. Pouring wet day.

Lennie & Maud dined here, only Emma & Mackay. Ellen pro tem left, here

a fortnight c’d have done without her. Met Max O’Reily(?) & Sir W.

Gatacre.

Friday 22 June

Miss Walter Crane’s wedding eve! 10 o’c. Lunch 1.15 Mrs. Spielman &

tea 5 o’c at Mrs. Thorneycroft’s 48 Portland Place. No, last Wed! Miss

Rose Innes tea, unable to go. Walked Whiteleys & chose fowl & to Mrs.

Spielman, 6 to luncheon. Fritters of whiting, Brisket of beef, cold lamb

cutlets in aspic, peas, new potatoes, junket & cherries. Saw Maud off

after to Vic. Called on Mrs. F. Lucas, Tupper, Milman, Cyril Maude,

Redfern & Young about dress. Thunder. Letters fr. Edgar.

Saturday 23 June

Mrs. Riviere 4 - 7. Out morg. Woollands, Barkers etc. Lin busy all day.

Wire for Roy to go week’s cruise “Joyeuse” Tabby on Monday, can’t go,

3 legal dinners. At 3.30 to Ranelagh with Midge, Ham & Dora on coach.

Met de la Rues, Tates, Chapman, Carlisle, Messels, Hemming, Hastings

etc etc. V. fine day brilliant assemblage. Saw Sp. & Ada. Emilie called. To

Empire with Lin evg. V. v. good performance. Ld. Roberts crossing

Vet(?) river, wonderful enjoyed both muchly.

Gate driving to dinner, 3 fire engines soon put it out. Bad news fr. S.

bride Mrs Avery(?) only relief to a dull, bad, dinner. Company

Feel vy. seedy & most anxious about Edgar. Terrible accounts of

Miss Stancombe Wills marriage 2.15. Violent gastric attack, to bed &

Orton. Had to put off tomorrow’s dinner. Midge called. I had long letter

fr. Edgar 8 pages dated 9th June. Sanguine about speedy termination of

war. Telegram later fr. War Office saying Edgar severely wounded left

ankle 10th July at Nitral’s Nek. Letter fr. Marion Pollock. Sophy sailed in

Union steam ship “Scott”. V. feverish all day. V. hot.

clean. Not a soul there! But the matron & her daughter to help

In all morg. working, fearful indigestion afternoon. Letter fr. Maud, Roy &

Doctor Bisley Thorne. Only walked round garden with Rosalind. Lady

Margaret & Lady Frances drove, self afraid on account of cold.

Queeny(?) arrived yesterday. Gentlemen to Brora for day, Lin bathed

there! Lovely day sat out entire day. Breakfasted in bed. Mrs. Richards

down for first time. Pauvre dame a l’air bien triste et malheureuse. No

games evg. all too tired.

Saturday 15 September

Sat out all day, read & worked. Letters fr. Maud & Midge. Jacobi evg.

Lovely warm day. Mr. Watney at home all day, gentlemen fishing &

shooting. Mrs. Richards down to dinner.

Sunday 16 September

Lovely day. Sat out all day. Down to 9.30 breakfast. Read Ld. Roberts’

proclomation on annexation of the Transvaal. Also triumphal march

thro’ the sacred city Peking of allied troops. Read de Quincey’s essay on

“Kant” also 3 Dreams by Olive Schreiner.

Monday 17 September

Lovely day. Sat out all day, read.

Tuesday 18 September

School treat. Wet morg, fine afternoon & lovely evg. Over 200 children

came & about 60 grown people uninvited. Greatly enjoyed it. Match

game evg. To bed early. Mr. Walsh left very early.

Wednesday 19 September

Lovely morning. Sat in with Lady Frances working. Mr. & Lady Margaret

out & Mrs. Richards alone. After luncheon were all going out & Mr.

Mallott called. Mrs. R. & self to garden. Lin with shooters all day, Mr.

Left Tressady at 11 o’c with Mr. & Mrs. Richardson who travelled with us

as far as Kingussie, dined at Perth sent off Mr. Richards stray bag & left

Perth at 10.30 v. late. Slept well. Saw Lord Portsmouth at Perth station.

Exquisite sunset as we passed through Killiekrankie lasting until late.

Friday 21 September

Arrived home 10.5, train late. Saw Sir William Dolby at Euston also

returned fr. north, his 3rd visit this year. Unpacked & repacked for

Maud’s. Lovely day, warm & sunny.

