T oday we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. Joshua gathers all the tribes of Israel together and asks them to make a decision. Who are they going to serve. They have a number of choices. They could serve the gods their ancestors served long ago, or they could serve the foreign gods they have gotten to know in the land they now occupy. Or they could serve the God who brought them out of Egypt. Jesus also asks his disciples in the gospel whom they are going to choose. Will they stick with him, or are they going to leave? Every day of our lives we are given the same choice. The disciples respond with a halfhearted, “Lord, to whom shall we go?”. But Joshua gives me one of my favorite lines in Scripture as he responds, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” We pray for the faith and courage of Joshua as we live our faith each day. This weekend we welcome Fr. James Nathan for our summer Mission appeal at St. Kieran. He is repre- senting his diocese in Sri Lanka. Please be as generous as you can in our second collection. Thanks to Joanne and Jim Rossbach for hosting a barbecue for the choirs and chimes this past weekend. The choirs are now beginning to practice for their up- coming start. If you are a singer, or instrumentalist we need your help to make our liturgies “rock”. Please consider this ministry and talk to Joanne. Religious Education Registration is now in its final days. Many classes are already full. If you need to regis- ter, please call Mrs. Klopp at 708-754-0713. If classes are full, we can recommend other RE programs to you. Next weekend we celebrate Labor Day and the parish offices will be closed on Monday September 3rd. This always was the official end to summer. For many though their children have been in school for a couple of weeks. Really it is a chance to relax and give thanks for the gift of work that God has given each of us. Work bestows dignity and we pray that all who seek employ- ment are able to find work. Enjoy the weekend. Two more things that help us extend summer is the Joe Dee Golf Classic sponsored by the St. Agnes Catholic School that will be held on Sunday September 9th. For many years Joe Dee would sponsor a golf outing for St. Agnes. He also was a big cheerleader for children and their accomplishments. After Joe’s death the school brought back the golf outing in his memory. It is a way to help the children he loved so much and to remember Joe Dee. Thanks to everyone on the commit- tee who work so hard to make it a success and to all who support it as sponsors, golfers, and through raffle donations. Sign up information is included in this bulletin. The second event is the St. Kieran parish picnic which will be held on Sunday September 16th. The picnic begins after the 10 AM mass and goes until 3 PM. Sheila Porrata is once again organizing the picnic with family and friends. She can always use more volunteers. Mid Life Crisis will be providing music for the picnic and there will once again be a petting zoo and train for the young or young at heart. Bill Barker is providing food, or as always you can bring your own. This is a great way to celebrate the end of summer. See you there. Finally, this week we celebrated Mary Bailey’s funeral at St. Kieran. Mary Bailey was Fr. Crawford’s sister and was a mainstay of St. Kieran. Mary was sacristan for longer than most can remember and affec- tionately St. Kieran was known as Mary’s Church. She was a good and faithful servant who now is reunited with family and friends. Please keep Mary in your prayers. St. Kieran Catholic Church Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 26, 2018 As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. — Joshua 24:15b Notes from Fr. Our Patron Saint: St. Kieran of Clonmacnoise

Biography Continued

After completing his studies under Finnian, Kieran left Clonard and moved to the monastery of Inishmore in the Aran Isles, which was directed by St. Enda. While a member of this monastic community, Kieran was blessed with the vision of a great tree, which anticipated his own foundation of a renowned monastery. From Inishmore, Kieran went to visit his religious brothers at Isel in central Ireland. His stay here was brief, as the other monks envied his fame as a scholar and resented what they considered his excessive charity to the poor. Asked to leave Isel, Kieran was led by a stag to Inis Aingin, or Hare Island. While he lived here for three years and three months, brothers from all over Ireland came to study under Kieran, and more miracles attested to his holiness.

Kieran departed Hare Island with eight monastic brothers and eventually settled at a location in the center of Ireland, on the east bank of the River Shannon. Here, in the year 544, he founded the great monastery of Clonmacnoise. Students by the thousands came to study there, not only from Ireland but also from England and France. Clonmacnoise became Ireland’s center of study, art, and literature. To this day, tourists and pilgrims visit the site of Kieran’s monastery to see some of the finest monastic ruins and high crosses in all of Ireland. A mere seven months after establishing Clonmacnoise, Kieran died, perhaps of the plague. Because of his prominence in the early Irish church, St. Kieran is known as one of the “Twelve Apostles of Ireland.” The Feast of St. Kieran is celebrated each year on September 9.

The Story of St. Kieran continues next week as we begin to look at some of the stories and legends attributed to our Patron Saint

Now is the Time

Is this the year that God is leading you to become a Catholic?

Is this the year that God is leading you to complete

the Sacraments of Holy Eucharist, Confirmation or making your Profession of Faith?

If you are an adult and have been Baptized in

the Catholic tradition but have not yet completed the sacraments of initiation (Holy Eucharist

and Confirmation), now is the Time.

If you were Baptized in a Christian tradition other than Catholic, and would like to find out if the Catholic Tradition is right for you, now is the Time.

If you have never been Baptized and

want to know if the Catholic faith is your path to Christ, now is the Time.

Do you know someone you could encourage

to become part of our community, now is the Time.

Now is the time to see what the RCIA program at St. Kieran and St. Agnes has to offer, Call the Parish house 708-755-0074, and we will get in touch to explain our program.

Parish News & Events

Father Edmund Aristil, pastor of St. Emeric in Country Club Hills, is reaching out to our communities to help St. Cecile, a parish in Haiti where his cousin Fr. Etienne is pastor. Fr. Etienne has been requested by his bishop to erect, furnish, and equip the new parish school from scratch. Parishioners from our neighboring parish of St. John in Glenwood will travel to Haiti in September to assist them and bring supplies.

They are requesting the following items: • Lightweight collapsible backpacks (no wheels) • #2 pencils • Small pencil sharpeners • Small erasers • Pocket folders

Haiti was devastated by an earthquake in 2010, and was still not rebuilt when it was struck by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which destroyed most of southern Haiti. The people of Haiti continue to need assistance of all types. If you can donate to help the school being built, please bring your donations to the church and I will get them to St. John Parish.

For more information please contact Barbara Dutko at 708-957-3742.

Thank you for your support!

St. Agnes has hosted a Shawl Ministry group for a number of years. They are a small group of knitters and crocheters who make baby afghans for families who are baptizing, shawls for the sick or home-bound and neck scarves for PADS guests. A lot of the work may be done at home, but they meet once a month for about an hour at St. Agnes, usually on the last Thursday of the month at 10 AM for a cup of coffee, company, and to pray while they work. If you’re interested in joining the group, please call Ann at 756-2635 or Kay in the parish office at St. Agnes at 709-2694. P.S. Plenty of supplies are available, so please think about coming to learn how to knit or just for the fellowship!
