As cliché as it is to say, no production is the work of one person. Theater is truly a collaborative sport in which every team member plays a crucial role in creating art that exists only for a moment.

With budget cuts and the schools scrambling for fiscal survival, it is a humbling pleasure to work with so many education professionals who put forth a Herculean effort, bringing their specific skills to ensure that the musical is a success. If you think art is important to have in the high school, then I invite you to join me in thanking the following people: Mr. Benjamin Knapp, musical director, Ms. Lindsay Palinsky, choreographer, Mr. David Larzelere, pit orchestra director, Ms. Rita Deibler, tech director and producer, Ms. Jenna Erbele, promotions director, Mr. Michael Ruben, production assistant, and Mr. Eldon McGraw, theater club advisor.

Creating a musical is a time-consuming process that puts great demands on all involved. Applause goes out to those student risk-takers who, through performance, are learning skills that will accompany them throughout their lifetime. Recognition goes out to those who rehearsed this classic music in the pit orchestra, who picked up tools behind the scene in the Technological Society, and to those actors who take the stage to bring this iconic musical to life through singing, dancing, and acting. Likewise, in a high school production, parents can make or break a show. We are fortunate to have many parent volunteers who smooth the way to making a production like this happen. To those supportive parents of the more than 70 students involved, I say a special thank you.

On a personal note, a special thank you to my family for enduring the long hours in which their husband and father was absent.

All of these people are doing more than simply putting on a high school musical. They are helping to make their future and the future of our community a better one through their participation in the arts. A Stanford study revealed that high school students who have been in a single play are 42 percent less likely to support racist behavior than those who have not. Theater changes them.

In a “Champions of Change” study conducted by the Arts Education Partnership and the President’s Committee on Art and the Humanities, researchers insist that arts are essential to educational success. They learned:

* Learners can attain higher levels of achievement through their engagement with the arts.

* The arts can help level the playing field for students from disadvantaged circumstances.

* Students with high levels of arts participation outperform arts-poor students by virtually every measure.

* Sustained involvement with music and theater are highly correlated with success in mathematics and reading.

* Of students participating in after-school programs in three categories—sports/academic, community involvement, and the arts—the youth in the arts programs were doing the best even though those students were at greater risk than those in other programs. Researchers believe it is the combination of “roles, risks, and rules” offered by the arts programs that make a difference.

How is it that the arts do this? In part because learning in other disciplines may focus on a single skill or talent, whereas the arts engage multidisciplinary skills. Participating in the arts helps students develop cognitive, social, and personal competencies.

The “Champions of Change” research concluded that:

§ The arts reach students who are not otherwise being reached.

§ The arts reach students in ways that they are not otherwise being reached.

§ The arts connect students to themselves and each other.

§ The arts transform the environment for learning.

§ The arts provide learning opportunities for the adults in the lives of young people.

§ The arts provide new challenges for those students already considered successful.

§ The arts connect learning experiences to the world of real work.

The arts cannot be optional if we care about student achievement, success, and fulfillment.

Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most beloved musicals of all time and I am thrilled to be bringing it to Waverly’s audiences. The students you are about to see both on stage and off have been hard at work for the past nine weeks. Without them, none of this would have happened and I can’t thank them enough.

The magic of theatre is something that attracted me at an early age when I saw Beauty and the Beast at The Wharton Center, and from then on I was hooked for life. That is my favorite thing about working in this field, the affect it has on audiences and the impact it will leave on you. Which is why now, more than ever, we need to continue to support the arts in schools. I can’t imagine what I would be doing with my life today if I had not had this experience in high school. Kurt Vonnegut had it right when he said, ‘The point of practicing art is not to make a living, but to make your soul grow.’

Theatre looks easy and comes naturally when done right, so please indulge me, dear reader, for I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to thank those special people who share my passions and made this production happen. The High School’s own Amy Ranke and Micheal Ruben, you guys are awesome. Rob, you really are ‘the man’. Wendy, mom, you’re the best. Jenna, if anyone deserves a round of applause its you. Ben, Richard, Lindsay and Dave you work the hardest to make this production look and sound as fantastic as it does- thank you for everything you have done. And, of course, thank you to the parents of our cast, crew and pit, for without you this production would not have been possible.

Thank you so much for attending todays performance and supporting the arts here at Waverly, I hope you enjoy this timeless classic.

Rita E Deibler- Producer and Technical Director

In the past six months, a lot has happened in the Waverly Theatre Department. A Theatre Club was developed as an umbrella for the Drama Club (a new club) and the Production Crew Club (formerly known as the Technological Society). Many upgrades were made in the Waverly High School Auditorium including lighting and the mural located at the entrance. A special thanks to Waverly Alum, Jameson Mcquaid, for his mural design and the painting of the mural. He spent more than 70 hours donating his time and artistic talents on the mural.

The Theatre Club is also proud to announce two upcoming productions. A play will be produced in the spring of 2010 at Waverly High School. This production will be funded by the Theatre Club. The Theatre Club is very excited to announce a play to be produced at Waverly Middle School this winter. It has been many years since there has been a play or musical produced at Waverly Middle School. Richard Redman, the Acting Director of Fiddler on the Roof, will also direct this year’s middle school and high school plays.

The Theatre Club would like to thank the Waverly Education Foundation and local citizens for the generous donations towards the production costs of the Waverly Middle School play.