Saturday 22 September

Left by 2 train for Maud’s. Train v. late. Found Mr. & Mrs. Messel & Ottie

at Glovers, & Evelyn Coward, much stouter. Lovely day. Mistake about

carriage fetching Lennie. Lin came by later train & cycled from Reigate,

only just in time for dinner.

To church with Maud, Lennie & Evelyn to see cottage after.

Lin left early cycled to Reigate.

Great display presents & cake. Darling Maud gave me 2 silver frames

with 2 of baby & 1 of herself. Broach fr. Lennie & Maud. 1 doz lace

hand’s Maud & chain Eve, 6 doyleys. Nana bouquet roses. Lin who came

for dinner cycled down fr. Reigate gave me diamonds for hair. Mr. & Mrs.

Hohler & Mr. Heron for dinner.

Sunday 30 September

To church morg. with Lennie, Maud & Evelyn. Mr. Falk common young

man to luncheon, play tennis & dinner, slept night. Singing evening.

Lin returned fr. Glovers by cycle to Reigate & train Vic. Lovely day. I

To Miss D’s. To Swiss home afternoon, no, morning. Walked to see

Emma Smith pm at Holland Villas Rd & called & had chat with Mrs.

Fildes on way home. All her children away, 2 eldest College & rest

school. Mr. & Mrs. F. leave for Paris & Venice Monday next, remain away

6 weeks.

Lovely day out morg. Drove at 4 to see Ethel & Mervyn, Norfolk Hotel.

Both v. well. Stayed some time. On to Edgar, 4 Princes St. Saw Sophy &

E. Stayed some time. Lin hard at work & v. tired & cut his finger with

electric fan.

Lovely morg. Sat in K. gardens much amused with people, hope they

were as much with me. Lin busy photoing all day! Mervyn & Ethel & Mr.

Galbraith called.

Monday 8 October

Lin & self dine 8 o’c with Ethel & Mervyn at Dieu Donné. Little Bixley

coming for week. Unable to come. Met Mr. & Mrs. Buckland & Mrs.

Westmacot. Very pretty women both, latter cousin of Ethel’s. Glare in

dining room but not bad dinner.

Tuesday 9 October

Ethel & Mervyn dined with us & little Bixley came to help Mackay. Miss

Muir Mackenzie, Grace Fraser & Mrs. Spofforth came afternoon. To

Mrs. Clark here for day. Tilda coming, v. awkward with Roy home. Goes

Mrs. Clark, char, here today. Tilda & self to German place Baker St, & to

Mrs. Mason’s. Darling M. came just after lunch. I drove her to Barker’s &

Woollands & to Vic Sta. Hylda Messel met us & went to Glovers with

Maud. Quiet evg. Roy v. amusing during & after dinner. Lin very busy all

Dear Roy to Glovers 2 o’c. Lin hard at work all day. Mrs. Clark, char, here

all day. Tilda & self to Daly’s to see “San Toy”. V. good. Had large box

opposite Mr. & Mrs. Willard. Young a’Beckett acquitted honorably. Quiet

Walk with Tilda. Strange gusty cold day with heavy showers. Lin left at 2

o’c for Mr. Lawrence’s place, Norfolk, for one days shoot. Lin went in

dog cart to Sta. Mackay out. Tilda & self cold supper Emma as Mackay

out. Fanny Barker & Mary called.

Tilda & self 1.30 Garlants Hotel to lunch with Fanny Barker. Pouring rain.

After lunch went on to see Mrs. Grey about Frieda Mossler, engaged to

take her fr. Monday fortnight, £18 a year. To tea at Mrs. Welby’s found

her looking v. well & Baby v. wee. Saw Col. Welby before leaving. Roy

returned fr. Glovers. X. Minnie Kelly housemaid came.

Walked to Maud’s morg. Busy packing. Brought her back to lunch here.

She left in brougham at 2.30. Busy shops. Tilda & self at 3 o’c to call on

Aunt Linda, out, Midge away & Agnews, Parishes etc. Read Lin evg.

Lovely day. X. Ami in bed to breakfast. Up 12.30. In all day. Read Selon’s

book on S. Africa to Lin. Lin to see Maud morg, leaves with Lennie &

after. Home late, locked out.

Tilda to Mrs. Mason’s for me. V. annoyed about K.T. Roy fund of news fr.

last night & v. amusing. Invitation for Lin to shoot at Mr. Steinkopffs fr.

Friday till Monday. X. Saw Maria job parlourmaid 12/6 a week for

fortnight & 1/- fare.

