T oday we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We conti- nue the “Bread of Life” discourse and are reminded that our Lord is with us in the Eucharist. In Proverbs we are invited to not pass up this meal Jesus has given us. We are to be open to the wisdom God has given us. Paul continues the theme in his letter to the Ephesians as he cautions all of us to live as the Body of Christ, and not fall into activities that are contrary to it. Each of us is a member of Christ’s body and as such we are asked to build up that body. We constantly seek the Lord’s help as we work to bring about his kingdom. Today as I write this article it is with a heavy heart. Almost thirty years ago I began my priesthood during the priest sexual abuse crisis in the Archdio- cese. In a matter of years Chicago developed a plan that eventually would become the basis for the “Dallas Charter” that was supposed to deal with abuse issue on a national level. In Chicago, in the years since the initial response, trials, and settlements occurred, the Archdiocese seemed to be doing a decent job in most cases. There have been a few exceptions, but we have worked to heal the pain priests and bishops in Chicago caused. And then this week the grand jury cases in Pennsylvania became public and I realized how far we still have to go. It is a time of reckoning for priests, bishops and all who are entrusted with the care of others. I pray for those victims of priest sexual abuse who have been hurt and have no recourse or sense of closure. I also pray to the Holy Spirit for all those who call themselves Catholic Christians. May light expose our faults and heal our hurts. This week St. Agnes Catholic School will begin its 111th year. As we say in a prayer used for wedding anniversaries, “the road has not always been easy, but because we have been faithful to God, God has been faithful to us”. T hats how I look at it. The school is an endevour of love that has been an ongoing min- istry of the parish. It isn’t always easy for the parish or our parents as we work to pass on our faith along with the academics. But we do our best, and God has blessed our work. Whenever I hear of our student’s success in the world, I am strengthened to continue this worthy endevour. Please pray for Mr. Lungaro our principal and all our faculty and staff as they begin the year. And in a special way pray for the children en- trusted to their care. Last call for enrolling in religious education classes. If you have not enrolled yet, you are late and there is a good chance their will not be room for your children. If you are still looking to enroll, call Mrs. Klopp at 708-754-0713 and see if room is still availa- ble. Classes begin in early September. Next Sunday we will have our Summer Mission Appeal at St. Kieran. Fr. James Nathan from SriLanka will be with us. Please be as generous as you can for the mission appeal. Finally, please join St. Agnes for the Joe Dee Golf Classic to be held on September 9th. Also put the St. Kieran parish picnic in your calendar for Septem- ber 16th. Volunteers are always welcome. Please contact Sheila in the parish office or email her to stk- [email protected] if you can help. Our Patron Saint: St. Kieran of Clonmacnoise

Biography

St. Kieran (Ciaran) of Clonmacnoise, also known as St. Kieran the Younger, was born around 512 AD in Connact, Ireland. The town was located in the northern part of County Roscommon. The son of Beoit, a carpenter and chariot builder, Kieran inherited a love of learning from his mother’s side of the family, as his maternal grandfather had been a bar, poet, and historian. Baptized by Deacon Justus (“the Righteous One,”) who also served as his first tutor, the boy Kieran worked as a cattle herder. Even this early in his life, stories testifying to Kieran’s holiness are told. Some later believed that his work as a herdsman foreshadowed the care he would offer the many who sought his wisdom. Kieran continued his education at the monastery of Clonard, which was led by St. Finnian. Yet another story, that of the “Dun-Cow of Kieran,” is associated with his move to this abbey. What is quite certain is that Kieran quickly gained the reputation of being the most learned monk at Clonard and was asked to serve as tutor to the daughter of the King of Cuala, even as he continued his own studies. His friend and fellow student, Columcille of Iona, testified to Kieran’s

brilliance by saying, “He was a lamp, blazing with the light of wisdom.” Besides being renowned for his brilliance, Kieran also had a great capacity for friendship with other leaders of the early Irish church. In addition to Justus, Columcille, and Finnian, Kieran counted Enda of the Aran Islands as his mentor, and both Senan of Scattery Island and Kevin of Glendalough as friends and colleagues. Kieran’s years of residence at Clonard were also marked by miraculous events that benefitted the entire monastery.

Join us next week for the second installment of the St. Kieran Story

Parish News & Events

Father Edmund Aristil, pastor of St. Emeric in Country Club Hills, is reaching out to our communities to help St. Cecile, a parish in Haiti where his cousin Fr. Etienne is pastor. Fr. Etienne has been requested by his bishop to erect, furnish, and equip the new parish school from scratch. Parishioners from our neighboring parish of St. John in Glenwood will travel to Haiti in September to assist them and bring supplies.

They are requesting the following items: • Lightweight collapsible backpacks (no wheels) • #2 pencils • Small pencil sharpeners • Small erasers • Pocket folders

Haiti was devastated by an earthquake in 2010, and was still not rebuilt when it was struck by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which destroyed most of southern Haiti. The people of Haiti continue to need assistance of all types. If you can donate to help the school being built, please bring your donations to the church and I will get them to St. John Parish.

For more information please contact Barbara Dutko at 708-957-3742.

Thank you for your support!

Next Sunday we will have our Summer Mission Appeal. Our visiting priest is Father James Nathan from the Diocese of Jaffa in Sri Lanka. Please be as generous as you can for the mission appeal.

St. Agnes has hosted a Shawl Ministry group for a number of years. They are a small group of knitters and crocheters who make baby afghans for fami-lies who are baptizing, shawls for the sick or home-bound and neck scarves for PADS guests. A lot of the work may be done at home, but they meet once a month for about an hour at St. Agnes, usually on the last Thursday of the month at 10 AM for a cup of coffee, company, and to pray while they work. If you’re interested in joining the group, please call Ann at 756-2635 or Kay in the parish office at St. Agnes at 709-2694. P.S. Plenty of supplies are available, so please think about coming to learn how to knit or just for the fellowship!
