John St. Kieran Catholic Church Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord April 12, 2020 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. — Colossians 3:4 “E arly in the morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to he tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away.” This is the first line of our Easter Gospel from St. John. The story goes on to say that the tomb was empty and That they had taken Jesus. When Peter and John heard the news, they ran to the tomb to see about what had been told to them by Mary Magdalene. The story at this point is still wrapped in darkness. It is only when John looks into the tomb that the dark- ness is dispelled because John saw and believed. Today we gather with Jesus’ disciples, the saints in heaven, and the generations of followers to once again proclaim that Christ is Risen from the dead. For forty days we have placed ourselves before the Cross, the source of our salvation. We have journeyed together in hopes that our Lenten practices would make us new. And not only us, but also the world. Works of kindness, compassion and generosity have reminded us that we are in this together. We are one family, on a journey to Christ. But Easter is really a celebration that goes beyond the cross. Easter has transformed darkness into light. In a way Jesus tells us to get up, leave our crosses behind and live in his light. All of our symbols remind us of this new life. Water and fire fill us with new hope. Spring flowers, bun- nies, and colored eggs welcome us on this Easter morn. Delicious food, drink and family gatherings remind us that this day is special. Today Christians celebrate with abandon the new life that Jesus has brought us. Like John we have seen and believe. This year our Easter celebrations are muted or have been put on hold. The only gatherings with friends and family are in our memories. We look back and remember with joy the times we have gathered to celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection. This year instead of frilly dresses, bonnets and suits, the new norm may be pajamas or sweats. Depending if we feel safe shopping, dinner may be burger and hot dogs on the grill instead of a ham and all the trimmings. Instead of stories around a dinner table we will share by text, e-mails, and phone our joy that another Easter has come. We are like the apostle John. Just as John looked beyond the crucifixion, we need to look through these times, beyond the virus and see the light. Our stories, the memories of how we dealt these times will be our light. Just like the Easter story these will be stories we share for generations. For those of you who are sick, or lonely during these times, know Fr. Tom, Fr. O’Mara and I are with you in prayer. For those who have been asked to put yourself on the line to keep us safe, this includes our health professionals, first respon- ders, and those called to continue to work during these times, we say thank you. May all of our fami- lies and friends be open to the new life offered through Jesus’ Resurrection. Until we are able to celebrate together again, Happy Easter! Fr. St. Kieran Catholic Church Easter Sunday

of the Resurrection of the Lord April 12, 2020

When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.

— Colossians 3:4

“E arly in the morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to he tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away.” This is the

first line of our Easter Gospel from St. John. The story goes on to say that the tomb was empty and That they had taken Jesus. Cardinal Cupich has canceled, suspended, or postponed all church events through the end of May. This means that Religious Education classes have been canceled, and First Communion and Confirmation have been postponed. Parents should review the last three chapters of student textbooks with their children, as it is unlikely that we will make up our last three scheduled classes for the academic year. The Religious Education Office will reach out to affected families as soon as events are rescheduled. Please take this opportunity to strengthen your family’s prayer life. There are many resources online for at-home prayer and worship. If you need help locating these resources, e-mail the R.E. Office at: [email protected]. Please stay healthy and safe.

Masses will be celebrated privately by the priests of the parish; Intentions will be observed.

The Church will be open for private prayer,

Holy Week at home

As a resource for individuals and families to celebrate Holy Week at home, we are providing prayers through our website. While not intending to replace Holy Week liturgies, these prayers, allow for ritual experiences when public celebra-tion of liturgy is not possible. Notes from Fr. Tom

O Splendor of the Father’s light That makes our daylight lucid, bright; O Light of light and sun of day, Now shine on us your brightest ray. True Sun, break out on earth and shine In radiance with your light divine;

By dazzling of the Spirit’s might, Oh, give our jaded senses light. The Father sends his son, our Lord, To be his bright and shining Word; Come, Lord, ride out your gleaming course And be our dawn, our light’s true source. St. Ambrose (St. Ambrose was the Bishop of Milan in Italy and was not afraid to speak boldly for justice even to Em-perors and warriors. He was famous as a preacher and a writer of hymns; he baptized St. Augustine. The most important people in his life were the people of his diocese, and they admired and trusted him. St Ambrose died on Good Friday, April 4, 397). May Almighty God bless you as you celebrate the joy of the Resurrection and may you come at last with the angels and Saints to the feast that lasts forever. Father Tom K.