Wednesday 24 October

Very vexed evening everything cold, no potatoes even done, only

sardines, cold chicken, one cold sweet. E. & Minnie out although

Mackay says not! She made an awful fuss over waiting & great noise.

Saw Frida.

Face ache. Went at 2.30 in brougham fetched Baby & Nurse F. & called

on Gwyn & Evey. Only saw Evey & Miss Drew. To Nembhards, out, &

home. Baby v. sweet & good. Felt v. seedy evg. X. Maria pro tem came

for fortnight. Mackay left.

Lady Armstrong 4 - 6. In bed all day, face v. swollen & painful & feverish.

Roy & Tilda to see “Julius Caesar”. Lin dined alone. Feel awfully bad.

Otley met Lin at Victoria Sta. & took him to Athenaeum Club. In bed to

luncheon, still v. seedy & head bad. Darling Nonie called & left flowers.

Tuesday 30 October

V. seedy in bed till 12.30. Mrs. Coward & Eve called. Roy getting very

tiresome again. Gave him £6.10.0 but no better. Wish boys were as little

worry as girls or Roy as manageable as darling Maud was.

Wednesday 31 October

Tilda & self to dentist, tooth probed 10/- Felt little better after tho’ v.

weak. Tilda out to luncheon. Roy & Lin to Nymans, 4 train. Mrs. & Marie

Vaughan Morgan & Mrs. Godefroi called. Marie going to India tomorrow.

Darling Baby here with Nurse Francis to lunch & tea. Tilda out to lunch.

Linley returning from Nymans shoot. Felt too seedy to go out. Very

Much colder. Nonie came whilst we were at breakfast. Maud & Evelyn

Walked to Stanhope Gate, met darling M. & Roy & Mr. Trower. Len, M,

Roy, Capt Meiklejohn & Hylda to lunch “Princes”. Maud & Lennie dine

Wednesday 28 November

Pouring wet morg. Roy to City, & dines with Maud 7 o’c. Going to “San

Toy” with them. Called & saw Con in bed at Midge’s, & on to darling M,

saw her & Baby, not v. well with his teeth but v. sweet & pretty. Dined

alone. Personne sortie entre les filles.

Thursday 29 November

Mrs Macmillan 22 Devonshire Place 4 - 7. Lin v. woried, work all altered.

Con & Dora come to our box at Savoy, “Patience”, Lin, Roy & self. Maud

& Lennie dining out. In all day, cleaned silver morning. Darling Maud

came & brought me flowers (lilies) looking so pretty in her blue &

moleskins.

Friday 30 November

Called & saw Maud & Baby. Dined at 9.30.

Saturday 1 December

Mrs. Heron Allen 4 - 7. Mr. & Mrs. Galbraith to dine with us, Mr. & Mrs.

Rooth & Maud & Lennie. Roy dined Midge’s. Mrs. Lovern here morg 1/6

for drawing room. Mrs. Frampton to help Emma 2/6. Morris to wait 7/6. V.

tired shop. & doing flowers. Pleasant dinner.

Sunday 2 December

Packed morg. Rested afternoon. Quiet dinner alone Lin Roy & self.

Lin & self to Mrs. Johnson Ferguson’s. Great crowd at Carlisle going

north. Started Staf. Ter. 9.30, reached Springkell 7.45. House party, Lady

Roxburgh, Mr. & Mrs. Ainsworth Mr. & Mrs. Willis, Mr. Mitchell, Mr. &

Mrs. Steel, young J.F. & one other, 12. Another bedroom, prefer it to last

huge one.

Tuesday 4 December

Out morning. Gentlemen good days sport.

Wednesday 5 December

In all morg. Out afternoon. Frantic games! Lin left by 10 train for town,

Punch dinner. To dinner, returned Springkell. Abominable Burnand not

stops him going neither Sir John Tenniel nor Burnand there.

Thursday 6 December

Lin arrived at 7.30 v. tired. Feel enraged Burnand did not wire him.

Shameful. Lin out shooting all day. Left for London again after dinner.

Friday 7 December

Left by 10 o’c train. Young J-Ferguson with me to Carlisle. Talked away

brilliantly, much nicer away from his people. Had a hurried luncheon at

Station. Visited Little’s shop & great scramble for place. 3 other ladies

all going, 2 Australian girls who interested me, 2 spitz dogs. Found Lin

less tired than I expected.

Saturday 8 December

Miss Chapman 4 - 7. To stores morg for bacon, cheese, brawn. Fruit

Barkers. Called Maud, looking v. well. Quiet evening alone with Lin

seems well & in good spirits but fear he must be v. tired.

