T oday we end the Christmas Season with the Baptism of the Lord. Even though we still have our manger scenes up, the story of salvation now fast forwards to the Baptism of Jesus
in the Jordan River. Jesus’ cousin John has been calling people to a new way of life in the desert. He is calling for a baptism of repentance for the people’s sins. Though he is baptizing with water, he tells the people that one who is more powerful then John will come baptizing with fire and the Holy Spirit. Jesus then comes on the scene and tells John to baptize him to fulfill the scriptures. In many ways the baptism is similar to the Epiphany in that Jesus’ saving mission is told to the whole world. Today with this baptism, Jesus begins his public ministry as an adult. For all of us it is a reminder of our own baptism and commitment to be the light of Christ in our world. The world is in great need of that light right now. Let us all imagine God out to each of us, “This is my beloved son or daughter on who my favor rests’. Today at our 10:00 AM liturgy Sister Ida Green will be celebrating her 60th year of profession as a Franciscan Sister from Clinton Iowa. Sr. Ida has
been a member of the parish for many years. She is a reader, and Eucharistic minister, and in the past was a member of the St. Kieran School Board. Sr. Ida has also taught nursing at Prairie State College for many years as well. Earlier this past summer Sr. Ida had a Jubilee celebration in Clinton with the community and her family and friends, and now we also want to join that celebration. Ida will be reflecting at the liturgy and will renew her vows as well. The Catholic Women’s club will be providing refreshments in the gathering space after the liturgy. Congratulations Sr. Ida. Don’t forget to mark Saturday, February 6th on your calendar for the St. Kieran Women’s Club Mardi Gras celebration. It will be a family event that will include food, cash bar, and entertainment. The cost will be $6 for adults twelve and older and $3 for children 12 years old or younger. The ticket includes chicken, salad, and light drink. All who come are asked to bring a pot luck dish to share. There will also be a cash bar and raffles as well. A DJ will provide the music for the evening. The Mardi Gras will begin at 6:00 PM. Lets do it up well before we begin our Lenten exercises.
Notes from Fr. John

Dear Friends, It’s good to be back at work. I enjoyed the holidays and the extra time spent with family and friends, but there is much work to be done. This month will be spent reviewing the work turned in by the 8th grade Confirmation candidates, preparing the 7th grade candidates for their Enrollment ceremony, and planning and participating in the Vicariate VI Spirit Day Retreat. The First Eucharist class will have a meeting this month, and the 4th graders will lead us in prayer at a Candlemas Liturgy. Please keep all of our children and volunteers in your prayers, especially those preparing for sacraments.
God bless you,
Teri Klopp

Dear Friend of St. Kieran’s Church, The St. Kieran Women’s Club organization has been an important part of the Chicago Heights community for the past 53 years. The women’s club was originally established to serve the members of St. Kieran Parish as well as surrounding communities. Our work provides financial and personal support to St. Kieran Parish, the St. Kieran religious education department, the St. Kieran Cares program and the works founded by Catholic Charities. In the community we have supported; P.A.D.S, the American Cancer society, and local food banks. Every year we struggle to decide what support we can fund because of our financial limitations. Yearly we receive over fifty requests for financial support and turn down 2/3’s of those requests. It is our goal to be able to fulfill an additional…..requests this year. Your support matters With your generosity and support, the St. Kieran Women’s club can continue to provide additional financial support for programs within our parish and throughout the community. This year, funds raised at the our Mardi Gras will be used to continue to support programs such as the ones mentioned above, as well as the many additional programs asking for our assistance. Enclosed you will find a sponsorship/silent auction donation form that outlines the details. 2016 Mardi Gras This year we will be holding a Mardi Gras event on February 6, 2016. This event will be open to the members of St. Kieran Parish and the surrounding communities, and is our organizations main fundraiser for the year. We are seeking sponsors for this event as well as items to be used in our raffle baskets. We hope you will consider supporting the Women’s Club this year and help us make a difference in the lives of many. On behalf of the St. Kieran Women’s Club and parish we would like to thank you for your support. Please know that your donation, at any level, is greatly appreciated and will be used to support programs in St. Kieran church and throughout the community. Please reply no later than January 5 2016 for appropriate acknowledgment of your support. If you have any questions, please contact a member of our Executive Board.
