PASTOR’S PIECE

A NOTE FROM PASTOR JAMES

Construction Ahead! If you have spent much time around the church lately you will certainly know that we have been

“Under Construction” or “Under Renova-tion” for a while now. Things are moving along nicely and hopefully the majority of the current projects will be complete by Christmas. Thanks to everyone that has helped so far, and to those of you who haven’t helped (but might be able to), what are you waiting for? There are plenty of jobs to go around – for all skill levels. As we enter the Advent season, we are also thinking about some renovations of sorts – preparations for our Lord’s coming again. There are things to be spruced up, decorations to hang, carols to sing and food to cook. Of course, there are also some personal preparations to make. Are you prepared to welcome the Christ child? Are you living in a way the Lord would consider pleasing? Is your heart open to the calling of the Christ child? If yes, that’s great. If it is more of a maybe, then maybe some renovations are needed. If no, then maybe it is time for some changes, be they more recent or long overdue. Blessings as you prepare your home and your heart the Advent season. May you be blessed and a blessing to others in their journey as well. Pastor James

Isaiah 40:3- 5 A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a high-way for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall be-come level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be re-vealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

COUNCIL NOTES

A MESSAGE FROM HO-SANNA'S CHURCH COUNCIL

Advent is here! Christmas and year end are right around the corner. This is the last opportunity for this calendar year to share the news of Hosanna's financial status. To the end of Octo-ber, our expenses for 2016 outpaced our income by

$16,353.92. Around the middle of November how-ever, we have finally re-ceived the grant payment of the summer student, so our deficit is actually closer to $12,400. This is approxi-mately a $7,525 positive change in our financial po-sition in comparison to the end of September when we were in a deficit position of $19,882 on the year to date. This change was not only the result of the grant payment, but also due to a surplus of $3,525 of income over expenses for the month of October. This is a

huge boost. We are doing much better, but we need your continued help to overcome the remaining deficit on the year. Finish-ing the year in a strong fi-nancial position helps us achieve our ministry goals and provides a healthy start for next year. Council wishes to thank you for your generosity in helping sustain Hosanna's ministry in west-end Edmonton.

Note... all donations must be in Hosanna's office or post marked by end of day December 31 to be included in the 2016 tax year.

CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT

Renovations of Capital Development

The renovations to the church continue on sched-ule and on budget.

We saw painting continue in the Peace Hall and we

began to replace the old flu-orescent fixtures in the Peace Hall with the new LED lights. Also the lights in the Sanctuary were re-placed.

The windows in the offices and the Con-ference Room have been replaced.

On December 5th work is scheduled to begin to replace the old flooring with the new carpets and vinyl planking.

WORSHIP AND MUSIC

A NOTE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

Hand Bells

If you would like to join the hand bells for Christmas eve please join us starting Thurs-

day Dec 1 between 6:45 and 7:25pm (which is then followed by choir rehearsal of you'd like to join that too). As long as you can read music to follow a score you can join! Thanks for considering.

Flute Choir

It would be great to do a fun song for family Christmas (Dec 11) and also a song we could use for Christmas Eve. Please let me know if you are available for

those two events and we will schedule re-hearsals around availability of performers. Thanks!

Choir

Thank you choir members for the extra investment of time to sing in both services for many festival Sundays. I appreciate your musical talents and ser-

vice. We are of course super busy with ad-vent and Christmas Eve.

I wanted to remind you of the following:

a) choir w ill have Sunday Dec 25 off from singing duty as many of you will be doing all 3 Christmas Eve services.

b) our first rehearsal back in 2017 will be Thursday January 12th. Enjoy a few well deserved weeks off!

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND FAMILY MINISTRIES

During the season of Advent the Bible readings focus on the theme, “The Hope of the Messiah”. On the third Sunday of Advent, the Sunday School, Youth and Choir will present “The Promise”, the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies with the birth of Christ Jesus. This story is told within the framework of our worship service, including communion at our

special Advent Worship on Sunday, December 11th at 10:00. (There will be no 9:00 or 11:00 worship that day.)

IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES:

Prayer Partner and Advent Activity Day

Sunday, November 29, 10:00 – Noon

We’ve invited the Prayer Partners to join us for this special day to mark the beginning of the Advent season. Together we’ll do a craft and enjoy a snack. Then the children will rehearse for the Christmas program. Donations of mitts for our mitten tree are

appreciated.

Rehearsal – Sunday, December 4, 10:00 – 11:00 am

Don’t miss this rehearsal for the Advent/Christmas Program during regular Education time.

Advent/Christmas Program Dress Rehearsal

Friday, December 9, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Please make every effort to attend this important final rehearsal of the Advent/Christmas program. We need everyone there so that our program will run smoothly! Following the program, Sunday School will take a Christmas break, resuming classes on January 8th.

Epiphany Party – Friday, January 6, 5:30 – 9:00

Mark your calendars for the return of the Hosanna Epiphany Party on Friday, Janu-ary 6th, 2016, in the Peace Hall. A “Faith and Fun” event for the whole family (meaning your Hosanna family!) with food, fun and fellowship followed by a short worship time to end the evening. In the spirit of sharing the light of Christ with oth-ers, we encourage everyone to invite a friend or family to join in the fun!

Prayer Partners

It’s so nice to hear how much pleasure both the adults and children are getting from their cross+generational relation-ships! Besides praying for your partner (and their family) over the Advent/Christmas season , it might be nice to also remember them with a card, a candy cane, or a small homemade gift to show them that you are thinking of them.

Adult Forum

Dec 4th: Christmas memory and merry making. This session will be a sharing of ideas to allow us all to

learn something new and maybe start a new 'to be cherished' Christmas tradition. Join us Sunday December 4th between 10:10(ish) and 10:55.

Mark your calendars for the start up of adult forums again on Sunday January 15

Thursday Morning Bible Study

This study continues on Thursday morn-ings at 10:00 am. After the study (and lunch!) on December 8th, the group will take a Christmas recess, resuming on Jan-uary 12th. If you have not been part of this group this year, consider checking it out in the New Year – there’s great discus-sion, a lot of laughter and no homework! Samples of the study we are using are available above the black counter.

Women’s Bible Study

Women’s Bible Study will meet for a Christmas get together on Friday, Decem-ber 9th at 7:30 at Belm ead Com m u-nity Hall (9102 – 182 Street), hosted by Dana. Bring some Christmas goodies to share for our time of fellowship - all wom-en are welcome even if you haven’t been able to join us before!

Advent Devotions and Christmas Reading

Advent is a time of waiting and prepara-tion but it’s also a busy time. Family and/or individual devotional time is a great way to slow down and to reflect on God’s Word and its meaning in our lives. Here are some suggestions for you:

Sunday School a nd Pra y er Pa rt-ners made Advent paper chains – each day during December a link is removed and the suggested scrip-ture verse read to help count down the days until Christmas

Devotional materials Christ in our Home and Eternity Today are available on the Black Counter

Other devotional books a nd sea -sonal booklets are available in a basket in the Social Room library for you to borrow. Please feel free to take/borrow these resources to help enrich your Advent.

What's a COMMUNITY MEAL? Hosanna's Community Meal program cur-rently provides a hot meal five times a year, at no charge and is open to anyone who might benefit from a nutritious meal. Along with the meal, we offer toiletries and winter accessories (mitts, hats, gloves), and give out door prizes - these items are generously donated by members of the congregation.

There is a committee that oversees this ministry.... but it is thanks to all the other VOLUNTEERS that the meals really hap-pen! Some come to chop and peel, prepare and cook the food. Others set up the north Peace Hall, make coffee and juice to be ready for the guests. Still others serve the meal, pour the coffee and finally clean up after all have left. It is a ministry of many hands, and has been going on for more than ten years.

The next meal will be on Saturday, January 21, 2017. There will be a sign up sheet available for volunteers to indicate where they can serve. Preparation starts on Friday evening, with final cooking, serving and clean up on Saturday. The meal is served from 12 to 1.