Sunday 9 December

In all morg. Lin & self alone to luncheon. Mr. Galbraith called. Lennie,

Maud and Roy, Owen Seaman & Mr. Johnson to dinner. Lin hard at work

all day.

Pay Messrs Messel £284.3.6 for 25 Waihi Gold, pd. shares 11¼ fee &

stamp. To stores & bought little cow. Baby better, saw Ottie & Miss Elkin

there uncouth. Mr. Robertson to luncheon. Daisie to Hippodrome evg.

with her brother. Lin, Roy & self alone.

To stores morg. Daisy & self in om. to Regent Circus, walked down

Regent St. Bought centrepiece 3/6. To Buzzard. Gillie here to luncheon.

At 3.30 to stores for bacon 4/6. Left cards Mrs. Lucy. To Effie Weigal,

saw her, Mrs. Galbraith, in & Mrs. B. Partridge, out. Quiet evg. Maud &

Lennie dined at Midge’s.

Mrs. Young Hunter, 5 Edwardes Sqre, 4 - 7. Out morg. shop’g. To see

“San Toy” big box with Daisie Robertson matinée. Dora & Midge called

Daisie to Maud’s, saw Baby, better, & Midge’s. Off again after luncheon

To French dressmaker & Bumpus about Maud’s prayer book & 2 books

“Lambs Essays” for Roy to give Maud. Roy dined out & home late after

training. Daisie, Lin & self dined alone. Quiet evg. & bed early. Emma

out.

Tuesday 18 December

In bed till 12.30. Con called saw me morg. Mrs. & Miss Phillips, Mrs.

Finlay, Evelyn Coward, Mrs. Partridge called. Daisie B. left morg. Roy to

dance with Clara Bergheim, dull affair. Lennie, Maud & Dora to dinner.

Maud & Lennie gave me lovely pendant & little pearl chain for Xmas.

Wednesday 19 December

Lovely day. Tea Lady Roxburgh, & be fitted French dressmakers. Lin &

Roy dine at Maud’s. I went to Lady Roxburgh, introduced to Mrs.

Clausten her sister, v. clever woman. Met Lady & Mr. Justice Day & Lady

Primrose. Had supper drawing room & to bed early.

Thursday 20 December

To Maud’s, out, stores, & Gorringes, out of the lampshades I want.

Darling Maud came late stayed ½ an hour, looks v. well. Brought Lin

Peerage. Lennie & M. gave me lovely little old pendant & chain of seed

pearls. Minnie out, bad tooth.

Friday 21 December

Lovely day. Up to breakfast, did flowers darling M. brought me

yesterday. Otley with Roy’s luggage in cart & Maud’s, all going to

Nymans today. I walked & did shops in Kensington. Lin hard at work.

Did up presents.

Saturday 22 December

Shop’g morg. Drove & saw Midge. Tabbie left yesterday. Sweets 1/-,

flowers 1/-. Lin worked all day.

Sunday 23 December

Mr. Blair & Fritz called, stayed long while. Mr. Blair’s brother was at

college with Fritz who mistook him for his brother! Good talk like old

times. Fritz says he is well, looks seedy. Lin hard at work.

Monday 24 December

Shopped in Kensington morning. Dirty muddy day. Lin & self to dress

rehearsal of pantomime. V. funny & amusing, enjoyed it. Sat next to Mr.

Knight.

Tuesday 25 December

In all day. Sweet letter from my darling Maud. Lovely lace veil from little

Nonie by post & card! Mervyn & Ethel to luncheon off Lennie’s fine

turkey a perfect beauty. Pleasant little evg. Midge’s, only Mervyns there

besides ourselves.

Wednesday 26 December

Lovely day. In entire day busy sorting. Lin hard at work. No one called.

Frieda out afternoon & evg. Dined 8.30.

Thursday 27 December

Lovely day, warm, no, rained. In all morning. At 3 o’c to Whiteleys,

changed books Mudie’s, left cards Mr. Peter Reid & Mr. Bret Harte. Roy

returned, is remaining 2 nights. Lin v. hard at work all day v. late dinner

8.30. Lin’s fire won’t burn.

Friday 28 December

X. Wet & gale, blew lead off front window. Fire choked up dust in Lin’s

room. Paid to Glyn Mills Currie £60 for my 6 allotted £10 pref 5% shrs

B.A. Gt. Southern Rly at £12 a share issued.
