From the Principal

Dear Families,

Happy October! I cannot believe that September is already at a close and we are embarking upon October! The year is already clicking right along, and the children have the groove of our school day down. It has been exciting to see them settle into the school year and become part of our owl family again. We love our 96 kindergartners who enter each day and bring such enthusiasm and ENERGY into our building! It is also wonderful to see our older students really showing their maturity, wisdom and O’Dea Core Knowledge pride throughout the school day.

Our fifth grade ECO week adventure in the mountains was rescheduled due to the fires up in Red Feather. We were grateful to be able to work so closely with the CSU Mountain Campus to have our trip rescheduled for the first week in October. Our students were disappointed to not depart as planned yet are learning firsthand the impact that fires can have on our entire community. We are looking forward to our time in the mountains with them living…learning…loving nature and creating some amazing memories that will last forever.

From the Principal, continued…

We have been busy with our MAPS computerized assessments in reading and math for our second through fifth graders and are looking forward to sharing those results with you during our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences in October. These assessments show us where the children are performing in accordance to our state standards and help us target our instruction to meet their specific needs. At O’Dea we do expect 100% of parent attendance at conferences. It is simply such an important time to spend together. We are using an online conference scheduler this year…hopefully this will make it easier for families to pick their time slots!

Our Feather Flurry Fun Run fundraiser will be launching on September 30th and running the first two weeks in October. You will be receiving information packets in your child’s backpack that will explain what our Fun Run is…and how to support O’Dea. We have added the ability to create an online donation page this year that should assist families in reaching out to an extended community. This will be our primary fundraiser each year and helps us run many important and valuable schoolwide activities and provides materials for our students. We are very thankful for your support!

I hope that you enjoy this wonderful fall season with your families and friends. It is one of my favorite seasons of the year as we say hello to cooler temperatures. Thank you for your continued support of our school…we simply could not do it…without you.

Thinking of leaves falling, shorter days and hoping for a snowy winter,

Laurie

Dear Parents,

We are launching a new marker recycling program at O’Dea called Crayola ColorCycle. The ColorCycle program has repurposed more than 70 tons of expended markers in the United States and Canada since 2013, and uses the most advanced plastic conversion technologies available today to make wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles as well as to generate electricity that can be used to heat homes, cook food, and power vehicles. You can learn more about this program at http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle

Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house- even non-Crayola brands! Highlighters and dry erase markers can also be included! Markers can be dropped off in the Art room where Ms. King is working on setting up a permanent container for depositing the markers.

Thank you in advance for participating! And remember, don’t throw out that used marker—ColorCycle it!

Sincerely,

Your O’Dea PTA

Physical Education

We will be having our first Rollerland party of the school year on Tuesday, October 22nd. This is optional, but its always a fun time of skating around and playing games just for students and families from O’Dea. During pe, we will

hopefully continue going outside. We have kicking/punting skills coming up. Building off of those skills will be our soccer unit and kickball unit. To mix things up a little, will also do some broomball. If the weather gets a bit chilly,

our first big unit in the gym will be volleyball.

Looking for Landscape Designer

The PTA is researching nature grant opportunities for O'Dea. We are looking for an O'Dea parent that might be a landscape designer. If you know of someone or are a landscape designer, please contact Megan Haynes, [email protected].

We are always collecting Box Tops!

Clip them…cut them…send them to school!

Thank you!