Along with volunteers, these are some of the items needed for the "give-away store." Please leave any donations in the bins in the mailbox area. warm mittens and hats - for men,

women and children toothbrushes and small toothpaste

(kids and adults) door prize items, especially for chil-

dren and men some ideas for men: decks of cards,

crib board, a box of nice cookies, salty snacks like a can of nuts, pretzels, shaving cream, razors, full size other toiletries like Axe body wash, lip balm, etc.

some ideas for kids: crafts, coloring books, stickers, Matchbox cars, Nerf balls, little dolls, "healthy" fun snacks like fish crackers, fruit gummies, lip balm, etc.

THANK YOU everyone who made the November meal turn out so well. There was a full house - with about 110 guests, plus another 15 volunteers, who enjoyed the meat loaf, mashed potatoes and chocolate cake with whipped cream! Watch for the sign up sheet in the weeks prior to January 21 and plan to be part of the next COMMUNITY MEAL.

With the arrival of Deka and Abdi Abdulle and family, we can report that Deka’s brother Khalif has been very busy helping them settle in—getting all the ID cards and the health cards, getting the younger children registered in schools, helping Abdi find work as a cleaner. In one month, Khalif has done so much to help them land on their feet.

In time for their arrival, Khalif had found a three-bedroom apartment at 106 Ave-nue and 105 Street. To ease the space there, the eldest two girls, Kaltun and Sa-fi, are staying with their aunt (Deka and Khalif’s sister) who lives a few blocks from the apartment. While the hunt is on for a house in the neighbourhood, if one can’t be found they may stay in the apart-ment since the two girls can stay so near by, schools are close at hand, and public transportation is readily available.

The three youngest girls—Iqra, Anisa, and Seyruq—attend McDougall School; their next-in-age brothers attend Victoria and Centre High, another is registered at Nor-Quest. The rest, including Deka and Abdi, will soon have language assessments in order to find their places in language in-struction classes. Khalif reports that the backpacks that the Refugee Support

Group gave to each child on behalf of Ho-sanna are much appreciated and have al-ready been well used.

With 1 January 2017, we now look to one more family member: Khalif and Deka’s mother Saruro, who remains in Nairobi. Hosanna Council approved the support group’s recommendation that we sponsor Saruro in order to have her join her fami-ly here. Applications for family reunifica-tion through the government and through CLWR are in process and will be submit-ted in the new year. Our experience with Khalif assures us that Saruro will be well taken care of when she finally arrives.

The Gift of Education – A Gift That Keeps on Giving

Some of our recent scholarship recipients at Divine Redeemer

For almost 20 of the 26 years that Hosanna has had a sister parish rela-

tionship with Divine Redeemer, San Miguel, El Salvador, we have offered

scholarships. More than 50 young people have benefited from this sup-

port. For university ($60) and high school students ($50), the scholar-

ships go toward tuition and books. Younger Salvadoran now have free ele-

mentary schooling but even the $20 each a month we offer them is im-

portant to the families in keeping their children in school rather working

in fields or selling in the street.

This Advent help by contributing to

Hosanna’ Gift of Education Campaign.

CARDS WILL BE PREPARED FOR DISTRIBUTION TO DONORS ON SUN-DAY, DECEMBER 18. IF YOU NEED THE CARD SOONER THAN THAT

DATE, PLEASE TELL THE EL SALVADOR SUPPORT COMMITTEE.

There are a variety of tasks, one or more of which could certainly fit anyone’s ability, both men and women. Each task takes about two

hours (e.g. preparation, serving, clean up), and the work is always so much easier when there are enough helpers to share the load. If there are any questions about this service or to volunteer, please contact the church office or speak to one of the current crew captains: Johanna Borle and Karen Moore.

FROM THE CHURCH OFFICE

HELP WANTED

The Communications Committee has discussed having a catch-all ‘Help-Wanted” sec-

tion of the newsletter, where various committees and groups could look to recruit vol-

unteers and ask for help. If this is something that you think would be helpful, having

all volunteer opportunities in one convenient place, please let the office know!
